When I had a cracked and ultimately crumbling molar, I was quickly scheduled for a visit with Dr. Atienza, who performed several complicated procedures involving three posts, temporary and permanent crowns, virtually no pain, and finally, a restored and perfect tooth. The Dr. does nothing for making new dentures. The dental assistants do all the scanning and altering of the denture work. These dental assistants have "on the job" training with no professional education. When calling this practice, there is an answering machine that takes your information. You must then wait for someone to call you back. This happens even during working hours. The quality of care is extremely poor. The office is grossly disorganized with long waits once you arrive for your appointment. This practice is driven by money, not patient care.

When I arrived, I provided my insurance card at the front desk. I saw the dentist that day for an exam, then made an appointment with a hygienist for the next day. The appointments went well and I had good experiences with the providers themselves, but the billing process was frustrating. First, they did not tell me at any time that they don't actually accept my insurance, and at the end of my first visits they said they would get back to me about the copays I owed after they sent the info to my insurance. In the meantime, I scheduled and completed a treatment plan with the dentist for a few fillings that needed to be done. Later I received a bill for the full charge of the new patient exam instead of giving me the advertised $79 rate, so I paid a few hundred for that. Then, I had to pay in full for the dental work. So ultimately I ended up spending a couple thousand dollars on dental work at a practice I can't even go back to because they don't accept my insurance.

Finding a new dentist is always stressful. But I got lucky, because after my first visit to Portland Smiles I knew I had found my new dentist's office. From the moment I called to make my first appointment, Judy was very accommodating and welcoming. She gave me an appointment a month out, but then texted me when they had a cancellation in case I wanted to go earlier. I loved that! I also loved how organized this office is. I was able to submit all the new-patient forms online prior to my appointment, and that saved me so much time. I can't say enough awesome things about Alicia, the best hygienist I've met. She was so caring, welcoming, and thoughtful. We had the best conversations together, it truly felt like I was making a new friend. She's hilarious and amazing at her job. They are absolutely amazing, upfront, willing work with me. I've had multiple fillings, a crown (still need more) and they have been friendly, courteous, and professional. Dr. Buss and Megan are absolutely amazing, Judy and Shanna are informative and break everything down and explain billing and insurance clearly. I used to get very anxious over going to the Dentist, but not with the amazing staff at Portland Smiles. They hygienists are amazing and the cleaning great, I just can't remember their names sadly. So, I expected the worst when I arrived at my appointment such as needing several root canals, cavities​, severe gum disease, whole mouth replacement, etc. I was ready to hear that I needed to undergo extensive dental work to make up for my negligence. However, everyone was SO nice and Dr. Homicz is a lovely man who immediately picked up on my apprehension, which is a sign of a great healer. He explained that he was going to check everything out and make some recommendations, with the help of Kendra, his assistant. He looked around very gently, rattled off some dentalese to Kendra, had his x-ray​ tech Jenna take some pics and then recommended a deep cleaning but assured me we could approach at my comfort level, whether it be a little now, a little in a few months, maybe numbing perhaps? I went with Colleen for a cleaning and she could also sense my fear and said she'd go easy. As she worked on my teeth, I was pleasantly surprised how it didn't hurt, my jaw didn't ache, and my gums were not in shooting pain. She later said she didn't go easy on me and thought all I needed was to just show up again in 6 months. SERIOUSLY?!?? This was not at all expected, so I was thrilled. I am a big baby when it comes to sharp objects and the staff at High Tide Dental made me feel comfortable, which is not easy to do. So, if you're like me, scared to go to the dentist, you'll be in good hands here. And if you're just looking for a new dentist, this is a great option. My appointment was a month and a half out on the day I was supposed to come in. I said I had to reschedule because my back was still really hurting and I didn't think I could sit in the chair. They told me it would be a $75 rescheduling fee which is absolutely crazy nor did I know anything about this fee people should not be penalized because life events. I also have MS which I had also told them which had nothing to do with this particular circumstance. But if there was a chance that I had a flare up and I couldn't make it, did that mean every time I was going to be charged $75 I could see $25. I could see something reasonable but 75 just seems so greedy. So to say the least I did not go. I exchanged a few emails with the dentist himself but he had no empathy or compassion, whatsoever
