This is an outstanding dental office from the reception desk staff to hygienists to dental assistants to Dr. Amy herself. Megan and Ashvin are both excellent hygienists, thorough in their medical intake and able to explain things in simple and straightforward terms. My flossing and overall gum health has improved a lot because of their instruction. We saw Dr. Amy from about 2009 until 2020. She was sensible about recommending procedures and never pushed us towards anything expensive that we regretted (though we've agreed to some expensive procedures that we've been thankful for). We felt like she educated us appropriately on how to be proactive at home in ways that previous dentists had not. She was good with our kids. We stopped going when in mid-2020 her assistant walked in unmasked and Dr. Amy said nothing. I was stunned, and after I regained my voice asked her to please put on her mask. The assistant pulled a rumpled mask out of a pocket, put it on, and without washing her hands began to handle the tools that Dr. Amy subsequently put in my son's mouth. Between the failure to mask and failure to wash hands, the inattention to hygiene and regulatory mandates ended our delight with Dr. Amy's dental office. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Amy's for many years and mostly I see her hygienist, Megan. Last time I was in, I explained to Amy that my teeth were hurting when I would bite down. Amy took a look and told me that I had not only a cracked tooth, but also a bad filling. We agreed the teeth should be repaired sooner than later...so, today was the day! I have to say it was one of the best experiences I have had seeing a dentist. Her assistant was very nice and accommodating, which made me feel relaxed! When Dr. Amy came in she did an amazing job at getting my teeth numb, I felt nothing... and trust me, I have had other dentists that were not very good at getting me numb and it was not pleasant. The whole process was awesome and Dr. Amy was a total pro, through and through!! She recommended a porcelain onlay which is stronger and lasts longer than a composite filling. When she finished, she showed me what she had done and I was very pleased. I could hardly tell she had worked on my teeth, it looked that good!! This place is awesome! Thank you Yelpers! I first went to this office 6 months ago and met with Megan, the hygienist, and Dr. Guthrie. This is the first time any body has spent the time to interview me about my dental health and ask what I wanted out of my dental care! They cleaned my teeth super clean with some vibrating water gizmo and then did the standard scrape, polish, and floss. They told me to change my toothpaste to stave off canker sores and other great tips to promote habitual flossing. Lo and behold, 6 months later, the canker sores are gone (woo hoo!) and my teeth and gums are in great shape. When I returned for another cleaning, Megan remembered all my issues from my initial visit and was happy to hear that I was following all her tips with great results. Since my teeth are so white and clean now, I flash my pearly whites all the time! read more

Great dentist/hygienists!! They really care about the health of my teeth/gums as they have recommended changes to my toothbrush/toothpaste that really made a difference. And there's this really cute picture posted on the ceiling that I keep starring at when I'm in the chair. It's a kids drawing of a mouth, with all kinds of gross things like... spinach and corn stuck in the teeth... well I won't spoil it. The only catch is that they are not on any network so make you pay during your visits for the full amount and then work with your insurance to send you a refund check. It's worked out for me since there isn't actually extra work on my part. read more

5 stars although we haven't actually seen Dr. Guthrie but I had to write a positive review of my experience when I called her office to make an appt. I will update appropriately after the appt as well. I've never experienced such a courteous front desk staff who asked appropriate questions and advised about how they deal with insurance...that they aren't a "preferred provider" by Metlife, but would submit the bill to the insurance and bill us accordingly. She also gave me the price for a limited exam which is what the appt was for and x-rays, if we didn't bring our recent ones with us. She encouraged us to bring xrays from our old dentist to save money and was nice enuf to offer to call the old dentist and request that they be transferred. If Dr. Guthrie is anywhere near as good as her front desk staff, we are sold and are bringing our entire family to her! This is huge praise coming from me, who was once a patient of Dr. Michael Hoffman who is unfortunately retired and had set the bar very high. I've been looking for the last 4 years for some half as good, professional and sincerely dedicated to the wellbeing of his patients as Dr. Hoffman. I'm hoping Dr. Guthrie doesn't disappoint. I've been seeing Dr Amy and dental hygienist Ashvin for over 20 years. They have kept my teeth and gums healthy. They both love what they do and take pride in their work. I didn't enjoy going to the dentist before I met them but I do now. Ashvin and Dr Amy have helped me figure out over the years how to keep my teeth clean and healthy between visits. I of course brushed my teeth but they helped me to brush and floss correctly. My previous dentist told me to floss, but Dr Amy and Ashvin actually asked me what my issues were with flossing and helped me overcome them. They keep careful notes and also notice changes in my mouth and make recommendations based on my particular situation. That personal touch and care has made the biggest difference to my oral health. Dr Amy keeps up with technology that improves the patient's experience. I had three old metal mercury fillings that I got as a teen (pre Dr Amy) that eventually cracked and broke. Dr Amy now has a laser so it is pain free to replace them with ceramic fillings. She also has a super high tech x-ray that does a 360 view of your whole mouth in one go so you get a lot more information with a lot less radiation. read more

Dr Amy has been our dentist close to 15 years and I just realized that I have never given her the credit she deserves, since Yelp was not even around when my husband and I started come to her clinic. Not only does Dr Amy do extraordinary good dental work, she has even seen me on a Christmas Day, and she has seen my visiting nervous brother on short notice. I've been seeing Dr. Amy for over 15 years and I wish I'd found her office and her fantastic hygienist Ashvin years before! They've taught me how to take the best care of my teeth and gums, and it is always a pleasure to see them. How many people can say that about their dentist? I also really appreciate that Dr. Amy doesn't push having work done that is not absolutely necessary. As a matter of fact, for cosmetic things, I have to tell her I would like it done. This is the best dental office in the Palo Alto area, and even though I've moved to San Francisco I haven't managed to find a new dentist I like as much up there. I have been seeing Dr. Amy Guthrie for almost 15 years. I really like the dental hygienist named Ashvin who works at this office. He is the best! I don't usually need real dental work done, but if Dr. Guthrie recommends it, I trust it needs to be done. Overal excellent dental care. Dr. Guthrie has been taking care of my teeth since the late 1980's. Careful exam, explains what's going on, what needs to be done now, what can wait, makes a long term plan with you, AND does excellent work. The dental work is as comfortable and painless as dental work gets (even the shot of novocaine feels like barely a pinch). Dr. Amy is a great dentist and I highly recommend her. She has been my dentist for many years and I have always been happy with her and her staff. She is very professional and personable. She has an excellent memory and she knows every tooth in my head, and she has managed to keep them all in great shape. She just replaced a filling for me using her brand-new laser and a high-tech filling compound. The work was fast and painless and the repair is completely invisible. Her hygienists Ashvin and Megan are both excellent. She is very gentle with my child too, and he even looks forward to going to see her. My responses to the message/response sent by the business on 4/24/15: Dr. Guthrie: "I wish that s.f. had included in her report the amount that her family actually paid." My response: We paid the amount that was quoted to us, and agreed to, over the phone, which was about 50% of what Dr. Guthrie attempted to charge us. I simply refused to pay double the amount that we were quoted, when we were consciencous enough to make sure we knew what the cost would be upfront. So yes, I walked out of the office having paid only the amount we had agreed to, but not without having to argue vehemently about it in front of my small children. I believe in showing my kids that sometimes you have to stand up for yourself in order to not be treated badly., or taken advantage of. However, it's not an experience I wish to repeat again, hence the main reason we won't return. Dr. Guthrie: "When I have completed examining a child I discuss my findings with the parent. If they happen to be in the reception area and no one unrelated is present, we sometimes talk there. But if other people are present, we go into a treatment room for privacy (all of our treatment areas have full walls and doors, not open bays as are very popular in dental offices these days). So I am very confused by the "lady standing next to me" comments from s.f." My response: There was a woman sitting in the chair next to me when Dr. Guthrie presented her findings regarding my child's teeth. She was a friendly and funny woman, somewhat older than myself, and she did make these comments (and more) to me after Dr. Guthrie left. I'm fairly certain she wasn't a figment of my imagination. ; ) Additionally: I still have not found a new Dentist. My kids' pediatrician just recently lamented with my about she has had similar experiences with dentists, and "broke up" with said dentists because of this type of experience. Based on this, I feel this must be very common, and I would encourage people to refuse to tolerate it. I completely understand that we all need to earn a living, but the basis of a meaningful life is ethical, kind, and honest behavior. I did NOT experience ethical, kind, and honest treatment from Dr. Guthrie, nor did I receive any kind of apology for her attempting to charge me double the amount quoted on the phone. My children were upset that day because Mama had an argument. It's fine. They saw me stand up for what's right, instead of bending over. And I'd do it again : ) read more

She is easily accessible, even on weekends for emergencies. Amy and her staff are the best I could imagine. We've been going to them for 22 years. They are professional, helpful, friendly, encouraging. Their advice has actually improved my oral health over the years. They've handled my routine care as well as my husband's more complicated dental situations. Once, Dr. Amy even came in on a Sunday morning to take care of an urgent need he had! On my last visit, the hygienist took me promptly on time, asked questions about what I was doing and concerns I might have, explained everything I did, and did the cleaning etc. very competently and kindly. Then Amy came in to evaluate, and discussed how I'd be needing a gum graft in future. She referred me to a periodontist but explained that it wasn't urgent yet; I could put it off until next year, which would give me time to set aside more money in my health savings account to pay for the procedure. I've been going to Dr. Amy (as we some times call her) for almost 20 years now. When I got to her, my teeth were horrible, for many reasons. Her staff worked with me to understand how I could have personal top care, fixed a poorly done crown from a past root canal, and painlessly extracted my wisdom teeth. I had been a long time patient of Dr. Amy but upon retirement (with the loss of insurance) decided to try to find a cheaper dentist. After a long search I found a dental group that had the most modern equipment and was significiently cheaper. I am now back with Amy. Going elsewhere was a costly and painful mistake. I read the glowing reviews, and decided this must be the dentist for me. I have moderate dentist-phobia, so the choice was very important to me - I usually go to the dentist like clockwork, but just moved here and it's been a year. I called, and they could not take me for 2 months. But, I waited, thinking she must be amazing and so worth it. The hygienist, Megan, was great - very personable, calming, competent, and got her job done efficiently - the stars are for her. She had a question about one of my teeth, and went to consult "Dr. Amy" as everyone calls her. Dr. Amy then came in. I think she probably means well, and I won't go into the details, but she was clinical to the point of being rude, and tried to scare me into $2500 worth of dental work that I would have to pay for 100% up front (despite my very good health insurance). I never heard of such a thing. I am going for a second opinion with another dentist. But I will not return to Dr. Amy, because she was so impersonal and cold. BTW, there is a disturbing overabundance of pink in the office. Pink forms you fill out, website in pink, walls painted pink, Dr. Amy dressed head to toe in pink, and I just found out today, their bill mailing envelopes are pink. And speaking of website, Dr. Amy is nothing like her website, which seems cheery, fun, and young. read more

Office staff is great, hygienist is nice and thorough, explaining how I'd been flossing wrong until I got it. Dr. Amy and her hygienist Ashvin have been taking care of my teeth since 1997, and I could not be happier. I left for a brief while when the insurance situation changed, thinking it would be cheaper to use an in-network provider, but ended up paying more for unnecessary dental work performed by that dentist that left my teeth in worse shape. Their work and behavior is very professional, and I have never any doubt that their recommendations are based on my best interest, not theirs. Dr. Amy is awesome. Not only is she knowledgeable, she's great with nervous 4 year olds. My daughter is not too fond of doctors in general but with Dr. Amy, she does great. We had a previous dentist who said we had 8 cavities and needed to come in 4 different times and each time she would need laughing gas and novocaine. No kid would come back after the first time, I don't know why that dentist thought 4 times would make sense. I found Dr. Amy on Yelp and found she also did laser instead of drilling the teeth. We met with her and my daughter was instantly calm with Dr. Amy. After her first appointment and a look at the X-rays, my daughter in actuality only had 2 cavities. We had them filled and my daughter was wiggly but did great. I would highly recommend Dr. Amy. She's not only honest but does a great job. Great for kids especially if you don't want them to fear dentist for the rest of their lives. read more
