Thankfully, McDonough's Market carries pretty much everything you could need throughout your stay. Located about a half hour from the main downtown (the ferry dock and community center), it's an easy walk or bike ride over to pick up what you may need. My recent stay was short, so I didn't have to pick up too much. After a 10 mile bike ride, though, only a chilled Gatorade would hit the spot. There was a large variety of flavors of Gatorade, as well as some Vitamin Water, chilling in one of the refrigerators, and I happily availed myself of one. On a separate trip that same visit, I wanted to find some local coffee to take back as a gift for a coffee connoisseur. The bag that I needed was hiding in plain sight, and I missed it on my first go-around. I asked a friendly employee to help me find it, which she did without delay. There's a great welcoming and friendly vibe on the island that was apparent when I was browsing throughout the store, which made it a pleasure to pop in that day. Employees were friendly and very helpful to the point at the checkout the sacker spoke up about a special price on 3 boxes of Chex cereal as my mother in law was making the second batch of Chex Mix. Everything we needed was there - though she was looking for Chocolate Orange and they didn't have any. So close to Christmas the place was packed though and it was difficult to navigate. Given how much snowfall there was the parking lot was in need of another scraping. And also given how far north it is and the amount of snow St Ignace receives I think they should have a longer entry area to make sure snow covered boots can be shed of the snow instead of making the whole store's floor slick and wet as you walk and it melts off.

Doud's is a small market, but it has lots of stuff. As far as I know, this is one of the only markets on Mackinac Island. There actually is another Doud's down Main Street toward the ferry area, but it's a smaller grab-and-go convenience store, mostly with snacks and coffee. My hotel was right across the street, so I bopped into Doud's a couple of times during my stay, to grab a bottle of wine (they have a decent selection of wine), some candy for my kids, and some fruit because I needed to eat something fresh. The store is tidy and everything is arranged nicely. They also have self-checkout kiosks, so you can get in and out quickly.

I was hoping for a decent shopping experience when we recently stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, but was extremely underwhelmed. Upon walking in, the market seems outdated and not the cleanest... My family was antsy to get to our destination after a four hour drive, so we were hoping for a quick grocery run, but it was far from quick. They have the basics but not all of the products / brands we were looking for... We added some beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to our cart, as well as some snacks and went to check out. We chose the shortest line, put our items on the conveyer belt and then were told that the register could not take credit card - only cash or check. Annoying but my husband was willing to pay with cash, so we stayed in that line vs. finding another line to wait in. When it was our turn, we were then told that they were going to reboot the register and that we should move to another lane. We did that and then when I went to pay and showed my license, they had an issue with entering that information, so it literally took another 10 minutes to figure that out. I felt bad for the employee working the register as it was not her fault, clearly, but it was not a good customer experience shopping here. Needless to say, if you have options to shop for your groceries elsewhere, I would advise doing so.
