Would love to shop "local" (this is about 40 minutes), but will be traveling over an hour and 30 minutes to shop. Prices are outrageous and quality is horrendous. Not a single bread without seed oils (Even in the bakery). Trying to find real food that is seed oil free is impossible. No options for grain free or dairy free... not a polysorbate 80 free pickle or pickles that don't glow in the dark (yellow dye). I could maybe justify their prices if the food was actually edible, but I spend much less on actual edible food through Thrive Market or even Walmart has edible pickles and Primal brand salad dressing. read more

We found this little grocery store when we stopped In Manistique for a night last summer. We were planning to go see Kitch-iti-kipi and this grocery store was right down the road from our motel, so we stopped in to grab some lunch supplies and found some of the most amazing, fresh, made-in-house pasties. When in Michigan, you must eat pasties, but we'd been scared by past ones that had proved dry or with the wrong crust-filling ratio...not so with the pasties at Jack's!! These are fresh, warm, with a thin, buttery crust that's crunchy on the edges and soft in the middle, and so many delicious fillings - traditional beef and potato, beef/potato/rutabaga, plus crazy daily specials like cheeseburger and pizza. This is also a lovely, clean, well-stocked grocery store. Great selection. They surprised me by even having one random thing on my list - natural insect repellent for my kids. We go out of our way now to stop through Manistique on our trips through the U.P. and get pasties from here - thanks, Jack's!! Such a fun tradition! read more

This store should be called Jack's Fresh Market if you use the produce the same day! I'm so sick of getting bad produce from this place! In the last week I have thrown away a cantaloupe, 2 avocados, and 4 apples that were $8! No wonder people go else where. I'm tired of spending our money on garbage! Get it together! Get some "Fresh" produce and stop giving us the stuff from your Wisconsin store! The locals deserve better! Been here 20 years and it's always the same! The name of this place should be "prices are jacked" way up! Prices are higher here in Manistique because it's the only grocery store in town. My heart goes out to all of the elderly, retired people on fixed incomes that have no choice but to shop here and be gouged. read more

This is an update of my previous review. I am lowering my rating to 4 stars due to experiencing the same problem consistently......being mischarged for multiple items! Today we had three sale items ring up at the regular price, one regular priced item come up incorrectly, and a produce item identified wrong. To their credit, Jack's gave us the overcharge back when we took in the receipt. You shouldn't have to scrutinize your receipt and argue to be charged correctly. We stopped for groceries on our UP adventure but also had heard they had great pasties. We heard right!!! They have a "hot cart" loaded with several varieties of pasties (which vary throughout the week). My husband and son had the cheeseburger pasty (heresy!), and I had the traditional (rutabaga and all). They were hot, tasty, stuffed full, and the pastry was perfect. We bought three more to take back to the camper. They are gone now, and I am sad! read more

I'm torn about this review. It's a great grocery store basically. They have nice options and hope they get better at it - some better up-to-date brands and options for people that have dairy allergies, or are vegetarians/vegans. Awesome, as many in the UP besides Meijer don't have anything at all. Jacks prices are ridiculous on many items, not sure why locals put up with it - tourists don't have a lot of option and deal with it. But, rude to locals to be so high year round - selfish owner. Kraft Parm Cheese over $6.00 -LMAO WTF! The deli is great to grab a bite to eat. Not a ton of healthy options or higher grade food, but they still taste good. Would love to see more organic options, very few in produce, none I could find in meat, etc. And, a produce item purchased had a label under the current one, showing it was a day older and a better price, but then a new sticker over that one said it was current from that day and the price was higher. ugh, paid more for day old produce and with a lie! This store is similar to a Family Fare or D&W, if you are familiar with those. It's a great store that has lots more potential with option and yet their prices could be lowered and they would still make a ton of money but seems they are greedy. Tourists will love this store - they will be in heaven for options here vs other towns. TG Meijer is only one hour away for BIG shopping. I'd rather spend the money on gas vs Highway Robbery on prices for the product, which can be adjusted if they chose to. read more

This is purely a pasty review. Can't believe one of the previous reviews gave 4 stars because there is no gravy offered. Let's be real, these things don't need gravy. Pick one up, go to the boardwalk that's a couple minutes away and enjoy the pasty and view at the same time. Maybe there are better pasties (not better prices), but for a grocery store, these are pretty dang good and need to get more respect, at least The Pasty Guy thinks so. Jack's has a great meat counter (remarkable even), wonderfully prepared deli items, big selection of fresh produce, beer, liquor, and is a beautifully stocked, very clean store with friendly employees. Have purchased sparkling water, store brands. Charged the $0.10 deposit on each can. Now trying to return for my refund and can't. Supposedly their vendor is only putting in the codes for the cans a few at a time. Spoke with a manager, requesting they refund my $, and then when there vendor gets up to speed they can feed the cans into their machine. Nope not gonna do it (Mgr) Suggested they contact their vendor and get these brands entered. Nope not gonna do it (Mgr) Asked for the Vendor information so I could call them. Nope not gonna do it (Mgr) I asked if I could speak to someone else, and I was summarily dismissed with, "we're done here". Since I don't live here, and these brands are not sold where I live, I'm pretty disappointed in the complete lack of CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

This is a very nice store, prices are as expected in a summer Michigan tourist area . Got some very nice meat ready to grill and some great looking pork chops. The water by the gallon reasonable. We camped at Indian Lake state park for 3 days and this was the local grocery store that were came to. It was by far one of the cleanest grocery stores I've ever been in. As soon as I walked in it very br guy and welcoming, all the fresh fruit and veggies lit up the entrance. The store was huge and had everything I need plus so much more! There was a bakery making fresh donuts and of course pasties- we'll get back to that topic in a minute. There was hot fresh food coming from the ready food section- chicken tender and Tyson chicken nuggets were a few things we purchased on a rain day since we couldn't have a fire to cook. Both items were very tasty and tasted just like restaurant quality. The nuggets were 20 for $2.49, tenders were on sale for $3.49 which gave us 8 huge pieces for under $5. They also had a cafe which severs hot and cold drinks and made to order sandwiches, wraps and salads. The whole area is really amazing. The rest of the grocery store is well organized, clean and well stocked. All 3 times I came in they had what I needed and either on sale or at a comparable price to what I'd pay back home. I was afraid I'd be paying jacked up prices since I was in the UP, but that wasn't the case at all. Jacks had great everyday prices and even better sales. They have a full line liquor, beer, wine, lotto and a ATM located near the entrance. The employees were all super friendly and I even filled out a comment card and mentioned so. Ok. The pasties. We're amazing! Now, I'm no pasty expert, but I did buy 6 of them, 2 of which were eaten the same day in seconds flat. The other 4 were put in our travel trailer freezer and traveled 600+ miles back home. I defrosted them in the fridge and reheated them. They were still one of the most delicious foods ever! I bought the beef and potato (which they have daily) and the chunky chicken (which is a Wednesday/Saturday special only). I loved them both, as did my family. If you're in the area it worth the stop to grab some made fresh daily pasties from Jacks. And at $3.79 each- it's the best price you will find. Jack is 2 big thumbs UP!!! read more

Normally, our yearly trips to the U.P. are met with spending tons of money at local general stores for food and alcohol. When we went to Tahquamenon last year, I spent $6 on a pack of hot dogs and $14 on a 12-pack of Budweiser. When we stayed at Indian Lake State Park, we passed by this place, and I was very surprised to see what I considered a normal grocery store. It's comparable to a Meijer or Kroger, and Jack's was incredibly clean and organized. Some of their sale prices were pretty damn good, but their common merchandise was kind of expensive. It was $5 for a box of cereal if it wasn't on sale, but the steaks we bought were on sale for a very reasonable price. We made it in and out spending about $50 on a steaks, chips, camping supplies, beer, and breakfast. read more

Read about Jack's online while planning an overnight in town. I ran in to get something for dinner and breakfast. Came out with a chunky chicken pasty, skim milk, chocolate torte which is sold by the pound, Chobani yogurt and a 50 cent loaf of day old bread that will make good French toast later this week, all for $8.40. The bakery is amazing and they actually have an in store cafe. Great store! read more

We live in the eastern U.P. and have driven right past this store a few times. Going through Manistique again today and decided to stop in after seeing they had an in-store cafe. First impression was "Wow, people shopping in the larger metro areas have got nothing on this place." Made my way over to the cafe and got a large cappacino and a donut for $2.75 (try that in Wisconsin). We walked around the store to see what else they had. Real butchers working the meat counter means you can get custom cuts (coming back for jerky supplies). Deli counter was equally impressive. If you like variety when it come to beer you'll have a difficult time choosing from all the available brands. I told me wife on the way out to the car that I would consider moving here; there's nothing like this around where we live. read more

This market has a great selection of just about everything, and is clean and beautifully laid out inside. I also bought Baroni´s canned Ravioli and Spaghetti Sauce (the best canned food you can get, with lots of real meat inside both). I also stocked up on Old Dutch chips and tortilla chips, and bought some U.P. Jam made in Baraga that I had never seen before. They had stuff from all over U.P., and all over the world. read more

What a nifty place; clean floors, attractively displayed produce and the smells coming from their deli make the mouth water. We bought chicken/cran/cherry/nut wraps for our pictured rocks tour for later in the day. The deli person said it was their best seller and I can see why. They were excellent. They had an enormous amount of made-up food to choose from. On our way out to the cashier, we passed a cooler with locally made smoked garlic and onion sausage. Of course we had to buy a length (almost as long as a baseball bat). And boy was it tasty. Good thing we're trolls (we live under the bridge) as it would be hard to pass up cream cheese bismarks. Jack's really did it in style with this new store. The deli is the best place in town for lunch! Great coffees made to order when you first walk in the store. They even have a nice selection of gluten free products. Only complaint is the prices are high all around -- you need to plan your menus according to his sale flyer each week. read more

OMG!!!! We recently moved from down state to the Gladstone area. Have drove by this store many times to go downstate and have never stopped. Stopped in to check out and OH MY I loved the store as soon as I walked in. I was a girl on a mission----- wanting some "cukes" that weren't frozen. I have thrown so many out since moving to the UP.
