They have a nice selection of skateboards for sale and they also do local maintenance on them. Civil was created by Guido Silvestri and Rob Asselin in 2006. After many years of working in retail, the two founders imagined a store concept outside the realm of the traditional skate/snowboard/surf shop. The vision was realized in 2007 when the first Civil location opened in East Greenwich Rhode Island. Since then they added stores in Providence and Westerly Rhode Island.....this particular one is on Westminster St, Providence downtown. Their product mix at each one of their stores varies to suite the three distinct locations: in the city (Providence), on main street (EG), and by the beach (Westerly). Civil also has a private label collection and they have been honored to collaborate on projects with elite brands including Nike SB and SLVDR. They support local ripping skateboarders and snowboarders, including the notorious Yawgoons. Since they opened, Civil has been involved in the local skateboard and snowboard community by hosting and sponsoring contests, demos, park cleanups, video premiers, and other cultural events. The staff is young and very hip. Mostly guys in their 20s that love skateboarding, so they know their stuff when asked questions. I went to check the prices of a few sneakers and they were very helpful in regards to the differences among them.

It may not be the biggest shop around but it's got a little bit of everything and if they don't have what you're looking for they're willing to try and get it for you. The staff has always been welcoming and knowledgeable. When buying my first surfboard I really wanted a short board but the staff suggested I get something a little bigger to fit my ability and make learning easier. I had my heart set on a short board but after talking with them and really understanding the suggestion I ended up with a fun shape that I still have to this day and love! The employee I worked with said "I'll sell you a short board if you really want me too but if you really want to learn to surf and improve quicker get a fun shape" 4 surf boards later and I'm loving it as much as I did when I started in 2013. Oh and they wouldn't tell me where I could surf which I didn't understand at first but now when people ask me where I surf I tell them I don't speak English.

I had a old gift card that I had received from the North End Boston SOL Optics store which has since closed. I emailed SOL and Elizabeth responded. The GC could not be used on line, however once I found the glasses I wanted Elizabeth tracked them down to Board Stiff (affiliated with SOL). She called the manager of Board Stiff, Burt (who was also great!) and explained the situation. I called Burt, purchased my sunglasses over the phone and they shipped them to me. I am so appreciative of the help and support I received from both Elizabeth and Burt, I had to leave a comment. I 100% recommend both SOL Optics and Board Stiff.
