Patient comfort is rock bottom in this practice. Procedures take forever and the patient is blamed. "You coughed." Gosh, I was upside down with post nasal drip and no breaks to swallow. I was poked with an instrument--"you bled! " A new assistant is the exception, who seems to be both competent and kind. The worst dentist I've ever experienced. Favorite dentist and hygienist team, hands down. Dr. Tan is gentle but thorough on exams, and Mary is the best hygienist I've ever had! She is great to talk to and does an amazing job - we leave with teeth as bright as they've ever been. They were highly recommended by a friend in grad school, and when they moved to a different location I just made a slightly longer drive. Totally worth it for an excellent dental team. I, my husband and three children have been patients of Dr. Tan's for at least 25 years (has it really been that long?). We can absolutely rave about her and her staff's skills and attitude. At one point in this period of time, our dental insurance had changed and Dr. Tan was not within their network of providers. My wife and I have been Dr. Tan's patients for 15 years and it is really sad to say goodbye as we move out of the Bay Area. Her office was originally in Palo Alto and even though the move to Los Altos was less convenient for us, we never considered finding another dentist. The office is professionally run and we've never had a hiccup. Dr. Tan listens to her patients and is gentle and considerate. I had a bicycle accident resulting in a number of cracked teeth and the crown work she did has been excellent. Her recommendations--like when a root canal is necessary--are excellent. But you can't talk about Dr. Tan's office without praising her amazing hygienist, Mary. I can't remember any other hygienist I've had over my lifetime but I'll never forget Mary. She makes it her personal mission to get your teeth clean, to let you know if your brushing and flossing habits need improvement. She asks probing questions so the doctor is aware of what is going on and remembers your issues. She treats you like a valued customer and a person. You know that "Antiques Roadshow" where the appraiser's voice cracks as he examines the Native American blanket and says, "This, sir, is a national treasure"? Dr. Tan is one of the best dentists I've had!! I have major dental anxiety for much of my life, but her and her staff always manage to put me at ease, which is saying a lot! Dr. Tan was also extremely helpful in putting together treatment plans and explaining the various ins and outs of my insurance. In general her and her staff are extremely patient and attentive. I've been going to this office for almost 5 years now and I have only the best of things to say about the entire staff and dental office. Truth be told, my teeth were in pretty bad shape initially, but thanks to sound advice and regular dental cleanings, things have stabilized and I'm getting dental care I trust and follow. Mary, who does all my regular dental cleanings, is a gem and always very nice and gentle for what is not anyone's favorite procedure and the staff has always done an excellent job reminding me of appointments or being flexible when I have things come up. Dr. Tan is absolutely amazing, and her office runs like a well honed machine. She is a perfectionist, and you will be in the chair until she is comfortable that she has it "right". Her work is impeccable, and she has excellent relationships with other dental specialists, which is a huge help when you need it. For example, I had a tooth that was sensitive. She tested several different things and determined that I needed a root canal. (I cringe just typing those words.). With her help, I was able to get an appointment the next day to get my tooth fixed. She is also very good at matching her patients to the referring doctor that will be the best "fit" for their personality. I appreciate this because I am a PIA as a patient. She is very careful to ensure that you are kept comfortable during a procedure, so would be a great fit for someone with a history of bad dental experiences and a resulting phobia. Her hygienist, Mary, has been with the practice for over 20 years and is top notch. I hate going to the dentist, but am always happy to see Mary. For that matter, I am always happy to see everyone in the office, as they are all kind, compassionate, and excel at their jobs, I highly recommend this practice. read more

Irene is very nice, however her work is appalling. I had her put in a crown after Dr Watters retired and was no longer available, and she killed my tooth. Even prior to Dr Watters retirement I let her fill a cavity and it took her three tries before Dr Watters intervened to get it right so the composite wasn't interfering with my bite. She's absolutely awful but a very nice person. I would never recommend her - I would run for the exits - there are plenty of dentists around that are good. She's not! read more

Liked her better and felt more comfortable than at "pediatric dentist" office, which just had TVs, murals etc. but did not interact in as kind and thoughtful a manner with my son as did Dr. Tan. Dr. Tan is the best dentist ever! She is very attentive to your concerns. She does her job well. Unlike most dentists, she will not make up fairy tale stories that require major dental work to steal your money. If she sees a problem, she will thoroughly go into details about the the problem and how further deterioration can be further prevented. She also tries to do her best to prevent as much pain and discomfort while performing procedures. Not only does Dr. Tan provide good dental care, but she is also very personable. She will ask how you are doing, and she'll often tell little stories about herself and her daughters. Her office staff is also very nice. Everyone is on top of everything! =) read more

I've been going to Dr. Tan's office for quite some time now. The staff always makes you feel welcome and are very friendly. They work around your schedule and are very considerate of their patients. I just had a crown done and it fits like a glove. Dr Tan did a wonderful job and was very gentle and walked me through the whole process. When she was working on my crown, I noticed she put extra TLC and attention. I can see she is very passionate with what she does. I'm very happy with my crown and I'm so glad I have a great dentist.
