I'm a bit of a barbecue snob myself, I actually have two smokers and look for any excuse to use them. The definition of good barbecue to me is having an amazing brisket as it is one of the harder things to smoke correctly. The fact that this account has a try tip sandwich and other innovative and creative menu ideas made me very intrigued. I was actually a little bit worried that with the menu as large as it is and dabbling in so many different things besides barbecue, that the barbecue part of the menu might be sacrificed but that was not the case. Their house barbecue sauce is excellent, the meat was fresh the service was great and everything had a great smoke ring and you can tell it was not yesterday's food like a lot of the other barbecue places in the area. It is actually in an amazing location right down the hill from Hudson Valley community college and a lot of residential and commercial spots. Fledgling barbecue joint that is currently serving out of a food truck while they prepare the building. Stopped here last week and got a sampling of things. Also was able to chat with the owner about his intentions for the place. I like his idea. And I like his food also. There is no substitute for solid barbecue, and on the first shot, they scored with me. We tried moink balls, pulled pork sandwich, and the "I.W.G." Sandwich also. Both of them served with pickles, onions and a side of slaw. These sandwiches were large. Definitely a full meal. Excellent barbecue can always be pegged by the smoke level, and it was proper here. Smokey, spicey, moist - It hits all the right notes. I'm not really a sweet potato guy, but they have a sweet potato side to offer. The girl said they were spectacular. Sprinkled with brown sugar and marshmallows. The location is excellent also. Right next to a small pond with all kinds of wildlife. Nice to sit by the water and enjoy excellent barbecue. I've been to quite a few BBQ places in the Midwest and South. I didn't think I'd ever find a good BBQ place in the area, until now. From the Moink Ball Appetizers to the mouth watering BBQ Ribs, Chicken, and Pulled Pork, not to mention the Collard Greens and Mac and Cheese, you can't lose. My friend took me here on Sunday and I had the Brisket Sandwich. It was love at first bite. So much so that I ordered the Big Family BBQ dinner the following Thursday so I could share the deliciousness with my friends. More than enough food for dinner for a family of 6 and lunch the next day. Lots of outdoor seating, but as it gets colder I recommend using their website to order ahead and pick it up yourself and enjoy at home. Stop in and treat yourself and bring friends. Decent barbecue, substandard sides, no indoor seating. There is plenty of parking at this south Troy BBQ joint. A half dozen picnic table's line the edge of the parking lot. Inside, you order at the counter. There are three small tables inside, but these are not for diners. They are for people to sit at while they're waiting to pick up their order. So if you're looking for an indoor seating barbecue place, this is not it. There are picnic tables outside, which are fine when it's not too cold, not too hot, not too sunny, not too rainy, or not too windy. There are no umbrellas or awnings over the picnic tables. The Iron Works Grill has decent barbecue. The baked beans and the coleslaw come in styrofoam containers and are below average. I can't comment on any of the other sides. Prices are reasonable. My recommendation is if you're in the area, order ahead and get some barbecue to go. Forget about the sides. If the weather is nice, enjoy your barbecue at an outdoor picnic table. read more

New place that's on campbell ave in Troy. They have a giant smoker out front that is constantly running so I had to try it out. I ordered around like 530 on a random weekday. There was one person that ordered before us and two people that were waiting for their orders to come out. We were standing there for about 20 minutes before our food came out. I would highly recommend ordering beforehand. Some people did that and were able to just pick up instead of standing in the heat. The BBQ is 5 stars for sure. Ribs were fall off bone and had a good amount of sauce, the brisket was nice and flavorful. However the meatball was dry, the mac and cheese could use some more cheese and salt, the sandwich could use more sauce and meat. The potato salad was pretty standard. I would say that the sides were just okay, the wait is long, but the BBQ is fantastic read more

Ordered their Thanksgiving Dinner.... Totally disappointed. Started with pick up--- was packaged so that the weight of stacked containers on top "crushed" those below and resulted in spillage of a number of containers. Then the instructions which include instruction for mac and cheese which there was none on the menu and no instructions for the corn bread that seemed have "raw". Then the meal itself- The turkey was passable though little taste, the yams were so runny that they seemed more like a purée, the green beans were more like flimsy pieces of greens rather than beans, the corn bread after baking for 45 minutes at 300... still seemed a bit raw, and the mashed potatoes were just OK...... All three of the adults had the same opinion.. would never order again. read more

I'm always on the lookout for new barbecue restaurants so when I saw Iron Works Grill, I knew I had to see what it was about. I ordered the brisket with mac and cheese. To begin, the brisket was good, but not great. It had good flavor and the fatty ends were delicious, but the brisket was a bit overcooked. The brisket came with a side of homemade bbq sauce which definitely made the brisket better. The sauce was sweet with a nice spice to it. Moreover, the mac and cheese was enjoyable. The noodles were done right and it was cheesy. Also, the mac had a nice breadcrumb topping to it. In conclusion, Iron Works Grill is a fine new barbecue restaurant and I definitely will try it again. read more

An Absolutely amazing BBQ establishment. In order to get the full BBQ experience you need to get the FULL RACK OF RIBS. They also have half rack of ribs, but I strongly suggest the full rack of ribs so you can save some for later! Mac and cheese was great and some of the best potato salad I have ever had in my life. I have been to the Iron Works several times, obviously it was good. However, this time we went we ordered 2 brisket sandwiches and with the first bite I had to spit it out...full of fat. So disappointed spent about $30.00 on two sandwiches and threw them away. Won't be going to Iron works anymore. read more

Really nasty awful chicken. Was not smoked or barbecued it was just a wet very pale looking chicken. No flavor. I refused their bbq sauce because we had it before on some pulled pork and did not care for it but spooning some bbq sauce on top of this meat is not the solution. It's always so satisfying to discover a new dining option that offers a great experience and exceeds expectations. That is exactly what happened when I finally stopped in at Iron Works BBQ with my buddy Murph. Deb greeted us and immediately took us through the menu. I asked for a recommendation for a few of their signature items and she suggested the smoked wings and brisket. I chose 6 wings with their award winning sauce and the brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad. Wings were huge, tender and meaty with a nice smokiness that was complimented nicely with a jerk-style bbq sauce. I could have stopped there but I had to sample the brisket next. Again, a huge portion of perfectly smoked, moist and lean brisket that was one of the most satisfying brisket sandwiches I've had. Potato salad was excellent with a nice amount of whole grain mustard to give it a nice zing. This was definitely some of the best bbq I've had in the area and the prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I just had the best BBQ platter ever! I'm in love with the macaroni and cheese. The owner was so nice and even came out to check on us. One of us was vegetarian and the owner and chef was so friendly and accommodating. Great service, great food and great location next to a little river. New business at the end of Campbell Ave near the Stewies. For now they're working out of the owners food truck in the parking lot due to pending buildong inspections. The smoker they use is situated next to the road and you can smell the beautiful wood smoke from South Troy. I immediately proceeded to buy a full rack, because if you can't get that right, you can't call yourself a BBQ joint. Cost was restaurant pricing ($28), but it fell off the bone, the rub he used was amazing, and the sauce was smoky/sweet. The rest of my table got jalapeno sausages and something called a moink ball sub. A moink ball is a bacon wrapped meatball, it's utterly delicious. Small menu place, but just for now I expect and the sandwiches are very reasonably priced. Definitely worth a trip (only 10 min away for me) and definitely worth a trip back. read more

This place got a great review recently in our local newspaper, so I decided to make a special trip to Troy to pick up two pulled pork sandwiches. Didn't realize a side was included, so got two sides of cornbread with it. They were very accommodating when I asked if they could give me the bbq sauce and coleslaw on the side, because I had a ways to travel and didn't want the sandwiches to get soggy on my way home. These sandwiches were amazing. The pork was tender and lean with just the right amount of smoke flavor. The bun was of good quality and was toasted perfectly. The sauce was the best bbq sauce I have ever had. Not too sweet and not too thick. Just the way I like it. The cornbread was good as were the oatmeal raisin cookies I got for dessert. I have been looking or a good bbq place ever since Moe's, which was just down the street from here, went out of business many years ago. I have finally found what I have been looking for. What an amazing find! Their pulled pork sandwiches are the best I have ever had. The barbecue sauce is flavorful and subtle, completing the sandwhich and not drenching and overpowering it. I have lived in the North and South, and this place has it down pat. Their cole slaw is very tasty and again flavorful without drenching the slaw in mayonaise or vinegar. By far, the best coleslaw I have ever had. Today I had their ribs, which were perfectly done. The barbecue sauce had a little bit of heat along with smoke and sweetness but it completed the ribs rather than drowning it in sauce. Best barbecue sauce and ribs I have ever had. The french fries were thinly sliced, crispy on the outside and hot on the inside. Not soggy or overcooked. Just perfect, even after a 10 minute takeout drive home. I also had their collard greens. Cooked with generous pieces of lean pork and simmered in a broth that was just perfect. This place is a rare find. Once they are truly discovered I suspect there will be long lines. Right now, it sits in an inconspicuous lot in an old industrial area of Troy, with a funky mural on a wall outside. read more
