I adopted my dog from them over a year ago and couldn't be happier. The communication from everyone was so helpful in this process. When I filled out my app, my references and I I were contacted quickly about adopting. I love that they did phone interviews and home visits to assure I was a worthy adopter. They won't adopt out dogs to just anyone. They truly want what's best for the dogs! The volunteers are all so nice and were so helpful and transparent through the whole process. I am a foster for about 2 1/2 years of a 13 year old blind pitbull. Upon picking her up this rescue paid to have her lime green glaucoma eyes surgically removed. Glaucoma eyes are very painful to the dog, doctors offered morphine for pain. The surgery was not cheap but they didn't hesitate at all. Before I joined Its A Pittie, I knew them from networking stray dogs in my area. They had a good reputation and were honest. They ran a strict program that I really appreciated because all of the steps in the end, are for the dog's best interest. I've experienced rescues that rush and cut corners and it never is good in the end for the dog. They always taken on medical cases and abuse cases that many rescues would pass up and they are all local dogs. Now I am part of the rescue, started out fostering to doing other things and I am glad things are still the way they were when I was an outsider. Rescue is not easy and not everyone can and will be happy, but all these people do their best. Being a foster based rescue, you have to manage so many moving parts and troubleshoot when things arise. The dogs ride in a horrible van like 50 dogs inside a van for 30 hours . They potty and vomit and stay in those conditions one of the driver's told me how horrible is please. This is not the rescue to go through. They are horribly unprofessional and manipulative. They also removed our review and post. We had rescued a pup who they said was great with kids. Within a week he has bit our daughter knocked her off the couch which she then smacked her face on the end table. He did great with us one on one but with my 3 year old daughter you could tell he did not like sharing that attention. We had to cage him the majority of the day which is not fair to him or us. We contacted the agency and they said horrible things to us once we stated we need to give him back. Things no human should say to another. When choosing a dog or my daughters safety I will always (clearly) choose my child. You guys need some new management or education on compassion for humans not just animals. read more

I had a terrible experience with this rescue. While I will acknowledge they do help rescue many dogs, they treat their volunteers and fosters like garbage in the meantime. I fostered a fear-aggressive dog from them for 7 months. I volunteered to take her in on a foster basis due to the temperament issues she had to see if she would overcome those issues with training and love. After experiencing a food aggression and aggressiveness towards guests and family members, I was told to feed her in her crate so she wouldn't bite me and hide her in a back room when guests came over. The rescue did NOTHING to attempt to rehabilitate her and instead just wanted to ignore her issues. I was her third foster to return her to the rescue due to aggression, and I only did so after she bit A CHILD in the face. They fail to inform their fosters that they are solely liable for any lawsuit arising from an injury caused by a foster dog. The rescue focuses more on adopting out cute puppies than getting help for dogs with aggression who should be a top priority. Maybe if they focused their attention on helping the dogs who need it most, they would not have lost two dogs in the past few months due to human bites and fights with resident dogs. But then again, you will never hear of those two dogs. They will be erased from their Facebook page and never mentioned again. Rest in Peace Pookie and Marley. Wish I could give 0 stars. read more

Management does not know how to communicate properly. I filled out an application form. I Was in communication to visit the shelter and some pretty puppies. I drove from Chicago (a 2 hour round trip drive) only to find out that the 2 dogs I was interested in visiting with were not at the shelter anymore. How does this information not get shared within the 24 hour time frame of making an appointment and actually visiting their facility. It's too bad that they are doing good deeds in an unprofessional way. Stay strong little puppies! read more

Ever since I posted this review, I've had countless people come up to me and tell me that they've had similar experiences with this organization. I highly recommend checking out the review in the "Not Recommended" section from the foster family who caught the board members discussing all of the problems that the organization is having. Recently, a friend's sister, who is fostering a dog for It's A Pittie, was told by them that she needs to either adopt her foster dog or PUT HIM TO SLEEP after he bit a child at THEIR event due to their negletance when she tried to tell them that he had behavioral issues. Please see the pictures I am adding to this page (which, of course, It's A Pittie deleted off of their page). I can't believe this organization is even allowed to continue on as a business - these animals would be better off at Petland, which says a lot. read more

This place does not even deserve 1 star!! They are ignorant and rude!!! They age discriminate!!!! They tell you what they want you to have and do. They learn nothing about you as a person. They let you think they are processing your application. They will tell you that you are too old to take care of a puppy that will grow into a big dog, BUT, then they try to convince you to foster. Makes zero sense that they feel you are too old for one dog but not too old to foster another. Stay clear of this place!!! Another poster here is right, they will bully Facebook you like crazy! I do not even know where to begin. This rescue is AMAZING!!! It is a timely process from application to adoption but so worth every second of it! They really make sure they place the right dogs in the right homes. We adopted Tesla yesterday and we could not be happier with how everything was done throughout the adoption process. Our phone interviewer Brooklyn was super pleasant and answered all of our questions, plus told me to save her # for any questions, also followed up with me about the steps to come. Our home check was done by Jessica who also was very comforting and helpful on what needed to be done. Then came our meet and greets with Debbie, Stacey, and Paige all were so welcoming, patient, and helpful! We now have the best pup to match our 7 year old pitty. After reading all of these reviews, I thought it was just me that had a horrible experience with this group. Back in 2012 I adopted a 4 month old pit mixed with boxer. I was told that she had been abused by men and was afraid of them. I explained that I live in a house full of men. They told me it may take 3 months to a year to get her right. I took her to training classes and as it turned out. I was the only one that could walk her, feed her, play with her. I had to keep her crated which was horrible. I begged the group to please take her back. That just fell on death ears. When she would hear men voices she would try to get out of the crate. It was horrible. I ended up taking her to the shelter and while in the shelter, she tried to attack a man. I explained to them what I had been going through for the past 3 months. She had a chip and they contacted It's a Pittie and guess what? They had no problem picking her up the very next day when I begged for 3 months. They trashed me on Facebook and the comments from their followers were unbelievable. Never again will I go with this group. read more

I adopted a puppy in late 2016 from IPR and have never been happier. They made everything so easy and yet were very thorough. I had 3 dogs at the time and they made the necessary arrangements through my village to allow me to have another. I did a meet and greet and also had an afternoon with her to interact with my dogs. They worked around my schedule, were very professional and so very nice. Thank you for turning me onto pitties. To be honest, giving one star is rather generous. Within the last few weeks, I had filed an application to potentially adopt a Pit Bull puppy. I had found the perfect little pup on their Facebook page, and had decided it was time to apply. After applying, I was looking through their site, and noticed that many of their "rules" were rather ridiculous and outrageous. I should have taken that as an indicator right then and there, but I wanted to continue with the application process. I received an email confirming my application and to be on the look out for the initial screening phone call. Which came well over a week later, until what the email had told me. Another indicator. While speaking with the person over the phone, I could tell she seemed to be rather standoffish, because I wanted a puppy that was under 6 months old, and IPR has a "strict" rule of not adopting puppies under 6 months out to homes where there is no dog. Here is a little word of advice to them.... If I had a dog, I wouldn't be looking at IPR to rescue another one, I would have looked elsewhere. Well after that phone call, and screening and calling my references, who all told me that they gave answers that seemed pleasing to her ears, the next step was the home visit. There the person arrived as scheduled, and all members in the household (being myself and my boyfriend) were there. We provided a tour of the home, showing whatever was requested and then we sat in the living room and talked. We both gave our history of pets and even spoke about our work schedules and a few other things that were pleasing to the person's ears regarding our care, until the training was brought up. We stated that we would be taking the dog to a police training facility, just like my boyfriend's previous Pit Bull, and this is where the person put out a firm "not acceptable" because of the use of prong collars. Now no offense to anyone, but speaking from experience, dogs that go through Police Training facilities are much more well behaved than those trained in "positive reinforcement" only places. And I am sure there are many who would agree with me on this. Well, after that home visit, it took over two weeks to receive the email stating that we were "deemed not fit" to adopt because of the type of training we will be going with. Now here is where I get really mad, because not long after that email, and my request for a detailed explanation of why we were not deemed fit, IPR shared a video on Facebook of Pit Bull puppies, within the 6 month age, going through Police Training, and the video explaining how it is giving the bully breed a chance to prove themselves. Well, my boyfriend commented, which I am glad he did and not myself. I look the next day, the shared video in question... has been deleted. In my opinion, the people who work at It's a Pittie Rescue, should be trained properly on how to screen potential adopters, and really rethink their ridiculous rules and requirements. I will never adopt through this so called organization, and as a matter of fact, I probably will write another email to them, providing links to proven studies about how dogs should be trained and probably on how screening should be done. To anyone considering either fostering or adopting, look elsewhere. This organization is a huge joke. read more

If there was an option to give this zero stars I would. Do not be deceived by the 5 stars given to this rescue by previous reviewers. THEY ARE ALL ON THE IT'S A PITTIE RESCUE BOARD. So of course they would hype up their ratings. It's hard to describe my experience without using vulgar language. Although they don't have a problem bashing anyone on their website and calling children "little assholes". I'm better at making bullet points so that is how I will describe my experience. - The rescue contacted us at least once daily during the whole foster approval application. Once approved, we never heard/seen them. - When picking up said foster dog in a parking lot, the women had no information to give us about the dog. Said that she was a stray that they had picked up. Later finding out from a different woman that she was from a family that had children and what not. SOOOO.... What story is the right one?? Never giving us one bit of history in regards to vaccines, heartworm prevention, or flea and tick. - Going in blind now, we discovered that she does not like men, cats, small animals, and is food aggressive. (Which the rescue was well aware that we had a zoo at our house) - She did have fleas, which is an easy fix, but still... communication. If we would have known then she received her last preventatives we could have kept her up to date. - She attacked one of the other dogs in the house multiple times, leaving many bite wounds. - After reporting this to the rescue, they basically swept us under the rug and didn't think it was a big deal. So to them it is okay that this foster dog attacks our own pets. What kind of household would allow their own pets to feel like outsiders?? NOT US. These issues were brought to their attention several times and they were negligent to help. This could have been prevented. They never once did a home visit with the dog, to see how she would act towards our pets. But I'm sure my family will be on blast on their Facebook page and many people will judge. But until you put yourself in our shoes you are not fully aware of the situation. It's sad that it had to come to this, I am fully aware that it is not the actual dogs fault. read more

I'm posting this a s 1 star but,I really would of given it a 0 if I could, for anyone wanting to have anything to do with this Rescue. I contacted Kate V. (look familiar she's on the board) to start the fostering process. Put an application in , stating I have a cat, dogs and other small animals. After weeks of them researching me and my family I was told that when I get a dog there would be a home check, to see if the dog I would be fostering would get along with my dogs and my other animals. Well, this was so not true. instead I was sent pictures of dogs daily, when the day finally came I was then contacted by Kate to pick up a dog, at CACC. We get half way there I get a call saying the dog was gone (adopted out). 2 hours later, another call" we have a dog for you", they send me videos of a dog at CACC. My husband and I drive 2 hours to meet again at CACC, we get in the parking lot and there's the dog. No papers ,just the dog, a leash, and a crate. We followed every guide line in the "Tips for New Fosters" email they sent,not a call or email from them for 3 weeks to ask how the dog was. Until I emailed them informing them that this dog does not like men and wants to eat my cat. I have a husband and a son, the dog warmed up to my husband my son not so much, constantly growling and nipping at him. But we hung in there, we were told to use treats, which did work. In the meantime, I'm in contact with someone at this rescue about my other animals, and how the foster dog attacked my dog multiple times . They didn't care too much about this, until I had to forced them to come get the dog. I was threatened to be sued if I didn't hold the dog. They only came for the dog until I threatened them to turn the dog over to Animal control. These volunteers or people who sit behind a computer watching U-tube videos of dogs at CACC are rude, arrogant, and lairs . I know there were warning signs from the get go, but in our hearts we wanted to help an animal . So please, if you feel the need to help out an animal do your homework and stay away from this Rescue.You'll pay the price on their FB page with all the bullying that goes on there. read more

From start to finish I had nothing but an incredible experience. Each step was explained, there was genuine kindness for me, and these women truly love the dogs they've rescued. I couldn't have imagined a better experience, and now I have THE most amazing dog I could have ever asked for. I'd adopt from this group and recommend this rescue group all day long! Warning/Tips - Overall process took 3 months. - If you are former military/police these characteristics are viewed as a negative by this organization. - At the meet and greet everyone must ask questions and only pay attention to the dog. - You can make it through all the steps in the process and a month later find out you are unfit for their dogs after already agreeing to adopt a specific dog. I'm former military and police and so is my wife. I was told after going through the very extensive process that the board who i never met does not see me fit to adopt a dog. The reasons were my answer to training questions seemed firm and militaristic. None of my answers said anything about any type of physical or cruel punishment. This was apparently derived merely from the tone of my voice. Another reason I was given was that not all my family members seemed engaged with the dog at the meet and greet. My 7 year old daughter who clearly would be the primary care giver of this k9 was more interested in the daughter of foster family who was the same age. When this happens you will be told that clearly one person is not interested in the dog ergo your family does not want the dog which equals the dog would be unwanted in your home. I left the meet and greet and informed them i would like to adopt the dog. I was told great and we made arrangements to exchange after the dog recovered from being spayed in a week. Surgery was delayed as the dog went into heat. I reached out the the foster 3 weeks later to see if the surgery had been rescheduled and heard nothing back for 5 days then got an email that i was unfit to adopt. Save your time and use a different organization that wants to help dogs get into good homes. Or use the knowledge i've posted here and give them exactly what they want you to be. This org is passing on great homes for dogs in need for reasons that are unclear/foolish to me. read more

The board members here are unaccountable, dishonest, and rude to people who adopt from or volunteer for them. Many of the volunteers we worked with were awesome. My family adopted from this organization in January 2014 after passing the thorough application process. Upon finding a dog everything took a turn for the worst. As soon as he saw our 2 cats he chased them straight under our bed. Due to his persistent behavior we separated him. The dog had separation anxiety so anytime we placed him in the kennel he would scrape his head on the walls until he bled and yelped for an hour before settling down to sleep. We had experience with a yelping dog in a kennel so we would stay in sight until he would settle down, always an hour later. This was not a fun exercise. The scraping was cared for with anxiety medicine prescribed from the organizations vet. The dog also showed signs of aggressive play so our home became a 'no run' zone for everyone even our four year old son. The dog also displayed a high drive to chase anything taken away from him. The anxiety medication helped us introduce the dog to proper play techniques and allowed us to work on commands like "leave it." After a week of separating the dog from the cats we called the previous foster and she said to take down the gate and allow the animals to get acquainted. This ended similar to the previous experience but this time with a broken bed. We explained our cat situation to the volunteer who helped us in choosing the dog so the board members sent a trainer to our home to help. We adjusted a few things like feeding procedures and she provided homework for us to do with the cats. Each night after his walk we would take him into our basement next to a storage room where the cats stayed. We would praise him every time he displayed calmness. We did this for two weeks and his drive for the cats never lessened. Once the trainer revisited to witness the progress or lack there of, she wrote a letter to the board members explaining the dog was not a good fit for our home and informed them that we were willing to hold him until a foster could take him. Three months went by without hearing anything but "send us pictures." We even took the dog to a pet expo for others to meet. We sent pictures and video to volunteers and posted them on their facebook page. Hardly any of them were posted all while new dogs were being fostered constantly. One evening online we discovered their board members' group discussion thread open for all to read, most likely by mistake. We read all the issues the agency was dealing with from poor placements to troubled employees and canceled events. We even found out the dog we adopted was rehomed due to nipping at the fosters children. The discussion thread was made private the next day and quickly changed once upon discovering their mistake. This adoption came to an end due to a family emergency forcing us to board the dog at $40 a night. We called and left messages everyday until the day we had to leave and finally an actual board member called that day to discuss options. The resolution was to drop off the dog at their boarding facility for the week we were gone and pick him up upon our return. This wasn't an option for us since the facility was two hours away. The board member called back and provided us with their facility address to "release ownership" of the dog. After dealing with the situation for six months we jumped on the offer and drove the two hours to drop him off. A lot of money, time, and training went into the dog to counteract the improper placement and in the end all we received was a "due to returning a dog we can no longer adopt to you' result. A horrible experience for us and our son sometimes says he misses the dog. Our cats have regained the weight they lost and living in peace. We have even salvaged their trust in canines by introducing them with a friend's dog. Good luck in your dealings with this organization. read more

Everything that I've experiences through It's A Pittie has been a positive experience. They really are passionate about the breed and helping as many dogs as they possibly can. I know it is a volunteer based rescue that relies on donations, so I was very impressed to see how much support and feedback I received throughout my experiences there. They do have a thorough application process that takes more than one day to do as you would experience a lot of other places. I like it better because they do it for the safety of their dogs. I've read the bios on the dogs and know that some of the dogs rescued have had horrible pasts, and they just want to make sure this doesn't happen to another dog again. If you want a fast adoption, this is not the rescue for you. If you want to go through a rescue that makes sure that they do everything in their power to place one of their dogs in the best home possible, than this is your rescue. read more

Wonderful Rescue. Keep in mind that most people who take the time to write reviews do so because they are spurred by negative emotions. So the good often isn't posted! I started fostering with this rescue earlier this year. I had applied to foster with other rescues, but It's a Pittie Rescue (IPR) was the only rescue to not only respond to my request, but keep me updated on the process. This is all volunteer, not a business, so I knew it would take time. I was approved and asked them to pick a dog for me to foster based on my situation (having a dog and a cat). They suggested a dog that played well with another dog, but informed me on not knowing how she'd do with cats. From day one, I have had nothing but support. She was a lovely dog that, like so many in bad situations, needed some work. But she soon blossomed. She didn't do well at adoption events, but I continued to take her to help work on her manners. I had several people in the rescue tell me how much better she's gotten and they were so positive with telling me how good I was with her. Loved the feedback. Whenever there was an issue, I had people to contact and a whole group of others to ask. Always got a response. Someone eventually wanted to adopt her. The board handled the paperwork and once the adopter was approved, they let me in the loop on what to do. Helped arrange meet n greets and exchanged contact info. Everyone was prompt in their responses. It went smoothly. My foster was soon adopted. And I couldn't be happier with my experience. To others, I'd just like to say that there will always be mistakes made in rescue. It's tough. To have to pick who lives or who stays in bad conditions, to make sure those dogs are taken care of medically and mentally, to go through the legal process of acquiring those dogs, to arranging events to show adoptable dogs and raise funds to support the ongoing expense of caring for the dogs and to screen and filter through potential adopters to make sure that the most brutalized breed of dog is in fact going to a good home is A LOT of work...work that only pays in the satisfaction of knowing you've saved a life. And all of this done during everyone's spare time...time between work, family, their own dogs and their own personal issues. This rescue was more organized than any other rescue I sought after, and that's why I chose to go with them. read more

We lost our last pit bull in the spring, and knowing that we wanted to rescue another dog, we started looking when we felt like we had started healing. We went through It's a Pittie's long application process, including asking multiple people to be references and showing them pictures of dogs we hoped to meet. About a week after submitting all of our paperwork, we were informed that they would not adopt a dog to people that lived in the city we did because of a past bad experience. It didn't matter to them that we previously owned 2 different bully breeds, that we'd had dogs our whole life, or that we now had to go back to all of those people who kept asking how our dog hunt was going and tell them we hadn't been approved- which, of course, opened the door to more questions. I had strongly suggested that they add this (and any other cities they wouldn't adopt to) on their website. They haven't. Adopting a dog is a long and emotionally hard process. Don't set people up for disappointment. read more

My family and I first get aquatinted with It's a Pittie Rescue a little over 4 years ago when we adopted our first dog through IPR. The process started with an on line application. A couple days later we were contacted for a phone interview and at that time it was explained that the next step was reference checks and background check followed by a home visit and finally a meet with adoptable dogs. i have adopted 2 awesome rescue dogs from ipr and i know several families who foster i could not be happier with my rescue choice. they were very concermed about how the dogs would be living. i am pleased they do home viaits. to many places just let u take the dog home. everyone i have been in contact wiyh had been more then helpfu even with training after i adopted. when i adopted my dog i visited the boarding facility where i was decidiing on ehich dog would be the best fit for me. i was impressedat how the volunteers were with these dogs. they were spoiled just like they were their on dogs. this rescue puts their heart and soul into every dog they bring in. keep up the good work. I was looking for another dog and wanted to rescue a pitbull. Ij already had 2 senior dogs at home and wanted introductions. I was easily approved and started looking at the available dogs. I found one that I felt would work out but when I inquired about her, I was told she was going on an introduction so I could get her. That was a warning I ignored. I couldn't meet her because she MIGHT get adopted? What if that intro didn't work and mine could? Anyway, another introduction was set up. She came over to meet my dogs. It was a little anxious but alright. A few weeks passed and I couldn't stop thinking about the dog. I asked if she could stay at my house for a few days and was given permission. All was well until she attacked my dog. I did manage to pull them apart. My dog wasn't hurt but did notify the rescue. I decided to let her stay and give her another try. But when she attacked my dog a second time and drew blood,I felt that was it. The dog went back to foster. After the attacks, the rescue felt the adoption would work out. I felt like this dog was being pushed on me, no other dog was ever suggested. After she left, I haven't heard form them since. I adopted a pitbull from animal welfare 2 months ago. It's a Pittie Rescue is a rescue with heart, My daughter took in a pit from a co worker she did not want this sweet girl to be put on the streets or put down, After she tried to take care of her herself but she worked so many hours and suspected the dog had medical issues but refused to put her down she deserved a good life.After email and contacting over 25 rescues and only 2 returned her call the first one said No we cant take her were full up. Low and behold the angels of IPR came in and helped her out. They took the dog but my daughter fostered her, they paid for every single vet visit which were many, had her spade, ran may blood tests only to find out the poor girl had diabetes. Well they gave her special food more vet bills, insulin and everything that went along with it. We'll i kept the dog for a week while my daughter was on vacation and low and behold i fell in love with this little Pup. I filled out the adoption paper work, had the home check, People From IPR would check on us and come with us to a vet visit. I was blessed to be accepted to adopt this sweet little pittie. Even with her diabetes "WHICH I KNEW BEFORE I OFFICIALLY ADOPTED HER " and was asked Do you want to take on a dog with a life long issue, I SAID HECK YES.
