Stopped in last night for a night cap. Noticed when I walked in that they have a humidor with several cigars available. Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy, so not a good evening for a cigar on the patio. The bar was crowded. Every seat at the bar was taken, so I waited about 5 minutes for a couple to leave. It seemed like everyone in there were locals, except me. I ordered the Old Fashioned and requested Bulleit Rye. The bartender said he usually uses regular Bulleit in their Old Fashioned. Carvers was an excellent host for my friend's wedding rehearsal dinner. Unfortunately, we got a little hung up practicing at the venue and arrived a tad later than our reservation, but Carvers was more than accommodating. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff were incredibly friendly. Everyone was pleased with our meals and the service was unmatched. Sometimes with large parties it can get chaotic and confusing, but you can tell the staff has been in this situation before and knew how to handle large parties without any snags. Highly recommend for any large group. read more

The food is probably a step above Longhorn and that's being generous. Maybe I was there on an off night but it just wasn't anything special. I ate at the bar, the bar tender never offered to take my drink order, she just brought me water and a specials list but not a regular menu. I ordered the ribeye au poive and got a regular ribeye, when I told the bartender that I ordered the au poiuve she asked me " what's au poiuve?" So I just ate the regular ribeye, also when I was ordering I asked about the veg, she told me carrots and peppers but was served green beans . It's very obvious that they are buying cheap meat and the chefs don't care about what they put out. I would not recommend Carvers and will not be back. read more

Every aspect of our dining experience was absolutely the tops. Ambiance is classic fine dining; the lights are very low giving a romantic and a high class feel. High overhead are small round ceiling lights throwing just enough illumination. The staff are obviously well trained and strongly focused on the customer's satisfaction. This was noted from the hostess through the busboy. We were served by a great pair of waiters, Andrew and Noah. They were well dressed, well groomed, articulate, helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable. They were gentlemanly. We started with the roasted Brie app which was an excellent first course. The warm melty cheese was perfectly accented with a spicy fruit chutney and chopped roasted garlic. It was just the right size for two. We came on a Thursday. First night of prime rib and we both went for it. So tender, so flavorful, it was herb crusted which only added to the taste sensation. I couldn't decide on raw or cream horseradish so I got both. Chose a Ceasar salad which includes on request a generous portion of anchovies, like a Caesar should. And no extra charge. On that subject, prices were definitely reasonable for this quality at a fine steak house. We glimpsed the bar on the way out, looked very appealing. Next time! Went here with brother who's been longtime fan. The darkness of interior took a couple minutes to adjust to but ok. Found the booth comfy. Server Amanda was friendly and helpful with choices. We both chose the prime rib and selected med rare over med at her suggestion but decided would go with the med well in future as could've cooked another few minutes to us. But it's rarely an easy choice for diners on the fence btw those two. I had to not the cut and quality were perfect, and liberal horseradish and au jus made it 5 star. I absolutely loved the classic wedge side and au gratin potatoes. We appreciated the mgr checking on us also. I disagree with other diners' comments that decor in need of redo or update. First off I've been here a few times and the food although over priced was usually good. Obviously we can all agree on what medium rare is and isn't lol! The service has always been good with one exception that was dealt with quickly. The ambiance was somewhat laid back but the lighting is really dark. Upon further inspection this place is filthy and run down. It really needs a good clean and remodel. Just remove the carpet and replace with hard flooring. The chairs in the bar area are extremely loose and feels as if my 220 pounds might be the tipping point for the one I was in originally to fall apart. I came here with my in-laws, and we had a charming time! We didn't choose the place but were still satisfied with the service and food. It was slow considering that we came on a weekend night. This made our experience much more contoured, and we could track down the server less than my in-laws said they usually had to when they visited here. We should consider that a win, but our server was fine and pleasant. He was attentive and gave great recommendations. Regarding dress attire, this place had white-cloth vibes, but the clientele was wearing jeans and t-shirts while others, like us, were dressed for the occasion. Anything is a go for here as long as you have the cash to spend to enjoy a dinner here. Prices are reasonable for what they are offering and the quality of food. Like I said previously, the food was good. My mother-in-law complained that her potatoes were too salty for her taste, but I feel like she says that most days. We did not have any issues with our potatoes or meat entrees. We liked everything we had. Overall, this place is decent. I could see where it could have better days than others, but I recommend that people enjoy it if they want a steakhouse to check out between Dayton and Middletown. read more

After waiting approximately 2 hours for our meals, we were informed after asking that there was "no bread!" The steaks and my chicken were very good, however, the salads were warm and tasteless. Came here for my boyfriend's birthday and we were not disappointed. We easily made a reservation via email and when we arrived we were seated right away. Our server was fantastic! I could not believe Carvers would serve turkey like that. I called the next day and spoke to an assistant manager as the manager wasn't there. He never returned my call. I attended this restaurant for a Birthday dinner on a Friday night. We were a pretty large group of 18 but we were very much aware of how important it was for our entire party to be on time otherwise we wouldn't be seated. We were reminded of this SEVERAL TIMES before our reservation. What we WEREN'T told is that when you have a larger group you get a smaller menu!!! This was very disappointing as most of us looked online and already knew what we wanted before arrival and NONE of the items we desired were on the condenses menu! We came to this same restaurant, with the same amount of people last summer and this was not the practice so I'm assuming it's a recent change. However it was definitely a change we should have been made aware of before arrival! We asked the manager if he could accommodate those of us who wanted to make selections from the regular menu as a courtesy since we weren't advised of the change, and he refused!!! He stated the condensed menu is to ensure we don't have a long wait for our food and to not congest the kitchen. Ha! Lies! We still waited over an hour for our food AND BREAD!! Once the bread arrived it was burnt and several meals were lukewarm! One of our guests asked why her rice was mushy and shrimp lukewarm and the servers response was "we can have it remade but it's the end of the night so it's probably not going to get much better than what you already have". I'm so disappointed!!! The ONLY reason why I give this restaurant 2 stars is because the cocktails were good. Too bad we didn't get a good meal to enjoy them with! The most expensive shrimp cocktail and martini I've ever had in Dayton Ohio. My bill was almost $50 and I never even ordered an entree because what I wanted wasn't on the condensed menu and the manager refused to accommodate! Carvers... please do better! read more

We have eaten there many times and about 10 years ago our service and the food really went downhill so we stopped going so this New Year's Eve I decided to give them another try. They set us down at a table and it was so sticky. We wanted to move. But they were too busy anyways I ordered a ribeye steak, crabcake and mac & cheese the steak was so chewy. I probably spit out a third of it too much gristle and the crabcake. I have better ones from Kroger's. Mac & cheese was decent. And had to send my wedge salad back because they dumped too much balsamic vinegar on it. Service was decent, but honestly too many good steakhouses around that you will get a fabulous steak so I am writing this place off. It was 200 bucks for two people and it was shame if the bill came to 50 bucks for two people. It was too much. And the place just looked dirty. They need to update the place. read more

Went to this steakhouse because it used to be good but haven't been for a few years. Wow, what a disappointment on every level! Our server treated us like she was at a diner, rushing around, not giving us much time or attention, the steaks were terrible-- this is a steakhouse ?? My friends all ordered ribeyes and they were stringy, tough to eat and cut and they were medium rare. My filet tips were tough, hard to cut, no flavor-- I sent them back. My French onion soup (which used to be one of carvers highlights) was lukewarm, hardly any cheese and dried onions on top. My sherried mushrooms came out on a plate, no flavor, lukewarm. The dessert our server recommended as the favorite-- a brownie was mediocre at best-- DLM killer brownies are better and it was $13! To top off the meal, the coffee served with dessert for the entire table was cold and obviously not fresh. Everyone sent that back and she did bring us fresh coffee. Very disappointing as this used to be a special occasion place and for the price of beef, shame on them for serving such awful food. We did complain to the server and she apologized and said she would let 'the back' know and we never had a manager visit or check in at all! There are way too many choices to ever need to visit here again-- not sure what happened to this place but it's definitely changed for the worse. Not a bad place for a steak if you're looking for a place to go that's a step up from outback or other chains. After double checking they had our reservation set (8 people right before Christmas) we show up and they had forgotten our reservation. Thankfully we were still able to be seated and enjoy our meal. Waiter was friendly but not suffocating and the timing of all the dishes was great. The restaurant itself is huge so each table had plenty of space to enjoy conversation without being to close to one another. Salads were fresh, entrees were prepared well and with great flavor. For the price it's not bad either. Definitely not the nicest steak restaurant in the area, but nice for something in between and not too over the top fancy. read more

If I could do a 4.5 I would. My husband and I have been multiple times over the past year or so and we always have good service and a nice time. I honestly can't figure out why it isn't more busy - except see my comments about the dire need of a refresh. Pros: Service is on-point. Menu items for the meat lovers or pescetarian. Vegetarians - I'm sorry, I didn't pay close attention this time - forgive me - I had lamb on the brain. Price is appropriate for serving and quality. It is a nice local option to the corporation options in the region. Cons: Honestly, Carvers, you are long overdue for a refresh. It is probably a good thing the dining area is dim / dark so you can gloss over the wear and tear. I'll detail more below if you're interested. Do not order a burger in the bar and expect it to come anything but well. Now for more of the details. 1. Check the hours. They're local and they don't necessarily keep the later hours that you might find at a larger-owned establishment. 2. If you like Lamb. Get the chops! They are perfect every time. I can't speak highly enough about them. 3. Steak - they do it right. I don't need all the accoutrement if a steak is good - and friends, it is good here. However, if the fancy swag is your jam they've got plenty of that too. 3. Hello French Onion Soup! Do yourself a favor and order it; trust me on this one. The surprise are the fried onions on top. While I didn't need it, they were a fancy addition that I enjoyed after the main attraction. I'd say this French Onion Soup may be my new favorite to Old Bag of Nails (Yes, I like their French Onion soup the best...until now!). 4. If you save room for dessert, they have some nice options - I have enjoyed cheesecake. 5. The wine list is varied with some very fancy selections and some reasonably priced too. 6. Black napkins. Thank you. Need I say more? The Refresh: Carvers, you're old and it is showing babe; you need a makeover, or a facelift. The carpet is well-worn and is due for a replacement. The booths fabric choices are from the 90s and the art on the walls is there to match. The tables have been well-cared for, but could use a sanding and a new coat of varnish. You've had some ceiling water damage and I'm noticing - keep the lights low. The bar has room for a stage but could overall be arranged in a more cozy aesthetic. Carvers I'm fallin' for you and I'd like you to be around for a while. I think a well-deserved upgrade might be the think that keeps you hanging around for the next 10 or so years! Friends, if you're trying to decide between this and the guy across the street, give Carvers a try. You can hang out with J next time. read more

We were hungry and dressed up after a funeral and decided to try since we never been. We were sat and greeted by our great waiter AJ. His knowledge of the food and drink menu was fabulous. My wife had the strawberry spritz and I had the cantera margarita. Both were awesome so I had three. The appetizers grilled Brie was very good but the Dante's inferno was a bit overdone. Drinks, Service, and Food were all one star at best at our local Dayton Carvers. Our fillets and prime rib were overcooked or undercooked for 4 out of 6 guests. Vegetables were raw, not blanched, but still raw. Service just didn't happen. We ordered wine, never came at all. Ordered a bourbon menu didn't get it till after our other drinks came and we reminded him we needed a bourbon menu for one of our guests. The drinks we did order were incorrect, not once but twice! Mid-meal we talked with Customer Service Manager who replaced our waiter with another. All was well until we left the restaurant and were ACCOSTED by the original waiter outside the door! I had to go back inside, as did my wife before me, and explain to the Greeters at the desk what was going on outside the door with their waiter, and they yelled at my wife and I. The Greeters yelled at us saying "You can't talk to our waiters like this!". Let me be crystal clear, I never said a single word to our waiter at all about his complete lack or service or accountability for getting everything so completely wrong. Turns out the Customer Service Manager told the waiter what I'd told her in confidence about the service we were getting. This must have set him off and was why he was for us to leave to have a "word" with me, which meant holding be from going to my car. We've eaten there for 26 years , and twice in the last 3 weeks. I can't recommend them anymore, they have consistently gone down hill and, the last several times, they seem to be unable to cook any meat to order. We're not going to take legal action against them or the waiter, but we sure could. We had a dozen witnesses. Carvers not only let the waiter accost one of their patrons, but the Greeters did nothing when it was brought to their attention as did the Customer Service Manager who put this all in motion, they all sat behind their desk and let it happen. Low lighting, great atmosphere. The two male bartenders on Saturday night were top notch. Had the portobello stuffed mushroom -DELICIOUS! Then a caesar salad and prime rib with mashed potatoes. Prime rib was just so so and potatoes were tasty but the consistency wasn't too good-pastey. We eat out every day and dine out regularly mainly because its just the 2 of us and we can't cook but like good food. My husband is a meat and potatoes fella .. I go for seafood when picking a protein. I'm not vegetarian or pescatarian completely. I know this is a steak place ... and frankly wasnt my choice. Its restaurant week ... I chose the night before and my hubby chose here the following night. We made reservations and were seated on time. The staff were polite. The place is a bit too dimly lit for my taste and the wood tables were annoying sticky .. likely the covid cleaners. They need to refinish or put glass top. It was offputting. We were not offered a restaurant week menu and it wasn't meant. My husband asked if they were doing restaurant week and he said yes but still never offered a restaurant week menu??. We both ordered .. ordered a shrimp cocktail to share.. I ordered ceasar salad, lump crab cakes and season veggie which were squash and zucchini. I'm not a potato fan and most of the side items are potatoes. My husband got the clam chowder, prime rib and shrimp and loaded baked potato. The shrimp cocktail was fantastic 5/5 but unfortunately that was the only thing that was the rest was a huge disappointment. The complimentary bread looked good but no flavor. His soup and my salad were ok. 2/5 The entrees were a big let down. I didnt like my crab cakes or soggy squash. The crab was covered in what I assume was a hollandaise sauce that ruined the entree. I scrapped as much as possible off and tried to make the best of the meal for his sake. I tasted it and didnt like so gave him 1 of the 2 crab cakes. He was having his own issues with his meal. His plate was .. like they poured melted butter over everything. The prime rib was very thin. He rescued the meat and potato and transferred it to the bread plate .. tossing the unwanted bread in the buttery slop. Had done the same to the sauce drowned crab cakes. I didnt like the meal at all .. it had prices like paragon or Flemings but wasnt that level. His meal came with a mini creme brulee which was 1/2 whip cream . He took a bite and said hed pass. I scraped off the whipped cream and had a few bites. A nice lady who I assume is the manager came by as we mentioned this was not great and she said she genuinely wanted to know ... he told her our dissatisfaction. She apologized and suggested we sign up online to come for birthday and anniversary. Didnt want to be rude and tell her this is definitely not someplace to go on special occasion. I and gave us a card for a free appetizer or dessert. That is very nice of her but I doubt we will be back. Too many restaurants we like .. for that price it should be at least good if not great. My husband felt nauseous the rest of the night and half the next day. Luckily we eat out alot if dining out was a rare occasion it would have been more tragic. We didnt have cocktails and the bill was 120 before tip. I literally would have preferred to stay home and eat cheese and crackers. At least it would have been good. So expect for the shrimp cocktail.. this was a big fail. read more

I never leave reviews, whether they're raving good or horrendously bad.....So for me to take the time to get on here to share my complete and utter shock at how awful Carvers was tonight is a lot!! It took us 2 1/2 hours to get food and one round of drinks. The waitress was complacement, never present and we waited a total of 25 minutes to pay our bill. When we asked to speak to a manager, the manager came completely defending everything and then ended his conversation with "What would you like me to do." The food was subpar , bones in the fish and when you wait 45 minutes to get anything that's been under the warmer it's not enjoyable. I have never been to a restaurant where both the waiter and the manager are good of customer service and never once tried to appease the customers. I will never go here again, even though I have a gift card for our anniversary and I refuse to use it!!! read more
