I can't say enough good things about Island Dog Obedience. We have a little pug named Gigi who we adore--but she definitely kept us on our toes. Running away, jumping, even pooping right in front of us... it got to the point where it just wasn't fun anymore. That's when we called Island Dog Obedience. Kristi was incredible from the start. She came to our home to meet Gigi, and soon after, Gigi was off to Kaneohe for training. It was hard being without her, and we wondered if anything would really change. Ryan was wonderful with our 6-month old rescue puppy Lilikoi (Ridgeback mix). She was comfortable during her board and train and learned a lot. Her social anxiety has reduced significantly, she's much more confident around other dogs, and the e-collar training has been working great. We have a 10 month old Siberian Husky named Reggie. She is definitely a challenging breed to work with for first time dog owners. 2 weeks boarding program made our life changed!! Before, our almost 3 years doodle, when she saw her favorite persons, she got so excited and jumping to the person. We had her other obedience training before but this has been hard to fix issue. Now she stops! 4 feet on ground! Also we got her strong recall and off leash training. She does very good! I love this company and the owner. We adopted a dog who was not trained at all or socialized and we tried to train him ourselves but it was stressful and rough. We finally decided to invest in the 2 week board and train. We were lucky enough to have Maria as the trainer. She's very professional and always puts safety first in addition to having a lot of experience in dog training. I am so grateful that I found Island Dog Obedience and for my amazing trainer Raya! My mom and I desperately needed our dogs to be properly trained because we could not leave them by themselves! Bella would bark for long periods of time when she knew someone wasn't home and had really bad separation anxiety. Bailey would constantly bark at people and other dogs. I was so amazed at how accommodating she was! She was willing to drive at the way to kaimuki to help train my dogs from the comfort of my own home! It was so convenient especially since I didn't have the transportation to get there and wasn't able to drive at the time. Bella and Bailey were really scared at first and kept barking because they don't interact with much people outside. My trainer immediately could see what my problem was and made sure to start with teaching me how to get them to stop barking. These e collars are so helpful till this day! I was initially worried that it would hurt the dog because it looked like a shock collar, but you can adjust the vibration. Raya was such a big help on getting my dogs exposed to more places, people, etc. I was concerned they were gonna bark a lot, but they didn't. They were so good! It was such a huge change. They both eventually loved my trainer They're also doing so much better at listening to my commands, getting used to their "place" and their kennels! We did the 2 week board and train with Kristi. Bruiser is 3.5 years old. He is a stubborn Frenchie and had been having some issues with resource guarding at home and reactivity with other dogs. Kristi was very communicative throughout his stay and updated me with pictures and videos on what he was learning. He came home one week ago a different dog (but still same sweet personality)! He is much better at listening and following commands. He doesn't exhibit resource guarding at home anymore. We are still working some on the reactivity but he is definitely improving. This is a late review post, but nonetheless, I only have great things to say about this program. The process was straightforward and smooth from the moment we spoke with Maria to picking up my FIL dog Yuki from Ryan. So let's get into the meat of this review. Yuki is (or was) a 6 month Border Collie/Aussie mix when we first signed up for this program. So you can already imagine the energy, size, and intelligence of this dog. Although Yuki is a naturally loving dog, he was very curious about the world around him and so he would pull, bark, and of course, test his boundaries. We did all of the simple training classes and even online recommendations, but nothing worked. His high energy and amazing vocal skills were too much for my FIL to handle. We had a consultation with Ryan to get his perspective on training Yuki. Ryan immediately bonded with Yuki and recognized his abilities and listened to the concerns of my FIL. He explained what would happen during the boot camp and the realistic expectations we could see from this 2 week stay. He also explained their methods in training and we were really happy with his clear explanations. We set up the date and so began Yuki's boot camp. Ryan would message us every day with details of how Yuki was doing, both good and bad. He also added pics and videos to show us what he was doing with Yuki. Each video and explanation gave us hope for a new Yuki. Just seeing these videos really showed how much Ryan cared as we saw a big change every day. You could tell that even Yuki was happy bring with Ryan. On the day of graduation, Ryan took the time to explain what he did to train Yuki and to be aware that Yuki would test my FIL when we bring him home. My FIL practiced with Ryan on how to teach and correct Yuki's bad behaviors. I think this practice time was so important as Ryan made suggestion on how my FIL should be holding the leash, how to respond to Yuki, and basically training my FIL to be consistent with the boot camp methods. As Ryan stated, Yuki tested my FIL the moment they got home. However, having Ryan's words fresh in his mind, he was able to practice what he learned. It's been about 3 weeks now since we brought Yuki home and Yuki has changed for thr better. Although he still fights for control and has a lot of energy, Yuki is about to show some sense of control in his actions and has been showing less signs of separation anxiety, which is wonderful. Definitely call this company up and try out their bootcamp. The price is reasonable with a lot of other agencies on island and if you get Ryan, definitely be ready for a patient, observant, dog loving guy to coach your dog. We're so happy we enrolled our puppies with Island Dog Obedience! Having never had two puppies at the same time, we were overwhelmed to say the least. We initially had a consultation with trainer Chi. She was terrific with our puppies and very reassuring. She gave us some very useful tips for working with them until they were old enough to do the full board and train. Our puppies are rambunctious, as all puppies are, and needed to learn good behavior in the house and how to be with one another without rough housing. They also needed to learn how to heel, sit, and place. While Chi was not available for board and train, she connected us with trainer Ryan. Immediately we could see that Ryan was going to be very good with the puppies. They took to him quickly and although we were nervous about not seeing them for two weeks, we felt they were in good hands. We received daily videos, pictures, and reports on how our puppies were doing. From the start they were learning good behaviors. We enjoyed hearing how the puppies showed their individual personalities and how they trusted Ryan. When we picked up the puppies, Ryan spent time with us to go through what they learned. He also ran us through some drills to make sure we reinforced what they learned, encouraging us not to let the puppies get away with things or try to revert to old behaviors. The puppies have been great since they returned home. We enjoy having them both in the house without worrying that they will destroy everything in their paths. They listen (for the most part - they are still puppies and are testing their boundaries). We are so happy that we connected with Island Dog Obedience. Maria, the owner, is great and Ryan is wonderful. We plan to board our pups with Ryan when we travel. We know they will enjoy being with him again. We highly recommend Island Dog Obedience. My husband and I have two handsome mini Goldendoodles--Leo, who is almost 4, and Levi, who just turned one. After his two week training Hoku was doing so well....until he was rushed by a big off-leash dog. It didn't help that the owner didn't bother to call his dog! After that Hoku would bark and lunge every time he saw another dog. He'd bark and charge the tv when there was a dog. We met with Raya to see if she could help. At the one hour training she had him greeting and walking next to other dogs and lying on a cot next to another dog. He also stopped barking at the dogs on tv, he'd just watch. I thought that was amazing since she didn't even work on that! I can now take Hoku on walks without him barking at other dogs. We can even go back to taking him on walks at the mall. No more stress! I can't say enough about Raya....she's awesome! read more

Raya was really straightforward about what to expect and kept me updated every day. Our puppy is so small (teacup maltipoo - 2.5lbs) that they couldn't use an e collar. They used positive training instead and it worked really well. Billie came back with so much more discipline and ready to please us. She definitely tested us a bit but Raya prepared us for that in advance and communicated with us about how to react. Training doesn't produce a perfectly obedient pet - the process teaches your pet how to learn and the owners how to help their pet learn to be in their space. We are so much happier knowing how to help her and teach her to be a good girl. We are so grateful that we sent our 8-month old Goldendoodle, Koda to island dog obedience! Of course we were hesitant to send our first born baby away for two weeks, but Maria and Raya were excellent communicators. They would send us photos/videos everyday, told us how she was doing in her training, and was always available to answer questions before, during, and post-training. Koda struggled with listening to commands, recall, distractions, eating EVERYTHING, and biting to name a few. After the second day, I could already see a change in her! Warning... long winded review, which I feel is necessary to convey my wonderful experience... I have 3 other dogs and recently added a sweet Golden Retriever pup (Bailee) to our pack. I have a 3 year old German Shepherd which I trained with the help of a trainer when she was a pup. Unfortunately he has since moved away, which prompted me to seek out an alternative and through a Google search, came across Island Dog Obedience. I was doing very well with training Bailee with her basic sit/stay/down commands. Once all of her vaccines were up to date I started leash walking her around the neighborhood. Unfortunately one evening as we walked by our park, a loud vehicle passed us and there was a popping noise which scared Bailee causing her to pull me all the way home. From that evening on, Bailee had associated the park with a scary place and did not like being there. In the last few weeks I attempted to desensitize her by just driving there and sitting in the grass with her letting her sniff and try to relax. Each time this poor pup's tail was between her legs and she just wanted to get back into the car and go home. As mentioned earlier, I Google searched dog obedience companies and called Island Dog Obedience. I left a message and was contacted via text and filled out a basic questionnaire. I was immediately put in contact with Senior Dog Trainer Kristi. Kristi called me and we scheduled a meeting at the very park that Bailee was fearful of. I asked if a friend and her 3 year old Golden Retriever could join us and Kristi agreed, adding that this would be a great distraction for Bailee, and would aid her during training. Today, Feb. 14, 2024 we met Kristi at the park. I immediately noticed that Bailee was excited as Kristi approached us and even had her tail wagging! This was amazing! Bailee was already wearing her prong collar and Kristi showed me how to walk her nicely while heeling by my side. Kristi worked with my friend and her dog, and in that short one hour period we were amazed at how great our dogs were doing. It even rained with some loud thunder but the pups kept their focus on Kristi and us and we learned so much together. We adopted Biggie from the human society who was found in a shoe box and only a couple of days old. When she started teething she became very unruly and started to jump on us all the time. We have a 7 month old puppy that is known to be an independent breed and had to travel, so we found Island Dog Obedience on Yelp and signed up for the 2-week board and train with Ryan. It was nice to get photos and videos showing our pup's progress and seeing what they were working on together while we were away. Getting our pup back, there was a night and day difference! Ryan really emphasized that we would have to follow through the first few weeks having him back, and while there's still a long way to go with our pup, Ryan really helped us build a great foundation. We will be doing follow up sessions with Ryan and hope to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test in the future! :) read more

Our 11-month old Bernedoodle, Bennett, recently graduated the 2-week board&train program with Island Dog Obedience and we are blown away by the results! We inquired about the board&train program earlier this year. Maria reached out to us quickly and provided us with all the information we needed to feel confident with the program. After the initial call, we got in contact with one of their trainers, Ryan, who was extremely helpful in passing along additional information. Raya was Bennett's trainer for the 2 weeks. She is a fantastic communicator, and when we met her for the initial consultation, she guided us through their training process and gave us peace-of-mind. During the program, Raya sent us daily updates that included videos, pictures, and a description of that day's training. These updates quickly became the highlight of our day. It was amazing to see his progress, and we could tell Bennett was getting comfortable with his surroundings where ever they went. When we went to pick Bennett up, Raya walked us through off-leash training that we could work on with Bennett and conducted the IDO graduation ceremony (that includes a stylish bandana). In just a short time, Raya established a great relationship with Bennett, and we feel lucky to have her as his trainer and friend. Prior to this program, Bennett was a rambunctious puppy, who wouldn't listen from time to time. After training with Raya, Bennett is much more relaxed and obedient, and he's kept his same loving energy and playfulness. When we go out, his attention is on us, which made us realize the benefit of continuing his training, but more importantly, our training as dog-parents. Our only regret in all of this, is that we didn't enroll in the board&train program sooner. Thank you to Raya, Maria, Ryan, and the rest of the team at Island Dog Obedience. Kristi at Island Dog Obedience went above and beyond to help our dog Shadow during his board and train. Shadow is a very shy dog and took longer than normal to warm up and get used to his new environment. Because of this, he was behind the normal training speed, but Kristi was able to work hard with him so that he could catch up. He went from knowing no commands to being able to heel, come, sit, and place, to name a few. Shadow also had separation anxiety and Kristi helped lay the groundwork and taught us how to continue to teach him that he can be calm by himself. We looked into many different options for our dog and was so happy to come across island dog obedience! We decided to go with the two week board and train with Maria. The experience and end results were even better than expected. Before dropping our dog off she was awful on the leash, had a bad habit of chasing chickens, and loved to jump on people. With two small children in our household we needed the right person to help train her into our dream family dog and Maria did just that! She was extremely professional. She took time to meet with us and talk about our expectations. Once we dropped our dog off we received video/photos every single day and she was able to answer all of our questions within a timely manner. Our doodle puppy was doing great with training when at home, but she's not very food motivated, so when we went places with distractions, I had no leverage. She cared nothing for the treats and I didn't know how to get her attention and train the behavior I wanted. So I reached out to Island Dog Obedience for help. In all honesty, I was very, very hesitant about the e-collar at first. However after meeting with Maria, learning more about it (modern e-collars work similarly to TENS machines they use in physical therapy), and trying it on myself, I decided to go for it. Maria and her team are wonderful trainers and they worked their magic with our pup! During the 2-week board & train, I got photos and videos every day with updates. She went on adventures every day, stayed in the trainer's house, and I felt comfortable knowing that she was being cared for like part of the family. At pickup, Maria gave me a tutorial on training techniques and tips on places to go to continue off-leash training. Our pup came back to us with her same sweet personality, but now with wonderful manners! No more jumping, reactivity to dogs is much less, leash walking is good, and she's even great off leash. She did try to slip back into her old ways at first, but she very quickly realized the new rules apply everywhere. You do still have to continue the training after they come home, but it's practicing a behavior they already know as opposed to teaching a new one, so it goes much more smoothly and quickly. I can't recommend Island Dog Obedience highly enough! We're a loyal client, we boarded her when we traveled, and our second pup will be going for her B&T in a couple of months! Make the investment into your pup's training, it will be worth it. read more

When we first brought Kala to Maria and her team at Island Dog Obedience, he was a sweet, 9 month old, 85 pound, HYPER puppy who didn't know his size and strength. He pulled when we took him walking (he is extremely strong and can be stubborn at times), he chased after birds and our cat, and he would jump up to greet people almost knocking them over. He wasn't vicious by any means, but he was overly playful and could easily hurt someone or get hurt because of his personality and size. When we would take him places, people would ask to pet him or even take pictures with him, and it made us so nervous. It was stressful trying to prevent him from accidentally knocking someone over. Because of his size, people don't realize when they see him, that he's still very much a puppy! We knew that at 9 months and still growing, we needed to take control of things ASAP. We researched for awhile and decided to call Maria. In just 2 weeks, Maria and her team worked their miracle. They taught Kala to heel properly, which has made our walks so much more enjoyable (he doesn't try to drag us lol). We can take him pretty much anywhere now. They taught him to Place, which allows us to stay in control in many situations. They had him practice greeting people in different surroundings from parks, parking lots, stores, home when people come to the door etc. They even went so far as to take him out to where cats were (since they don't own a cat) so he could practice "not chasing them". They sent us pictures and videos daily of his progress during his sessions. We looked forward to receiving updates from them every single day. They never skipped a beat. In summary, my husband and I are so very thankful for Maria and her team, and we know we made the right decisions choosing them. They took care of our baby, and taught him so much, and they taught us a lot too. The difference is like night and day! We continue to practice with him daily, remembering everything Maria told us. Kala is a happy puppy. He knows his commands. No more playing tug of war with him and being afraid of losing. *If you are looking for a good trainer for you dog, we HIGHLY recommend Maria and her team! I had a great experience doing a 2-week board and train for our dog, Bailey. I really appreciated the daily updates and could tell Bailey was happy, relaxed, and having a great time!
