I've been to Bagel Crust on Calder several times and have never been disappointed! The bagel sandwiches are always hot and tasty, and they offer fresh orange juice and coffee to make the perfect breakfast. Their menu items can be a bit expensive (around $5 for a sandwich), but I think they are worth every penny. My only complaint is that there is very limited seating inside the restaurant. On Penn State game days or weekends, it also gets incredibly busy and can take awhile to receive your food. However, they offer online ordering to skip the line! Bagel Crust in State College, Pa Today in the morning, I spent more or less 5 hours in the Colombian Cafe, Barranquero Café. I got hungry at about 1pm, and remembered that the business next to it was a Sandwich place prepared by Colombians as well. I run to the restaurant and got a beef bagel sandwich with onions, tomatoes, cheese and beef on a everything bagel. By the way, I had the pleasure to meet the owner a few weekends ago, and he was there today.--We have a saying in Colombia, "the master's eyes fattens the camel."-- That explains why this guy is always in running the restaurant. Anyways, he was there; super nice and smilie as usual. We conversed for a couple of minutes while my meal was ready. He told me they prepare the bagels themselves, and that he learned working with jewish bread makers many years ago when his business started. Colombians are hardworking people, excellent workers, smart and disciplined; this guy is a great example about it. Anyways... My meal was a home baked bagel sandwich with thin slices of beef, onions, tomatoes, and american cheese. The bread was soft, I am almost sure it was baked this early morning. On the side you can choose between fries, potato salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw salad. I chose the later. I loved the salad for one reason. Cole slaw is originally cut finely. In the US, I have rarely found this kind of chop in a cole slaw salad, so, I was really happy about it. A hint of sweet pineapple was the flavor I could catch, although I am not sure about it. I have to ask them. If you are coming to State College to the Penn State football games, this is a great opportunity to pass by and try their bagels. Otherwise, if you do not have time to sit and have a meal, I recommend you to order to go or for you to prepare at home. Finally, you will see in my review a bunch of pics of cream cheese kinds: veggie, with lox, strawberry flavor and plenty of others. I loved this place when it first opened years ago but sadly success has gone to their heads and the bagels are shrinking each year. They are now so small it's hard to make sandwich's from them. Really good bagels, and the price isn't bad. My favorites are the rainbow, asiago, everything, and garlic (but beware that the garlic burns if you get it toasted). Usually I order my bagels toasted with plain cream cheese. I tried the jalapeno cheddar cream cheese once, but it was just alright. Only giving it 3/5 stars because lately the service has been very shitty. The staff is friendly, but the last couple times I've visited, it's taken over 5 minutes to get a simple bagel with cream cheese, and they didn't even pretend to toast it! Lame af, especially considering that they weren't even busy. If this continues, I'll take my business to Irving's. read more

Crap location, crap service, crap lettuce & tomato, and crap smell. Bagels are ok, but for the over-promoted reviews of this place on local media, the bagels don't live up to the hype. I can get better bagels from Panera. Any ways, I stopped in to try them for lunch. I arrived about 12:15pm and they were packed from counter to door with students. I thought, "ok, they might be really good if they have this much business". Well, I was completely wrong in that initial assessment. The closer you get to the counter, the more your clothes are going to stink for hours afterwards thanks to their insufficient ventilation system. It smelled like someone didn't know what they're doing when they designed the place. Worse, the cooks must have burned who knows how many bagels over the last 15 minutes. The line was long, to the door, so it took 10 minutes just to place my order, but only may be 5 minutes to get it. But this wasn't a long line in number of people (may be 5 in front of me), but long in terms of space, because this shop is SMALL! No where to really sit when they're busy. I ordered two different bagels to check this place out: a salami sandwich with lettuce and tomato, and a PB&J bagel. The lettuce from the salami sandwich was turning brown. Worse, the tomatoes felt and tasted like they'd been accidentally frozen then thawed. It was a mess. The PB&J was ok, but they didn't put much PB nor J on the bagel, and the wrapper they had it in was covered in PB, as if the line prep person wiped their hands all over it when they're done. A big disappointment. See photos of both of these miserable orders. Their bagel selection was extremely limited. They had no Asiago when I arrived. And from looking over their bins, half of the bagel types were gone. This is right at the peak of lunch time and they don't know how to keep their bagels in stock? Very sad. Then there's the service. Wow. It's bad. The girl taking my order was nice, but completely clueless. When I was giving her my order, she interrupted me to ask questions I already answered in the order. Then she blurted out, "we don't have salami". Really? I replied, "but it's right there on the board". She said, "oh yeah, there it is" and put my order through. The guy at the pick up counter had a major attitude, as if he didn't want to ever be there in the first place. He put my order on the counter. No bag, no nothing in which to carry it. I asked, "could I get this in a bag?" He pulled out a stack of paper bags from below, and handed me. Folded. He didn't offer to bag it for me. He didn't even bother to open the bag for me. What a jerk. Bagel Crust, I'm a local, so I would have been one of your regular customers in that desperate, dry season when all of the students leave town. I got an asiago bagel and home fries from here. The bagel was very bready and was the right balance of soft and hard. It was good. The home fries were decent, I typically like more cooked and crunchy home fries. These were more soft and the chunks were large. The staff was a bit rude, the girl behind the counter had an attitude and the rest of the staff was being unfriendly as well. It wasn't packed so there really wasn't an excuse for the attitudes. My boyfriend asked the girl how she was doing and she disregarded him just trying to get him to order. He refused to until she started being nice. Idk if these are local stores or a state thing. I called ahead as I was running errands. A bacon egg and cheese on an egg bagel and a bacon egg and swiss on a roll (glad I forgot to ask price). Little did I know calling ahead was a time saver. When I got there the line was out the door! I walked right in and they ket me skip the line to pay. How much I ask....the gentleman say $11.24. I ask again to make sure I heard him lol. This does not include any coffee or juice. I confusingly pay for it as when we get the same back home it's about $8/$9 max. Well we didn't wait to get back to see what the line was all about (btw I didn't read prior reviews). As we sat parked in front it started making perfect sense. We just hoped they tasted as good as they looked. The roll was not your typical poppy seed or plain. More like a fresh bakery product. It was soft and buttery. My daughter's egg bagel was super fresh. In both the eggs were cooked perfectly and there was enough bacon. We enjoyed these sandwiches tremendously. Sadly we won't be back in State College... at least for awhile so this was well worth the $11.24! If you're visiting give them a try. read more

This is BY FAR, my favorite place to go in town. The bagels are to die for, (they're actually New York bagels unlike some "New York style" pizza places here) have great coffee and the staff is so friendly. The manger greets me every time I walk in! They're also always fully stocked so you never have to worry about going in and not getting what you originally wanted. My only critique is that the place is somewhat small so when it gets crowded there's not a lot of room to sit. Warning: If you are under time pressure, stay away from Bagel Crust!! After being a repeat customer for many months, enjoying the best bagels around State College but with very lucrative service, I'm throwing in the towel. Although they may have not yet been open even a year, one would think the crew behind the counter would get their game together. The service is slow, impersonal, and unprofessional. I hate to tarnish a good bagel in a place where it's hard to find, but after going to return my order twice in 30 minutes, I became fed up and had to help other Yelpers. Having personally worked in a bagel shop in New Jersey, I have first hand knowledge of the morning rush, especially on weekend mornings and around the holidays. Bagel Crust has not even mastered a basic morning rush. It is not uncommon that I have waited around, with others around me doing the same, for 10-15 minutes at least for a simple bagel with egg and cheese. This order, back home, would take a matter of a few minutes, and without all of the grease and uncut bagel. To end my rant, I would have much hope for Bagel Crust if they can improve, without even mastering, the art of customer service and speedy delivery. The bagels are good, business execution is poor. How come with all the New Yorkers and New Jerseyans, we cannot get a decent bagel establishment? Maybe one tip that would make everything more efficient, ditch the digital ordering system and iPad and use quick old pen and paper. read more

I stopped in a few weeks back, and the bagel I got was good. Nothing mind-blowing, but ok. But, after returning today and experiencing some of the worst management and customer service of my life, I can honestly say no matter the quality I will never return to Bagel Crust. I knew going in that it would likely be crowded, given that it's move-in weekend. But taking a while to order wasn't the problem...the line moved fast enough, and the girl at the register was nice and apologized for the wait. But after placing our order (two BCE bagel sandwiches - a pretty standard order), we ended up waiting over 20 minutes before I had to move up to the counter and ask where our order was. After the guy at the counter went looking for our order and making a pretty lame excuse about our order being difficult (an excuse he gave to at least one other customer while we were on line), he then picked up two sandwiches that had been sitting forgotten about on the counter for 10 MINUTES and handed them to me. I pointed this fact out since I was pretty ticked off at this point. He responded by mumbling an apology, shrugging his shoulders and saying there was nothing else he could do. I'm not sure exactly what I said at that point (pretty sure it wasn't complimentary), and he responded to it with an extremely argumentative tone. At that point, I just left. It wasn't worth getting into it further. I get that it's a new place, and they're probably understaffed, but customer service is a basic thing. If you screw something up, own up to it, give a sincere apology, and try to rectify it somehow, perhaps with a refund offer or a coupon. Extremely poor service, and as a native New Yorker from NYC this is not a TRUE NY EXPERIENCE AT ALL because a true NY location that operated like this would be out of business pretty quickly. They are making these faux-bagels on the cheap. Absolutely no flavor at all. Also, it looks like they use food coloring to shade the bagels to look like pumpernickel because they certainly don't taste like pumpernickel, and they're an odd orange tinted color. They've been in business long enough to have a system down and they say they have other locations in MD & FL so what's the story here? Just as the other reviews state; terrible service, greasy food that takes forever to be made and they are usually out of 1/2 of their bagel selections. Sure, maybe service is terrible in New York, but this is State College, PA. I expect some sort of customer service and an actual bagel selection. I would expect staff to know that The Soprano is to come on a roll, not to ask me what I want it on. Then, you would expect them to have at least 1 of your first 3 selections. I thought Dunkin Donuts was bad for always being out of donuts, but this place is exactly the same. Also, I was the only person in the store one day, ordered 3 sandwiches and it took 17-minutes to get my food. Two of the three employees on duty were playing with a dog one of their girlfriends brought in. A dog, IN THE STORE! Last time I went there... Just skip the veggies. It is shredded iceberg that is bad (just look at the photos) and the tomatoes are always junk. They used to do delivery on OrderUp, but now they only offer takeout via their online system via Squareup, and well, it is not a good system. The bacon is good and cooked well, but the eggs are cooked in some sort of grease (I think Whirl, which is a fake butter substitute). The bagels are toasted in the same grease giving it a funky taste. The reuben was awful. A combination of the grease and a bad Russian dressing caused it to get thrown away. If they actually have the roll, the Soprano is good, but it could use real lettuce. Lastly, I wouldn't use the creamer as it is "keep refrigerated" but every time I have been there it is just sitting on the counter, not on ice or anything. Save yourself all the issues and go to Fraser Street Deli. You get more meat, and it is Boar's Head as well on fresh bagels. read more
