Stopped by to get some keys copied, ended up leaving happy! When I stepped into the store, I had walked in the middle of a conversation between the workers and some customers but I was immediately greeted and asked what I needed today. I said I needed some keys copied and was told the different options to choose from. I went with standard gold (but looking at their different varieties, I just might come back next time for a fancy printed one). The workers were super friendly and I definitely felt welcomed. You honestly can't beat the price they charge too & they work quick! As my keys were being made, I was able to pet and play with their "2nd best worker," Jackson. He was the sweetest doggo (as of today, he's 15 months), i wish i was able to stay and play with him more. As I was paying to leave, Jackson put his head on my foot. Would recommend this hardware store if you are looking for any merchandise for fixing up your house. I've been here once before long ago when I was needing to fix holes in my walls from horrible drilling & left with what I needed. Locally owned and owner operated, J&J Hardware is terrific. The owner or one of several long-time staff are very helpful and very patient. Their drawers of nuts, bolts, and screws is extensive - and they are very willing to help match a nut to a bolt or a bolt to nut. They help throughout the store, but that they are willing to think through a problem like matching a nut to bolt - a sale under 50 cents - gives an idea of how dedicated they are to helping out. My main reasons for buying there? 1. You cannot consistently match the service at the big box stores. 2. This is a small business with hard worker owner and staff in a real neighborhood service oriented business. There are not many left. 3. They are very willing to special order and to take the time to do that even for small orders. Small or large, I go there first and very rarely do I have to look further. read more

I came here to purchase a lamp light bulb. Idk the name who helped me but it was an older guy. He knew exactly where it was, lead the way and got it out for me. I asked if there's another one the same but dimmer. He advice I shouldn't change the bulb just because I want to, I should stick to what the lamp uses. Makes sense. read more

I've also ordered larger tools (dewalt weedeater) from them and had it in my hands in a day and was glad to support this neighborhood gem. Neighborhood gem! We were in town helping our daughter & her hubby get set up in their new home in the Ingelside neighborhood. Since I'm the project guy, I got to go and find some miscellaneous supplies. Rather than drive to Home Depot or Lowe's, I decided to walk to J&J Hardware on the off chance that they would have what I needed. Indeed they did. I found every item I was looking for. The store is jam packed with stuff, floor to ceiling, up and down every aisle. I brought my selections up to the front, and the cashier made a suggestion for an alternative, then walked me down the aisle to show me what he was talking about. I wound up buying both my original selection and his suggested item, and made good use of them. Wonderful to find a traditional, well-equipped, customer service-oriented hardware store! read more

Just came here to give the guys at J & J a shout-out. I'm glad to have this as my local hardware store. The owner and the guy at the check-out counter are always nice & willing to give me, a home-improvement noob, advice. They're fine with my dog coming in. I've found just about everything I need here, from wall plates to primer to texture spray to soil. They don't sell plants, but they have some plastic planters and nice cork mats for plants. read more

I had to go pick up mice deterrent, so I went to J&J's on Geneva. As I was entering the store, the man outside the front door asked if I needed any help, I said of course. He stopped what he was doing, showed me a new product that I didn't even know existed, I got that. He also walked me over to the section for what I was looking for, he has such a large selection of products. I was so in awe as to how many different products for catching mice, that I forgot the damn traps. I did purchase a few items though. Have to go back today to get the traps. WOW - this review is long overdue - I just visited another hardware store a few days ago and was very pleased with their service so wrote a 5 star review about them - then when I went back again found out they were related to Marvin, the owner of J & J Hardware - friendliness and helpfulness must run in the family / Until we moved out of his area went there constantly for all kinds of items - every time was greeted warmly by Marvin, his wife, daughters and other staff - he always gave great advice on many DYI topics - more than once in doing so I did not buy something but Marvin did not mind - he is that type of fellow Like the other relative's store the aisles were packed with merchandise - this usually ended with purchasing more useable items - anyway should have wrote this years ago but took them for granted - if I drive by in my future travels will definitely drop in if not to buy something then for sure to chit chat with 'Marvelous Marvin" - thanks again for many years of service / read more

This store is too small to have *everything* but it covers most of my needs. Most recently, I was searching for dust masks to bring north to the City of Santa Rosa disaster response staff who were already out of them only 24 hours after the first fire. I called ahead to a few other stores but was told they were out already. I happened to be passing this hardware store on my way to get my car to head up north and thought it was worth a shot. Lo and behold, I found exactly what I needed and when I explained the situation, the owner even gave me a 5% discount. Santa Rosa (who reimbursed me for the masks) thanks you! On other visits I've found gardening supplies, small goods like screws and hooks, and other miscellaneous DIY materials. Nice spot in my neighborhood-- wouldn't go out of my way to come here in case they don't have something, but worth a stop if it might save a longer trip elsewhere. read more

I am always blown away by the youngish, low-key staffer who seems to live in this store and to have a freakishly keen knowledge of all things hardware. Here's how it goes: 1. I walk in and ask the guy behind the counter for something random 2. He immediately nods and walks directly to the item 3. We talk about my project to make sure the item is a perfect match 4. A few witticisms are traded on the way back to the register 4. He charges me a totally fair price 5. I walk out smiling and ready to take on the world of D.I.Y. Popped in for a DIY project. Noticed an employee with a mask off the nose during COVID surges in the Excelsior District. I politely asked for him to cover his nose. He refused. I asked if he needed one that fits better since I could provide him with one. He was uninterested and said his nose doe no't need to be covered. Since he does not take the safety of the community seriously I will not be shopping there again. Such a shame. I can't risk getting my family sick. Other hardware stores require their employees to wear masks correctly. This one does not. I'll take my business elsewhere even after COVID passes. read more

We are very lucky in the way outer Mission that we have a hardware store, drugstore, and lots of great places to eat for cheap instead of five Starbucks and a Crate and Barrel. I will shop at J&J before I would ever go to Home Depot. The staff is very knowledgeable and they have almost anything you need for a quick repair or home project. For larger projects, they can get what you need within a day or so. I will always pick this store when given the chance. True, you might pay 25 cents less at Home Depot in Daly City, but it's going to cost you a lot more to drive there from S.F. and the personal service at this place makes the only slightly higher prices well worth it. read more

I dont wan't to hear any complaints that you can find light bulbs 10 cents cheaper at Home Depot, or need to buy a truck load of 2 x 4's with your nails. This is NOT a Big-Box hardware store. This is great local hardware store that everything you were looking for, and a few things that you forgot you needed. The staff is helpful and friendly. When you explain a problem / issue they understand what you need. Their inventory seems to be geared to the needs of the houses built in time of our neighborhood. This is the neighborhood hardware store and they're good for picking up little things like light bulbs, keys made, etc. I've been here a total for three times in the last year or so and well, the guy (shaved head, middle-aged) who manages the place have a habit of manslpanning everything. Maybe I look like I don't know what I'm talking about or looking for when I'm in the store, but please don't talk to me as if I don't have a clue of what I want, especially when I'm showing you the item I wanted a replacement for. And for someone who manages a hardware store, guy should know that picking up the right size does matter, so please spare me the "it's only x inches higher than what you want." read more

Everytime I need something for my DIY or maintenance at the house I go to either Lowe's or HD and they are either out of it or the floor personnel aren't much help, so then I go over to this store and not only do they have exactly what I want, but the proprietor knows exactly what it is I need and directs me to it, so I don't bother with L & HD but go directly here and get what I need. Geneva is a busy street but I can always find either meter parking or free curb spaces a couple of blocks away. This place and the proprietor are awesome, and old-fashioned like hardware store, shelves organized and full of everything I need. read more

They were really helpful when I wanted to buy some tools. Over a week or I bought 4 sockets from them. One of them turned out to be the wrong size so I brought it back to get a refund on *only one of them* and the owner hits me with a no return policy on tools citing it's a bad area etc etc and implies that I'm trying to rip him off. He was very dismissive saying "If you had a question you should have asked when you bought it" which is just a passive aggressive way of telling me to take a hike. To summarize: I buy four things, I keep three, I request a refund on one, so the owner implies that I'm trying to rip him off. I left the socket and receipt showing multiple purchases on the counter and will never go back there again. I'll just go to Cole Hardware where they treat customers with actual respect, and not just when they want something from you. read more

I stopped in this hardware store after buying some things at the Walgreens nearby. I needed a box of sheet metal screws and the girl at the counter told me where to find them. There were only three customers in the store including myself. There was an older Asian couple asking questions about something. An employee - a Middle Eastern guy in his thirties - was helping them and he kept turning around laughing and making faces at the girl at the counter. I heard him say that the item was two hundred dollars so the Asian couple wanted to buy an expensive item. The girl at the counter also thought something was funny because she was laughing as well. There was no reason for these two to behave the way they did. I paid for the sheet metal screws and walked out. I don't live in this neighborhood so there's no reason for me to ever set foot in this hardware store again. I want to make other potential customers aware of what I saw in J&J Hardware that day. read more

I've never been to J & J True Value... but I recently watched a pornographic movie from kink.com's "Public Disgrace" series that features a porn actress (Jesse Rodgers) in various stages of sexual intercourse shot all around this hardware store. You can see the name and address of the store on the front door at one point! They were doing all kinds of graphic things there... let's just say the hardware equipment (hammers, mop handles, door knobs) was used in every way imaginable, and some ways unimaginable. I wonder how much J & J got paid for the shoot... I hope they didn't return some of those tools back to the shelves! Only in San Francisco... read more

I had the exact same expierence as Russ B. Below. Mind you, I am female and an avid weekend dinner and building engineer. I don't look like I'm from the hood and I pretty much know what I'm talking about. I purchased some sink clips for my sink I was laying my new counter top and a hose for my counter top dishwasher i was connecting straight in to the water source. My initial visit was great. He was very helpful, but since my project was difficult because of odd parts I was hesitant to buy them. He told me, If I doesn't work out, just bring it back. I return on Thursday with the receipt and he treated me like a criminal. Counting out each sink clip and screw. He told her to charge me a restocking fee. I didn't care about the fee, and understand its a local business. However, he became rude and condescending when I was asking him about another project I was working on. He said that I needed to bring the air rator in. I had it in my hand, and he kept telling me it was not an air rator. When in fact it was! It just wasn't your typical air rator because it was from ikea! I told him he didn't have to talk to me that way and I told him he was very condescending. I couldn't believe how my experience was so night and day. The owner is truly unbelievable. So, my advice is shop here as long as you want to be charged double and know for sure that you won't have to return anything because you will end up meeting Dr. Jeckle/ Mr. Hyde. I just moved into a new place around Ingleside and Oceanview and realized the outlets were all 2 prong. That's the problem with moving into an old building without outdated electricity outlets I guess. Being a millennial, there was no way on Earth I would survive a night without power to my laptop so I googled the closest hardware store available. Luckily they said J and J Hardware store was my best bet, and sure enough it was. I called in to make sure they had 3 prong adapters and the lovely lady on the phone ensured me that had them in stock. Once I got there the place is exactly how you would imagine a small mom and pop hardware store would look like. The aisles were a bit cramped yet organized with everyday common items and tools. They didn't have any aisle signs so I simply asked the front cashier where I could find the 3 prong adapters and she quickly guided me on my way. This is truly an old fashioned neighborhood hardware store. Not huge, and inventory not enormous (and what do you expect on a dense city block!)-- but they make up for it in customer service and the time they spend with you making sure you get the right thing. I have been there for toilet flappers, paint, rollers, tools... and each time there was somebody who was (a) knowledgeable (b) patient to take the time to help. Even if you're just spending $10 they make you feel like a valuable customer. Mellow, friendly, helpful. I like checking here before making the slog out to Home Depot. read more
