There are several better places for bagels in State College. The bagel we ordered first came without an egg, even though the order was just cheese and an egg. The crew was gracious and apologetic, and sent out a new bagel that had eggshells in it. That aside, we ordered a veggie morning wrap and it was totally bland. I've only ever had Irving's catering but that still earns them a 4 star review based on the bagels, cream cheese spreads and mini quiches. Typically at events/meetings we have an assortment of bagels - I've never had a bagel from Irving's I didn't like. But their veggie cream cheese, OH MY WORD, I'd give it that alone 5 stars!!! Great place to study, although it can get very loud. The coffee is pretty good, worth the arm that they charge. I finally had their breakfast special egg, cheese and meat on a bagel. This was a big deal because i worked at a bagel shop for years, making my own. Of course, it was delicious. Bacon, egg and cheese on a wheat bagel. Overall it was satisfying. The bagel was definitely buttered and toasted. The bacon was really, really thin but they layered it so there was enough. It seemed like it was one egg and comes with two slices of cheese. If you're a Penn State student, you've most likely posted up at Irving's at least once; even if you were just meeting someone who was already there. It's a really spacious area and the high ceilings and open layout really spreads everything out from the tables to where the food is prepared. They are big on quality in their ingredients and the Manager, John, is a hardworking guy to keep everything together. Sometimes the music and conversations can make it loud to concentrate, but perhaps you can try finding a seat downstairs. Awesome Menu! The menu has such a large variety, where it can most likely grab something you're in the mood for. From breakfast style specials, lunch/seasonal sandwiches and wraps, smoothies, coffee and regular pastries, it can be hard to pick. Each option allows you some flexibility to customize what you want. Breakfast Special: I got the standard Breakfast Special (bacon, egg, cheese on a plain bagel). The bagels are great, toasted but chewy. The entire sandwich tasted delicious and would probably eat another because it tasted so good. If you're looking for a breakfast spot, this is a must. One of the best breakfast bagels in State College. Also, I didn't get it this time, but the brownies they serve near the front counter are absolutely awesome. First, they are huge and very filling, but I like brownies to be soft and chewy and that is exactly what these are like. I'll tell you this, the people who work here work HARD. It's definitely not easy with the rush they get from time to time; especially big Penn State weekends. They try to get everyone's order as quick as they can and I think they do a great job. This restaurant has a special place in my heart. I come here since I was a freshman and even though I've tried other coffee places, Irvings will be forever my favorite. Food is delicious and coffee is amazing, but the environment of the place is superior to any other. I come here to study often and I love it! Excellent service too. Also, I usually get the egg, turkey, and cheese bagel with an almond/soy-milk latte/capuccino and YUM. The chai latte is also INCREDIBLE. Nuff said. read more

Boyfriend and I went to get a to go order at about 1:30 pm on a Sunday. We both got the breakfast special with bacon and tomato. The sign said $3.99 but we got charged $4.99 each. $1 for a slice of tomato, really? I also ordered a SOB smoothie. The smoothie was prepared quickly, but it could have been colder and the bananas weren't ripe enough. It wasn't great, but it also wasn't bad. The place was really busy and we waited about 15 minutes to get our food. We ordered to go, but when our number was called our sandwiches were sitting baskets. No biggie, I asked the girl to make it to go and she wrapped them up. So we walk across the street and lay out a blanket near Old Main to sit down and eat our sandwiches. Oh and by the way we're starving at this point. We each bite into our sandwiches and neither one has any egg in it. HOW DO YOU FORGET THE EGG ON A BREAKFAST SANDWICH? I was going to go back and ask for a refund, but I was so hungry and the bagel was so good anyway I just wanted to eat it. Overall bad experience but the food was still tasty. Coffee, coffee, coffee!!! And tasty tasty muffins!!!! I love me some starbucks don't get me wrong, but when I am traveling especially, I love to try and check out and support the local cafes, and Irvings is definitely worth the trip. I am a coffee snob and their coffee tasted fresh, and definitely started off my morning right. And it was strong too, which is something I firmly believe in--strong coffee. I don't understand drinking coffee that isn't strong, because really you know you are drinking it in the first place for a pick me up ha, but not a place with lots of coffee options flavor wise if you are into fancy coffees and things like that. But their bagels and muffins that they have made and will arrange for pick up in breakfast trays for meetings are SO TASTY. Their sesame seed bagel was perfect, but their little mini blueberry muffins, had me going back for seconds!! You know how when you find a good muffin, once you start eating it, you wonder where the heck did the rest of my muffin go?? Ya, well that's how you feel eating one of these!!! Sooo they have lox... which is by far the biggest plus. No clue if it's "good lox," but it is totally satisfactory to my Midwestern palate. The sandwiches I've had there have also been super tasty, if a bit messy. But by far the two biggest downsides are a. it's kind of overpriced and b. service is seriously bad. Just PUTTING CREAM CHEESE ON A FREAKING BAGEL can take up to 15 minutes... probably because the staff (who appear to all be in high school) think they're being paid to text and chat with each other rather than make my food. I know this makes me sound like a curmudgeon, but it's true. It's why I don't go here very often anymore... I just feel like I would rather be doing other things with my time. I did have one extra-annoying experience where I ordered lox cream cheese and paid for it, only to have them tell me they were out and ask if I wanted another kind of cream cheese (even though lox is the most expensive by like two dollars!), and I was in a hurry so I said "fine," and then my order took literally forever and THEN they actually gave me some other person's breakfast sandwich on a pumpernickel bagel, which I didn't notice because I didn't open the bag until I was back at my desk. To their credit, though, I emailed the owners and they apologized and sent me a $15 gift card... so that was pretty sweet. Came here for a very early breakfast. I understand State College is a small town but it's really hard to mess up breakfast. Irving's dropped the ball on dominating breakfast despite being directly across from Penn State and having a huge dining area. Ordered a bacon egg and cheese on rye. The egg tasted old and the cheese was comparable to being a slice of some cheap imitation of Kraft white american cheese. The bacon on the other hand was crunchy and was the only thing saving the sandwich from utter failure. Still their bacon, egg and cheese is far from delectable and memorable. Now the thing about breakfast is that should you choose to eat out it's either because you crave something special and can't make it at home or pure convenience. Go to Irving's for the smoothies/shakes, not the food or service. I've been to Irving's the last two nights for dinner just because people were craving sandwiches and it was convenient. They promised me awesome fresh bread, so I said yes. They lied to me. Night 1: St. Patty's Day, and all they have left are plain and wheat bagels. Umm, for an establishment whose main attraction is their breads, why don't you have any at 7:30pm when you don't close until 10pm? So I got the bagel and lox because it made the most sense, except that they slathered a good half inch thick of cream cheese on each bagel half, and I had to scrape off about half of it. Night 2: Four sandwiches apparently takes a good 15-20 minutes to assemble when there are three workers back there. Why? Well it appears only of them of them is actually doing any work and making the sandwiches all by herself. Another one stopped looking at containers of fruit to text on her phone. And one from the back came out to finish putting the containers of fruit into the fridge, at which point the texting worker finally puts down her phone and says,"Oh, I totally forgot what I was doing!" You're definitely not working and getting my sandwich out any faster, that's for sure. To be fair, they did have bread this time, but I asked for Italian and got sourdough. I got the baja chicken club, and again they slathered on the "creole mayo" so it was very messy to eat. For 50 cents more I'd rather go to Panera and get a bigger, better sandwich with an apple on the side. Their smoothies are a little pricey ($4 each), but good though. read more

The Perfect Breakfast!!! I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a morning person, but sadly on this particular rainy morning I was up bright and early. I had a destination at the far side of town, my two feet to carry me there and an empty stomach in need of nourishment. I walked past all the usual places along College Ave. with no interest (sorry Starbucks, I still do hate you) until I came across Irving's. Now I've been to Irving's on multiple occasions, but mostly for lunch or a late evening snack. (Their sandwiches and smoothies... Bangin!! Absolute delicious! The food just taste fresh. Blend that with the perfect combination of ingredients and locally produced foods and homemade products and you have a tasty treat for your belly) I have never noticed that they were open for breakfast, and on this cold rainy day the warm lights just seemed like a good stoping point. I will say I was not disappointed They have a variety of homemade pastries, muffins and other baked goods to choose from that from the counter looked heavenly. An army of tasty little bagels lined the wall behind the cashier/Batista, all proudly labeled with the 'Fresh made - Boiled, then Baked' badge. The Coffee selection was simple, but in my eyes perfect. I'm not a coffee snob, but I can smell fresh coffee a mile away, especially when it's strong. It all looked appetizing until I saw the one cover all menu item for me, The 'All Day Breakfast Sadwich'. Egg White, Cheddar Cheese and your choice of Bacon, Canadian Bacon, Sausage or Deli Meat selection all layered between a fresh Bagel of your choice. I opted for the Ham, given the sausage wasn't ready yet, along with a medium coffee. My number was called before I even had time to pour my coffee. After taking my first bite into that tasty bagel I was hooked! It was perfect! I man couldn't ask for anything more from a first meal. I will return anytime I'm ever up this early again and I highly advise you do too. read more

I usually stop at Irving's for a sandwich. The lunch rush can get a little crazy, but honestly, the sandwiches are delicious if you can spare a few minutes to wait. I think the prices are fair given the quality of the ingredients. The sandwiches are always excellent quality, fresh and never too heavy. This is the best place in town, by far, to get a bagel. In State College that's not saying much, but still. Their breads are fresh and baked in-house, too. I think my favorite thing about Irving's has got to be the cozy, comfy basement- the perfect study space. I wish I had more excuses to get out of lab and sit in Irving's basement! read more

Every college needs a great bagel spot... and Irving's perfectly embodies that for State College. The large, bright space can easily accommodate a Saturday morning crowd (and a long line). JJ and I went early on a Saturday so he could introduce me to the place. We decided to split a bagel and salad. We both got coffee, too. Bagels: the sausage, egg, and cheese (American) was so yummy that I ate my half immediately. This sandwich had cheese on both parts of the bagel, which made for extra goo and happiness on my part. The sausage and egg were exactly on point. They advertised using the old way to make bagels (boiled and baked) and the technique really showed--my bagel was soft inside with a little bit of chew and the outer part was also pleasantly chewy. Salad: we got the fruit and nut salad, which had a creamy strawberry dressing that was served on the side, plenty of mixed greens, feta cheese, fruit, and walnuts. They really pack it in, so there was plenty for us both, but it was unfortunately served in a to-go container, so it was really hard not to make a mess. Coffee: served piping hot and we were both unable to drink it for at least ten minutes. I would have preferred to have been able to drink it with my meal, but it was good once it cooled down. Irving's really excels at the breakfast food and that's when you should make it your priority to go, but it is open all day which makes it a nice place to stop for sandwiches and salads, plus milkshakes and smoothies. read more

I can be lured in to any place if someone tells me there will be bagels. I haven't come to Irving's that many times during my time in State College, however every time I go I always make sure to order one of two things (and if I feeling saucy then both): A bagel and a smoothie. My personal favorite is the pizza bagel--definitely not pizza by nature but does its best to compete. The reason I like it is because it reminds me of mini pizza bagels, but full grown and ready to take care of your pizza bagel needs. I also enjoy getting the Joe Papaya smoothie. Very tasty, a little on the sweet side for me and probably anyone else who likes a more wholesome smoothie fitted with kale, super fruits, and other members of the like. Checking in at about $4.50 a cup, sure its "expensive" but there are some people who will pay $10 for 16 oz of pressed juice. *ahem* sometimes me as well. I think a lot of people like this place for the atmosphere and because I guess it is conveniently located. Also many people probably just like to hangout there "studying"/"working" just to people watch and seek attention. Last thing I had was portobello mushroom sandwich with giant cap between bread. It was good but small and expensive for what you get...could eat 3 of those. Coffees are okay and really not anything that will make me ask the casher: where can I buy the beans? Fancy coffee drinks? Never tried them. I figure that if the beans used for regular brews are not special then the "base" for the fancy drinks won't be either...maybe I am wrong. The sandwiches were a bit small for the price. I got the Sonoma Turkey and asked for it with no onions. They gave them to me anyway. No big deal. I can pull them off, but in the process the little Russian dressing on the sandwich came off with them. The sandwich ended up being pretty dry and not so enjoyable. This was my first time here and I got a large iced latte with soy milk and chocolate syrup flavoring. I didn't realize the iced lattes were more expensive than the hot lattes (which is wrong in my opinion). They charged 50 cents for a different milk and 50 cents for the chocolate flavor. Here's the problem with Irving's: consistency. They don't have it. I'm not sure if it's the staff turnover, product supply, management, etc., but something about Irving's is always a little off. Case in point: out of the past month, I have been to Irving's on four occasions. I left without food/smoothies three out of four times because they didn't have the ingredients necessary to make said food/smoothies. Really? You don't have yoghurt? Or bananas? I understand that it's more cost efficient to buy in bulk for your business, but if you're out of basic supplies and you are (quite literally) around the corner from a grocery store (McLanahan's)--can't you go get some? A lot of reviewers have commented on the staff/service. Meh. Irving's is staffed by college kids who don't have too much invested in it. I don't expect much service at a counter joint. I've gotten some attitude, but...I've also seen the owner's mother/grandmother/mother-in-law (?) bark at a few workers, so maybe the environment isn't that much fun in which to work. It's a shame they can't get their act together because when they're stocked (with the food/ingredients they have on their menu), they're tasty. Then again, they always have business. I think they rely on their location and history in the community; with those two things, they have a guaranteed market and they don't necessarily have to worry about supplies or service-with-a-smile. read more

I've only been here a few times because most of the time I just get to go. The food is okay, I had the soup of the day and it was pretty good for a small cafe. The setting is your typical establishment and it's actually quite spacious. They also have a downstairs for more seating and more tables and couches for studying or group work. The one time I went downstairs to study it smelled really weird in the fall. Maybe there was weird ventilation. I'm not sure. The most important part of this review is that I highly recommend trying their laguna peach smoothie! After trying that flavor, I have never gone back to another one. read more
