Today was my first time getting a cortisone shot at this facility. When I was on the table they pulled my pants down and left me there with no cover while they finished getting ready. It was degrading and humiliating. The Dr just asks if you have questions before he starts. The shot itself was quick and easy, then the Dr walks out. It's like cattle being hearded through. I'm unimpressed. My previous Dr was much more personal and discreet. I would still be seeing him, but he left to work at the VA. read more

Avoid Dr. Klein he is arrogant. Doesn't listen and consistently talks over you. I felt like I had no voice when I met with him. He didn't listen to me. He didn't let me ask questions. Their team made a mistake on my claim and as a result it was denied leaving me out of pocket with a large expense unexpectedly. I came in with two broken fingers, diagnosed by the Iowa Ortho Urgent Injury clinic in Johnston. Dr Shumway proceeded to tell me that one of my fingers was a previous break. I've never broken a finger prior to this. He didn't let me ask any questions, didn't show me my x rays. And sent me out with a bulky but not very protective stint on one finger. This was a work comp injury, so I can using Dr Shumway is more concerned with money than actual patient care. read more

I thought I was going to see the knee Doc that comes to Pella., instead I got his PA. She needs to work on her listening skills. When the patient says there is fluid on my knee (dealing with it for 3 yr.)that needs to be drained 1st before you put the injection in. She said I was wrong. Didn't even do an ultrasound. I wouldn't recommend getting the gel injection, waist of money, because they couldn't follow instructions on the bottle. Another Dr from somewhere else said it's printed right on the label. Timothy Vineyard repaired my torn shoulder rotator cuff and several other things I don't understand. I have not seen him again since before my surgery. He is an excellent surgeon. When you want a late afternoon appointment due to a 2 hour drive, reception is only allowed to book two appointment times past the most recent appointment. In case the surgeons and/ or PAs want to take the afternoon off. I say only work part time if you want the afternoon off. Patients should always come first. read more

I recently had an appointment for Iowa Ortho in Des Moines. I have to say that my experience was overall very negative. My appointment was scheduled for 1:30pm so i arrived at 1:20pm to prefill all the paperwork. I handed the paperwork back to the office assistant at 1:25pm. I was finally called back to the room at 2:00pm where I as asked a few questions by the nurse about my pain. She then stated that we would be doing an x-ray. I was completely unaware I was going to be doing x-rays. No conversation with the doctor as to why the x-rays were needed and the nurse just said it's been longer than a year. So the nurse brings me a pair of shorts and tells me to put them on and she will be back to take me for x-rays. I quickly put the shorts on and then wait 15 minutes for another nurse to open my door and asked if I have had my x-ray. Obviously, they should know if I had been taken to get x-rays. Finally, I get my x-ray and wait another 5 minutes for the doctor to come in. The doctor was obviously in a rush. Our whole conversation lasted maybe 7 minutes in which 5 minutes was him comparing me to a rusty car. Followed by 2 minutes of him offering abysmal treatment options with little evidence to support his reasoning. I waited 24 hours to write a review to make sure that I had a clear head to write an honest review. Extremely dissapointed. read more

I was referred to Iowa Ortho by Dr. Molis, who has provided excellent care over this last year--functional brain injury due to a car accident as well as a hip issue that has lingered. After three MRIs on my hip, I was referred to Iowa Ortho. Not only was it the worst customer service I've ever received--the SCHEDULER told me Dr. Nelson would not be doing surgery on my hip--not sure where she received her surgical degree, but still wanted me to come in for an appointment. Hmm--sounds like Katwoman Z.s issue with the additional copays. I was going to go, since I was curious as to what the surgeon would say. Prior to making an appointment--they would not make it without records. Okay--I was asked to submit a medical release so they could obtain my MRI records--two sets that were at their office and one from my referring doctor. I was rushing out of town so I sent my signature WITHOUT filling in the addresses for the referring doctors since one of the places was where I was going and the other from the referring doctor. After a couple rounds of email with a scheduler, they refused to make the appointment without this section being filled in, so I wrote a review to which I got the pat answer that looks good in print--"please contact our office....blah blah. " So I did contact them. I finished filling out the form when I returned from my trip and sent it to them. No call back. No appointment scheduled I had my NEXT appointment with Dr. Molis and informed him of the situation above, so his office reached out to make the appointment, to no avail as well. Dr. Molis' nurse called me back, not Iowa Ortho, to tell me they would not be working with me even though they have everything they need. So my recommendation is...skip this place and either to DMOS or the U of Iowa. Iowa Ortho offers terrible customer service and you don't need to see their doctors since the schedulers can tell you what they have to offer you. read more

Dr. Klein was rude, dismissive of my pain during a cortisone injection in my lower spine, and insisted that I was only feeling pressur. when my MRI came back showing degeneration in my spine, I wasn't given any other options than an oral pain pill, no diagnosis sheet, no information on what I'd been diagnosed with, and sent home with no explanation on what to expect from this degenerative disease. When I called today to get more informatio, my appointment notes were read to me and they stayed that the doctor had discussed things with me that were never even mentioned. this is the second time that false information has been put in my notes after meeting with a doctor there. They falsify documen ts to make it appear as though they're doing their jobs. Be careful going here. They almost ruined my disability case because of falsified session notes. read more

Kept me waiting almost an hour past my appointment time. I sent over all my reports from a previous doctor including images. After I was kept waiting they said they needed to get X-ray images. I wasn't informed of this when booking an appointment and also had images from my current doctor. It seems they do this as standard just to bill for it. The doctor had zero empathy, warmth, or bed side manner. He barely gave me eye contact. The front desk staff and nurses were the same way, cold and robotic and not friendly. Overall I got the impression that this was an appointment factory and money making business rather than a health focused clinic. I wouldn't feel comfortable continuing treatment here. read more

I had rotator cuff surgery, the work comp aspect made sure the doctor was paid, I ended up with nothing. As of now in my current care, beyond frustrated to say the least! I have been out of work since September 21st. I was happy to get into a clinic quickly, so I took the appt with Iowa Ortho. I wished I had not done that. I had to wait a month to get my MRI, was told I would get a phone call to get an appt to find out my results the next day. I had to call to get my appt. My appt. is one month from the MRI date! Who has ever heard of waiting one month for MRI results. My MRI was October 11, the date for the results is November 8. I have yet to see the doctor, yet I got a text asking me to provide a rating for Dr. Schmitz care. read more

Went to iowa Orho for cronic hip/leg/toe pain and difficult sleeping at night. conntacted by Dr. Rayburn/ PA Austin Duerksen for evaluation. From the minute I arrived at the Ankeny facility, I was greated by an excellent staff and everone from reception, xray, nurses, and finally doctors took time to hear my concerns and the willingness to solve the problem. I was administered a shot and prescription to ease the pain. I had followup appoinntments and through those found to be working on the probems. Austin then suggested I might attend a physical therapy program to build strength and balance, This was an excellent idea and I benifited greatly by the therapy. I have survived 7 major operations of various degrees, broken bones, Covid, and Cancer in my 76 years and have learned you get what you put into life by working at it. Drs, nurses, and supporting staff... Wonderful. Scheduling... sucks. Don't trust them. Scheduled for a scan and a meeting with a PA. Supposedly done in less than 2 hrs. Get there and told I need to do labs too which will take a minimum of 2 hours to get results. PA told me we will go over results at the next appt. I asked what next appt. In the end remember to double check to make a sure your appts are what they say they are and in the time frame they told you. read more

Terrible. I went to Dr. Aviles as my second opinion for a torn bicep tendon which turned out to be a SLAP tear and a rotator cuff repair. Dr. Aviles said there was nothing on my scan and to maybe seek a second opinion. (AFTER being 45 mins past my appt. time) That tells me he did not read my chart and he was wrong. Its disheartening that providers do not review the whole entire chart before seeing patients. Do you think we want to be in pain? I am also reporting him to the board of physicians. Great expertise and patient process. I continue to use this hospital and organization as they do what they need to do to get you back up and running! Recommend all their staff and Dr Ash and Dr Mahoney. Revelry in Jan 2019, Dr Mahone did my hip replacement- he was professional and extremely time efficient in his diagnosis and follow up. He takes his work seriously and it showed in my recovery and results. My hip replacement went extremely smooth and I was 100% upon returning to work. The surgery center was the best I have experienced. Staff and care was amazing. read more

Do not go see Dr Schmitz, he will tell you you'll be fine because his father had worse back pain than you his whole life and still worked as an electrician for 40 years. Then he'll spin some story about how he needs you to go to work (even though you can hardly walk after a shift) because he doesn't want you to "get depressed". So great that an ortho moonlights as a psychologist, don't you think? After that he'll make you wait weeks (and be completely unreachable) before finally telling work comp it's a preexisting condition so you are now several more weeks of no pay and have to start the process of getting medical care completely over. But at least his dad was able to work! What's some near crippling spinal degeneration and stenosis for a 23 year old? Just smile because you're young and be happy you weren't born with "worse" like Dr Schmitzs dad. Who cares if you can't lift over 10lbs or have sex without being bedridden the next couple days? Was with iowa ortho for a few years had ablzions ,trigger points ,and many other things done to help me with my chronic pain. Had lumbar surgery pain got worse. On follow up after ct scan with dye injected they said couldn't see what was causing pain but wanted to do more injections or an spinal implant of some sort. I asked why they were offering that when they couldn't tell me what was causing my pain. After that they emailed me and said Dr.Rayburn or Dr. Austin would no longer treat me and needed to find another pain management . I've been on oxycodone for 12 months. Now they refuse to help me with my chronic pain. . So I would not recommend iowa ortho for pain management.!!! read more

Dr Ash is my surgeon and seems to know what he is talking about. Lol. Check in is easy. Right when you walk in there is a sign board right up front telling you which way to turn. I have been coming here since February due to a shoulder injury and each time I have been there I have checked in and been taken back in minutes. The rooms are clean and the staff is efficient. From the time you walk in the room get your blood pressure taken to when the doctor sees you is minutes. Barely enough time to peruse Yelp!. Every appointment I have been in and out inside of an hour. Other nice features Iowa Ortho has (at on Laurel Ave) has open MRI, out patient surgery, and physical therapy in the same building. And Iowa Orthopedics has other offices around the Des Moines metro for your convenience. I have been happy with my service and care with Dr Ash and Iowa Orthopedics and have no problem recommending them to others. read more

Seen Dr. Smith for a Work Injury. I was sloughed off and not treated and lied to for 4 months before being release. Dr. Smith than told workman's comp that my pain was my spinal stenosis and was not a injury and would not get better. Dr. Smith did not even have the nerve to tell me this himself he let the workman's comp tell rep me. 2 months later my pain went away. So Dr. Smith was completely wrong and he is the perfect Doctor for Workman's comp insurance companies but the worst doctor for the patient. read more
