This place has very unusual payment practices: 1. You have to have a valid credit card on file to be treated. And they ask you to sign an agreement allowing them to charge the card directly for any payment overdue for 60 days. If you have any dispute with them on the bill, good luck. They don't need your consent to charge you based on the agreement. 2. They refuse to delete your credit card info even if treatments are completed and paid for. I asked them if they could do so. They told me no. I walked away from this place after learning about the above practices. Now, after reading other reviews about their billing, I feel that I dodged a bullet. read more

As an avid tennis player, I was devastated by the severe plantar fasciitis pain in both of my feet. The pain had reached the point where I would have to stop playing the sport I love. From my very first visit, Dr. Metaxas carefully assessed my condition and recommended a custom shoe insert designed by his office. I honestly wasn't expecting such an immediate difference, but after wearing the inserts during an intense tennis match, I experienced virtually no foot pain. It was incredible! For the first time in a long while, I was able to focus on my game instead of every painful step. In addition, the entire staff was absolutely amazing. Everyone was warm, welcoming, and attentive, and they made me feel genuinely cared for from the moment I walked in. I visited Dr. Metaxas for a mild case of toenail fungus. The appointment lasted about 45 minutes, including time spent on intake and introductions. The doctor recommended a standard oral medication, and a brief nail trimming was performed by his assistant. My main concern was the cost and trust in accurate billing. The total cost came to almost $600 of which my insurance partly covered. I was charged for a 60+ minute doctors visit. He was only in the room for 15 minutes. I was charged a high fee for the nail trimming which insurance justifiably denied. This office billed this procedure as 'remove diseased toe nail bed or nail plate' and classified it as a surgery which involves numbing the toe and removing part of all of the toe nail bed. Debridement involves filing or grinding down the nail. Neither of these procedures were performed. The assistant simply performed a cosmetic trimming using a standard toe nail clipper to trim the tips of my nails and was complete in under 5 minutes. When I asked if the charge from the bill I received could be adjusted, I was told it is a standard flat fee regardless of time or extent of service. As patients we have rights. We have the right to ask for a Good Faith Estimate. We also have the right to self-advocate when we feel we are charged for procedures that may be incorrectly classified to our insurers that end up being denied resulting in out of pocket payment by us patients. After speaking to this office, there was no response to the classified procedure billed vs what procedure I actually received. I left this experience feeling not listened to, that this office prioritizes revenue and profits, and can longer trust this office with my medical needs. I spent a lot of money out of pocket and through insurance for someone to look at my toe nails, trim them with standard clippers, and prescribe pills that are standard treatment for nail fungus. I recommend you do your due diligence on this office before selecting your preferred podiatrist. Check Yelp for their recent reviews in addition to Google. As patients, we work hard to earn our money and deserve to have doctors available to us to provide a high standard of care and to bill appropriately for actual services performed. When questioned by patients, we expect doctor offices to listen to us when we self advocate and respond as necessary. It's good business practice. I felt that San Mateo Podiatry bent the truth in billing, didn't listen and respond when I questioned them, and lost my trust. They claim they are patient advocates. I have been going here to help my dad for the last 3 or more years. They are very much a for profit organization. That was ok, since my dad only went for getting his toes trimmed. They were too hard for my mom or caregiver. My mom also went in December and gave her the sBut they were really upselling. Both parents have terrible issues, my mom goes to dialysis 3x per week and my dad has late stage dementia. Today we arrived in the office, and this was the first time i had both. Their appointments were one after the other. When we arrived, They wanted to take both. I said no they have to be delayed like the times were there. I needed to take notes for both, one has dementia and the other need physical assistance. That is when i exploded. They already did his appointment without me. The caregiver said no to wait for daughter.His appointment was just to cut toes but i wanted to be there and they took that from me. we will not be returning to this office. No apology, nothing. I went today to get some new orthotics for my shoes since my old ones were 5 years old. I had been going to this group, seeing Dr. Bulkin for about 40 years, and before that, I took my mother to see Dr. Bulkin, and most of our church members also saw him, so I was expecting to have a great expereince. I even knew someone who works there who was a neighbor since she was a child, though she wasn't there today. Unfortunately, Dr. Bulkin has retired and Dr. Metaxis has taken over. Instead, I left there feeling humiliated angry and hurt. just had a horrible experience today with Dr. Metaxis. First, the office is now filled with lit up advertisements for miracle cures you can pay a lot of money for. The person taking me to my room asked me a lot of questions that didn't make much sense, such as "would my budget get in the way of my being able to do my part for my care". The questions didn't seem to apply to my getting orthotics, and were kind of annoying, since they didn't seem to apply to what I was doing there. They kind of felt like I was being set up for a con. When the doctor finally came in after a 45 minute wait, and I told him I wanted more orthotics, he started off telling me that they are way more expensive than they used to be and that Medicare doesn't cover them. I told him, I paid for them before and wasn't expecting them to be covered. I paid $300 for them in 2019. He said since covid happened the price has gone up, and it should be around $2000-$2500. He said he would need to use his 3-D imaging on me to get an updated diagnosis since it has been so long, and that was expensive. I told him that I'm on Social Security, and asked him to please not up-sell me on anything, and he seemed to be offended. He suggested I go to a cheap place that could mail me a box that would take an impression of my foot. I thought that didn't make sense since there would be no doctor's supervision. I asked him what the imaging did, and he said (angrily) "I'm a doctor and I need to make a diagnosis". Then he asked me about the questions the technician has asked me, and I told him that I found them annoying. At that point, he lost his temper and stood up and said, "That's it, we are not accepting you as a patient. Please leave". I really got the feeling that this guy is really full of himself, and I felt abused. It reminded me of interacting with a narcissist. When I got home I told my partner about the experience and he said, "You dodged a bullet. Good thing you got out of there. Who would want to work with him?" I feel sorry for my friend who has to work with this guy. And I get the feeling that he just dosen't want to have a patient who will question him, or tell him the truth about how they feel. DO NOT COME HERE. READ THE OTHER 1 STAR REVIEWS. Highly unethical place. I went in for what should have been a very simple in-grown toenail procedure and the doctor botched the small surgery. For some reason the doctor kept asking me to look at my bloody toe as he was performing the surgery, even though I was clearly trying to distract myself from the pain and blood of him cutting out my toenail. The doctor told me that it was highly likely that this surgery would be a permanent fix, however the exact same issue came back just a couple months later. In the meantime I had moved to a different state so I called into San Mateo Podiatry Group to simply ask if they had any podiatry reference for me in my new city. For some reason they basically forced me into setting up a video call for this. I waited on hold, spoke briefly with an assistant, waited on hold, and then spoke to a brand new doctor for literally about 1-2 minutes. He told me there was nothing to do, offered some strange "non-scientific / non-doctor idea" as he called it, and we ended the call. The assistant emailed me to tell me that I should just ask my insurance for a new podiatrist so basically there was no point at all to the call. For this ~2 minutes of time with a new doctor telling me "there's nothing I can do, ask your insurance" they decided to charge me $261.20 ($55 copay), LOL. The way that they respond to all of their other 1-star reviews shows what kind of shop this is. What an awful place. Well, damn. This Dr.'s appt. was surreal. I've been to dozens, hundreds (not hyperbole) of medical visits in my 61 yrs., and this one was beyond bomb! Less than 2 min. wait time, we were ushered in, with a mini tour, the place is spartan clean, sterile, snazzy, bells and whistles, not that I was looking for it. Shareen, the medical assistant, is on the ball, not phoning it in, kind, sweet, gracious, efficient, lively conversationalist, collecting pertinent info., and making it less mundane than it otherwise might've been. I get shown to the examining room, and no joke: Guess what? I'm besides myself, a kid were it not for my stupid foot, I'd be jumping up and down, because I got a gift, with my name in huge letters, sucker that I am for anything personalized, I'm a total child at heart! And yes, obviously I know all new patients get it and it's smart marketing business practice blah blah .. but do I give a crap? No, I do not give a rats ass, because I LOVE presents and gifts, especially when they're beautifully wrapped in tissue paper and gift bag ... is it a bird, a puppy ... no, it's a H2O bottle! Yay :-) Was I in a fancy schmancy hotel or spa or Dr.'s office? WTF was going on here? But I was along for the ride. It felt too good for anything else. While waiting for the Dr., we (my husband and I) were asked if we wanted anything to drink, and got water. Less than 5 min., later Dr. Wilhelm comes in, super chill and personable, does a thorough exam, identifies flat footedness, recommends a variety of footwear, stretches, and a referral to my existing PT. I was ready and willing to fork over for custom orthotics, but given I'm the farthest thing from an athlete, I never wear closed shoes and socks + just had spinal fusion surgery, that intervention would've been overkill and steroid injections not an option either, not that they do that as a first line intervention, which the conservative nature of this reassured me. I looooved this office: every single person in that place is incredibly attentive and present, e.g. it's a small thing but felt truly big to me--when we were leaving, the two receptionists at the front desk went out of their way to say goodbye. It's these gestures that bring humanity back to medicine. If ever I have a foot issue again, I'm 100% confident that I go back here in a heartbeat; I really liked and trust Dr. Wilhelm. Never mind that I use them relentlessly over 15 hours of the day, I take my feet for granted, unless something goes wrong. It's great to know I have a podiatrist. Though my visit was only a few days ago, I've been wearing my OOFOS slides and clogs, OMG I have been missing out, no socks necessary! And my plantar fasciitis pain is already significantly better! Holy shit! Ya know the movies 'Stepford Wives'? and 'RoboCop'? Minus the dark, ominous undertones + sprinkling of song, fairy dust, sun, glitter and rainbow, this office is the love child of both films :-) Precision, perfect execution, hitting it out of the park, slam dunk, home run, touchdown ... fill in with sports metaphor of your choice. All I have to say is just look at the way this business responds to their 1 and 2 star reviews to know whether or not you want to come here. I've never seen such public rudeness from a business, simply when patients give their honest feedback. (Image attached is their response to my Google review) Original Review: I would urge anyone reading this to pick a different podiatrist. I went to Dr. Metaxes for a badly sprained ankle in the beginning of 2021, and over the course of 3-4 months, and ~8 appointments, Dr. Metaxes never once touched my injured foot to check it's movement, pain level, flexibility, or anything! Not once! Plus sometimes I'd come in an he'd only talk to me for literally 60 seconds before saying he has another patient to get to. Most importantly, his medical advice was ridiculous. One week it was "don't ice it, it won't help" then the next week "ice the hell out it" then "absolutely no heat!" then the next week "heat will help it heal." My foot healed a maximum of 5% in the several months that I saw him, by following his advice. But once I started going to Physical Therapy (which he DIDN'T recommend I do, but I went anyway because I didn't trust him), my foot healed back to about 80% mobility in less than a month. Dr. Metaxes is a joke and if you're going to this office, ask to see someone else. Name on review changed for privacy (especially given the way this office responds to critical reviews). Didn't take my temperature or ask me any screening questions... There was more talking about the practice and the doctors rather than why I was there... It was a complete sales pitch to tell me that a CT scan is needed to diagnose my problem. I came in for an infected blister! They gave me a gift to welcome me to their practice. It's a water bottle with their practice name. I'm there to get help with an infected blister, I'm not there to join their practice and have foot surgery. Doesn't feel like a doctor's office at all but an awkward sales pitchy office to make money. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I need to give you some background first.... For years and years I've had a very common yet very stubborn type of Psoriasis on my feet. This was very irritable, slowly invasive, thick and scaly yet non-contagious (thank goodness) but also extremely stubborn! No matter what I did, no matter what skin/foot doctor tried to treat it, it just wouldn't go away! It was very unsightly, sometimes painful and also very uncomfortable in so many ways. I was almost at the point of giving up and just living with it. Then one day a friend of a friend referred me to Dr Metaxas and his practice. I set up an appointment and was able to see the Dr in a relatively short amount of time. When I entered the office I noticed the front desk staff was very attentive and super friendly. They gave me the typical insurance forms to fill out, I handed them back and was actually given a mini-tour of the practice and the new medical equipment they use. I thought that was a really nice and interesting way to welcome a new patient. We then proceeded to the room I was asked to wait in and after a brief time I got to meet Dr Metaxas. First impression, he was friendly, warm, personable but most important (to me) I could tell he knew exactly what he was talking about. He identified my foot condition, gave me a brief synopsis about it and then proceeded to give me his prescription. After my visit in the ensuing months I followed Dr Metaxas directive as he prescribed. As of this writing my feet are Completely back to normal. Completely. It took me a while (about 1 year) to write this review because there are times I cannot even believe after years and years of living with this condition, it is now completely gone. I came here to get a second opinion after feeling concerned that my last podiatrist wasn't taking my pain seriously. I'm so glad I found Dr. Metaxis, who, even in the midst of a busy day, took the time to answer my questions at length, and didn't rush me out of the office. I have a better understanding of my injury now, and the confidence that I'm following the right treatment path to healing. Also, a huge thank you to the office staff, who squeezed me in for a same-day appointment after hearing I was in acute pain. It's not easy to get a same-day appointment for any podiatrist -- even after suffering a broken bone. Thank you for prioritizing me, even though I could see you had many other patients. (I will always be patient in a podiatrist's office now, knowing there could be an emergency situation like mine.) And this will sound silly, but I am SO grateful for the unique ice packs and ace bandage with velcro that the doctor sent me home with. I'd tried to ice my foot before the appointment, but these particular versions were so much easier and more effective to use. This is a long overdue review... Please review the other one star ratings for this practice because the complaints all have a common denominator, poor medical ethical practice. In short, PATIENT BEWARE, otherwise you might unnecessarily pay out of pocket for a procedure or service that is normally covered by your in-network provider! I strongly encourage you to get a second opinion do not get distracted by the flashy technology, marketing gimmicks, office aesthetics, presentations, etc. I wanted to get bunion surgery and the provider said that bunion surgery is not covered by insurance but told me that I could file a claim with insurance afterwards if I wanted to. Since this was my first time getting surgery, I wasn't aware that providers are supposed to run the procedure codes with insurance to get an estimate of what's the patient's out of pocket for the deductible, coinsurance etc. (FYI - in network providers should do this). Fast forward after the procedure, I wanted to file a claim with insurance to see how much of the $5,995 I'd get back that I paid to him upfront. Long story short, the billing department was a headache to work with, they didn't provide the right provider ID number and couldn't share the appropriate CPT codes because apparently this surgery is "new" and there are no "CPT" codes to describe bunion surgery. Apparently, the provider is not even allowed to use these new codes because that is not compliant with the insurance agreement. The provider did not even educate me on the different options for bunion surgery so that I can run the cost-benefit analysis of the varying types of procedures I could do to address by bunions. He simply claimed that the procedure is not covered because it's elective, which is a completely false statement because I got my other foot done by another provider and it was covered by insurance. Whatever you do, don't sign a contract without a) getting a second opinion b) running it by insurance. read more

They just bought new fancy machine and it's doesn't cover by the insurance! Unbelievable! They also charged $50 copay for office visit. Stay away from this practice. The entire place felt fishy and like a scam. Their only interest was your pocket so that they can rip you (your insurance) off as much as they can. Just a few facts here for future reference: 1) At my arrival, the staff took me on a tour to show off how wonderful their CT equipment was. They said there was only one available in Northern California. Really? 2) They had a gift bag with a thermal water bottle waiting for me in the exam room. It just felt weird to receive a gift in a doctor office. I was suspicious from that moment on. 3) During my visit, I had to juggle between the exam room and the CT room. I saw at least 5 nurses standing around the hallway doing nothing (or chatting) in such a small place. 3) It was for a simple toe exam, but I received a large bill with 10 different charge items. 4) I called their billing number 3 times in different days and left multiple voice messages. Finally on the 3rd day, someone picked up the phone and was very rude answering my billing questions. I'm still dealing with the billing issue but I'm certainly not going back to this place. So think twice if this is the care and experience you want before you go. read more

When Dr. Google left me with more questions than answers, I turned to Dr. Bill Metaxas for some actual answers for some heel pain I have been having lately. Initially my symptoms presented as plantar fasciitis, but the position of the discomfort in my heel didn't really seem to be in the same spot that all of the images online were showing. Enter Dr. Bill. He was quickly able to disqualify plantar fasciitis and attributed my pain to a calcaneal stress fracture. He is a very well-mannered professional who has a jovial bedside manner, all of which are appreciated (it's never fun dealing with a snooty or tempermental care provider). The office is very clean and the staff are kind. While I hate to go to the doctor (don't we all), I honestly look forward to seeing Dr. Metaxas if the conditions call for it. Dr. Metaxas cares about your feet and will ensure you have all your questions answered. He's also good for a chuckle or two! Thanks for being a great place to take my feet! read more

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I was with my experience at the San Mateo podiatry group. The staff did everything to make me feel comfortable and welcome. Dr. Bulkin was very thorough and assured me through an x-ray that there was nothing wrong other than arthritis in my ankle. He gave me a shot on the spot. I can now walk and drive without any pain. Beware, they are x-ray happy in this office. They will order x-rays and procedures that are a complete waste of money. I have orthotics and foot boots that I do not need or use. Dr Bulkin's office is constantly double booked and run 45min - 1 hour late. I haven't been to the office in over a year and was hoping things were better, however they haven't changed. I was there today and after 30 minutes of waiting in the waiting room, I asked how much longer the wait would be? I knew there were at least 4 patients that were ahead of me, that still hadn't been seen! I was told it would be awhile. The rude receptionist insisted that they had NOT overbooked, that TWO emergencies had come in this morning. I do not buy it! This office has no concern for your time and continues to disrespect their patients. The front desk double books as a standard practice and I won't wait any longer. They will charge you a fee if you cancel within the 24 hour time frame. We should charge them for our wasted time sitting in the waiting room because of their DOUBLE BOOKINGS!. read more

I strongly discourage patronizing this place. I came in for soreness on the top of my foot. Without sharing with me that they would be taking a CT scan and x-rays of my foot, ankles and toes costing about $1500. I am surprised they did not take x-rays of my hands due to the soreness in my foot! This is a big scam. He diagnosed the issue as tendinitis which was later determined to be a misdiagnosis. He said the pain would disappear in 3-6 weeks. It did not. When I asked that a copy of my CT scan and x-rays be sent to another podiatrist, they said they would do so. I asked two employees if a release form needed to be signed and they said it was unnecessary. Four days later, my new podiatrist's office said they had not received the scan and x-rays so I called the office and they said I would need to come in personally to pick up the scan and x-rays on a flash drive without an apology for never having sent them. What office requires a patient to pick up reports, rather than sending them directly to the new provider? I told them I would be in the next day. When I came in, they said they could not give me a flash drive and they had hard copies of the x-rays for me. I complained that this was the only office that does not send the data directly to another provider's office. I received a call later that day, asking me to come in to meet with the other podiatrist in that office and he would give me the flash drive. I told them I saw no need to meet the other podiatrist and could they please send the scan data directly to the other podiatrist. Why should I waste my time when they could have provided the flash drive the first time??They said they would do so. I later received an e-mail with the data (that my new podiatrist could not open) from the other podiatrist in that office who said he could not send it directly to my new podiatrist because I had not remitted a release form. I told him two of his staff indicated that no release form was needed. They are incompetent and dishonest. Avoid them!!!! read more

I have seen dr Bill Metaxas DPM back o Aug 11 2020, and this review is long overdue, but I want to make sure patients know what they are walking into as soon as they step a foot in this place. Before the doctor showed up, It was a sales pitch, office tour, doctors background info/diploma and certification wall displays and water bottle gift chaired by 2 office nurses that no one really needed whe you are in pain and discomfort....I had a detached big toe nail and the doctor ordered his 2 nurses to take a picture of it for him to get familiarized with the issue I had. When the docor showed up he did not touch my foot or nail at all and prescribed me with an out of pocket $100 medication that my PPO insurance did not cover according to their statements. I paI'd for it hoping that it will help me since i was a very busy person and was juggling between my work, travel and home responsibilities. To be honest I did not have time to check back with my insurance for a coverage, so I can not comment on this at this time. This medication did not help me at all, and the worst was when I got the bill it was showing that I needed to pay another out of pocket $81.28 for a service that this doctor did not provide: 'debride nail" and "strapping of my toes". I was very upset for this mischarging and falsification of the services provided to me. I asked their office manager to provide me with the pictures during doctor services and or post doctor"s visit while i was still in their office. They had none to provide since I recall there were no pictures taken during that time. I was told by the doctor to cut my nail very short so I can get the medication under my nail, and I was scared and did not know how to do it and was thinking why am I here then if I have to do it all my own...They said that I should not worry and that I can do it...Anyway their office manager when I called her said that she trusts this doctor and their office billing department. She said that she has pictures of my toe from that day and that they cut my nail and strapped my toes, but when I requested to see these alleged pictures I received none. I am shocked till today that they will actually use someone else's pictures if needed to get money out of patients for the care that they did not provide..I told the office manager that I will continue to complaint, and she did not care. She said that i should pay, and this is the only way that this case will be resolved. I would caution, as others have expressed in the reviews, that you are very clear with the costs and confirm what is covered by your insurance before treatment. Many facets of Podiatry is not covered by insurance companies, but I was under the impression that the initial consultation I went in for would be drastically cheaper then what I was charged. I did not receive any medical attention, but rather an initial exam, at which I brought in my own set of x-rays for review. The exam, which was more akin to a consultation, did involve the doctor weighing options with me for about 20 mins. Almost a year later I received a bill in the mail for the initial exam for hundreds of dollars. They were unable to work out any additional adjustments to the amount owed. Just ensure you are diligent about the costs if that is a factor to you. read more
