Best Mexican bread ever ! Was my first time today and had to go back for seconds. Every bread I got was so good.

If there is a heaven and I am allowed in (LONG shot), I hope it smells half as good as it does at the International Bakery. When I walk in, I feel like Bugs Bunny in the old cartoons where he just floats to the wonderful smelling carrot. Except in this case, it's wonderful pan dulce. This place is truly as good as it gets. The variety of baked goods is fantastic and as everyone has said, the prices are great too. Just walk in, grab a tray and some tongs, and get to work picking out your treasures. I have, for some insane reason, given up most sweets, so I have not actually had anything from here in about six months. But, we've stopped in the last few weeks to pick stuff up for the rest of the family. Some favorites include cake slices, chocolate cupcakes (think hostess but homemade in shop), a french bread slice with a white frosting and sugar, and the donuts. I am certain all of these have great names in Spanish but I cannot begin to tell you any of them. I wish I could. Just trust me that if you end up here and leave with anything, you'll likely love it. The only regret I have is not having purchased more!! The delicious smell lead me in, I paused for a moment at the sign that said 'cash only', then I wandered in to see if it was worth me having to find an ATM. Bins & bins of brightly colored, yummy smelling delights greeted me. I didn't even know what most of them where, but I felt a great need to find out, lol. There's an ATM across the street, so after a quick dash to and from, I picked out a few, or 1/2 dozen, pieces of different kinds of breads. My favorite was something that looked like a cone and had a perfect custard like filling inside...... ahhhhhhhhh!!!! I was just introduced to this wonderful bakery and I loved it so much I bought all my friends baked goods so they could see for themselves what I'm talking about. No worries about breaking the bank with this place, everything was very inexpensive. I'm talking 3 items for $1! I'm not a fan of most things sweet so spending a lot of money on sweets is not something I like to do, much less take the time to write a review about it. But I do like things that are cheap and good quality. Usually it's impossible to have both of these. Not in the case of the International Bakery. The building itself sits on the corner around 24th and Q street (Across from Thrift World). The first time I walked in I thought I might have been in the wrong spot. I felt like I could be walking into a military mess hall, but I quickly got over the lack of any decor as soon as I turned to notice the wall of deliciousness. After all, I'm only there for the product. They offer many different varieties of baked goods It's all self serve, you dish up the items you want onto your own tray and take it to the cashier: kind of like old country buffet but.. well, not not at all... I believe they also have breads you can buy or place orders, this is something I will be going back asap to check out and buy. I was in the area early one morning so I decided to stop in and pick up some baked goods to bring to work. Parking is a little confusing, since there is limited street parking, but I was able to find a spot at the other end of the block. The bakery is set in a huge, open building. The left side is lined with racks of fresh baked goods and the right side has cases full of baked goods available for selection. When you walk in, you grab a red, plastic tray and a set of tongs and then make your selections from the cases. Everything is between 35 cents and $1.50. There are labels, but I still had no idea what anything was, so I just grabbed one of (almost) everything. I got 13 items and made my way to the front counter to pay. I knew the prices were low, but was still shocked when the gentleman behind the counter told me my total was $3.95 (I actually did a double-take). The baked goods are obviously affordable, but they are also pretty good. The texture is drier than what I am used to, but the flavor is really good. I tried 4 of them (pieces of them, not the whole items), and enjoyed all of them. I would highly recommend this place if you are in the area. read more

My interactions with International Bakery is a continual reminder that I need to invest in Spanish lessons because a) I have no idea what I'm buying and, therefore, can never truly write a thorough review with specifics and b) my recent attempt to order a cake by phone was a epic fail due to my inability to communicate. Nonetheless, I embrace my limited language skills, and armed with plastic tray and tongs, will continue to try to spend more than $7 a visit (epic fail on that front as well). Near impossible when everything seems priced at 50 cents or less. Sigh....I could really go for one of those chocolate tipped palmiers right now...oh shoot, that's the French. read more

I finally found my way to International Bakery for the first time a few weeks ago and I've been back, well, let's just say "several," times since. (Making up for lost time). As others have said, it looks pretty rough on the outside, but it's what's inside that counts. Inside, you'll find a wall full of every type of pastry you can possibly image. Oh, and most things are either 30 or 50 cents each, so go crazy. (In fact, if you don't bring cash, you'll have to, because they require a $5 minimum for credit). Just grab a tray, some tongs, and pile it on. My friends and I have gotten into the habit of watching when the cashiers punch each item in (the screen faces the customer), so that we can learn the names of our favorite items. I am not a fan of sweets but everyone in the Taco Tour group including my gf loved this place. I stopped back in a few days after the tour to get some pastries for work and I noticed they also have savory items. Kind of like a high end hot pocket filled with chorizo/cream cheese, ham/cheese or jalapeno/cream cheese. These are fantastic with the chorizo version being the real standout - and the are A DOLLAR! How does this place only have 2 reviews??! The cream cheese jalapeno bolillos are amazing! Cost about a buck a piece. They look just like normal dinner rolls, but inside they are filled with cream cheese and jalepeno goodness! Some have meat in them too! Soooo yummy. This is one of the best bakeries I have been to. Was our looking for something to do and saw this place was busy. they were closing but there was still a large selection of pastries, best part is they each one was under 0.35 and under can't go wrong. Most Spanish speaking places assume I speak Spanish I always speak to them in Spanish. These guys figured out I wasn't and kinda caught me off guard. Nice bakery which we don't see in West O. Lots of pastries, bread, cakes, and donuts, for super cheap price. Breads are little dry to me but I think it is supposed to be like that. Their tres leche cake is great. The store is very nice and clean. Fun to visit if you are around. read more

This has all the goodies and sweets you could ever want. All of the breads, and desserts are fantastic. You come in and grab a tray, and tongs. You grab everything you could ever want and then they ring it up for you. It is cheap here. The price per item is so extremely low that it is such a great place to come. It can be super busy so make sure that you come when it's not super full. read more

I *love* this place!! It's been a while since I've been there but I had occasion to be in the area so I made a pit stop. It's been remodeled since I've been there last and the flow from the entrance, to the product and then to the cash register is a lot better. I grabbed a tray, some tongs and then started loading up my tray with goodies. Because everything looked so good, I got a little carried away and was sure that I must have gotten $10-12 worth of treats but to my surprise it was only $5.45. This place is fairly unimpressive from the outside... but once you step through the front door, it's sensory overload. The smell is intoxicating, just baked goodness wafting through the entire place and consuming every fiber of your sense of smell. Then the selections... easily over 40+ (maybe even upwards of 60) different types of baked goods all for the taking. There were cakes, breads, cookies, donuts, muffins, etc.... all in different colors and covered in different things (coconuts, chocolate, sugar, sprinkles). One yelp review simply can't capture all the different selections. So many delicious looking pastries and cookies that you can't possible experience everything in one visit... needless to say, I will be back. I grabbed a dozen different goodies and it all equated to a bill of $5.50. WHAT A STEAL. Ate a donut in the car and already I'm wanting to come back for more. Omg! What an amazing mexican bakery. Most of the baked goods are under $1. The store is clean with a huge selection. I had to walk around twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. When you walk in there are trays and tongs for you to use for the pasteries. I recommend the cone pastery that is filled with bvarian cream. It wasn't overly sweet nor overly filling. A perfect dessert with coffee or tea. I don't remember the name of another dessert but they're flaky and heart shaped. That's great too. I love the IB. CHEAP, CHEAP cookies, rolls, pastries and other baked goodness. Most all is of the Mexican variety, that is, not quite as sweet as the north of the border counterparts, but equally as tasty (often more tasty). Just walk in, grab a tray, and start hitting up the cases and pick your poison! Sometimes, we walk out of here with 2 full paper sacks of goodies and it still only runs $5-6. The yellow cookies and anything with the pudding style cream are my favorites. I've heard of a legendary dinner roll looking item with cream cheese and jalapeno in the middle, but I've yet to sample. I keep trying to get one but striking out. I'll continue to try. read more

So, when a bakery is called "International Bakery" you would assume that the name means what they serve...an INTERNATIONAL array of baked goods...did I get this? NO, of course not, it's not like I am in the middle of the country where finding such gems is possible....thats just too much to ask for. I got to the bakery and find that its Mexican baked goods...nothing more...yes I am a fan of pan dulce just like any other person, but come on! Is it my fault I grew up around multiple cultures and had easy access to all their baked goods? Yes? Ok, well I know that they live in the midwest where they have their fair share of "Oh so you don't sell pumpernickel?" but canyou guys at LEAST sell empanadas with meet in them?!?! I bought various breads. All were ok except the conchas and the pigs....they were extremely dry. Maybe I picked the day old ones or they stale faster due to humidity? (Pulling stuff out of thin air here) All in all you all fooled me with the name of the place, but you have someone who will come back again and again because I have yet to find another place that does pan dulces like I remember. I love this place. You take a tray and some tongs and you get to pick out any and all the bakery goods you want. Prices are super cheap but the treats are so good. Most everything is bread related. I usually went to get donuts or rolls or patries. These to me were not patries. They were very good but not sweat. I really enjoyed them because nothing is drenched in icing. I would eat super sweet things and get terrible stomach aches however that's just what I was used to getting. These wonderful items are drier, plainer, and great for morning breakfast. I dunked them in coffee and enjoyed every bite. I just really enjoyed the change and now I can't eat the super sweet items from other places! I feel better in the morning. read more

I used to come here regularly, once a week, while running errands in the neighborhood. Most rolls are .50 cents to $1.00 with a rare roll being like $1.50 and you can usually fill a tray for $5. But I went once and there was new young guy at the counter and he wanted to charge me $2.50 for one roll. It was almond and something else. I balked a little bit but was like whatever. His credit card reader wasn't working so we had to go over to another register where a woman who is a regular I see all the time was working. I held up the roll and asked her how much it was and she told me $1.50. I was like yeah, you're overcharging me. He told her no it's $2.50. They're like you want it? I was like sure. But, in my mind i'm like, "sure, BUT I AM NEVER COMING BACK". Anyway, I ate one and it was okay. The other I gave to a homeless woman who was waiting at an intersection in Midtown. Though $5 for 2 pastries at this place is pricey, it wasn't about the money. I just don't like being treated unfairly and I don't like suprises. They need to just put prices on things so this doesn't happen. Only then will I consider going back. read more

I love coming here. Everything I've ever tried here has been good. This place is cheap also. It's not unusual to walk out of here with a bagful of goodies for around five dollars.
