After my pedicure, I was told I would need to wait about 20 minutes because they were understaffed. I understood that and had no issue waiting. I told the woman at the front desk that I was going next door to get my eyebrows done while I waited. Her response was simply, "Leave something." That comment caught me completely off guard. I've been a regular customer for well over a year, I always pay my bill, and I've never walked out without paying. Being asked to leave something behind as collateral felt unnecessary and disrespectful. I don't want to make this about race because that's not my style, but I do find myself wondering if every customer is asked to do the same thing. I regularly spend over $120 per visit and typically leave a $10 to $20 tip, depending on the quality of the service. On top of that, the salon charges an additional $3.50 for credit or debit card payments, which feels outdated and inconvenient since many people no longer carry cash.
