Service was average. The hostess looked tired and didn't respond with a greeting when initially walked in the door. Was sat by the kitchen which was kind of noisy. The waiter was just good. He sold the menu really well, however the food was just average. I had the burger which was decent. My husband had the shrimp which was decent as well. My boyfriend and I chose to go to Redlands for our Friday night date night. Their steak rolls appetizer is my absolute favorite and what I was craving that night. Unfortunately, they've been booking up every night recently so we had to settle for a 745 pm dinner. The hosts spent 10 minutes looking for our reservation once we got there to check in. Upon arrival to our table we ordered the steak rolls as planned and I could hardly wait to enjoy my favorite appetizer. Shortly after our server returned to let us know they had sold out of the steak rolls...SOLD OUT? How as a steak house or what you brand yourselves to be do you sell out of an appetizer that contains your house specialty....STEAK?! Extremely frustrated we settled for the spinach con queso as we were very hungry. For nearly $14 I could have microwaved something better at home. Needless to say we left less than satisfied. Management has always been awful here, and the service and standard seems to continue to deteriorate here as well. read more

Food was good and so was the service, but this is not the J's I remember. They used to serve a large salad with a croissant that was out of this world. Now it is a much smaller salad and sour dough bread which they want to take from the table before you are finished. Our table was below an air conditioning duct which dripped water on us. I found this to be odd as I know they know about this problem because the last time I was here I was at the same table and the same thing happened. come on people you are going to eventually run your customers away. Went to J. Alexanders on Saturday night with my wife. The place was very busy, but we walked right in to a table. We were greeted shortly after sitting down and put our drink orders and appetizer order in. I ordered a glass of the house Cabernet and my wife ordered the Fleur de lis martini. As an appetizer we ordered the smoked salmon dip. The drinks and appetizer were at the table very quickly. The salmon dip was cold (intentionally), but I would have preferred it hot. After finishing our appetizers, we put the plates on the end of the table and a server (not ours) walked by, saw the dirty dishes and asked if she could take them away. That, in my opinion, is good service. My wife ordered the salmon (well done) and I ordered the steak and fries (med. rare). Our food came out quickly. Mine was perfectly cooked, but unfortunately my wife's salmon wasn't completely cooked through. This is the second time in a row that J. Alexanders has not thoroughly cooked her salmon. Definitely one of the best meals I have had in a while. Everyone at my table loved the food and the kids got mini etch-a-sketches and that kept them happy the entire time. We were sat right away at 5pm on a Saturday. Had the smoked salmon dip for an appetizer. It was phenomenal. Definitely something different and delicious! I got the Prime rib. It was cooked perfectly. The other half had the crab crusted NY strip, and his was superb as well. We were too stuffed to go for dessert, but I'd imagine that you can't go wrong. Our server was Sean. He was amazing. Our family has gone to J Alexander's for years, and have always had great service & food. This was our first visit since becoming Redlands Grill, and we were very disappointed. The hostess was less than pleasant to start off, and things were downhill from there. We went at an off peak time to avoid the crowds. It took 45 minutes to get our appetizer, and probably at least another 30 minutes to get our meals. We heard 3 major kitchen crashes, they sat us near the wait staff apparently on break & loud, and when we did get our meals, 2 of the 4 were cold and had to be sent back. The legendary carrot cake was hot & cold in spots. Never did a manager come & ask how our meal was. Based on this, we will not go back. read more

Although it sounds improbable, the server managed to be both inattentive and annoyed. Food was good as usual, but we're beginning to question whether it's worth it, particularly at premium prices. The honey buttered tender croissants are as good as any dessert, well, their carrot cake is pretty awesome too, but I treat those croissants as my dessert! My favorite dinner is the chicken milanese, around $16, a huge chicken cutlet, nice salad greens, and smashed potatoes, but recently asked for a vegetable substitute. I got the carrots, wowza! They were delicious! And I'm not a carrot fan! This meal came out on a large oval platter, there is PLENTY to eat, you are stuffed! And for $16! The food was great but this is a review about their service. 3 of us came here for dinner and the service we got was comical at best. Please send this crew back to Denny's or McDonalds, they're not fit for a steak-house. Someone at the table ordered a red wine, and we were given a white, waitress took it back, but we had to ask twice for the correct wine, while the rest of the polite party waited for the correct wine to be delivered for a toast. Our waitress was no where to be found so we had to ask someone passing by to check on our wine. We ordered an appetizer and 5+ minutes later she came to let us know that they were out of that app. Menus already gone so we ask her for a healthy-ish appetizer and she recommends a queso dip. Nice. Queso shows up (quite a while after our order due to the above situation) and 2 minutes later our salads appear thanks to a runner who literally just looks at the table, drops them off without a word or any eye contact with our party and awkwardly placed in the middle of the table since we had app plates in front of us. Awkward at best. Food arrives and it was good. These kids better brush up on their people and service skills. read more

Just got home from J. Alexanders. The food is always good and usually the service is good too, except for this evening. The servers were very poor at their jobs especially since there were 2 of them for our one table, according to the manager. We waited for 15 minutes for a server to come and get our drink order and had to get our own drinks several times. We saw our server 3 times. The manager was no help what so ever. He came by and told us a line of crap and never helped. Might as well have been at a buffet, I'm sure the buffet would have had better service. read more

Mediocre. If we're going to spend $150 on a meal, I want it to be something to remember. But this J. Alexander's is forgettable. The service was friendly and very attentive, almost too attentive if that's even possible. Our main server was overly friendly, a little dry; I'm not sure if he was new or just had a dry sense of humor. He seemed nervous and very scripted, so I tried to humor him to get him to relax a bit, but he didn't seem to get it. He didn't have any knowledge of the specials as to flavors or recommendations. The establishment was out of a specific mixed cocktail that my spouse ordered and out of a wine that I ordered; at the end of the meal I ordered a cappuccino, to which I was told "if the machine is working" (Oy, another fail).... We ordered the tenderloin steak rolls for an appetizer. Seriously it tasted like hamburger helper or hamburger gravy in a fried wonton. Very heavy starter. I ordered the Scottish salmon and husband ordered blue cheese by strip. They were good, cooked well, but nothing to rave about. We could have (and probably should have) went somewhere else to get a cheaper dinner on the same flavor scale. read more

Food was great and the wait staff was attentive. I had the prime rib sandwich and my wife had the vegetable plate. Overall pretty good and we will return. However, we had a couple of problems. It may have been our location in the bar area, but it was extremely cold. I asked the manager to turn the temperature up. However, it didn't make a difference so we skipped coffee and desert and went somewhere else for coffee. Next time, we will not sit in that area. The only other negative was my food order. I requested cole slaw rather than french fries. They promptly provided the cole slaw and that wasn't a big deal. We've been dining at J. Alexander's for years. Lately, we have been disappointed in the hostesses and their ability to seat parties, they present confusion with many people. As we sat waiting this past Friday, the hostess asked us if we were waiting for anyone, when we told her twice we were a party of two. We also were told 10-20 minutes and waited 45 minutes. Also as we sat there we noticed how the clientele's appearances have declined. This establishment used to be a place you could go dressed up nice and everyone in J's was also dressed up for an evening out. We witnessed everything from soccer players in pushed down tube socks and slip on sport sandals to someone in a bathing suit top with a shirt over and open with sport shorts on and flip flops. Why has this establishment declined? I'm all for J's/Redlands bringing back a dress code! The food was great, however the famous Alex's salad is slipping away, ours was mostly shredded cabbage, very disappointing. Hope our next visit isn't subpar! read more

You may not know it but this place is a chain restaurant. The menu choices are pretty good but i almost always order the prime rib. It melts in your mouth and is full of flavor. The staff is professional and it's just an all around great atmosphere for a special night out. The only item i wouldn't recommend is their cappuccino. Dayton, no thanks! I have been dealing with J.Alexander's in Franklin Tennessee for decades and have had nothing but outstanding service. From server to management, they've always gone the extra mile to make sure we were treated well. This review isn't about the Franklin J.Alexanders, it's about the J.Alexanders in Dayton Ohio...I have recently had an opportunity to take several employees from a local, nationally known company to the Dayton location and needed to book their side room. I spoke with Megan, who originally answered the phone, and Tory the manager. I was emailed a form that I needed to fill out in order to hold the room. I was told the form could be filled out on my iphone, as I was traveling. It couldn't. I then spoke with a nice young man who said Tory, the manager would call me to gather the information, she didn't. After several days of me calling to make sure the room was being held, I found out that the room had been booked. When I talked with Tory and voiced my concern, she couldn't have cared less. What a missed opportunity for a dozen or so local, influential, business people to experience a nice restaurant. I'm glad to be back in Tennessee! read more

Dad ordered a salad, I can't recall which but he seemed happy with it. My wife and mother-in-law spit an order of chicken fingers with macaroni sides. I had a chicken fingers platter myself with a side of fries and coleslaw. Everyone enjoyed and raved about the macaroni. We've been a fan of it for a while now, it was a hit again. We actually ordered another side of it during the meal. Chicken fingers were high quality and tasty. Coleslaw was average. Fries are usually very nice, but today they were cold and tough. Food arrived slow we all thought. Server was on top of drinks and refills. I've never had a bad experience with staff here. Its a regular visit I recommend for all occasions. Went to J Alexander's just before Christmas. We have been there often for a good meal. VERY disappointed this time. Had to wait 10 before the server found us then had to wait another 20 mins to get our drink. Salmon appetizer which we have had before was WAY salty and the house salad is different than it used to be. One patron complained that it was too dark so EVERYONE had to endure blinding lights over dinner. Don't know if its cost savings measures or what but definitely NOT worth the cost of drinks and dinner. Will probably give J Alexanders another chance but thats it... read more

There is not a week that goes by that I don't visit the Centerville J Alexander's Restaurant. Usually catching up with a friend or a business lunch. Either way I always pick J's. I love the menu and always like to try the weekly specials. Food never disappoints. Had a problem with my chicken once but the manager Tori took care of it and she could not have been nicer or more professional. I have loved J. Alexander's since I was little. For years, it had some of my favorite food of all time. Yet, as of the last year, I have ceased my patronage. There seems to be a number of management issues, chief among them that many of the managers seem to be borderline abusive to staff, with one female manager in particular screaming at waiters and the kitchen, which I have witnessed the last 3 times I have been. Secondly, portions and quality have decreased dramatically and in the last 12 months, 2 of my favorite menu items were mysteriously wiped off the menu despite being very popular (Huevos Rolls and Honey Croissant Rolls.) Considering the premium price, J. Alexander's is no longer competitive, especially considering the area competition targeting precisely the same demographic. I hope that instead of continuing down the troublesome path they have chosen that J. Alexander's has enough sense to rewind and reconsider some of their business moves. Until then, I will choose to remember them as they once were. read more
