So being that I was in Salem I decided to stop in. It was great to see that they had fresh, leafy lettuce, mint, and radishes. There were some very good looking strawberries. But I passed on them in need of vegetables & herbs. If I'm not mistaken each item I bought was $ 1.00 it just over it. * They do NOT take credit cards... Cash or check only. And just so you know there is no ATM close by that I know of. Anyway, what I got for the amount I paid I feel was a real bargain for fresher produce than at the supermarket! I wish I lived closer... I would stop in 1-2 times a week!

While visiting today, my 4-year-old child tossed 5 apples into an apple bin. Instead of handling a minor toddler moment with basic customer service, the staff escalated the situation drastically. Employees called the police on my 4-year-old, claiming that throwing those 5 apples somehow damaged "$800 worth of apples" in the bin. To make matters worse, staff members were extremely rude and this employee in the pictures below of the "$800 bin of damaged apples" explicitly told me I should keep my child on a leash. My children are of color, and given the extreme hostility and ridiculous reaction to a 4-year-old, I strongly believe prejudice played a major role in how we were targeted. This was an extremely traumatic event for my young child, but I want to extend a sincere thank you to the Londonderry Police Department. The officers did a wonderful job de-escalating the situation and keeping my children's minds off the stress by engaging with them and handing out stickers of their K9, Zeuss. While I am deeply grateful for how well the police handled everything, Mack's Apples demonstrated unacceptable bias and hostility toward my family. Please think twice before supporting a business that treats children of color and local families this way.

Upon arriving, we saw all the beautiful Christmas trees for sale and were immediately greeted by a very nice young man who asked if we'd ever been there. He welcomed us to check out the store and that there was complimentary mulled cider, apples, and fresh-popped popcorn and coffee, and a whole sitting area to enjoy it in. We purchased their own Cryovacced beef and sausage, some fresh veggies, homemade baked goods, and some cider. The staff was AMAZINGLY friendly! As we were leaving, my children saw some very small broken Christmas tree twigs in the parking lot and wanted to take them home for the ride so they could smell the pine. Another young man called over to me and said he had a better piece for them than what we found on the ground and he gave them a large branch! It just made their day! Then, my daughter saw the horses and he invited us to go and look at them. It was such a gorgeous setting and we really enjoyed everything we purchased. The sausage is out of this world!!! I'd drive 5 hours just to purchase it again!

I'm going to chalk up our visit to someone having a bad day. As such, if we were dealing with the owner, perhaps she might work on her customer relations. If we were dealing with an employee, I feel the owners should know about it. My wife and I were driving through Derry and saw J&F. It looked quaint and adorable with all of the flowers and hanging baskets out front. We walked in and were ignored by the woman behind the register. We proceeded to grab a few items; a dozen eggs, a honeydew melon and a flank steak, and made our way to the register. A vendor was unloading homemade frozen Indian entrees. My wife was asking the vendor about them and stated she was going to grab a couple to try, when the woman at the register snapped, "you can't buy them... we haven't even priced them yet!" We then placed our three items on the counter in front of the clerk. She picked up the eggs (which we had obtained from the cooler) and said, "These eggs aren't for sale... I'll sell them to you, but they're not for sale". We asked why and she said, "They're the farmer's eggs." We asked what that meant and she said that the eggs were too big to fit in the container properly, so she didn't want to be responsible for breakage and so they were the farmer's eggs. We still didn't understand what she meant by "farmers eggs" and she barked, "It means we're out of eggs!" There was no warmth, no smile, no thank you. We bought three items, one of which she didn't want to sell... and were told we couldn't buy the Indian entrees (something, I'm sure, the vendor would be interested in knowing!). In short, the surly woman at the register needs to go... or learn how to put on a smile, even when she's not feeling it. With so many options for buying food around here; Hannafords, Shaws, Market Basket, Trader Joes, etc... and so many summer farm stands starting to hang their shingles... J&F shouldn't be cavalier about losing a single customer... or having that customer telling others about their bad experience. read more

Animals are amazing and friendly but unfortunately the staff working in the stand is uneducated on what their doing and don't know how to direct customers. If you have a problem with this farmer any touchy questions about the animals- don't address it! They will bully you for "trying to end their business". Staff is overall rude and honestly shouldn't be running their farm publicly because of the way they treat the public. read more

They have everything you need for staples from the garden along with things that are just nice to have. Their food selection is terrific. I especially like their "salsa in a basket", which is a strawberry quart basket filled with onion, tomato, jalapeno, cilantro and tomatillo. Fingerling potatoes are available here! There is a cooler in the back with locally sourced bacon, milk, and eggs along with Swampscott soda. Depending on the time of year, you can get cider donuts, pies, brownies, and bread. In the "nice to have" department, Barker's has a couple of offerings. There are bouquets of cut flowers which you can purchase for half the price of what you could get at a florist or supermarket. Or, better yet, you can go out to their flower garden and pick your own bouquet! Sometimes they have dried chili strings or dried flower arrangements which you can hang as home decor. As you ring up your purchase, don't forget to grab a bar of handmade soap. (I'm partial to the Voodoo Spice.) If you just feel the need to get in there and grow your own, Barker's also has a green house. You can pick up seedlings for most garden vegetables there. They offer a good selection of annuals and perennials, as well. Barker's is not open year round. Let's face it, it's New England and winter is a time to live off the preserves that you made during the summer and fall. When late spring rolls around, make sure you put Barker's as your first stop for food shopping and pick up good local food to keep you going.
