I had a really amazing experience here at Ace Hardware located in the Richmond District in San Francisco. One of my lightbulbs (not a standard one) shorted out, and I was worried about finding the right replacement. Only about 3 minutes went by as I was looking at the vast selection of bulbs available, I was approached by an employee named Kenny, who asked if I needed any help. Kenny took the initiative to ask me questions about the bulb, helped me find the correct one, and gave me some great advice on installing the bulb and making sure I handled it correctly during the process. The thing that made the experience amazing, was Kenny took the initiative to help me, genuinely assisted me, and graciously made me feel taken care of and welcomed to the store! In this day and age, finding employees like Kenny seems very rare, and Ace Hardware is extremely lucky to have a brand ambassador like Kenny to continue building on its reputation and representation. It is small town feels in this overly stocked little shop. They attempt to cram just about everything you might need in every inch of interior space they have. Oftentimes, I'm redirected to the kitchen place a few doors down. Let me tell you, it is super weird for me to be told to just finish up my shopping a few doors down. Like, I haven't even paid for the item in my hand and they'll be all, "oh, just go to the kitchen place and pay for it there." I am not used to this level of trust! But perhaps I have that look of the type of person who would over-buy in a kitchen supply store. (It's my weakness!) The child easily finds things he can't live without and checkout is a breeze. I guess I went when "Kenny" wasn't there. I needed to take a piece of furniture apart that was held together with bolts with a head I didn't recognize. I picked out a multi-bit screwdriver with a bit that looked like it might fit, and I asked the guy at the counter if he could tell me if it would fit. I had one of the bolts with me. He wouldn't even look. He just said, "No." When I repeated my question, he said to ask the other guy. Well, I asked the other guy, and he also told me very rudely that no, he couldn't tell just by looking if it would fit or not. Why you so mad, bro? Anyway, I guess I just stood there, frozen in astonishment, so the guy, very visibly annoyed, grabbed the screwdriver in the package from my hand and stomped off toward some thin shelves that contained individual bits. He then made a big show of sighing and shaking his head while he tried different bits on my sample bolt until he found the right one. Then he thrust it at me, saying, "HERE! Jesus!" and he walked off in a huff. I mean, I could have done that. He could have been polite and said, "That's an Allen head, and you don't need a whole screwdriver. Right around this aisle, on the right, there's some thin drawers marked 'ALLEN WRENCHES' and you can find all sized there. Just see which one fits your bolt." Had that happened, five-star review. And if the owner is still "Jordan," please don't reply and say it was a "miscommunication." Either take ownership of your employees' bad attitude or don't, but gaslighting complaining customers is not the way to go. read more

Recently I needed to buy paints to renovate several rooms in my house. I went into the store ACE Hardware on 6122 Geary/25 Ave and went down to the paint department. The salesman met me and asked how he could help me. I told him that I needed paints for the renovation, but I didn't know exactly which ones. He asked me what exactly I needed to paint and said that they had everything I needed. Then he showed me the shelves with paints and said that I just needed to choose a color. He also gave me some advice on which paints I should use and how. During the renovation of my house, I did everything as he told me. Everything turned out very well. I've had good luck getting what I need here. Today, was helped by a man and he didn't have the part we needed. He said to go to location on clement and 3rd. I asked him to call to make sure they have it. His response was that by the time he would call and they would check, we could already be there. I wanted to write something about our visit to this particular Ace Hardware a couple weeks ago because we were very happy with the help we received. I and my family were painting walls of a room and a door and needed paint. I mistakingly thought I could just buy any white paint that is for walls. But I was lucky this guy Arnold was there that day because he seemed to be very knowledgeable about paint. He explained to me what options I actually had. I had no idea there were so many different types of paint. Glossy, matte, creamy, cool, warm etc; and I had no idea there were so many options only for white color. Very glad Arnold helped me and recommended what was best for our room and the door. The store itself is very nice and has so many products. You should make sure to check the basement level because it is a large space. read more

The male staff, especially a new guy I think, who would not give me his name didn't want to take me to where the 7 outlet surge protector outlets and then when he finally did, he got irritated at the various questions I was asking about the differences between them, yelled at me when I told him I was going to speak to his manager, (Jay) and told me he "didn't have to take my shit". Went into this hardware store after a LONG day at work. I'm an HVAC tech and I worked a 12 hour day today. I'm fairly good with plumbing, piping, etc., but I was trying to get parts to replace my kitchen faucet and was totally brain dead. I had an idea of what I needed, and expected the Ace people to have no idea what I was talking about. I asked JR. (Junior? J.R.?) for a 1/2 to 3/8 male to female reducer. To my surprise he said "yeah I got you" then gave me the correct part right away. I spoke with him for a few mins and he was super helpful. I left the store and then realized I needed some large fender washers. Came right back in and asked another employee (MJ/Michael?) to help me find the ones I needed. Immediate help and a professional attitude/knowledge. Thank you both sooo much for making my very long day much easier. I needed to fix a door hinge. I brought in the old one and also showed a picture. I was shown where the hinges were. The guy told me that was the only one. I got some screws to go with it and went home. Got home and quickly realized it was the wrong one. I also realized that I forgot to pay for it. So I returned and, gave back the unpaid hinge and asked to speak to someone else. This one showed me a totally different hinge. I then asked him to explain how it would look. He went to a door, opened it and showed me the hinge. Got it. Then as I turned away to go pay for it, he made some Snarky remark that he didn't have time to show me how to do it. When I heard that, I made a remark about how rude he was. He lost it and told me that I was crazy and he didn't need the bullshit. That was why we have contractors. I told him that was all I needed was to see the door. Not very good customer service. He was so impatient. This lasted less than 2 minutes. Clearly showing he had no patience. I wouldn't go in there unless you know what exactly what you need. They clearly are short on customer relations. The 1 Star was generous. read more

This has been my place since the pandemic started. First and foremost, Arnold (from the Ukraine, yet) and Kenny are super helpful. I now shop there exclusively for my hardware needs. Am so done with the nearby "big-box" store and the dismissive attitudes and incorrect information and being unable to find someone for help. Give me this store anytime. When I have a question, Kenny and Arnold are right there with helpful suggestions. They both problem-solved with me on two separate purchases.....That was sooooo helpful. What I like best is that when I ask where something is, they take me to the exact aisle and shelf instead of saying, "it's over there." I recommend this place now to everyone. read more

Standard Plumbing Ace Hardware is a solidly A-OK place to grab a plethora of plumbing, electric, appliance tools and accessories. I've been coming here for years for my last minute "fix it" items. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful, even when they are dealing with a barrage of customers who have endless questions and sometimes ridiculous requests. The only negative experience I've had at this Standard Plumbing location was yesterday, when I came in to have two keys made- receipt: (12/15/14 12:54 pm J******* 563 SALE). Got back to my house and NEITHER one of the keys the clerk made for me worked!!! Maybe it was an off day for this clerk (who also said that he couldn't make the 3rd key I wanted, even though we had a set made here last month) because all of the other guys who've made keys for me here were fine. For $3.58 it's not a big deal and not worth my time to drive all the way back to rectify this. I came in with my skates to pick up a something for the house and the man at the front desk started yelling at me. I get that it's probably a policy but rather than nicely asking me take off my skates he just started yelling at me. That I'm not welcome in the store and I said than can you please have someone help me? He continued yell at me harass me until the other employee came over to help. I decided to take them off and he was told me "OH THAT'S ALL I WANTED YOU TO DO!" So, I can walk in my socks....and that's safe? I told him I had been in before with my skates and he went crazy. This used to be my favorite Ace Hardware Store in all my other visits. I come here all the time! Love the regular guys . It's my local store & I treasured their help and humor but today there were all new faces, the vibe was different & eventually I felt that I had walked into a nightmare! It started with rudeness. As I paid, i I made a customer service suggestion at which I was smirked at. I asked if my suggestion was going to be considered. The clerk said that it didn't matter & he didn't care. I changed suggestion to complaint. A man who was nearby & eventually id'd himself as manager & owner started cussing & yelling at me to get out or he was going to make a citizens arrest when I mentioned complaint. It was out of control. It was unbelievable ! The "mgr" kept cussing and followed me as I walked out. He told me never to come again & that I would be arrested. He was disrespectful & a bully, I am still shaking... In my car, as we were getting ready to pull out, he came & took a picture of our car. It was a very scary & toxic event. It makes me very sad. I just heard about this incident recently. This store bullied my elderly non-English speaking father. He bought something and was given a broken bag. He asked for some tape for the broken bag and he was refused. They told him no bag and no tape here. Then when he tried to use the tape on the counter to fix it himself, the guy gruffly grabbed the tape back from my dad's hand and yelled at my dad. It broke my heart to hear about how horribly my father was treated here. I will never support this even if I have to go further to get my hardware and supplies. ** AVOID ** Beyond the worst!! I had been here the other day for a piece of plastic tubing. I got there just before closing and was a quarter short so they let me slide. The guy kept rushing me and standing way too close saying something about how he didn't want to pay overtime; he repeated this at least two times. I went back today to find a fitting for some hose and the same guy was behind the counter. The second I walked in he started talking about how I short changed them. I pointed out that they did make a profit on that transaction and he claimed they lost money. This was about a quarter! I was planning to pay the quarter before leaving. I went to where the tubing was and found a size that might fit. I asked (the same guy; looked like he was following me thru the store) if he could just give me a two inch piece and surprisingly he agreed. He then cut off a foot of the tubing and said it would be 55 cents. As I proceeded to the register he followed me chanting about how he has to pay his employees. I complained to the woman at the register that I was being charged for a supposedly donated piece of tubing. Of course he was right there and heard what I said. He then started to get angry; he told me to leave. I put the tubing down and I left but not before I turned as he came up behind me to (I don't know what). I warned him to not touch me as he pulled out his camera/phone to record. He stated that if I was in his store he could attack me physically if he wants to. He then went into a rant insulting me, my "dead mother" my children etc. The name calling escalated and I did throw some back as, at this point I too was pretty angry. So, I went to another hardware store to buy the tubing. It was also an Ace Hardware. They kicked me out saying the "general manager" had given them instructions to do so. I have rarely seen such a combination of insecurity, arrogance and power of authority taken to this level and hope to never see it again. JR is the best! I came in to get a really old gate lock rekeyed. I have been looking all over the city for a replacement for this lock and have been quoted around $200 from multiple stores. One look at my lock and JR said he can rekey it for $24.99. No one buys replacements anymore. Music to my ears! I really appreciated the honesty, the expertise and quick service, it only took him 5 mins! He saved me money as well. I have spoken to other staff in the store who are also friendly and helpful, each with their own expertise and knowledge. read more
