I had a really upsetting experience with Katherine at IV Hair Salon and feel it's important to share so others don't go through the same. I booked a $150 appointment as a treat to myself. The day before, I found out I had a last-minute work obligation and left a voicemail asking if it was possible to reschedule -- I never asked to cancel and it was 9 minutes past the 24-hour window. I never got a reply until hours later, when I received this message from her: "Hi, I received your voicemail about the mix up. Per my cancelation policy shown prior to booking there is a fee of the full appointment price of $150 for less than 24 hours notice... I would be happy to do your hair in the future!" I replied: "I'm so sorry for the mix up. Even if it was 9 minutes late?" She responded: "Yes I'm sorry, it's not personal, it's my business policy." At that point, I decided to skip my work event and come in anyway. I arrived on time for my appointment at 5:30 and waited at the front door for over 30 minutes, messaging her at 5:23 saying: "Hi, I'm at the front door." I waited till a little past 6pm to knock on her door because she was with a client. When I was let in, she looked at me and said, "Who are you?" I explained I had a 5:30 appointment, and she said, "No you don't. You said you had an event so I canceled you." I tried to explain I never canceled -- I just asked if rescheduling was possible -- but she cut me off and said, "Nope, you have no appointment, and there's no refund." And started giggling with her client. I walked out shaking and in tears. Thankfully, another kind business owner in the building saw how distraught I was and comforted me. I understand having policies, but I've never been treated so coldly and unprofessionally. There was zero compassion or willingness to communicate. It was a horrible experience, and I wouldn't want anyone else to be treated like that. read more

I have been getting my haircut by Katherine at IV Hair Co. for the past 10 years for several reasons. First, Katherine is a professional of the highest quality and can provide any salon service you're looking for. For example, she recently bleached my hair to exactly the color and shade I was looking for (see pics). Most importantly for me, Katherine seems to sense what haircut or style I'm looking for, even though I don't really know how to describe it to her. I always leave the salon feeling like I got exactly the hairstyle I was hoping for. Second, Katherine doesn't just cut my hair; I feel like she's my personal stylist. She considers my natural hairstyle (e.g., how the curliness depends on length, where my hair naturally parts, or the shape of my head and hairline) to offer me suggestions on looks I didn't even know I might like. This is a review for those who are so so about their hair AND those who are very particular about their hair. It's going to be long but I'm in the particular category and there is so much good to say about my experience with Katherine and her salon. First off this is my first time seeing Katherine. She's at a new location and it is fantastic. She has her own private section which I love because not only is she a genius at what she does but she's a really good person and great conversationalist. She gave me tips and information about my hair which coming from an expert doesn't get any better for me. Now to the more important stuff (in my opinion). I have had a lot, like A LOT, of dissatisfying experiences getting my haircut and colored (as I mentioned I'm in the very particular category). The last hair stylist that I loved moved and it has been years since she has been replaced but she is now. The cut Katherine did is perfect and as a perfectionist I almost rarely get to say this. But seriously, look at the picture. The lines are like the stuff I see in the fashion magazine. She's gifted, a real artist. There's more. On to the color. I have chunks of gray around my temples. I haven't colored my hair since long before I started getting grays (since I almost destroyed it, I was coloring it so much). I don't know if I should start with the fact that I felt like Katherine put me in a time machine that sent me back to 10 years younger or that I have never seen such a natural looking coloring, at least done on my hair (and I've been in some of the top salons in town). She adds the color to her eye. I am very big on symmetry and from the results I can see so is she. She gives such care however and detail that I feel like my hair was her canvas again, true artists like a masterpiece. She got the most problematic areas of my grays while keeping in mind the whole picture (my entire head of hair). She met a bar that was incredibly high. Actually she exceeded it with the coloring (I mean she has many different tools to achieve this and get it exact, and I mean exact. So long story long, if you would like to go somewhere where you could completely put yourself in the hairdressers hands and be pleasantly surprised, you're feeling like you would like to shave some years off your looks, you could use a pick-me-up or basically anything, Katherine will spoil you I feel safe to say, no matter who you've seen before or what your needs are. read more

I went to Katherine bc I needed someone who was experienced with color. She was so knowledgeable and took the time to listen and understand what I was looking for. She gave me a fresh cut and color corrected my hair which had been previously over-lightened by a stylist at a different salon. She even gave my hair some extra TLC with an elasticity treatment since it had sustained some damage from the over-lightening elsewhere. My hair looks and feels so much better! I've been to IV Hair Company twice-the first to get a haircut and the second to get a haircolor service; both times were incredible experiences!! Haircut: So I'm usually the type of person that gets haircuts at Supercuts because it's cheaper, but it had been a year since I got a haircut and I didn't want to go to Supercuts again because I usually leave disappointed. I usually just ask for a trim or to cut off at most 3 inches, but every-time I've gone, they've always cut way more off. So I thought I'd give IV Hair Company a try and honestly it was amazing! Katherine was able to cut off all my split ends without cutting too much hair off and I was really impressed how she was able to do that. She even gave me shampoo, conditioner, and hair oil samples that would work with my hair. Hair Color (foilayage): After the haircut I knew I wanted to try this place out again. I was bored with my plain, black hair and wanted to get highlights. I got a free consultation and sent Katherine pictures of what I was thinking of doing. Finally, on the day we were going to color my hair, Katherine did so without any bullshit-I've gotten my hair colored at different salons before but they would always split it into two-three sessions (since I have black hair) and overcharge me for a mediocre job, but Katherine was able to get my hair to lift (lighten) all at one session without doing too much damage to my hair. She also gave me so much advice and explained the entire process. I credit this to the fact that she really knows what she's doing as she's taken so many hair/beauty classes. I have been a member of Katherine's community since the early John Pheiffer era. Since Ms. Pepe has fully taken over the business, I have marveled at her presence in the IV and UCSB civic world. She hires students, prepares faculty and staff for big events, lends her enthusiams to her fellow entrepreneurs in the neighborhood, and employees some excellent professionals. I don't know how she does it. I stopped by this week with a very unusual request. Some medical treatments involving a fancy radiation machine have left me with a very high neckline. I had no idea how to incorporate this extreme "fade" into my haircut. Katerine immediate came up with a fix and my wife and daughters approve of the excellent work she did. I have learned that Katherine and her team are busy even during the summer and that they have a growing number of clients who trust them with the exacting work of hair coloring and other challenging services. Here's my advice to the greater Goleta and Santa Barbara community; just as I advocate for food and drink in Isla Vista (we were the funk zone for nearly 50 years before the funk zone); take a half-day off from work, spend time at IV Hair getting yourself made beautiful, then dine at one of the dozens of IV restaurants. Katherine has been doing my cuts and color on and off for the past 10 years, and she's the only person I trust. Katherine was incredibly helpful and kind. She took lots of time to consult me about my hair and understand what I wanted.
