We only discovered this through Resy and I'm so glad we did. This is our go to sushi place now. The quality of sashimi is phenomenal. The place might seat 10 seats at most. So, plan accordingly. It's a very unassuming space located in a food hall, they have options for to go trays near the entrance if you can't be seated. Don't leave here without some food to be had because everything was exceptional here, from fatty tuna, yellowtail (our favorite), to uni and chirashi/unagi bowls. The rainbow roll exceeded my expectations. The crab filling inside the rainbow roll was the standout. It makes the roll taste authentic. Try it and tell me it's not different. We splurge everytime we come here because the quality is top tier and the staff are so welcoming and kind. You can pop in for a bite or grab to go and be on your way. Itani Sushi was my destination for an early lunch on Monday, known for their convenient, grab 'n go combos that seem to be good quality and sold at a reasonable price point. it's the first establishment in your line of vision when you step into this small food hall and we zeroed in on the display case immediately. There were already plenty of boxes set out, but I opted for a classic nigiri combo with maki for $20! If you walk down a little bit, there's some bar seating where you can eat your meals from any of the establishments in the hall. There's quite a few spots for the amount of space in there, and it was basically empty when we went at noon. Itani also provides chopsticks and soy sauce so you can enjoy it if you leave with your meal. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at how decent it was. It could have tasted fresher had we just ordered sat at the sushi bar and ordered the combo rather than getting the boxed meal, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. $20 is a pretty reasonable price compared to other places now, and for this quality + convenience, I couldn't argue with the price. I don't do sushi bars. This is my first here in the states. It's a no frill place where you order using an erasable marker. The presentation for a sushi bar is amazing. The chef is right in front of you and he was nice enough to slice the hamachi a little thinner so we can share the appetizer among 3 of us. My chirasi bowl was served a little different. You get a bowl of perfectly cooked rice. Then comes a tray of beautifully cut fish. Everything is fresh here. My friend beside me ordered a bunch of nigiri. I arrived about 10 minutes before closing. Surprisingly, that actually turned out to be a bonus. The friendly young woman behind the counter let me know that they were having a last hour special today where everything was 50% off in the to-go case! It all looked good at their regular prices. Suddenly it looked even better! I got two of the 5 pc Nigiri & Maki Roll combos ($10 each after discount), and then two rolls ($5 and $7.50 after discount). I was only gonna get one roll but at half price I could not resist. Even though what was there had to have been there for a while, being end of the day, it still tasted fresh, and absolutely appetizing. Unfortunately, they don't have the 50% last hour deal every day. Maybe that's fortunate for me because I'd be tempted to come here every day. Itani's part of a higher-end food court, and it's a takeout spot, so there isn't any real seating. I placed a reservation the night before but it honestly wasn't necessary. It was a cute little bar area which was nice. I ordered salmon nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, albacore nigiri, toro nigiri, agadashi tofu, spicy salmon roll, and the crispy Alaskan roll. All the nigiri were perfectly sweet with the sushi rice and the fish was so soft and just melted in my mouth. The salmon roll was filled to the brim with spicy salmon and there wasn't a heavy sriracha flavor which I liked. The crispy alaskan roll was so good but I wish the salmon wasn't cooked. Since Kirala went out of business at this location, I have been wondering what would take its place. I was super happy to see another sushi place come in. Even happier to see it was staffed by some of my favorite sushi chefs who used to work at Mujiri. The sushi here is affordable, super fresh, with great quality fish, perfect rice and elevated in the way they package it. It's a food court, but the ambience is nice and there are plenty of tables both indoors and outdoors for you to sit down and eat. I really like to sit outside as they have a really beautiful garden. I tried the potato salad, the avocado roll, the Negihama Roll and the California roll. The potato salad was nice, tasty, and comforting. The avocado roll was delicious with perfect avocado. The California roll was excellent and they use real crab, which was a nice treat. And the Negihama roll was super good and fresh and tasty. I'll definitely be going back and I'm looking forward to trying new things. My favorites were definitely the California roll and the avocado roll but everything was good. read more

Back to exploring food in the Bay Area after spending some time in Asia this winter - I was curious what was new, and Itani was listed by Eater. They seem to specialize in to-go sushi and I got some delivered. For delivery / to go sushi this was very fresh and a good variety too - the combo I got had some not as common fish and a piece of toro. Overall I was impressed and it certainly satisfied my sushi craving of the day. I also got karaage and spinach, both were pretty good and tasted slightly different than other places. The chicken had a thicker batter and the spinach had a slightly more sourness in the flavor. I liked them and would try other things in the future too. read more

I've been getting take out mainly since they opened and always had a great experience except for today. Now it looks like they have done in bar seating options in addition to general outdoor seating. So looking forward to that. Today I ordered 6 piece sashimi - fresh and delicious; with ohitashi, which very disappointing based on what I know about how it should taste and prior purchases. It tasted old and tasteless. I had to throw it out because I didn't know what was wrong with it. A minor cost but still, it was supposed to be my vegetable at lunch, and I had put out the money. I will likely continue to get food there since this is a one off, but next time I feel like having some ohitashi, I will make sure I see what is in the package instead of ordering it off the menu - most of the time if they have it in the take out case you can eye it. I would have preferred that they told me they ran out (whatever the reason is for it's not fresh today) rather than selling me what I got. read more

First, the fish quality was good, I'll definitely give it that. The rolls were not super tightly rolled, which is not amazing but it's okay. I'm confused about the "futomaki." I don't think I would call what I received "futomaki". When I called to order, they said they didn't have tamago and could replace it with avocado. That's fine, and it was great that they let us know. However, when we got the roll, they didn't have half of the ingredients that go in futomaki that I usually order in the states (carrots, spinach, other Japanese pickled vegetables, maybe some mushrooms) and instead had a *ton* of red ginger (which by itself has a very strong flavor). Inside was cucumber, marinated yellow radish, and the red ginger. It turned out really salty. Also, the negihama quality was fine but there wasn't any scallions and there was a scale in one of the pieces :( I was expecting a more professional futomaki from a place that's so highly rated (and in the place of kirala), but the other rolls and nigiri tasted good with not too much rice. read more

Itani popped up as a 'Hot and New Restaurant' on Yelp, and based off the reviews, we wanted to give it a shot. It's located inside a small food hall. It seems they have taken over the spot Kirala used to be. They're semi-takeout only, but they have small seating areas scattered throughout the food hall. We opted to just enjoy our sushi takeout there since there wasn't many people around. Between my partner and I, from the refrigerator section, we picked up a 1) Maki Roll + 5 pc. Nigiri Combo, and 2) Ohitashi. We also ordered 1) Yonsei Seared Albacore Roll, and 2) Hotate Sashimi x 2, which were made-to-order. Service was pretty nice with their explanations. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but I thought the Hotate on their menu under Nigiri/Sashimi could be sold as a Sashimi order, but it's not typically. Their price on the menu is for 2 pcs of Nigiri I believe. However, because we asked about it, they said they could make it, but it'll be charged as two orders and they added an extra piece so 5 in total! Maybe they were just feeling nice that day, who knows, but I appreciate it! We started on our Maki Roll + 5 pc. Nigiri Combo and the Ohitashi first since the other two were made-to-order. The Ohitashi was quite delicious. It seems fairly simple to make as it's Spinach with soy dashi dressing. While it was tasty, I'm not sure it's worth the price, but it certainly inspired us to want to try making it ourselves at home. As for our Maki Roll + 5 pc. Nigiri Combo, this was good, but not amazing. The combo comes with Kanpachi, Umi Masu, Hamachi, Maguro, and Sake. While I think they're fairly fresh, I feel like for the price point, I could get something even more fresh with just a few additional bucks. I enjoyed the Maki roll though - that was pretty good. This is also only an assumption, but I think because we picked it up from the refrigerated section, the flavor was just okay for the Nigiri pieces. Their made-to-order items were pretty good though! I would probably recommend you order right off the menu if you have a bit of time to wait. But if you don't, refrigerator selection is a quick and easy meal. We thought their Hotate was pretty fresh and they gave generously sized portion scallops! I liked the additional bits of ikura added to the top. I also really enjoyed the Yonsei Seared Albacore Roll. The tempura adds a nice crunchiness to each bite, and the seared Albacore was just a tad smokey. Presentation for these made-to-order items were on-point too, but if you're not dining in, you can't really expect it. I'm definitely glad we gave it a try though. Part of our reason for going out tonight was to try Itani. It's a nice, affordable, friendly place if you're around the area and looking for sushi, but it's just not quite worth the trek out there for us when we have better options available closer to our own area. We came here on a Saturday night for 2 at the new dine-in sushi bar! It was an absolute amazing experience. We ordered 2 sets of the Baller Set (3-course sushi set) which came with edamamae, Maze-Pon, 8 pieces of amazing nigiri, and a Snow Crab Handroll. In addition we also got the Shungiku Kakiage (mixed veggie tempura) which was recommended by Jeremias who took care of us extremely well! It was the perfect balance to our nigiri set, it had really good batter and was fried with fresh and quality oil (our throats did not hurt at all afterwards). The Maze-Pon appetizer was delicious, there was a little bit of truffle which added a nice bit of umami. We really enjoyed the 8 piece nigiri, it was simple but fresh and cut with amazing technique. You could tell the chefs really knew their stuff. The Iwana was our favorite piece! It was so good we even ordered more along with extra scallop nigiri and toro nigiri. Itani is NOT Kirala, the prior sushi restaurant that used to occupy this space. Itani is much better. I used to frequent Kirala over the years, and early on, they were excellent. Then, during the last 3 years or so of their occupancy, their quality went down. When Itani took over the space I thought "I hope Itani is better than what Kirala turned into." Fortunately, Itani is first rate. I recently ordered the 7 piece combo + California roll with tobiko. Both were excellent; fresh and tasty. I'll go back. read more
