Look, I had a pretty lame experience here. This was my first time at a Jon Alan Salon. Nowhere on the website does it indicate that this is a school/training environment, but it definitely is. I scheduled a trim and mini-highlight and it took over FIVE HOURS. My appointment was at 9am and I walked out of there after 2pm because my (very sweet) stylist has to wait for a "senior stylist" to check every single step of the process. My stylist wasn't comfortable actually doing any step of the cut or color. And that would be fine if the results were great, but my highlights are pretty bad--splotchy, too thick, weirdly placed--and the cut is...fine. It's hard to mess my hair up. The worst part, though, is they quoted me a price, then bleached my hair and took the foils off (so I'm sitting there with white stripes all over my head) and told me it would be an additional $30 for toner. That TONER wasn't included in a "mini-highlight." What? Are you telling me you just put bleach on people's hair and then send them out into the world and call that "highlights"? I can't stress enough how nice everyone was, but I would never go back here and I'm pretty disappointed. read more

I've moved all over the country for the last FOUR years but I'll only get my hair cut and styled here so I've made a habit of making an appointment at the salon every time I've come home to Nashville. Amanda's been my hair stylist for the last few years and she's done a phenomenal job. I feel like we've established a relationship where she fully understands what I'm expecting and goes beyond that to make sure I love the results. I'm also very low maintenance when it comes to my hair, I rarely style it with hot tools or use hair masks, but I appreciate that Amanda, or any of the other stylists for that matter, have not made me feel in any way embarrassed or uncomfortable when I've gone a little too long without getting a haircut. I've tried other Aveda salons in different cities and I was sorely disappointed in the way they cut my hair or just their overall attitude towards their clientele. The overall experience was awesome! Starting with the brief consultation to discuss todays service, followed by an awesome scalp, neck and shoulder massage. She took her time washing and conditioning my hair being careful not to get me wet. Cut and blowout turned out awesome. Location is not customer focused, do not recommend. I had my hair done here 3 times and I'd take a half day off work to come every 6 weeks as I live in a Nashville and my process takes a few hours. On my 4th time, I was running 10 minutes late (they have a 15 min grace period) so I called the front desk and the receptionist said no problem, see you soon. I showed up and my stylist came up and said she could only do half my hair! I was livid. Each trip was $300+, I've been a loyal customer, there were times I waited on my stylist and never complained, and I took a half day off work for this unprofessional response when I called in advance and was assured it wasn't an issue. Rachel's creative, willing to venture out of the box if you desire! I used to visit the Jon Alan in Bellevue, and loved my stylist Elan there! She went onti sinewhere else, and so I took a break from Jon Alan 'til the Groupon came 'round in the last year. The head massage - the first thing that happens in the chair at Jon Alan is a head massage by your hair stylist, with an Aveda oil. SO awesome. So worth a visit!! Really, even during my post-color shampoo, I went into a zone - the kind of peaceful feeling that one seems to so rarely have access to. Pricing is reasonable at Jon Alan. (I think if a place charges over $160 or so for full highlights and base color, it's too expensive.) I like Aveda salons, which this is. They are an Aveda salon - so their products are natural (ish) and smell great. They also sell Aveda products. Only downside? You're going to walk out with stuff. This salon is top notch in all levels. It is hard to find someone who knows how to accentuate your hair with a great cut and style. Christa is awesome and I feel lucky to have gotten her when my previous stylist changed locations. Such great energy and it is fun to get worked on, have interesting conversation and feel relaxed instead of seeing it as another task to cross off the list. Love her technique and eye for details. I had went in to get my hair dyed blonde. Coming in, my hair was majority black while the bottom ends were light to a previous dye. My stylist was Kenya Springs. I had told her I had previously dyed my hair a year ago and was looking to achieve a full blonde look. I had told her I didn't want to dye my roots and I was just looking to dye the rest. She had told me that it was very unlikely for the color to pick up on such dark hair and had showed me what my hair would look like. Fast forward, she finishes my hair - and my hair is three different colors (not even including my already black roots). As any normal person would be, I was furious. However I kept my calm and asked her to do something to it so she can make it one uniform color. She toned it out to be this really dark brown hair. And I still have random streaks on the top of my head. They charge me $165. I ask them why in the world would I pay such a price for a girl who clearly doesn't know how to work with another black girl's hair. All was fine until she decided to put her input in it. She talked to me as if I was the incompetent and crazy one. Not once did she apologize for messing up my hair. She even said my hair was three colors and not a single apology slipped out of her mouth. Instead she caught an attitude with me, trying to defend her pitiful work. If a hair stylist is incapable of working on a certain type of hair they should have vocalized it. On top of this, multiple stylists chimed in to add their opinions- as if they weren't completely biased. They kept saying the reason why I have to pay is because of the time and the product the stylist had to use.... not ONCE acknowledging that the QUALITY of service should be the MAIN priority of their costumers. They had offered me a redo that would occur the next day that would be "free" of charge completely dismissing the fact that my hair cannot go through another bleaching process without further damage. Clearly by this they realized that my hair was no where near to what it should have been. Also the fact that they kept restating that it would be "free" even though it's a redo process to fix their own mistakes! Kenya Springs was an ignorant stylist who couldn't own up to her mistake. So happy I was able to get a same-day appt. at this salon! I arrived a bit early and was immediately greeted by my stylist, Hayley (adorable...great personality and style). After what was one of the better consultations I've had, Hayley started the complimentary shoulder/scalp massage with the oil of my choice. That, along with another scalp massage during my shampoo put me in a blissful state. Hayley really took her time with my cut to make sure I received exactly what I was looking for. Went in for my first time last week and had a hair "trim" by Jena. I liked her very much and she did a great job on my hair. She gave me a tour of the salon, she listened to what I wanted done to my hair and then she had me smell several different oils and choose one I liked for my scalp massage. AAAGGGHHH, it felt so good. It was so relaxing. She then washed and conditioned my hair with a product for thin hair and then explained the benefits of the products to me later. She did a great job on the cut and blow dry and then even gave me a complimentary touch up on my makeup. I felt so pampered. Because Jena has only been there for 9 months, the charge for a haircut is the least expensive of all of them but I will definitely be going back to her. Jon Alan seems to never be able to keep their stylists around! Every time you go back, the stylist you used before is no longer there. The employees always seem very stressed or in a hurry. I have also heard from multiple people that the owners steal from their employees(not paying hourly employees for over time, taking away their commission for various reasons, unexplained fees or deductions taken from their paycheck, etc...). I have had some awesome haircuts and there are some great stylist that work there, just don't expect them to stick around for long! read more

I love this place. It is not snooty, nor is anyone pretentious or overly awesomely hipster cool cat. The receptionists are quick to help, schedule, and sell stuff. My stylist is just amazing. She listens, she cares about what I want, she's one of only a handful of stylists I've had who *got* my hair the first time she cut it. There are lots of lovely extras (a variety of drinks, massage, make-up touch-up) with whatever service you buy. For a Nashville area salon, it isn't too pricey, either. read more

I am brand new to Nashville. One of the most difficult parts about moving is finding someone that can cut your hair well. I have lived in several cities across the country and I've always started at Yelp to help me find a good salon. Today I found what appeared to be a great salon. The staff was friendly and when I walked in and saw that it was an all aveda salon, I thought it was going to be great. So I get a girl that is going to cut my hair. We sit down and I tell her what I want. I am pretty sure I still speak English. Then she gives a lackluster head massage to begin. Not very conversational and she starts cutting my hair with the clippers. Then we go to the sink and she washes my hair filling my ears with shampoo and drenching me with water that was too cold. Then back to the chair where she cuts and cuts and cuts and by the time it's over she has done nothing that I asked and I have a haircut for a month that I hate. Thankfully hair grows out. I should point out that when I called to set the appointment they told me the prices ranged from $25-$50 for a man's cut. I opted for the $25 and that is possibly why I got what I got. Maybe the moral of the story is don't take the newbies and get someone with some experience. They didn't charge me for the lovely experience. So guess the hair hunt continues next month... read more

I made an appt here for the first time, and said that I wanted my super blonde hair toned down to a honey blonde. Not too brassy yellow, and definitely not ash. This color took far, far too long and I walked out with ash blonde. Furthermore the price for a SINGLE color with no cut, or anything else was $150.00!!!!!! Are you freakin' kidding me! Those two $$ below the salon name above should be four $$$$. I moved here from Washington DC last year and these prices are higher than I ever paid there for a single color...and crappy color to boot. Wrong choice in salon. Being new to Nashville, this salon was recommended to me as I needed a good haircut and color since I had a few inches of outgrowth. The atmosphere was nice, very pampering, and when I left, I had half gray hair with blonde highlights and half brown hair with blonde highlights. The cut was even but certainly not flattering-and I left 200.00 lighter. The stylist not only didn't listen to me, she obviously didn't care much about whether I'd be coming back. This experience was a year ago, and bad enough that I spent a year box coloring my own hair until I found someone I could trust to fix the damage. From the looks of it - the reviews - Jon Elan knows how to style/cut women's hair but my experience is they can't cut men's hair. Nor do they listen to what you want in a cut or a style. For mens hair go anywhere but here. You will live to regret it if you go. Cordial staff - horrible cut and horrible would be a compliment at this point. I only went once - I won't go back. I received a terrific haircut from Jamie today. It was a first time visit for me. She gave me a quick tour of the salon and was not too pushy with selling products, although she did give me a thorough explanation of each product she used on my hair. I am just starting a new job, and I will definitely be investing in some product the next time I'm there. I loved the way the Aveda products work in my hair.
