I've driven up north lamar many a time, subject to the weird clubs (media noche whassssupppp!), bad clothing chains (rainbow) and odd ethnic restaurants that I flip flop on. Either they could be the holy grail of curries, the top of the taco stops, the giant among gyros... or colon blow 2014. In this case, we just needed some beer. We stopped at a questionable corner store settled in what might be an old Fiesta. Then we wandered down the way to International Food. And international it was! All kinds of outrageous and presumably delicious items with letters I couldn't hope to read lay before me. It was the proverbial Aladdin's cave of culinary adventure. I could describe to you ad nauseum what we discovered there but it would take far too long. The highlights were cheap bags of spices, cheap produce, masala flavored lays potato chips, a butcher shop area in the back, every yogurt you could want, brined sheeps and goats cheese, syrups, olives, cherries, canned goods, sardine type things (eeeew), ready to make tikka and vindaloo and korma. We left with our arms full of stuff I can only hope we like and big plans to put together an adventurous dinner for friends who have made the terrible mistake of trusting us with their digestive system.

Loved the food here! I got a gyro plate and it was seasoned so well. The rice and pickled vegetables were awesome, and this place definitely upholds the integrity of the popular snack, Hummus and Pita Bread (with some olive oil in the hummus). Big win, the only thing I could do without is the fluorescent lighting. But hey it's a grocery store, not a lounge. The cashier was very polite, there was a misunderstanding about if we had already paid for our drinks and he was quick to correct it and was very professional about the whole thing. We got to chat with a lady that I believed worked there are she was very sweet. Would definitely return for the food.

Does he sell halal meat, please?

Yes, and have a good variety of halal meat, plus they have butcher at all times.

Can someone tell me if the got German food there?

I know they have many imported German chocolates! As far as German food- if you are looking for a wide variety- you might want to check out Aldi's.

THE BLACK AND WHITE: When I say Vietnamese-style, it's only because most of the internal signage is in vietnamese. It has every asian countries ingredients from China/Korea/Vietnam to The Philippines and indonesia. You can find some really good pricing here on those staples. Fresh produce aisle is a bit limiting. Pretty big seafood area and meat. Walking to your far left side are all the kitchen toolware if you want to level up your kitchen game. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Always enjoy my time here at MT supermarket. Lots of ingredients you won't find at a 99 Ranch or H Mart.

My favorite market. Full of fresh fish, veggies, and meats; seemingly unlimited spices, sauces,…read moredried peppers, dried mushrooms, soup bases (fresh and dried); prepared goodies, teas, milk tea mixes; a ridiculous number of fresh and dried noodle options both seasoned and unseasoned; frozen kimbap, dumplings, bao, everything you didn't even know you wanted, you'll find. They even have alcohol, dishes, candles, other houseware supplies, and some basic American products. Prices area generally competitive, some much better than others. My main complaint is that it can be overwhelming, especially when you're trying to find one specific thing. The other issue is that so many items have mislabeled prices or none at all. This can be challenging when you're trying to stay in budget while faced with more options that you can imagine. Also, fresh prepared items don't necessarily have their ingredients listed which can be scary for less adventurous eaters. The store is generally easy to navigate even through some cluttered set ups.

This week's flavor was Red Bean and Matcha, and HOLY WORD-I-SHALL-NOT-SAY... this absolutely blew me out of the water. The red bean and matcha balanced each other so perfectly, and somehow tasted even better swirled together. Both cashiers were super cool too (was that Japanese I heard them speaking?). The guy with the awesome silver hair mentioned he was also from Houston, and we somehow ended up talking about how Austin's Asian scene just can't compare to how insanely diverse Houston's is. Still, it's always nice connecting over a mutual love for a great Asian environment--which Asahi definitely is. Wow--I've been here for 15 minutes, and I already have so much love for this place. My phone is literally dying as I hastily type this, but I felt obligated to spread the gospel immediately.

And I didn't know what to expect my first visit. I thought I was going into a mini Japanese version of H Mart or something, but nope. This is very much a Japanese CONVENIENCE STORE with a little extra bonus on the side, so adjust any expectations. SIXTY PERCENT OF THE STORE IS NOODLES. Like WTF...is this a noodle headquarters? It felt unbalanced...like I had walked into the wrong store and wasn't supposed to be there. So many noodles, it scared me. I expected a variety store. Carry on. The layout is also a bit confusing for such a small space. I genuinely wasn't sure what areas were designated for customers and what areas were for employees...at one point wandering way into the back. My bad. They've got a solid selection of imported goods. Slightly pricey, but this is expected since they offer quite a few niche items you can't find everywhere. Still affordable, though. I HAPPILY grabbed some black sesame latte mix to whip up iced lattes at home as well as some black tea flavored soy milk. This is what you come to these stores for! The niche items. Now to the soft serve: Flavor-wise? Good strong black sesame flavor. Texture? Not so great. This was very icy and not creamy at all as I had hoped. The online pics were deceiving. Plus there were clumps in it that should've been blended out. However, it was refreshing and I could MAYBE see myself returning on a hot day for more if I'm close by. They only offer it on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It's good, but no need to run for this. You can walk. Lol. It scratched the itch but I'm not running back for it. All in all, not an everyday stop, but an "I'll see you when I see you" spot. Know what I mean? 3 stars.

But does it have the best selection of Asian specialty ingredients? Also no. Hana World Market is a gift to the neighborhood, despite all that. They have the edge over H-Mart and 99 Ranch for the exact reason that they're not as big. Even on a Saturday afternoon, the vibe is chill. There's space to navigate with a full cart. There's room in the parking lot. I can get what I need and not stress over crowds. Of course, there's the food court and coffee stand, which are attractions in and of themselves. Deli Rating: 3.8/5 [take out]…read more It was around 8 PM and we were just browsing the deli section when we noticed they were making combo bowls and placing them on the $6.99 shelf. We picked one up with pork ribs, roasted pork belly, bok choy, and white rice. It felt like a great deal, and since we hadn't tried the food here before, we figured why not. If you want to choose your meats, you can order directly at the counter. My husband got the 2 BBQ meat combo ($12.99) with roasted pork belly and honey BBQ pork. It came with bok choy and fried rice. The rice was pretty dry, but the meats were all equally good. The roasted pork belly is much better if you air-fry it and dip it in the sauce. The food is definitely on the unhealthy side, so my stomach wasn't too happy afterward, but nothing major. Overall, I still think this is a solid option if you're pressed for time.

We were looking for a particular Deep brand sweet lime pickle. I asked a gentleman to find it for us. He looked for it & said it's out of stock. Two days later, as I just entered the store, he reached up to me and said, "the pickle you were looking for is here! " I was pleasantly taken aback! :)) for someone to even remember what the customer is looking for. That's paying attention to detail. Well done! His name is Mr. Santosh. I hope the store owners appreciate and recognize you!! Unless you are the owner... that's cool too! :)) The vegetables are all arranged well. Very fresh. They were continually checking if there's any rotten produce to be thrown away. The namkeens were all arranged well in a full section. The spices, lentils, organic stuff, grains, utensils etc. Everything is organized so well!! Very well lit aisles. All within reach. I am sure to visit again! :)) Enjoyed shopping here!

Their pav is usually fresh and soft. Best part once I was buying these and last at counter told me these last only 2-3 days which is very helpful and usually I've not seen this info provided by stores upfront. They also have good decoration and idols and usually you can find most of the stuff during festival celebration. Vipul kitchen is good for snacks, especially samosa. They also have small onion samosa. They do provide both green mint and red tamirand chutney with samosa. I've also done catering order for samosa and everyone loved it. It's crunchy and not so spicy. They can give you discount on bulk order and usually order is made on time. One time I placed order for 100 samosa one hour ago and they were able to manage it. I've tried vipul kitchen curry as well but didn't like it that much.
