In many retirement communities, the assisted living residents are separated, and as such feel like second class citizens. At McDowell Village, independent and assisted living are involved in the same activities and eat in the same dining room. And what a dining room--thank you to the wonderful Rosa Guzman who knows every resident's name and has something lovely to say every meal! Many of the assisted living caregivers are kind, understanding and caring. Thank you to Veronica, Ashlee, Vicki, Mina, Bibi, Araceli, Joshua and Jesse. I would mention that even though we filled his pill case every week, my father was unable to take his medicines himself. For this reason, we signed up for Med help. However, it is labor intensive for the family/physician. We would like to thank the staff at McDowell Village for all the help we received during my father's stay.

Go to literally any other retirement community if you care about your mom, dad, grandparents, whoever. Do not put them here.

My grandmother lived at The Gardens for 7 months and at first everything was great. However as time…read morewent on it was clear things were not ideal. Her room often smelled of urine, and while the care staff was great, her living situation quickly deteriorated. One evening I received a call where she was "lost" but they later found her in a courtyard talking to a friend. The financial accounting aspect was very frustrating. I was originally told she could eat in her room or in the dining room but then they began to charge a delivery fee. She fell a second time right before her 88th birthday and sustained a TBI. We were still expected to pay the rent portion for her 30 day notice, which I understand but I am now arguing about a $47 charge that cannot be explained. This is the last thing we should be worried about when my grandmother is now dying as a result of that last fall.

I can't say enough about the kindness and the loving atmosphere provided by the long-term care nurses. They were more caring to my mom than I could've expected. Mom received the most supportive help with patience and gentleness right to the end. I never imagined or hoped for a better environment for her as she declined. I just looked over the pictures of damage to the facility. I did see some of that, but only in rooms that were being renovated.
