As first time parents, we found that we didn't have a true understanding of what was best to do once we brought our little guy home from the hospital. Sure - we had read a lot and had additional support to help us get ready, but with Modern Mama, we found a professional who specializes in exactly what we needed - "what does good look like?" / "what should we be doing?" / "what are we doing right/ wrong?" From the moment that Kristin walked into our door, we were met with a calm and welcoming presence that shared recommendations for getting to sleep, eat, and dressed appropriately. She shared with us what most parents do and what is truly a choice for us. What's more, she was an incredible support for my wife who was breastfeeding for the first time, encouraging her and helping her to establish appropriate techniques and set her up with pumping appropriately, which would have taken us weeks without the support. Lastly, Kristin also followed up with us multiple times after the nights that she had stayed, seeing how we were doing and following up with great resources tied to the questions that we had + other professionals that could help with some of the areas that we were looking to develop. We'd highly recommend the support from Modern Mama and specifically Kristin as a doula for and first time parents - I truly believe they were a primary reason for us to start off on the right foot at home. When my wife's water broke, we let the doula know and headed to the hospital. She was also told my wife was contracting. Despite knowing all of this, the doula never came and never once called to check in. We went through the birth of our son without the support we had paid for and counted on. What happened afterward was just as disappointing. Rather than taking responsibility, we were told it was our fault for not explicitly instructing her to come -- even though she knew we were at the hospital and in labor. Instead of accountability we were blamed for not "telling her to come" -- as if a laboring mother at the hospital isn't signal enough. When we asked to speak with the owner, no one had the courtesy to call us directly.

I couldn't recommend Noleen more! I actually had no plans to have a doula for my first pregnancy…read moreuntil I was at a birthing class and found out that I was one of the only ones there who hadn't secured a doula. After doing some research, I found that my insurance covered doula services, so I immediately began researching doulas. I came across Noleen and noticed her across the board 5 star reviews. At this point, I was 36 weeks pregnant and thought "There is no way this woman is going to be available for my delivery." I reached out to her on a Friday night and she responded back within a few hours! We briefly corresponded over the weekend and had a meeting set up for the next week. I'm SO grateful she was available. I enjoyed learning from her and hearing her balanced perspective about labor and delivery. It quickly became apparent that as a woman going through all of this the first time, having a doula was a must! By the time I went into labor a few weeks later, I texted Noleen, who was in labor with another patient. I was heartbroken to think she may miss my labor. She was able to send a backup doula to my birthing center, but that was only needed for a few hours before Noleen went from her other labor into mine (with maybe a few hours rest in between). Noleen showed up in the morning on a Tuesday and my baby wasn't born until the following day (Wednesday) at 9:23am. So to think Noleen went from one labor to the next with very minimal rest shows that she is superwoman! My labor wasn't an easy one and I REALLY struggled to relax and just allow everything to loosen up. I would get so tense, which ended up prolonging labor to the point where I requested to be transferred from the Birthing Center to a hospital so that I could get an epidural. I was scared that Noleen, my birthing team and my spouse would be disappointed in me, but Noleen was so reassuring that this was the right move for me. I felt supported and understood. There were many moments in the labor where it was so helpful to have Noleen there to answer questions, provide perspective and expertise. Which was incredibly helpful for my spouse as well. It felt like he and Noleen were partners in the birthing process. It's now something I tell all expecting couples is that the Doula is there for the husband just as much as she's there for the wife. My husband really appreciated having her there to ask questions (and vent about the prolonged process!). I also got the package with the photography and the photos Noleen took are so very special to us. It's actually hard to narrow down which ones to frame. There is one that Noleen captured of my husband crying immediately after the baby was born. It's something I didn't notice or even see because I was so focused on the baby. But every time I see that picture, I tear up (currently tearing up as I'm writing this!). I never would have known that moment even existed without Noleen capturing it! We also had her do the postpartum visit with photos and I've sent them to so many family members and they all agree that Noleen did a fantastic job! I could go on and on, but I want others to read this, so I don't want to be too lengthy :). I will definitely be reaching out to Noleen as soon as I find out I'm pregnant with baby #2 (God willing!).

Her constant words of affirmation and reminders that my body was made for this helped me stay grounded and trust the process. During early labor she guided me through different positions that helped me stay comfortable and keep things progressing naturally. What meant even more was how deeply she respected and supported the birth experience I wanted. At one point she even suggested a different provider and hospital that would better align with my goals, and that guidance made a huge difference in my journey. Throughout it all she was calm, encouraging, and completely present. Her support helped me feel strong, informed, and empowered during one of the most important experiences of my life. I'm incredibly grateful we had her by our side. Because of her guidance and support, I was able to have the unmedicated birth I had hoped for!! She also took wonderful photos throughout the process. We hired Ashley for the birth of my second child, when I was attempting an unmedicated VBAC after a horrendous experience with my first birth. I knew I wanted labor support for this birth, but honestly hiring a doula was a little "crunchy" and outside of our realm of comfort. From the first meeting with Ashley I could tell that I was completely wrong! Ashley was so real and down to earth, and made us both feel completely at ease and prepared for our TOLAC and hopeful VBAC. During actual labor, Ashley came when I told her I needed her, and helped me to do relax through contractions and do some exercise to try to turn my posterior baby. We labored at home with her help for as long as possible, and when I felt "pushy" she got us to the hospital and into a room ready to have a baby! Her coaching through early labor, transition, and especially pushing was instrumental to my successful VBAC. She was amazing at addressing my fears during labor and made sure I was informed and felt completely in control the whole time, as well as kept my husband calm and helped him to be involved with helping me. She knew just where to touch, and exactly what to say during contractions, especially at the end when things get more intense. My birth in 2020 began unmedicated with midwife support in-hospital, and ultimately ended in c-section due to lack of progress (water breaking before contractions started, among other complications outside of our control). She helped me navigate birth at a hospital amongst the chaos of 2020 times, and was so incredibly reassuring about any of my concerns being a first time mom. Although the birth didn't end the way I initially desired, I felt supported during every decision, so the acceptance of the situation not going according to my initial desires was easier to arrive to with Alyssa's support. In 2023, I had a beautiful VBAC at a birth center. This experience was wholeheartedly different, where I was able to spend most of my time laboring at home. Alyssa walked beside me during every step of the way (for many hours again, as my body brings babies very slowly and intensely to earth ). She massaged, recommended position changes and whispered sweet nothings in my ear all night and morning while my husband was able to rest. When it came time to go to the birth center and bring baby into the world, it was her voice that carried me though the intensity of the end of an unmedicated birth.
