Interstate 80 is not on my radar to drive everyday. On occasion, I am on it to head to a particular destination. It has been a nightmare for construction in West Sacramento. I was stuck in traffic a couple of occasions and was not pleased. I know....I know....it's an improvement!!! The payoff will be worth the headache. We used this highway going to Reno area for visiting friends and fun outings. Some spots are a little rough, but quite decent in other areas. Depending on the time of day, traffic can be tricky. Overall, highways are designed to get us from point A to B! Faster than the backroads. read more

Interstate 80 Do I know Interstate Highways, you bet. I've driven with friends, relatives and alone (Interstate 80 included) and up and down the East Coast, up and down to the Midwest and across the upper part of the U. S. After I moved from the San Francisco area I drove one final time down to San Diego then I drove back across the lower United States and down to the East Coast of South Florida. My most memorable experience was traveling across country. Near Chicago I got on Interstate 80 to get to my destination in San Francisco. Other than the lack of money for hotel rooms and sleeping in the back seat of the car, the drive was smooth sailing. It was one of those nonstop, except to grab a snack and pee type trips. My memories are of the states I saw along the way. I remember thinking that's what they meant by waves of grain. I believe driving this Interstate is one of the best ways to see the country. I have been on Interstate 80 for shorter trips. I never had trouble with the signage. It's easy to navigate entrance and exits. The roads were not in disrepair when I was traveling. I'd have to ask my truck driver friends if that's changed. Lately with the recessions highways can be neglected. I planned for long stretches of road between gas stops. I had car trouble a couple trips. Both times I pulled off to the nearest repair shop and was treated kindly by fellow Americans. Luckily I have never been stuck on the side of the Interstate. Would I recommend young ladies do this trip now a days? I'm not sure. It could be my age talking but I wouldn't feel safe alone on this or any interstate highway unless the distance is short. Blue Star Memorial Highway in CA Highway I-80 spans from San Francisco CA to New Jersey in the East Coast making it a popular and well-traveled route but for the sake of this Yelp check-in you can do it in the Natomas area on Truxel. In California it goes through many major cities including Berkeley, Oakland, Vallejo, Vacaville, Sacramento to Reno. Since hubby and I frequently use I-80 for our travels to the Bay Area and Reno, for this review I've only highlighted I-80 in California. * I-80 in the Sierra Nevada - from fall to spring be prepared to use snow chains, and in summer occasionally, you will hear road closures in the news because of wildfires. * I-80 in the West Sacramento area where U.S. 50 meets (West bound) - be prepared to be stuck in traffic if you're in this area after 10:00a (just from experience). While stuck in traffic enjoy your view of IKEA West Sac on your left :) * I-80 in Fairfield/Suisun, enjoy 6 or I think even 8 lanes in this part of the 80. Watch out for cops, though. They like to hide in the Red Top Road exit. * I-80 where the 580 splits always experiences crazy heavy traffic congestion during commute hours and in the weekends too! Three freeways merges in this area at the MacArthur Maze - I-80, I-580, and I-880 - and people don't know how to drive. * I-80 in San Francisco - traffic, traffic, traffic... all the time! After getting past the toll booths you still have to get past metering lights to control the flow of cars heading onto the Bay Bridge even for FasTrak users. In any part of the 80 expect more delays when CalTrans, who manages the state highway system (they are involved with public transportation systems throughout Cali), are working on the roads. But always exercise caution and slow for the cone zone! While this is the gateway we use to enjoy San Francisco and Reno, it is the freeway we love to hate... and that's how we roll. This is how you get between the Bay Area and the Sacramento area and if you are like me, you have to use it and don't have a choice. It's a love hate relationship. Sometimes it is great and other times it is horrific. Often times the horrific experiences are a result of cal trans and bad drivers. Overall, there is not much to say. I-80 is seriously a disaster! They are constantly doing road work but I really dont see the improvements helping, by the time these projects are completed they are already useless due to the # of drivers we have in California. Recently they added more lanes between winters - w. El Camino, a project that literally took years and traffic hasnt improved 1 bit. 5pm on i80 east between w. El Camino and Raley Blvd basically stands still and it takes 30-45 mins to go 5 miles. I really dont see things getting better, not to mention all the pot holes and cracks. read more

It's Better Than It Has Been SITREP The 80 is my "go-to" Freeway these last 25 years. I drive it. I drive it A LOT. It takes me down to my friends, my kindred spirits and my soul mates down in the Bay Area, because even though Sacramento is where I work, the Bay Area is where "I THRIVE." So bottom line: the 80 is the conduit to my happiness. SETUP However, that is not to say that there isn't an high level of frustration in how (and why) the 80 continues to develop the way it does. * What's up with Davis? * What's up with Fairfield? * What's up with Vallejo? * And what da HELL is up with Richmond and Emeryville? Well, I know that on some of these issues it really isn't the freeway's fault as much as it is with driver stupidity. And unfortunately, I've been stuck as the passenger with some of these idiots. * First off, why does it have to take a Ph.D for people to figure out how to merge from Westbound I-80 onto Westbound Bus 80 in West Sacramento? * Next, it's a CAUSEWAY (between West Sac & Davis), it isn't a dam delicate obstacle course. Go the dam speed limit! * And at least Davis has seen some expansion in the past few years. The congestion around here in the mornings when University is in session have been terrible to stay the least. * Okay, Fairfield, I'll give you some slack that when a levee breaks, you get flooded. But still, why the hell can't the City/County/State (whomever the frack) engineers ever correct this problem? * I have to agree with my friend Heather K - what the hell is up with people driving through Vallejo? It's almost as if once they get past the Radar Traps at American Canyon road on Westbound 80 and into Vallejo, they speed up in exhileration, "Yay! I wasn't pulled over!" Then BAM, that's when the next series of CHPs will nail you, thus leading to more inane rubbernecking. * Richmond / Emeryville - you just suck. If there's every a place I lose time on my Bay Area trek, it's most likely here. I will say that the addition of FASTRAK on the Oakland end of the Bay Bridge has been a huge efficiency, though I'm not quite sure if that praise belongs to this 80 review. This is an accident ready to happen. The freeway gets so stopped up you better have a car with a good braking abilities. More and more traffic every year it seems. Need better and more efficient public transportation. Pot holes galore!! I am careful to set my tire pressure for the lowest amount possible without the tire pressure monitoring lights getting triggered in order to minimize the damage to my suspension. The result of such a bad highway means that commute times is impossible. People have in turn purchased homes as close to the San Francisco downtown as possible. People value their commute times over a fancy big house and Modesto and Tracy have become the affordable housing optinons. read more

The 80 is not my friend. It's a Grade A Disastrous Clusterfuck Incarnate from San Francisco to Richmond, with especially intense irritation in Emeryville. It's scary in Vallejo. Crazy people driving Warp 90 in cars held together with duct tape giving you the hairy stinkeye as they blow past you in full-blown Detroit Lean mode. Fairfield is crawling with fuzz. Set your cruise control for the speed limit or risk having to waste 8 hours of your life taking an online traffic school course to get that ticket wiped from your record....not that I'd know anything about that. Vacaville, Dixon, Davis.....sofa king boring. Snore. Getting into Sacramento is a pain in the twitchet if you're doing it on a weekday afternoon. Traffic is bumper-to-bumper and seemingly intent on preventing you from getting to Happy Hour in time for that $2 beer. Avoid the 80 like the plague if you need to travel on a major holiday. Driving from SF to Sac on Thanksgiving Eve a few years ago took me almost 5 hours. It's a means to an end, and sometimes I wish for a leprechaun with a pot full 'o Xanax to be waiting at that end. read more

The old joke goes that the only cultural advantage to living in Southern California is putting the word "the" in front of a highway number. Then there are the exiled Angelenos that practice this nomenclature from their bitter existence within the San Joaquin Valley. Last Friday morning, Gayle and I drove up I-80 from Pleasant Hill to US 50 up to Genoa, NV. We came back on Sunday afternoon from Reno and the Donner Pass. And even in the construction season, it's a great scenic drive through the Mountains, including passing the remains of the old Dingus McGee's in Colfax. This Highway is definitely a box of chocolates, because you never do really know what you're going to get. It was too early or late to get stuck at Davis, but boy what a backup there was on Westbound 80 right at West Sacramento. I didn't take Business 80 as I wanted to avoid the last day of the California State Fair. But in the end it didn't matter, and in times like this, the only thing I could do is relax, enjoy Gayle's company, and sing along to that signature James Taylor Tune about that damn traffic jam (how I hates to be late). read more

How you rate "The 80" depends on what part of it you drive. After all, it's one big ass road. For the most part, the 80 is a dated, poorly-designed mess filled with potholes and traffic bottlenecks. No matter how bad it continues to get, I still can't rate it one star because it is, for myself and millions of others, an essential transportation corridor. Living in Sacramento as long as I have, you learn about ways to avoid the biggest problems. Lesson #1: Avoid the "Business Loop" 80 like the plague. Those unfamiliar with the area will find it confusing and nonsensical that there are two 80's on either side of downtown. Just know that the business loop, which snakes up the east side of the grid past Cal Expo and the Arden Mall, is in the running for worst freeway on the planet. The road curves sharply, loses and gains lanes at random and always has stop and go traffic. The rest of the 80, especially the long stretch between Tahoe and downtown Sac, is quite nice. Plenty of lanes and a steady flow of traffic anytime beyond the height of rush hour. Think of it all as a relic they keep updating to accommodate more cars. Without some drastic changes, it's just going to get worse. read more

Yes, I call it the 80, not I-80. I grew up south and that's how we roll. Anyway, I drove to SF on Saturday afternoon. supposed to be a 90 minute drive. with traffic, 2 hours. I took me 4 freakin hours to get to the city. Stop and go traffic all the way from Davis to fairfiled. Then the backup from the bay bridge starts. It's a parking lot. I pray that I never get stuck in traffic like this with a case of explosive diarrhea. there's no place to go. If it take this long to drive somewhere, our road system has a serious flaw. This needs to be fixed. read more

For me to like the 80 it all depends on where I am. If I am in Emeryville I hate it. If I'm on my way to Tahoe I love it. Usually If I am on the 80 I can almost guarantee that I will be sitting in some sort of traffic sooner than later. For that I give you 2 stars. read more

What I don't understand is why all the traffic on Eastbound 80 going into Davis? More than once I've tried to get on 80 and almost shit myself at all the stand-still traffic on the freeway. I feel really sorry for the UCDavis students that live in Sac and commute to college every morning. Has it occured to the state of California that a major freeway route from Sacramento to San Francisco should have more 2-3 lanes. Especially when it seems mandatory that some idiot crashes his/her car on that same stretch of freeway every single day. I know this seems like a ridiculous thing to rant about, but if you plan on driving through Davis, Vacaville, Vallejo, etc. get a traffic report first. You'll save yourself a lot of time and gas. read more

ugh. so its been awhile since the 80 has received a review. It still bites the big one. I left Sacramento at 10:00 am on a Sat. morning .. parking lot into Davis. 75 miles too me two and a half hours. Clusterfuck on and off the whole way and getting onto the bay bridge horrible. I finally just got a fasttrack transponder, but once the put the lights on the bridge to control traffic you still get caught up in that. Key on Saturdays: leave Sacramento by 830 a.m. Other days, forgettabout it Except Sundays. Love some Sunday before noon on the 80. read more
