I was drawn to the coop model because I loved the idea of building a community for not just our children, but our whole family, as well as having the rare opportunity to learn alongside our children. I know a lot of parents today wish for a "village" of support for their families, and I really feel our family has this thanks to the coop. It's the norm for families to schedule impromptu playdates at local parks and check in on each other when someone is sick or welcomes a new baby. And nothing makes me happier than seeing my kids excited to run into coop families and teachers while out in the neighborhood. The staff is also top tier - from the teachers to the parent educators. I've been so impressed by all the thought and care the teachers put into their curriculum and classrooms, as well as how well they know my children. One of my children starts kindergarten next year, and I know he's so ready thanks to all the skills and confidence he's built while at the coop. It's also been so lovely to have the teachers and parent educators as resources and sounding boards during tougher/unfamiliar parenting phases. They've always made me feel seen, supported, and accepted.

My child learned math concepts through cooking and physics through water play. By the time we left for Kindergarten, my child was socially adaptable, curious, and ready to learn--skills that go far beyond just knowing their ABCs. The experience I had at McKnight was the reason I hated school so much. As someone with a good…read moreacademic standing from middle to high school, I reserve the right to say that many of their staff were authoritative red guards and unqualified to teach. The rules are highly restrictive and the school has too many policies, resulting in rebellious and hateful attitudes towards the administrative staff. You're not allowed to use your phone at ANY time of the day including lunch and you are required to be seated at all times in the cafeteria. No student is allowed to carry a backpack or bag of any kind, so they are required to use their locker or carry by hand. You are not allowed to have bags or any school materials during lunch. Their programs are terrible and lacking in advanced STEM courses to prepare for high school. It's ironic how they hang up posters that display, "failure is not an option" because at McKnight, failure is on their agenda.

I decided to take a walk around and check out the new high school renovations, and it's absolutely beautiful. I love all the glass windows throughout the building, it makes the space feel very open and modern. Parking looks pretty much the same as before. If you're a student, you're able to park on the right side of the parking lot. There's also a bus station just down the road from the high school, about a two-minute walk, which a lot of students use. Traffic can get really bad during peak times, especially when students are being dropped off or leaving for the day. Overall, my experience attending this high school was really positive. I loved the people and felt like it was a great school environment. The cafeteria food was pretty decent, you do have to pay for it, and there are also vending machines available. The overall vibe was great, and I genuinely enjoyed my time here. There are also a lot of food places right down the road. If you're a senior and able to leave campus during lunch, I would highly recommend checking them out. Overall, this was a great school and a really positive experience.

There are about 65 kids in 4 grades which seems small but it works out to be an advantage to our kids in the ways that actually matter. My kids did AP and UofW classes, lots of sports, tons of extra curriculars, and grew so much over the four years. One of my kids was super interested in the Jewish part of the dual curriculum and one was less so - but both ended up loving it. Both ended up with their own authentic relationship to their Judaism which seems like one of our top goals. If I was to add one last thought to this, it's that NYHS did a great job at the subtle things that are truly important to the kids' future success and happiness. When we were looking at High Schools 5 years ago, we may not have been focused on the facets that ended up being the most important. Now we know so much more and are so thankful that we ended up at NYHS.
