It's not always the cheapest option (if you're just looking for cleaning supplies check out Safeway) but it is comprehensive. Personally, I have always found their staff to be attentive and willing to answer my questions and tell me which products are quality for my budget. I've used their key copy service probably 3-4 times and I love that they sell the scrunchies and the colored key caps because my apartment building has so many keys for different things and I can color code them. read more

I've been coming to this store at least monthly for the past year. It has a ton of stuff despite its modest size, and where it really shines is in its staff. Everyone who I have interacted with in the store has been a big help and has a ton of knowledge for all sorts of situations. Danny in particular is often working when I come in and he is PHENOMENAL! I really appreciate his willingness to help and find the right tool, screw size, and even answer questions about typical home improvement topics. I love having this store in my neighborhood! I know in this digital age that online shopping provides convenience and sometimes lower prices, but I would much rather have my money go to a local business with kind and knowledgeable staff like the people here. read more

This store may feel a little small when you first walk in but have you seen downstairs? Every time I come here, the staff is so nice and helpful. And they can usually find exactly what you're looking for or have some suggestions. While they don't carry everything, the stuff they do have is priced reasonably well. Also, they usually have a healthy stock of sodastream canisters (both kinds) behind the counter so it's easy and quick for them to ring up. And I know the 2-door locking entrance may seem a little daunting and strange at first but it is market street in San Francisco so I appreciate the extra security measures. read more

A high school/college student with zero customer service skills, a blank stare, like a terrified mannequin that's afraid of engagement, who spent their life so far only engaging with screens, not actual people. Unfortunately, while the actual workers in the store are super kind and helpful, their "security" left me feeling incredibly uncomfortable. The first thing that happens when you get into the store is sealed double doors which doesn't feel great in the case of an emergency. Or in general. You must be buzzed in. I wonder in what case (or appearance) I would not be buzzed in? Second thing that happens is that security interrogates you about why you are there. I was just there to get a key cut but wanted to browse in case I needed household items, etc. No browsing possible here. Thus, fewer dollars spent here. I try to support this business over Cliff's at times due to some political ties that Cliff's has; also, that the store employs a lot of queer, nb, trans, lesbian folk. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Manager as well as employees are disrespectful toward customers. I bought two items to instal a new shower head, they sold me the wrong items then when I went to return them the next day with receipt in hand they did not wanted to give me a refund they wanted to force me to buy something else. When I told them that I wasn't going buy anything that I wanted my refund the manager and the blond lady in the front told me that I wasn't welcome there and that I was an asshole for wanting my money back. I took the items, my receipt and called my bank and file a claim, bank gave me my money back and processed a chargeback against them. It's a shame when your neighborhood store won't accept a return after the 30 day policy. I explained that I recently lost my job and couldn't move into the new room I planned on moving to and didn't need the items I purchased but the manager stood behind the policy. Having been a retail manager in the past I know that there are exceptions to the rules and building relationships with the neighborhood is important. I'm not saying don't shop here they have a great selection but if you need to return anything make sure you do it in a timely manner. I won't shop here though. read more

This place is actually an Ace Hardware, I'm not sure why it shows up as Handy Handyman Hardware. The staff here were super friendly! I came here because I wanted to get into woodworking, and I wanted to find a rubber mallet. I also wanted to find soft wood (because apparently that's easier for carving), and they didn't have any of that but they were really helpful for pointing me to Blick's Art supply shop. This was actually really helpful for me because I was really confused as to where to find this and had gone to a couple other hardware stores beforehand without much success. The place is pretty tight though, the aisles seemed like they could barely fit two people. But the staff are definitely really friendly! read more

All in all, a nice little hardware store. It's packed to the gills, so you'd be surprised at the selection here. My only complaint is that it's pretty darn cramped, so if there are more than a handful of customers, it can feel crowded pretty quickly. Also, the checkout line can take a while to get through (especially if there are a number of people getting keys copied, as was the case on my recent visit there). Other than that, the staff are friendly and helpful enough. A useful place to have in the neighborhood. read more

It's nice to have a hardware store in the neighborhood, but the staff at this place is bottom of the barrel (and constantly turning over). It seems to be worse since covid. It's fine if you know what you need and where it is in their store, but otherwise you're on your own. I recently went to get a new bathtub mat, and the guy did not know what I was talking about! I was like, the rubber mat you put in your bathtub to prevent slipping? He had to ask his colleague...he had never heard of it. The colleague knew what I was looking for, but said they didn't carry them (which dumbfounded me). On my way out, I randomly saw them and they had quite a selection. When I pointed them out to the two employees, they honestly could not have cared less. Next time, I stopped in to find out if they mix paint, and the young woman at the register said she didn't know and then went back to her conversation with her coworker. It's like, are you going to find out for me or is the conversation over now? Just the absolute worst customer service attitudes. The employees are now mostly very young (with big Gen Z attitude), clueless about the merchandise, and constantly turning over -- it's a revolving door. The really knowledgeable adults that used to work there are long gone. No more "Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks," that's for sure. Now the place has gotten very unfriendly on top of everything else -- you have to be buzzed into the store as if it's Tiffany's -- and once inside, you're accosted by a "greeter" whose primary function seems to be interrogating you but not helping you in any way. It really feels like a no-adult-in-charge situation at the registers. The whole front area is a clusterf___. No area to properly queue, unsafely crowded, checkers expected to also make keys and such, and there seems to be some kind of problem every single time (price wrong or missing, registers down, payment system down, etc.). Moreover, this place just sorely needs an engaged store manager. My partner and I increasingly find ourselves just walking on over to Cliff's instead. read more

Normally, I don't take the time to write positive reviews but I had such a positive experience with the staff here. The condo that I'm renting has a really weirdly shaped light bulb. All of the staff helped me figure out which light bulb I needed and were extremely patient. I also needed to replace the battery for my garage opener and they helped me with it as I was struggling as well and even helped me find an appropriate screw when I dropped in the floor. I will definitely be returning and purchasing from here again. read more

Their key copying service is really affordable, fraction of the price of the KeyMe kiosks in Safeway and they take card which is a bit more convenient than the locksmith in the mission. The quality of keys they use is really good. The aisles are a bit narrow so it's harder to socially distance, but seems well stocked with everything you may need. And I can truly appreciate that it must be really frustrating for them to always have thieves going in and out stealing from them. But I'm just not comfortable going into a store where the door is locked from the inside and you have to wait in basically a cage for the cashier to press a button to let you OUT. I really, really tried to support this hardware store. Over the course of a couple of months, I purchased many items for a project. The staff was always kind and courteous. The last straw was yesterday, I entered and asked where I can locate an item, which the staff politely directed me to the section. Not a minute later the "older woman" was standing at the top of the stairs asking if I need help in stern condescending manner. At first I didn't think about, then I felt I was racially profiled. I left without a purchase and extremely angry. I've had my share of profiling, but this is San Francisco and your store is in a very diverse neighborhood. As I was sleuthing the internet yesterday for vermiculite, the cheapest wasn't at Ace Hardware but more convenient than Home Depot. Today I walked into the store on market street at church in the quasi Castro, after having to wait in line behind a woman who had to punch in a code to enter the store (presumably to curb or curtail recent rampant thievery). I walked into the store, carrying my cloth bag to use to put my purchases in it and as not to pollute the planet with plastic or deforest another wooded area. The young man behind the counter gave me a once-over and fixated on my semi empty cloth bag. Admittedly, I'd bought a bottle of water at Safeway across the street. the young man abruptly turned away from me as I shot him a look of distaste, so i asked an older female worker (later I overheard and learned her name was Carol) where I might could find the vermiculite. She said downstairs and to my left. As I descended the stairs, thank Buddha I wasn't in a wheel chair as the store is so cramped, the aisles are narrow and isn't ADA compliant, I met the young man again who was about to carry large blue shopping baskets upstairs. In the basement now, I asked him where the vermiculite was. He looked blankly at me and didn't respond but asked me what it was. I said chicken shit in an 8 qt bag for $7.99, according to Ace hardware's website. Another shopper standing next to the young man said it was for gardening, so he asked his older female coworker Carol where it was. as she'd followed me downstairs, she stated It was in the corner but without a price, so I showed her the price on ace's website. I brought it upstairs to the register where the young man was standing again. The price $8.68 with tax was the same as the website's price, and i wanted to pay the $.68 cents in exact coin and the $8 with my debit card. he looked dumbfounded again and called Carol to help him. I handed her the exact $.68 in change but she wasn't able to give me the $.68 credit without charging my debit card the full $8.68. in exasperation, I said forget the change, I'll use only my card. Then another middle aged man, curiously who looked like the young man' father or maybe brother, came to help Carol process my payment and assured me I would only be debited $8 from my card. I said a bit too loudly, "ain't technology grand?!" With the receipt in hand, given to me and by the assured middle aged man I was only charged $8, I left less than bemused but determined not to return anytime soon. Not only did I sense the young man tried to profile and intimidate me as I walked into the store with my cloth bag - admittedly I wore a dark blue knit cap and the requisite mask and probably look like a thief - as the pandemic isn't over (the CDC mandates masks again in close public spaces, especially in non compliant ADA and cramped stores) - and left the store with my 8 qt bag of poultry poop never to return. The last time I bought something there, over three years ago, it was hella expensive which they had to special order. I've found the same item much cheaper, almost half as expensive, in the Mission. Ace used to be the place with the helpful hardware man. Now this store's workers know less about its stock and are even less knowledgeable about how to run its own cash register with the alleged owner's help. Smdh. read more

This review is for key copying-- TERRIBLE. I came here to copy two sets of keys. First set the store did not have anymore of, so since I didn't want to buy customized ones (sports themed ones for more $) that was a fail. The even bigger fail was the other set. The store made me 3 copies of the other key, and NONE OF THEM WORKED. Taking a closer look you could see the shotty copy job. Waste of my time and money + service was also shitty. read more

I've lived in this neighborhood for 18 years, and I only go here when I'm too lazy to walk the few extra blocks to Cliff's. Just go to Cliff's, trust me! The customer service here is bizarrely bad. Cole Hardware and Discount Builders are also amazing. Those are my top choices for Hardware stores. The folks at Robert's in the Haight are also helpful. In all of those shops, people like their jobs. They like helping and they are knowledgable. That's pretty much the core of what you do when you work in a hardware store: you help people with little bits and doo dadas. I'm giving them 2 stars because they do a fairly good job at cramming lots of bits and doo dads in the relatively small (compared to other hardware stores in the city) shop. Time and time again, at this Ace, I have seen staff argue with customers and pop attitude or act clueless. Again, this is a trend that I've observed for almost two decades. Shame on my lazy ass for going back. I always regret it. So today, I warn you (and myself) in writing. Today, a customer complained that the staff was following him around the store. The clerk said, "That's because you look hella sketchy!" WHAT? Who says that to a customer!?! The guy didn't hear him and asked where the gaskets were. I took my item up to the register (a new doorstop) and returned the one I bought a few weeks ago that didn't fit. The clerk told me that "in the future, you won't be able to return things like this because you opened the package and there's a mark on the rubber that shows you used it." Then he refunded the product immediately. I'm confused --what is the return policy? If you can't open and try things, then there is no return policy. But they take things back even if they're not supposed to but they just warn/guilt you? I'm not shopping at a hardware store that won't accept returns. It's 2021, Ace, you're competing with ONLINE SHOPPING. Wise up! Teach your crew some basic customer service. I am mostly writing this review for myself: stop shopping here, Self. Don't be so lazy. Spend the 5 extra minutes to get to Cliff's or Discount Builders or Cole Hardware. read more

I am a big fan of Ace Hardware but this location is a definite exception. I've gone into the store at least 5 times over the past couple of months and each time I have had a negative experience. The staff seems put off when asked any questions. They follow you around like they are suspicious you are going to steal from them. Multiple times I've asked if they carry a certain item and they say no but I find the item myself. A couple of days ago I went in with my girlfriend. She had her service dog with her in her arms and while we were standing waiting for tubing to be cut the dog barked once in a quick, non-disruptive manner. The employee cutting the tubing directed a comment to the dog stating "I have some duct tape with your name on it". It really upset my girlfriend because she has severe PTSD and anxiety from childhood trauma. She was upset for nearly a day because of the incident. I love Ace Hardware but staff at this location is consistently rude making it uncomfortable to be in there. I spend a lot of money at Ace Hardware but I will be spending it at another location from now on. read more

I love this Ace Hardware! The employees are incredibly friendly and helpful! Whenever you come in with a question, they're happy to point you in the right direction or show you exactly what you need. At one point I was building a build-at-home piece of furniture and thought I had ruined the whole thing, but I took in the piece that was causing me problems and one of their employees took it into their shop and fixed it for me! At that point I became a totally loyal customer who tries to buy all my household goods from here rather than on Amazon. read more
