What a taste treat for lunch! I had read about Island BBQ but never was able to stop in but today we did. It is in a small strip mall which makes it look like a small place but it is not. You walk into a small room where you go to the register and order/pay (they have a individual item section but most get buffet) then to the left it opens to a large room with a huge buffet section with several locations of hot dishes like-fried chicken, shepherd pie, mashed potatoes, gravy, great green beans, pinto beans, rice, coke slaw and more. Then it continues to the green salad part with two types of lettuces, onions, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, beets, chix salad, potatoes salad, olives, cucumber salad so much more. As though that was not enough the other side of this buffet island was country fried steak, taco bar with all the fixing, desserts-banana pudding, carrot cake...I'm sure I missed many other items too. All of this for $15! There is still another room that they had video games in; maybe they us for large parties? It's a small space, but big on local flavor- not exactly what you would expect to find next door to a PC repair shop. Or maybe it is. There was a small buffet, which was what most of the clientele who all seemed to be regulars were eating. They did have a menu, and it included several barbecue options, so I went for the pork sandwich and slaw. In the short time I waited for my food, I heard a lot of small talk about who was renting what apartment and whose kids were trying out for the baseball team- the kind of stuff average people talk about over a decent lunch on a Friday afternoon. Most patrons were not masked, but I got the feeling no one would be looked down on for wearing one either. My sandwich arrived piled high with mostly chopped pork, but there were some bigger pieces along with a good amount of seasoned edges included on a fresh roll. The one drawback was that it also included several pieces of cartilage that I had to spit out. The mustard sauce added some interest. The cole slaw was respectable. I was pleased to have found a good sandwich that seemed to be freshly prepared, even if the cleanliness of the place and preparation of the food weren't exactly professional grade. While it might not be worth a return visit, I found the unpretentious atmosphere to be just what I was looking for. If you're looking for laid-back, this is your spot. read more

If you have GPS and it tells you to turn left you still might miss this place. It sits in a non-discript strip mini shopping area with just the store lettering on the window. But....once you find it, you might not go to another BBQ joint. Pulled Pork Sandwich Wet,Messy,Big,Hot,Saucy,#Need2Hands2Hold,OMGood Now I do love NC BBQ and that is pulled pork with a vinegar base and its dry. This place makes theirs with a BBQ sauce which is really amazing, thus the saucyness. The sandwich was so big I could no pick it up. I picked French fries as my side, they serve crinkle cuts and those were hot and tasty also. Now this whole meal was super fabulous but here is my little complaint and I know I could have choose Cole slaw as my side, but I didn't. To me....any BBQ should just always come with slaw. Ate here for the first time. It was Friday, so they had a seafood buffet. Typical fried fish, fried shrimp, fried chicken. They had crab legs, but they were gone before we got there. Apparently the supply was very limited. The sides were good. I had the grits, Mac and cheese, tomatoes, and the broccoli salad was the bomb. I would probably go back just for that. The only drawback was, they only have one high chair and no booster seats. So we spent most of our meal tending with an 18 month old sitting in a regular chair trying to eat. Not much fun, but we made do as best we could. Great place for a good quick lunch, just not family friendly. read more

The Business is relatively small but it can easily accommodate 30-40 people. You can order off the menu or take advantage of a fantastic buffet. Today they had fried chicken, hamburger steak in gravy, greens, navy beans and rice, green beans, Mac and cheese, and a few other fresh veggies. Bread, biscuits and a salad bar along with 3 desserts. Your drink is also included in a very reasonable price of $ 15.00. And if you're worried about masks, don't come in here. The place had a lot of customers, none wearing masks because they were too busy eating and talking. Oh my God. I never thought a restaurant would scare me. The place was filthy. It looked like no one had even bothered to keep the buffet table clean nor add any food to it. Everything was dried out and overcooked no barbecue anywhere. The salad bar looked like somebody had vomited, and put it in pans. The waitress looked like she needed a fix. We went in, sat down and ordered a beer. After what we saw, we told the waitress that we're going to take off. She didn't seem surprised. $18 all you can eat more like $18 for all you could throw up. Normal this place is good but I got a rack of ribs from here and they were soured like they had been left out in the heat of something for too long. I couldn't eat them. I tried to call to let the restaurant know so I could bring them back but they had closed for the day and wouldn't be open again until Monday. I had to toss them by then. Sucks. It's my first time in the island and this place. Do not judge a book by its cover! From outside may not seem anything exciting or happening, but the place is spacious enough and cozy. They have a la carte menu and All You Can Eat Buffet included ice tea/ sodas. They have varieties of foods to choose from, such as Mac and cheese, grits, corn in the cobs or kernels, rice, sautéed shrimps, crispy shrimps, grill chicken and fried chicken which was delicious, juicy and crispy. I went for a second plate just for the crispy shrimps and the fried chicken, because they were so good. There's salad and dessert too. It's a perfect place if you want something quick, and delicious, especially warm grits during a chilly rainy day! My family of 5 was on vacation in Fernandina Beach over Thanksgiving break. On Thursday, there was only 8 restaurants open on the entire island. Everything was closed; grocery stores and convenience stores included. We were in a jam. We ventured in to Island BBQ for their Thanksgiving Buffett. BEST EVER!! The Turkey and ham were amazing; an astounding assortment of sides; all very fresh with tremendous flavor, and an incredible blueberry cobbler to die for. A la mode to boot. Just ok. We didn't like the baked beans or coleslaw but the green beans were good. Had pulled pork too, just ok.

I thought this place had gone out of business, but it turns out they just moved locations. The new location is exactly what you want in a BBQ joint, unassuming and basic. Money should be spent on the meat! I had the pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw and both were quite nice. The sandwich was served on a steamed bun with a healthy portion of meat and just the right amount of sauce dripping down the sides. The sauce is a bit more Carolina than KC, but not too heavy on the vinegar and mustard. It was a nice compliment to the smoke in the meat, which was tender with evidence of a good bark. The slaw was shredded super fine which gave it a melt-in-your-mouth quality. Overall, a good place to satisfy your craving for southern BBQ. read more

Stopped in this week to see about ordering for a group of 8 men coming to my house for a meeting. They were super friendly and helpful and took my order for pulled pork, smoked chicken, beans and slaw without any hesitation for next day service. The pulled pork is good, the brisket is good, the ribs were fine but didn't stand out to me. The red sauce for the beef is good. The orangey "Island sauce" is odd tasting and not the same as it was at the old location and I don't like it. And they sauce your meat without asking you so you would do better to ask for them specifically to not do that and to give it to you on the side instead so you can taste it first. I'm glad to have them back and to have another good barbecue option on the island. read more
