I have resided at McDowell Village since spring of 2024. I recently had a maintenance issue. The staff is exceptional and do everything they can to help in fact they're one of the great positives here. I have a special diet and the staff does whatever they can to try to accommodate that and I do appreciate that. I entertain for the resident birthday parties every month at McDowell Village. Erica & Melissa are so great with the people and make them feel so special. They make me, as a visitor feel special too as on my birthday they gave me a huge basket of goodies and a huge birthday card signed by everyone!! I am geriatric nurse- RN- and I chose McDowell Village for my mom in independent living. My mom came to Arizona from Florida to be with family after my dad passed. This was during the height of Covid. My husband a physician and I looked at 5 places. Not one place compared to McDowell Village. The food is wonderful- high end- lots of menu choices- delivery and pick up to eat in your room as needed. My mom LOVED everyone and everything about McDowell. She had her hair and nails done every week. My mom looked forward every day to the activities- The staff Erica, Melissa and Starr are the kindest women you will ever meet. My mom saw each them as her own. My mom loved playing Bingo, canasta and was on the Trivia Team. She participated in the cook offs and even came in 2nd place. Every staff member knew my mom and made her feel very special every day. Management made my mom feel very special. They respected her thoughts and feelings. I could come and go 24/7 and when I left I was NEVER worried about my mom. If she needed anything at all the staff made it work. My mom loved the celebrations and parties. McDowell doesn't miss a beat. The facility is clean, open and welcoming to all. I loved that the social committee and dining staff sat my mom with as many people as possible so she met new people. She loved going on outings for meals and theater with the staff and her friends. Honestly, my only regret is she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and we didn't have more time together and with her friends at McDowell. My husband even made matzah ball soup and a Chanukah Party for her friends at McDowell. She made lots of amazing friends. Even after she passed her best friend from McDowell will be her tomorrow for Thanksgiving. Every member of the staff was at her side after she was diagnosed and made sure she was treated with kindness and professionalism until she passed and had a Celebration of Life for her which made me see even more how happy she was at McDowell. I recommend without hesitation McDowell Village. I have been the Director of Nursing for an all level facility and I ONLY refer to McDowell. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You are the best. I will forever be connected to McDowell and especially the girls of the Social/Activities Dept. read more

Beware of the assisted living caregivers and nursing staff.I was evaluated and accepted for placement of McDowell Village during the second week of August.during this assessment meeting I told the nurse that I would have great difficulty using the step in shower. The nurse approved me for placement after I told her this. In reliance on this placement I sold my condo. A new nurse was hired the following month.shortly after she was hired she instructed the caregivers not to let me stand using the grab bar. Of course I became weaker after not being permitted to stand. A few of the caregivers who liked me told me that some of the other caregivers were pressuring management to get rid of me because I was a 2 person assist. Their nurse came to me in late October today that she would arrange for me to go to a first rate rehabilitation facility . I was given very short notice on November 1 that I was going to a rehab facility that night.. I was sent there at night in an ambulance even though there was absolutely no medical need to send me by ambulance. The rehabilitation facility I was sent to was definitely 3rd rate . It had a vacancy rate of around 50% and a very poorly equipped rehabilitation room. On November 23 , just 2 days before Thanksgiving, I received a short call by the nurse that McDowell Village would not allow me to return to my apartment there because I was unable to transfer in and out of the shower. To make matters worse my insane for rehabilitation services ended up November 27. I therefore had to pay the rehabilitation facility nearly $5000 to stay there while looking for a new place while also continuing to pay McDowell Village rent to keep my possessions safe.I found a new facility and moved there on December 23. From November 28 to December 23 I received no rehab services. Therefore I left the rehab physically weaker than when I entered. I believe that the caregivers who wanted me gone successfully pressured management to get rid of me. Since McDowell Village did not include me in the discussions that so seriously affected the crucial issue of my living arrangements, I will never know for sure.McDowell Village management says it puts great importance on the welfare of its residents but denying me the right to be involved in such an important decision demonstrates their lack of respect and lack of fundamental fairness in dealing with their residents. I think that McDowell Village acted in bad faith when it accepted me for placement and charged me thousands of dollars in initial fees only to get rid of me less than 4 months later for not being able to do something that I told them from the beginning I could not do. read more

I can't thank the team at McDowell Village for taking such excellent care of my mother. She has been a resident for almost 5 years. From Day 1 she was welcomed with open arms. It takes a very special person to work in a senior living community, and the amazing management team has done an excellent job hiring some of the best. During the Covid pandemic these folks have become my mom's second family. I know that she is in the safest place possible because they are following the strictest protocols and they are absolutely transparent and communicate with families almost daily. This team goes above and beyond for their residents from the Dining room/Kitchen employees, front desk to the clever and creative Activities directors. I can't imagine my mom anywhere else and I can sleep well at night knowing she is in the loving care of this great facility. read more

I am not a resident here...(still have a few years to go) but this place is awesome! I was lucky enough to visit and have lunch with some of the residents. The facility is absolutely beautiful and the staff are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. All of the residents I met told me how much they loved living there and everyone seemed so happy! They allow redident to have pets (under 30 lbs) wich I thought was really cool. They even have Happy Hour in the on-site bar! The food was great and the activities they offer residents are amazing. The day I was there they were setting up for Oktoberfest and beer tasting. Nice! If you have a loved one that needs a friendly, safe and fun place to live I would recommend you check this place out! read more

My ONLY issue was finding out that they collect a $2500.00 "community fee" that is NOT refundable. I totally understand taking a deposit and refunding that deposit upon moving out minus cleaning fees or damage BUT to keep $2500.00 and slapping a name on it like community fee to make it legit is WRONG, a complete RIP OFF, SHADY and pretty CRAPPY!!! It's flat out scamming on the elderly, a very sad way to make money and even worse, when I spoke to Jay who manages the place, he couldn't give me a straight answer as to what the $2500.00 covered except to tell me that it "was in the lease which was signed". Yes, he was absolutely correct, it was in the lease which was signed but that doesn't diminish the fact that it's really really cheesy... It's a sad blemish for Mcdowell Village because my father lived here for a few years before his death. I can honestly say that it was great for him and probably gave him more time to live. He made some great friends and participated in some of the activities so if it wasn't for them RIPPING MY DAD OFF, I'd have more good things to say besides SHAME ON THEM!!! read more

My husband and I just returned from dinner at McDowell Village with my mother this evening, having had a lovely experience of good food, excellent service, and engaging residents who stopped by our table to say hello. We've seen McDowell Village up close and personal for the last 8 months, attending special events and dropping in regularly. My mother has enjoyed concerts, outings to restaurants that we would love to experience, fun card playing, participation in an art show, warm interaction with staff, new friends among residents, and a happy environment that feels like a mini-resort. The staff has a great esprit de corps with fun, warm and caring attitudes; the residents have universally spoken about how happy they are there. I would not hesitate to recommend McDowell Village. read more

My father was at McDowell Village in assisted living for over a year. He received good care and as all have mentioned, this retirement community is clean, beautiful and organized. In many retirement communities, the assisted living residents are separated, and as such feel like second class citizens. At McDowell Village, independent and assisted living are involved in the same activities and eat in the same dining room. And what a dining room--thank you to the wonderful Rosa Guzman who knows every resident's name and has something lovely to say every meal! Many of the assisted living caregivers are kind, understanding and caring. Thank you to Veronica, Ashlee, Vicki, Mina, Bibi, Araceli, Joshua and Jesse. I would mention that even though we filled his pill case every week, my father was unable to take his medicines himself. For this reason, we signed up for Med help. However, it is labor intensive for the family/physician. We would like to thank the staff at McDowell Village for all the help we received during my father's stay. read more

My mom lived some of the best of her later years at McDowell Village. She was at home here and enjoyed her friends, various activities and outings. Her favorite was the Elvis impersonator who would sing to her and kiss her cheek. I visited and helped her and got to know lots of kind people. It was heartbreaking when she had to move out. This is by far the BEST run senior living center I have seen, EVER. My neighbors moved here over a year ago. They spoke so highly of the place, that when I was looking for a senior residence for my mother, I chose McDowell Village. My mother has been here 3 months and I visit frequently. McDowell Village is such an exceptional senior residence. All the staff are so professional, friendly, courteous, compassionate and respectful of seniors. They go out of their way to make the experience here enriching and uplifting for each senior. The individual needs and preferences of every resident are respected and valued, be it assisted or independent living. In every other senior residence I have looked into, there is a discrepancy in how the assisted living residents are treated, but not here. Assisted and independent living residents share in the same fabulous activities and events and dine in the same fabulous dining room together. Walking through the hallways of McDowell Village, you would not be able to tell which apartments are assisted and independent living. The hallways are well maintained, clean, aesthetically pleasing with interesting, beautiful artwork and an attention to detail that reflects they care. In fact every nook and cranny of McDowell Village is this way, not just the entrance or more visible areas. The dining experience is in a grand high ceiling dining room with lots of windows letting in the light and views of palm trees and greenery outside. The decor features plants, vivid colors and patterns, all orchestrated well together. The resident orders from a menu that offers a variety of meals and options. The food is good, with a nice presentation. McDowell Village has so much to offer! I have not seen such an extensive variety of stimulating and fun activities at any other senior residence. There are talented musicians and concerts in the Village room weekly. There are numerous fun theme parties and events that are done so creatively and well! My mother says when they throw a party " they really go all out." For New Years eve, they recreated the Vegas experience and had a rendition of the Vegas strip in the Village room with a huge Eiffel tower. There were "gambling" tables, slot machines, lots of games and festivities.."like one big party." For dinner they had lobster tail and champagne. Dessert consisted of an eloquent edible chocolate cup with a delicious mousse confection inside. Besides the parties and fun events, there are lectures, book clubs, religious activities, artistic classes & activities, balance, workout & strength training classes, pool aerobics, one on one instruction with a fitness trainer, an on site group/office for physical & occupational therapy, numerous outings to museums, concerts, educational & cultural events. The in house movie theater offers a a variety of high quality movies of every genre, with a different movie every day. Right across from the movie theater is a bar with a happy hour every day. There is a pool & jacuzzi courtyard, a pretty courtyard with fruit trees, and walking paths. The individual apartments are set up so well with a layout that is highly functional and easy for a senior to navigate. They feel spacious and airy. Many apartments have been updated. There is a small patio or balcony from the living room, a window and roomy walk-in closet in the bedroom, a full kitchen with a dishwasher, stove/oven, microwave, standard size refrigerator, and washer/dryer. There is plenty of well planned storage, also At McDowell Village, you get the feeling that every detail has been done with much thought, organization and care. There is a high standard of quality and professionalism here. If there is something you would like or have a suggestion of how things may be improved, they are eager to accommodate. read more

Although I love McDowell Village for Independent Living, if your love one has been diagnosed with ANY kind of a memory condition like; mild to moderate cognitive impairment, DO NOT choose McDowell Village as the right place for them. Find a community that has levels of assisted living and memory care. The sales people at McDowell did not level with us when we told them my mother had a memory/dementia diagnosis. These conditions get worse and McDowell Village is not equipped to provide the best care for this. Check out Sunrise Senior Living on Scottsdale and Shea. It is a beautiful, small community that has high quality care. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about McDowell Village, including Debbie, Kristen, and Jay. My parents, after searching the area for the right senior residence, decided on McDowell Village and they couldn't be happier. There are activities all day long and special events for many of the holidays. The restaurant's ambience is really nice and the food is delicious. There are summer concerts, happy hour, outings, and shuttles to doctor appointments, local grocery stores, banks, etc. weekly. The staff is outwardly caring and attentive to the resident's needs. I live out-of-state and several months ago my mother had a health incident early one morning while I was talking with her on the phone. I called McDowell Village immediately and they sent an ambulance AND a staff member went up to their apartment and stayed with them until help arrived. The staff's quick response time and ability to handle a potentially life-threatening situation allowed me time to get on a plane and get to my parents without nearly as much stress as I would have felt otherwise. I could go on and on but suffice to say if you are looking for a senior residence, I highly recommend McDowell Village without hesitation. read more

My mom was a resident here, but wanted to be closer to her friends, so she moved to a retirement community in Mesa. McDowell Village was our first experience with any kind of retirement community, so I was ignorant as to what is good, great, bad, etc. Now that Mom has moved, I know better. McDowell Village is GREAT!!!! They took such good care of my mom... much better than she's getting now. Plus, the caretakers speak clear and concise English. If you're shopping for a community for your loved one. make sure caretakers have English either as their first language, or they speak English well enough to be understood by your hard-of-hearing family member.... or even yourself! McDV is also great at getting your loved one out & about, socializing with other residents, which turns out to be KEY. They are responsive to medical needs, and have one of my favorite geriatric docs who comes to the facility (Dr. Randall Clark). I'm still bummed Mom doesn't live there anymore because my life as a caretaker was SO MUCH EASIER when she lived at McDV. Everyone there was good to my mom AND great to & for me. If you can afford it, put your loved one here. Heck, in another 20 years I'm hoping I can move in!! A little pricey, but trust me: IT'S WORTH IT!!! read more
