Island Surf & Sport is essentially two different stores in one. You got the surf shop down bottom and the clothing store up top. The store up top you can find a solid selection and variety from the latest surf and outdoor brands with in-season clothes as well as some of previous seasons items on sale. The Board Room down below you can find a vast choosing of the latest and greatest from shapers and boardmakers. In addition they offer a surf camp and private lessons to those trying to get started. Every time I visit I have found the people working to be helpful and willing to engage in a conversation about what I am looking for or helping me find the right fin for my board. It is important to buy local when shopping for a new board, wetsuit, or leash so the surfing community can continue in areas like Newport/Middletown. read more

I parked my car and walked around the side to the store and got yelled at by an employee that he was going to tow my car in 5 minutes if I didn't move, just assuming I was there for the race and not the store. Having owned a small business I know how important it is to engage with you our customers. I was optimistic when the guy at the cashier booth said hello when I walked in. Asked where the paddles for a SUP was and he said go down back and there is someone to help you with them. Asked the person where they were and he pointed and said over there. Never came over to help but almost jumped off his stool when a family from St. George's walked in. Super happy with my new board. I have been looking for a while and stopped at a couple of other shops outside of Rhode Island. Everyone was so friendly in the shop and Fred took some time to explain all the different boards and the styles I should be there working with to start learning. Ran in here once to grab some sunglasses before the beach. The great thing about it is the location. Walking distance from the beach. The bad thing is how expensive this place is. I paid $25 for a pair of sunglasses. Which is the cheapest they had. I've never paid that much- more of a forever 21 shopper but I had lost those. But I though hey time to invest in a real pair that I'll keep for some time. Well they actually started peeling not long after I bought them. Getting blue paint pieces in my hair. It's fine for a last minute fix but I don't think I'd shop here regularly. read more

INSTRUCTOR LEFT MY DAUGHTER IN THE WATER BY HERSELF I paid for an hour of private surf lesson for my daughter. Second Beach is nice beach for such a lesson and Island Surf and Sport has an extensive variety of surfboards. I was really excited for my daughter to hone her skills in another beach. After halfway through my daughter's lesson, the instructor left my daughter in the water by herself. When I asked her why she left my daughter, she replied and said that 'she is so good and doesn't need my help.' On one hand I'm flattered for my daughter but the more I think about it, the more I feel strongly that my daughter should not have been left alone - regardless of her abilities. Not only did she stop teaching - but the instructor went back to the tent, removed her wetsuit and changed into her bikini! The tent is a good 50 feet away from the water. And further still if you are in the water surfing. Much to my horror, when I called and granted two weeks had passed since - the Manager Ed didn't find anything wrong with this scenario. He told me that my daughter is a teenager and there were lifeguards on duty so that my daughter was not in danger!?!? He further questioned me why I was complaining two weeks later. Understandably, we did not return the next day and took lessons somewhere else. Since our return home, I had been busy with the run up to the start of school. But as a parent, I would be remiss to NOT post this negative experience. Whether my daughter knew what she was doing or not, at minimum the instructor should have stayed within an arms length of my daughter. I did not pay for a full hour of private lesson for someone to watch my daughter from afar in a bikini! read more

We overall had a good experience. I signed one of my kids up for the lessons and there were people of all ages learning! I'd love to convince my husband to learn with me and suck up his fear of sea monsters bahahahahaha! My daughter had a great experience and lots of fun! The prices are great also to do the group classes which are labeled camp and school but it's just a name they didn't pick for the group classes. Camp is 2 hrs where the school is 4 hrs of learning. They also rent out boards at reasonable prices also. read more

I have been going here for years. Yesterday a pit bull looking dog aggressively it was rather traumatic. I highly recommend keeping children and other humans away from this establishment, as they may be At risk of attack... here's a bit from my email to the owner... We had searched for a place to rent a windsurfing rig. When I found these guys on Yelp I was hoping it would work out. I called and within 20 min I spoke to Peter twice to work out the details. He gave me his cell phone number to call if there was an issue. He called me to say he was on his way. A young lady was at the site and started looking for us on the beach. They were a fabulous team. These guys are right there on 2nd beach and are so nice! The instructor was a really nice kid who had a lot of patience. I brought my daughter and her friend and they both got up within the first 5 mins. The winds picked up and the waves were a bit big for them, but the instructor was great and really helped them. Rented a surfboard from Peter last weekend while visiting Surfer's End. Very reasonable price for a 9 foot foam top board, and had a blast in the water. Peter was accommodating and easy to talk to- he gave me some pointers about the area and where to surf. Highly recommend renting from Island Surf & Sport's trailer if you find yourself on the beach without a board (like me)! read more

I stopped in here after surfing 2nd Beach for the huge selection of wetsuits, which they had. However, staff in the surf shop were extremely rude and unhelpful. I highly recommend spending your money elsewhere - Matunuck Surf Shop and Narragansett Surf & Skate are full of good people and great apparel and gear. read more

Great beginner surf lesson with surf board and wet suit for our 11 year old

I have been a recurring costumer for years but this year even with covid being lifted has been the worst. My mother rented my cousin, brother and I surf boards and wetsuits for the week which was not cheap and they had the audacity to give us 2 wetsuits out of 3 with holes in them... pretty sure that defeats the purpose of a wetsuit. Not to mention one of the surfboards they provided had 2 fins that practically were about to fall out. The total for the garbage they gave us for the week estimated to over $1200, you'd think for that price we would've gotten decently intact gear, in no way shape or form did I expect anything to be brand new, but come on man. Holes in wetsuits? What a joke! This place has gone further and further downhill as the years go by. Definitely won't be returning to give them anymore of my business. I'd highly recommend not going to them for surf gear, as they're prices are outrages as well. Very disappointed, used to love this shop as a kid. read more

This used to be one of the premier windsurfing stores in the US but it was sold in 2007. Now it sucks. Don't bother.

It was very easy to book a private lesson -- they even went out of their way to change our lesson time for us, on one of the busiest days of the year -- and my daughter got excellent instruction from her teacher. read more

Definitely on the fence whether this store is a savior or a sham. After gaining some shameful winter weight I decided to try on my summer board shorts only to find that they no longer fit. In a bind, and trying to get to the beach to join my friends, I stopped in to pick up a tank top and swim trunks. The selection although vast is very limited due to over shopping of the same general size. It took me almost 45 minutes to find the correct waist size of 34-36. Then when looking for tank tops found they only had two large and one XL in the entire store. The average price of swim trunks is 50 dollars and the and the tank top cost 30 bringing my total to 80 dollars for casual beach wear. To be fair I should have taken care of this in the spring so thank you for having something in my size and getting me to the beach but that cost is outrageous. The staff are kind but not over enthusiastic to help and for those prices I would expect the exact opposite. read more

I'm writing this review in response to the only other review posted. Although this store may have been a premier windsurfing store, windsuring is lame and I'm sure that guy is the only person who is bummed ithey don't have windsurfing stuff still. Instead the store is one of the biggest surf shops on the East Coast, and has a huge selection of surfboardboards, wetsuits, SUP's, clothing and all sorts of beach stuff. They're located right near the beach, they have a friendly, knowledgable staff, and carry pretty much every surf clothing brand out there. Yes, if you are an old windsurfer you probably shouldn't bother going there. If you're looking for a cool surf shop with a great selection, you should check it out. read more

This has been my go-to favorite shop for the past 10 years or so. I love their women's clothing selection (so cute!) and I can always find great unique gifts here for my boyfriend. I travel back and fourth between Newport and Florida and I have been to a lot of surf shops but this is still one of my favorites because it just has a great variety of clothing (not to mention about a million pairs of sandals and sunglasses) and a nice assortment of surf gear and boards. I was in there recently doing some Christmas shopping and they had some really nice winter stuff too. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. read more
