Had a great experience with Dr. Cohen! I dropped something heavy on my big right toe when I was younger and the toe nail began to grow up instead of out. He saw my toe nail and scheduled me for surgery two weeks later. Actually worked out great since I'm not leaving the house with "shelter in place." I was really nervous and anxious about getting my toe nail removed. Dr. Cohen assured me that I would not feel a thing and asked how easy it was for my teeth to get numb at the dentist. I responded with not easy, I always have to tell them "I can still feel it!" He made sure my toe was extra numb. And I didn't feel a thing! He checked on me continuously during the procedure, making sure I was okay. And had me come back every couple of days to assure that the healing process was going well. I felt taken care of and had nothing to worry about. Dr. Cohen and I really built a rapport and at appointments felt like I was hanging out with an Uncle or family member. The day started out like all the others this past spring. My wife and I, now retired, did some chores in the morning, had lunch and now set out for our daily 10,000 step walk around San Francisco where we live. This daily walk; our only form of exercise. Half way to that 10,000 step goal, unexpectedly, on flat terrain, I felt a sharp pain in my left foot near my ankle. I kind of limped home. "It must be a sprain", I thought, and put some ice on it that night. The pain didn't go away after 3 weeks. And although I still managed to go out for a walk each day during that period, I knew that something had to be seriously wrong for a pain not to go away for 3 weeks. My friend urged me to go see his foot doctor; Dr. Irwin Cohen, who unfortunately had his practice in Half Moon Bay; a hard place to get to when you don't possess a car and live in San Francisco. But I decided that since my friend wouldn't let up with his strong urgings, I'd make the 3 hour public transit journey down to see him. And I'm glad I did. It turned out that because of my flat feet and irresponsibly not using my old worn-out orthotics any longer on our walks each day, I injured a ligament near my ankle. Dr. Cohen made me the most amazing orthotics. When I came down to get them in Half Moon Bay, I was having an exceptionally painful day. As soon as I put my left foot into my shoe with the new orthotics the pain just went away immediately. I was stunned. Dr. Cohen explained what was happening before and after inserting the orthotics. While the explanation was interesting to listen to, all I could do was walk around in a daze murmuring, "I can't believe it! I can't believe I can walk without pain again after all these weeks." I had to go to Dr Cohen when I got in a motorcycle accident. Stanford ER told me I had a sprained ankle, sewed up my knee and sent me home. My PCP told me she couldn't do anything so referred me to see a podiatrist. I found Dr Cohen. He saw me right away, upon examination of my ankle he suspected more than a sprain. I got MRIs and found out I actually had broken my ankle in two places. He referred me to another specialist for my knee which had a torn meniscus. He went above and beyond what any doctor has ever done for me. If Dr Cohen was a PCP I would switch to him in a second. He's simply the best doctor I've ever had. Period. Irwin Cohen is a straight talking, tell em like it is, kind of a doctor. I went to see him for inserts, which ended up being too big. I saw him to get them slightly resized, but since my feet are pretty particular (I guess) he recommended I DIY the resizing with sandpaper! Which has actually worked pretty well. So yeah. Lisa S., my review is not a "lie", just as your review is not the "truth". These are opinions based on experience, hopefully as unbiased as possible. I saw Dr. Cohen twice. On one of these occasions, I asked about treating my toenail fungus. The only solution he suggested was to take a medicine called Lamasil, which is potentially damaging to some organs such as the liver (he admitted this). Since I already have liver problems, Lamasil was not a good choice. He agreed with this. Since then I have seen another podiatrist who gave me another solution; using a laser to kill the fungus. And if you search the web, you will find other possible treatments from doctors. As to collecting his fee, within a few weeks of my visit he was calling me to get his money. Much more aggressive than any other doctor I've dealt with (and I see a lot of doctors). read more

Great podiatrist with Brooklyn charm! Funny, warm, thorough with great follow-up. He also saw an elderly friend of ours who was in his late 90s and wheelchair bound from a stroke. Dr. Cohen has been my podiatrist for the past 8 years. During that time, he has continuously gone "above and beyond the call of duty" to resolve the foot problems inherent with my diabetes. He is a dedicated & caring professional who has the utmost concern for his patient's well-being. For example, Dr. Cohen performed a surgical procedure on my left foot in December, 2011. As part of the follow-up, Dr. Cohen met me at his office on four different Saturday's, outside of normal office hours, to ensure that the sutures and bones were healing properly. I went to see Dr. Cohen for some strange pain in my foot. After a lot of research I thought it might be tendonitis, but he informed me that it was not presenting itself as tendonitis. He is a VERY no nonsense New Yorker, which I liked...he utilized ultrasound, watched me walk on it, did some minor tests to see if my tendons were inflamed, recommended that I get an MRI, and ultimately gave me a cortizone shot. He was very understanding when I told him I couldn't afford an MRI. Negatives: I wish he had explained to me more what a cortizone shot was...he prepped my foot, then just kinda stuck the needle in, even though he was unsure if it was a nerve or a joint. (maybe that difference doesn't matter, but still, I would have liked to be more informed). Although he did utilize many tactics to try to figure out my foot problem, towards the end he seemed to be in a rush. I think he had somewhere to be, so maybe that wouldn't be a problem if he was not worried about being late to a meeting. But he did answer all my questions and said I could call if I had any more. After an accident in January this year, I found that I needed surgery to repair a displaced fracture of the fifth metatarsal (small bone on outside of the foot). I was referred to Dr Cohen since it was a work related injury and he takes Workers Comp. insurance. And he's local, another big plus for me. Long story short, he has been excellent...kind, caring, very skilled and responsive to my questions during the recovery process. I saw four specialists before going ahead with the surgery ( -and the crutches, no driving, ortho-boot, etc. that go with it-) and feel very lucky to have ended up with Dr. C. He did a great job, and I have my foot (and soon my running) back! We came to Dr. Cohen after my son broke/crushed his foot. Dr. Cohen's office is staffed with professional and friendly staff. He made us feel very welcome and had gone above and beyond for our son. Dr. Cohen could have just looked at our son's x-rays and made a judgment on treatment based on his own knowledge, but he went above and beyond and enlisted the opinions of several other podiatrists to be sure that he was offering our son the best procedure to ensure that he would not suffer from a lifelong injury. Our son is only 8 years old, and Dr. Cohen knew exactly how to treat the break on his foot and understood that pediatric bones are quite different from that of a mature human. Dr. Cohen even caught more detailed information that was overlooked by his regular doctor. We believe that our son received the absolute best in the business for his broken foot. Dr. Cohen also catered to our son's age by making him feel safe and happy and even joked with him to ease his stress. Dr Cohen changed my life! I saw Dr Cohen after seeing over 5 other doctors for pain in my left metatarsal foot pad that progressively spread to my ankle and right foot and prevented my from working and even walking. He performed a simple exam on my foot and obtained a full history of events and knew exactly what was wrong. Since my first visit with him, about a month ago, I am finally able to walk and resume my daily activities. He made me custom orthotics and follows up on my status regularly. Other doctors gave up on why I was having pain in my feet and even started telling me it was 'in my head'. However, Dr. Cohen has continued to work with me to figure out the problem and maintain treatment to ensure this problem never comes back. Dr Cohen is one of the most genuine people I've ever meet. His out look on life and patient care is healing, not like the treatment you receive from some 'money hungry doctors' at larger facilities. I have seen 4 podiatrists about my Jones fracture (5th metatarsal). It is a notoriously slow or NON-healing fracture. One Dr. was lousy, one was nonchalant, one was forthright and knowledgeable but it was ONLY Dr. Cohen who did more to help than the other 3 combined. Not only was he forthright, knowledgeable but also kind and very helpful, had a sense of humor. While both of his keen and competent assistant s were out, he was kind enough to help me with my paperwork without an appointment, and while he was already doing the work of three! Not only that, but the first time I saw him he asked if I wanted to see if they could get a bone growth simulator. "Yes! Very much so!" I replied with gratitude. He was the first Dr to even ask.
