This review is for a stay for two nights in mid-July 2018…read more We stayed in a standard double room. The look of the hotel room is quite dated with lots of potential for updating. The hotel room also had an "old" smell. One thing to note was that it was unusually warm during our stay in Scotland. The rooms did not have an AC unit (or one that we could find). We also learned that the AC would not be turned on, but we do not know why. So, it was quite uncomfortable to sleep and hang out in the room. The bar/lounge, dining areas, and the stairwells, however, seemed to have AC. So, we tried not to be in our room unless for sleeping. We did not use the spa. We used the pool located indoors. It was larger than we expected and clean. The indoor hot tub beside the pool was working and soothing but the outside hot tub ("Canadian" hot tub) was not working. We did not need to be outside anyway since the pool and indoor hot tub was not crowded. We had dinner and breakfast for the two days and nights we stayed. Both meals were filling with adequate portions. The formal dining was fine and quiet but it was more relaxing to order and eat in the bar/lounge area with the couches and chairs. Meal service was excellent. As for the bar service, they were very accommodating with requests, even accompanying me and personally bringing bottled water and glasses to my room. I was surprised, though, that the bartenders did not know how to make a cocktail on their list. I appreciated that they informed me and were transparent rather than hide the fact and pretend to know. Once they looked up the recipe, the execution was excellent, and I readily and confidently enjoyed another cocktail. The remainder of the hotel seemed very clean. Wifi is available throughout the hotel. The feel of the hotel is an older ambience but the hotel guests varied from mature groups, families with school-aged children and teens, and young couples. The employees are very helpful and courteous, and seem to have an excellent work ethic. Location is great. Slightly removed from the town, but it is a very nice 5-10 minute walk to town.

We stayed here for the two nights on our tour and where not expecting much but really we where pleasantly surprised with the rooms that we where given as they where really nice, with the best views ever. Facilities The hotel had everything that you could ever want and more, jacuzzi, steam room and a hot tub sadly we didn't use any of them. Quite a few attractions nearby with plenty of shops & cafes. Food The hotel does have food on offer but we chose to dine out. I did see that the food that was served to other guests looked great & soup was served in a cup. But be aware that you may leave hungry with the portion size. Bar Looked rather like a nursing home with all the armchairs, beware also of the tartan overkill, chairs & carpets overall a good place.

Classed as a residential area, you'll also find all sorts of businesses: from the City Chambers, GOMA, bars, cafes and restaurants. Not to mention music venues like The Fruitmarket and City Halls. The buildings are beautiful - you'll find quite a few of them poem to the public during Doors Open Day each September - look out for St Andrews in the Square. One of the focal points is Merchant Square - a converted market with an awesome internal roofed courtyard, which is surrounded by bars, restaurant, and is home to a weekly craft and design fair. The Merchant city festival runs for around 10 days every July, and is well worth a wander round. All in all, one of the friendliest and most vibrant places to be.

At night is when it really comes alive and there's lots going on! You have the obvious drawcard of Merchant Square but personally, I don't love the offerings. Other streets of Merchant City have great bars and restaurants, and a few favourites for me are Guy's Restaurant, Wilson Street Pantry for brunch, Spitfire Espresso for a great cake/meeting/working spot and Blackfriars for a pint. New additions like BrewDog and Hutchesons are just wonderful, and really add something special to this great part of Glasgow. Parking can be a pain so I recommend parking at King St car park which is a great excuse to pop into the 13th Note/Mono for a pre-post soft drink. There's also a fabulous walking tour/art trail you can do if you pick up a leaflet at GOMA which shows off some of the amazing art in this area.
