Well, damn. This Dr.'s appt. was surreal. I've been to dozens, hundreds (not hyperbole) of medical visits in my 61 yrs., and this one was beyond bomb! Less than 2 min. wait time, we were ushered in, with a mini tour, the place is spartan clean, sterile, snazzy, bells and whistles, not that I was looking for it. Shareen, the medical assistant, is on the ball, not phoning it in, kind, sweet, gracious, efficient, lively conversationalist, collecting pertinent info., and making it less mundane than it otherwise might've been. I get shown to the examining room, and no joke: Guess what? I'm besides myself, a kid were it not for my stupid foot, I'd be jumping up and down, because I got a gift, with my name in huge letters, sucker that I am for anything personalized, I'm a total child at heart! And yes, obviously I know all new patients get it and it's smart marketing business practice blah blah .. but do I give a crap? No, I do not give a rats ass, because I LOVE presents and gifts, especially when they're beautifully wrapped in tissue paper and gift bag ... is it a bird, a puppy ... no, it's a H2O bottle! Yay :-) Was I in a fancy schmancy hotel or spa or Dr.'s office? WTF was going on here? But I was along for the ride. It felt too good for anything else. While waiting for the Dr., we (my husband and I) were asked if we wanted anything to drink, and got water. Less than 5 min., later Dr. Wilhelm comes in, super chill and personable, does a thorough exam, identifies flat footedness, recommends a variety of footwear, stretches, and a referral to my existing PT. I was ready and willing to fork over for custom orthotics, but given I'm the farthest thing from an athlete, I never wear closed shoes and socks + just had spinal fusion surgery, that intervention would've been overkill and steroid injections not an option either, not that they do that as a first line intervention, which the conservative nature of this reassured me. I looooved this office: every single person in that place is incredibly attentive and present, e.g. it's a small thing but felt truly big to me--when we were leaving, the two receptionists at the front desk went out of their way to say goodbye. It's these gestures that bring humanity back to medicine. If ever I have a foot issue again, I'm 100% confident that I go back here in a heartbeat; I really liked and trust Dr. Wilhelm. Never mind that I use them relentlessly over 15 hours of the day, I take my feet for granted, unless something goes wrong. It's great to know I have a podiatrist. Though my visit was only a few days ago, I've been wearing my OOFOS slides and clogs, OMG I have been missing out, no socks necessary! And my plantar fasciitis pain is already significantly better! Holy shit! Ya know the movies 'Stepford Wives'? and 'RoboCop'? Minus the dark, ominous undertones + sprinkling of song, fairy dust, sun, glitter and rainbow, this office is the love child of both films :-) Precision, perfect execution, hitting it out of the park, slam dunk, home run, touchdown ... fill in with sports metaphor of your choice. I felt better walking out than when I hobbled in, lol :-)

Then he told me he wanted to get an x-ray, which didn't seem to make a lot of sense for a muscle injury. Coincidentally, the MD owns an x-ray machine. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail? After the x-ray, which showed nothing different than previous MRI's provided him, he tells me probably a sprain or strain, to rest for one month and c/b for a new appointment if still not better. Once I recovered from my cortisone flareup, my elbow felt brand new. Unfortunately, my elbow decided to act up and the tennis elbow pain returned. Reluctant to get another shot, Dr. Hazelrig suggested laser treatment. He was going to send me off sight for the service but realized my medical insurance would not cover it. I think he felt sorry for me, so he decided to laser me up in his office. There has not been enough time passed in order to know if the lazier works, but I do appreciate Dr. Hazelrig's efforts and the fact he administered a treatment he felt would help me. These are the things I like: 1-Dr. Hazelrig 2-his staff 3-the fact it is a one stop shop (x-rays and all) 4-fast and friendly service 5-communication From my past experiences, I find it difficult to find a doctor I like. Dr. Hazelrig has changed that for me.

It's hard to review a surgeon on Yelp. It seems like boiling it down to "did they fix my body or…read morenot?" is overly simplistic - every situation is different with different treatments and likelihoods of success, and the surgeon is doing the critical part of their work inside your body while you are asleep. Ok, so with all that being said, I have had a great experience working with Dr. Kim and the staff here (and at Mills Health Center). After an unfortunate fall while skateboarding at the beginning of July, I went to urgent care (in San Carlos) on a whim and came away with a referral to Dr. Kim and a recommendation to have surgery. From the beginning he was attentive and friendly and walked me through what happened (part of my shoulder socket bone had broken off and was too far away from the rest of the bone to heal properly). I was scheduled to have surgery later that week. On the day-of, I was well-taken care of at Mills Health Center (in San Mateo). I felt nervous but the nurses were amazing. The anesthesiologist performed a nerve block which was extremely effective. Dr. Kim was able to perform the surgery arthroscopically, leaving just a few incisions in my skin. Pain management in the next few days was very reasonable; Advil and Tylenol were enough to do the trick. Eight weeks later I've had two check-ups and both X-Rays looked good and no longer have to wear a sling. I've started physical therapy (nearby in San Carlos, at Apex Physical Therapy). It will take a while to regain my range of motion, but there's no pain in my shoulder (unless I reach too far). I've noticed that they schedule a good number of patients at once on Dr. Kim's non-operating days so I've only seen him for a few minutes at these post-operation appointments, which I understand. He's been responsive to my messages in the Sutter Health phone app. All-in-all it hasn't been a terrible time to have the surgery (no commute, no trips, no driving the kids around). Given all the circumstances, I had an excellent experience with Dr. Kim. Hopefully I won't need to have him operate on me again, but I'm grateful for his work.

I took a stumble and came away with a mid foot injury which required surgery. I went to one…read moreorthopedist in San Francisco and left disappointed. I was seen for 5 minutes, told to pick which surgery I wanted via Internet research (was given the names of the procedures to look up but that was it), wasn't walked through the x-rays because the doc didn't review them before the appointment nor did he have time to pull them up and left with a walking boot emblazoned with the name of their practice on it -- I still had to pay for it. One set of pre-op paperwork even had the wrong foot listed on it. I figured a second opinion was in order since even though I have a back up foot, I kind of wanted both of them to be in working order. Sometimes you need to be your own advocate. I note all this because I was referred to Dr. Todd Kim and had a totally different experience. At the first visit he went over the injury in detail (with my X-rays and MRI pulled up), listed treatment options along with the pros and cons and his recommendations, took part in a Q&A and actually listened to and addressed my concerns. The choice was obvious so I broke up with the first doc and went with Dr. Kim. The surgery went without incident and every single follow on was treated in the same professional manner by not only Dr. Kim but his PA (Darryl), the nurses (especially Erica) and the pro who knew exactly how to slap on a cast (Jeremy). Scheduling was a breeze and when incidents I caused during rehab concerned me (like taking a dive off my knee scooter) I always received a call and/or email to ascertain whether I needed to come in. While the doc is your main contact and focus, do not forget about the staff support docs need to make things work. My hunch is that had I stayed with my first doc, I would have had lots of post-op frustrations. The only element I wish Palo Alto Medical and Dr. Kim had was in-house physical therapy. My East Coast orthopedics group had this and it was awesome. But other than this, which was not a big deal and was overcome by plentiful PT options nearby, there wasn't a thing I'd ask them to change. Dr. Kim and staff do not hustle for online reviews (unlike many businesses today) so that is probably why there are not many on Yelp. But do not let that deter you from at least considering his services. Oh, and Dr. Kim's walking boots were not walking billboards for their medical group. :-)
