I took the 4 hour workshop which was mostly metal working. It was an amazing experience. Wendy is an awesome teacher and explained each step of the process thoroughly. She made herself available to the students and did a lot of one-on-one work. Although we all made the same project (a ring), Wendy made sure there were many opportunities to customize it. You determine the band size of your ring, decide to have a patterned or smooth band, whether or not to have a stone set in the ring, and the color and shape of the stone. I left Amalgam with a beautiful handmade and custom ring! The 10am class went until 2pm with many opportunities for snacks and bathroom breaks in between. The way the class works is Wendy explains each step as you go along and floats around the room to help people complete that step. For the complicated steps (i.e. Soldering), Wendy works with students one by one to ensure safety and correctness. When you're waiting for your turn or letting your ring sit in the "pickling solution" as Wendy calls it, you can relax and do whatever. I snacked (bring food or buy it at the cafe right outside), socialized, and studied for an upcoming exam I had; so, bring things to do or not - just a heads up. Remember to wear close toed shoes, and be ready for an easy, relaxing Saturday at Amalgam if you take the 4 hour workshop, which I highly recommend. It's a fabulous activity for mom/dad and daughter/son dates, a girl/guy's day, or plain ol' self care. Location and parking: The studio is situated in a grouping of buildings that kind of look like bungalows. When pulling into the lot, you won't immediately see Amalgam. You will see a small cafe and a storefront with a big letter "D" on it. Amalgam is between those about 100 ft farther back. There's a small parking lot so if you're going to a class, I would highly recommend showing up early to nab a spot.

When I expressed I was having a hard time to the higher ups, they suggested I worked harder. The other students were allowed to bully me incessantly, which was brought to the attention of the staff, they did nothing. There's no help for students with learning differences. While trying to get clarification, I had multiple teachers yell at me and refuse to explain things differently; they felt repeating the same instruction louder was sufficient. This school is hard enough without a brain that sees the world differently. Also, there is no elevator and no accessibility for anyone who is disabled. Those of us who are disabled and have divergent thinking, deserve equal education, too. Especially when it's $5000+ a quarter.

They also have a screen monitor, which is fairly different allowing you to see the painting as it's being done. The location is inside of the North Dekalb Mall across from a furniture store. It's super easy to find. BYOB is a nice touch allowing you to let loose a bit. Plus: they give a birthday gift which is a nice touch. Cons: they play a nice selection of r&b and rap music, but some of it was way too vulgar. I hope they change this is people bring kids. I'd definitely come back again.

We were about 15 minutes late because I didn't realize it was in North Dekalb Mall (near the movie theater, next to the barbershop). When we got there, our teacher Corey wasn't irritated with us for being late. I've been to Dip and Dab but this was different. And not just because of the urban art and Erykah Badu playing in the background. It was more intimate, almost like having a private lesson. We chose our seats & picked our aprons. There was a canvas, paints and brushes already set up. I was skeptical about being able to paint such a complicated piece in two hours. But Corey was patient, answering questions & being as hands on as needed. My piece turned out great and I had a souvenir to take home. People occasionally wander in out of curiosity because its in the mall. Even though walk-ins are welcome I'd check the website. Then you can pick the day you'd like to come based on the painting you like and RSVP. Don't forget the wine!
