That's when I shared my experience with others. If there is an update to store policy that I am made aware of, I plan to go back to the Hy-Vee I used to love and update my review. On my last trip, I discovered this HyVee in Waverly will only price match one item per transaction. After choosing one item and leaving the others, had to check out at customer service. The assistant manager didn't know how to do it and came up with the wrong price. Left my entire cart and went to Fareway where they happily price matched HyVee. Fareway is now my go to grocery store in Waverly.

One nice thing about the store is they carry items from nearby bakery and a nearby tea room so there are some unique offerings. The prices are about average, maybe a tad higher than other stores, but it will worth the convenience of not having to drive back to Cedar Falls. My only criticism is whenever I have used the Chester Chicken deli portion of the store, it always seems like the employees think it is a chore to wait on me. Case in point, I was there with my dad to pick up some lunch for us, my brother and nephew today. We get there and make up our minds for what we want and ring the bell for service. There are two employees in the back that see us, but make us wait another 5 to 10 minutes before coming up to wait on us. Why couldn't one of the employees come up and take our order? It was nowhere near busy. Please Brothers, make sure your employees know that when the deli counter is not busy and there are more than 1 person in the deli that no customer should ever be kept waiting. This is a pretty standard Fareway. It's not nearly as big as the one in Independence, but I…read morecertainly don't always feel like driving 20 minutes to go to Indee. It's very clean, and it's a very well-taken-care-of store. They even do a great job of getting in some of the newer types of food products. The shelves are usually stocked, and while they don't have the variety a big-box store does, this is one of the few places in town to get a good selection of groceries. Okay, it's pretty much the only place in town, and it puts the grocery selection of K-mart or Shopko to shame. I haven't had any particular issue with things being regularly out-of-stock, and they seem to do a decent job of keeping the shelves stocked. Cashiers have always been nice, and they do a good job of customer management here. They'll call up more cashiers when the lines get long, and I've never waited more than a couple minutes to check-out. Very satisfactory in terms of most stores in Oelwein (and most stores, period. Very good line management) I still don't understand the aisle organization in the store, though. There's water on the far side with some groceries then there are some aisles of cleaning supplies, then we have aisles of cookies, and then refrigerated and then frozen. The aisle organization makes no sense, and despite shopping here regularly for over a year, I still have to look through nearly every aisle when I want to find something. Parking lot is nice. I've never had any issues parking or getting out of the parking lot. Unlike some of the other lots in town, this one isn't in disrepair or going to pop a tire from their potholes. This Fareway does NOT have a fresh bakery, but they do have some bakery items. They do have a full-service meat counter as well as some types of health foods (though not a lot) like almond milk or soy milk. There is no bicycle parking, but in hilarious Oelwein fashion, there is horse parking. Prices are pretty good. Not great, but not insanely high either. If you buy the items that are on the weekly sale (especially the front page of their ad), you can get stuff for cheaper than you could find in Waterloo or Cedar Falls. The fact that Fareway employees go out with the carts to load up your car drives me absolutely insane, though. I mean, insane. I'm sure some people really like it, though, but I'd rather just deal with it all myself. Final thoughts: I'm glad this is in Oelwein or I'd have nowhere decent to get groceries. It's a surprisingly great store for this area, and they've done a good job of taking care of the property and the stock. It's obvious that whoever runs this Fareway cares about presenting a decent appearance and isn't just relying on the "this is the only place people can go" factor. I enjoy shopping here (aside from the aisle organization).

A lot of the more "cultured" folks around here (okay, okay, my family - all of whom went away for…read morequite awhile and then came back, and so have had more than just a taste of "big city living") swear by Fareway. I didn't get a chance to shop at Fareway, but I went to Hy-Vee a few times over my last week's stay in Bassett, and I have to admit I was impressed. The Hy-Vee in Charles City is a pleasant mixture of old timey things and new fangled options. Walk in and glance to your right on any weekend morning, and you'll see covered dished filled with traditional breakfast items and tables filled with local "blue hairs" (my mother's term, I swear!) and various sprogs and offspring, all socializing to beat the band. Two steps further, and behind the deli case you may see an Asian guy (I don't know his name, my family didn't either, they just knew he was Asian) who can whip you up a fresh, delectable stir-fry while you wait. You could also get prepared deli foods at this counter, and while I didn't, I suspect the fare might be good. Further on, there is an enormous meat case where we picked up some very good house-made brats. They're sold by the pound, wrapped in greased brown paper, and could be behind the fresh meat case at any Whole Paycheck. Fresh? OMG. Fresh. And while we didn't buy beef, I watched as the butcher unloaded a styrofoam box laden with giant, perfect, sweetly bloody steaks from the Amana Colonies, which I've never seen at any yupscale Grocerie and Expensive Food Emporium anywhere. We're talkin' grass-fed, baby. I was also surprised at the cheese selection. While there were wedges that looked slightly past their prime (the market for Asiago and Parmeggiano Reggiano is still under-developed here), nothing wasn't saleable, and.... whoo. Fresh Maytag Blue! And a random Welsh sharp cheddar that knocked my socks off. A quite big selection. I was impressed. The rest of the store also yielded surprises. I found not just lemon curd but lime curd, soy milk, tahini, and other things I hadn't expected to see in a small town Iowa grocery store. And.... there was SORGHUM! Sorghum syrup is as old-timey Iowa as it gets, and I was afraid that all the gourmet modern options would have crowded its earthy, deep-flavored goodness off the shelves. But no, there it was, right by the pancake syrups. Hooray! Final note: in Iowa, you can get wine and liquor in a special section of the grocery store. We found lots of good beers and plenty of quite decent wines, including a New Zealand Riesling that was superb - and affordable. Whoever manages this Hy-Vee deserves kudos for keeping up-to-date AND keeping what's best of traditional things. That can't be easy. Very highly recommended.
