I chose J&J Landscape over several other companies that provide similar services because of the positive reviews that I read on Yelp. They have been taking care of my landscaping for about 2 years. Their price is competitive with other companies that I contacted, perhaps just a bit more expensive. The requirement that they have when they provide service is that they perform three 'functions'. I have a very small area of grass and so I certainly do not need for them to mow this small area. The functions that they provide are mulching in the Spring, pruning and clean up during the summer and really throughout the year, and blowing the leaves in the fall. I really like the guys who come out to my home to do the work. The central problem with this company is that the supervision is inadequate, the training is poor and the communication between teams who come to your home is non-existent. Whenever I call the company, they are friendly and note down my preferences. Sometimes this info is communicated to the men who come to my home. Often it is not. When I see that the guys have arrived, they listen and do everything that I would want. But if not, then it just doesn't work. In addition, when they do have someone who knows what he's doing, how to take care of plants, the person leaves the company. The guys just do not understand landscaping or plants. This is where the severe lack of training is so obvious. It may be that my needs are different than many of their other customers, but the requests don't seem to be that complex. We hired J&J to hardscape our backyard. We had crappy grass growing there, uneven terrain, and general ugliness back there. Cara came over for a consult first thing in the morning. We walked through what we wanted, and Cara provided us with a sketch of her ideas and thoughts on paver types, moving a water drain, and other items. We approved the plans with a minor modification, and they got right to work. The workers came over early each day to work, and were great. They were also very considerate of our neighbors. Some of the work generated a ton of dust, and our neighbor voiced concerns about it flying into her yard. They made adjustments to minimize the dust. Our neighbor even commented to us how great they were about it. About 2 weeks later, we have an amazing backyard. We've got the furniture back there, along with plants in the stone-walled garden. it looks fantastic, and we could not be happier. The staff were courteous and professional. The J&J team did a wonderful job, and completed the work in a very timely and professional manner. They completely re-leveled our backyard and had to deal with massive tree roots in 90+ degree weather. It was a massive undertaking and I commend the team for their dedication. The sod installation was great, and our yard looks substantially better than before. Recently bought a property that needed major landscaping work. Asked 3 companies to bid on the project. James who is the president of the company came by himself to take a look around and give me an estimate. I was a bit concern that the president of the company is coming to take a look at the job wondering how big the company might be, but to my surprise when they started the work, it was an army of people and equipment and they did the job on time, very clean and very professional. James gave me a proposal first and then on his own asked if he could come back and take a second look around the property to see if he can save me some money and he actually did. This was not because I told him he was more expensive or anything, it was just second look at the job as he had ideas to save me time and money. the first project was done on time and since then I have done three other projects with him all of which have been done on time and with great care. This company is AMAZING. I only hope I can write a review glowing enough to match their work. Every person on the J&J team from management to design to labor is hardworking, professional, and highly skilled. They ensured that each step along the way in the process went smoothly and correctly. We live in Old Town, Alexandria, and needed multiple things done to our front yard. Water was getting in our window wells into our kitchen, so we needed our yard re-graded and a new window well design. We also wanted a new walkway and steps and a retaining wall to be equal parts aesthetically pleasing and functional. After meeting with and getting proposals from 10+ other reputable and highly-rated companies, we decided that the team at J&J was the best. Before they started any work, Luis met with us to get a feel for what we wanted so he could work on a design. Luis was so patient with me - listening to every single request and coming up with multiple designs that would match my many particular requests. After talking with him, he really got a sense of what I wanted and was able to sketch a plan that we were so happy with. Surprisingly, J&J was the ONLY company that we interviewed that presented us with design sketches. Being a visual person, the sketches were extremely helpful in visualizing a new yard. They also matched the price of another company that is renowned in Alexandria, even though their plan included more work. After the design was finalized, the labor team came out and started working. This involved lots of precarious digging around a gas line (during a heat wave, in the direct sun), only to find that the drain that they were going to install from the window well to the sidewalk would not work. Unforeseen things like that can happen during the process, but Luis improvised and tweaked the plan and the work continued seamlessly with collaboration from the labor team. Mario was the main worker - HE IS INCREDIBLE. I can't say enough good things about this guy... he is probably one of the hardest workers and most skilled in his craft that I have ever met in my life. He was out there every single morning, working for hours upon hours, dealing with my 2 kids jumping around and in his way, creating the most beautiful wall and patio. He truly is an artist and a master in his trade. I felt completely comfortable letting him take the reigns and make design changes as needed (which is atypical for me because I am very particular!). Bottom line is he knows what he is doing and does it extremely well. The project took about 3 weeks from start to finish. They cleaned up everything, every day. I wish they put a sign with their company name in our yard during the work because everyone who walked by complimented our yard and wanted to know the name of the company. Even now, months later, people are still commenting as they walk by and saying how awesome our yard and wall looks. Additionally, not only does it LOOK fabulous... but the design is flawless and not a drop of water got in our basement after Hurricane Joaquin and all the rain the other week! We are extremely pleased and give J&J our highest recommendation. 1year later update- everything is still great and no water comes near our basement . Our HOA has used this company for decades and the support provided is very good. The owner is responsive to all reasonable requests and goes out his way to support our Community's needs. Our lawns on Hidden Bridge Drive are maintained as well as any in Springfield and I have encountered others walking through the neighborhood compliment how great the neighborhood always looks. For that matter, a few years back we did approach some other companies to ensure we had the best deal, quotes were not only higher, but one of those competitors I walked the neighborhood with could not have been more complimentary about how well the neighborhood was maintained. The sincere concern for providing quality service is just as evident with the snow removal in the winter. J&J is as good as it gets. read more

Do not hire this landscaping company. Their standard of service has declined. First they did not show up to mow the lawn until prompted at my primary residence. Secondly they delayed the work 4 times at my boss's place of business and kept blaming the weather when in fact they just wanted to be paid upfront And kept putting me at the back of the line when I had been a loyal customer for years paying ahead of time or on time always. read more

Hired J&J to do all my lawn fertilization. Price was very good on quote. Due to the rains I didn't receive my 1st treatment until May. Lawn overall as looked worse than recent years when I have fertilized myself. My biggest issue is with the communication of services. Out of 3 treatments that was supposedly done, only once was a sign left on our lawn saying the service was completed. I have called the owner James and the front office many times inquiring if and when my service as upcoming, which is something I feel i should not do repeatedly as a customer. I have other yard services (mosquito treatment) that always notify us before and after via txt and email that a service is upcoming and completed. To be fair, James has always been responsive and assured me that signs were left each time an application was done, but this is something I wouldn't lie about. I voiced my concerns and he did offer me a free application as my lawn isn't looking as good, but I declined and simply wanted to terminate any future applications. He agreed and is processing a refund of my unscheduled treatments. I expected more but at least James was trying to work with me, which I appreciate. However, the above issues was more trouble than it was worth in my opinion and am going to look elsewhere for these services. read more

Their administrative staff is completely incompetent and can't get billing straight to save their lives - I had to do their accountant work for them. Find someone else to manage your lawn to avoid the hassle - even the president of the company admits they were jacked-up (and they continue to be even after the contract was cancelled.....still getting invoices!). read more

J&J were great to work with. Their team was thoroughly professional and knowledgable. We had them re-landscape our front and back yards and put down new sod in certain areas. They finished on-time and on-budget. When it turned out that they had extra sod, they even asked if i wanted more put down at no cost to me. Which of course I did! I had one of their guys come out yesterday to give me a quote on some work. I talked to him and went over what I was looking to have done. Part of it was fixing the flower beds and then extending the one around the side of the house adding mulch to the whole side of the house. I got the quote today via email. Nothing on the quote about mulch. I emailed the guy and asked about it. He replied later with a new quote and listed it as mulch flowerbeds (front of house only). So what part of I want mulch around the side of the house and I want the one flowerbed fixed (graded along with the yard) was difficult. The guy didn't take any measurements that I saw and didn't take any notes. I watched him pull up so it wasn't like he took measurements before I got outside. Not sure if that is what they are calling customer service these days but I will be looking for someone else to do the work. ******** Reply to their reply...Of course you didn't do any work at my house. You sent an estimate that didn't include all the work we wanted done. When I asked about the added stuff you still didn't get it correct. There was no point in continuing with you as you were just throwing numbers around and still couldn't get the scope of work correct. I also really appreciate the emails (wish I had saved them) telling me how I HAD to go in and change my review. read more

Used J&J for a year to service our lawn. They did a great job! So good, that I hired them to remove a bunch of ivy and other plant matter, level the ground, and plant grass. It was about 1000 square feet or so. They misunderstood how much work was involved, and asked for more money, about 15% more. I gave it to them without complaint - the alternative was me doing it, and it was hard work. But it gave me pause. How can a company like this one not know how much work it would take to remove ivy and other plants? The real problems came, though, when they said they were "finished." There were lots of stones and debris left all over the place. It was a field of ivy, I had no idea that previous owners had left things there. The contract specifically said "debris removal," so I thought that sort of thing would be covered. They left a paper embedded in the soil, with grass seed sprinkled on top of it. There were obviously non-level portions of the ground, too. What was most annoying was the owner's attitude. He said "debris" referred to debris created during the work. That's NOT what the contract said. Rather than letting the customer be right, he argued back and forth with me. Eventually, he had his workers come and clean up the debris, but he made it very clear to me that "next time, you should understand what 'debris' means." Ha ha! The legal meaning of the word debris is not under question, and it means what I said it means - take a look in a law dictionary! If you want something to mean something else, just specify it in your contract. It's that simple. But he dismissed that advice out of hand, despite having a dissatisfied customer arguing with him on the phone and through email. They still get two stars instead of one, though, their work on the lawn was great. But coming back to a customer to ask for more money because you didn't understand how much work there was, followed by a crappy, incomplete job - and arguing with the customer on top of it - well, I can't recommend you hire them for anything other than mowing & blowing... read more

We have been extremely dissatisfied with the ineptitude displayed by J&J's landscaping service. The crew is rude and either unskilled or they simply don't care. They regularly miss areas of grass when mowing, constantly damage plants when they blow out gardens, and leave trash and bottles behind. Look for a different service if you want the job done right. read more

We had a significant drainage issues due to new construction and low lying areas. J&J helped us create a solution that was beautiful, effective and reasonable. They installed a large (long) dry creek bed that worked with the existing land contour (not a linear eyesore) with natural plantings and a few drain boxes. Cara (our designer and manager) was awesome at not over engineering and staying within our budget. The crew that did the installation did excellent work; they were professional and friendly. We will be using them for our next phase. We did get competitive bids for this project. I HIGHLY recommend J&J and Cara. read more

A neighborhood yard got cited recently after WEEKS of neglect, and this crew came out an delivered. Not sure it would be worth having my yard quoted since I'm all the way out here and they are in Farifax, but they did a really, really good job. My experience with J&J Landscape was very unfavorable. Their crews appear to be low-skilled, evidenced by the clumps of grass left on my lawn, clippings blown into my mulched beds and the poor trimming and edging around my sidewalks backyard areas. When I raised these issues with their leadership, I was met with rudeness, defensiveness, hostility and ultimately, dismissal. While they boast a "five star rating", they do not deliver such level of service, especially when dealing with clients, in my experience, and I caution others who might consider using this lawn care service. read more

Dealing with J&J years ago was the most unpleasant experience I have ever had in 40 years working with landscape companies. If you do happen to get the same mowing crew twice, simple observation will show how untrained and unskilled they are in even the most basic elements of lawn care. My lawn was chewed up by their mowers front and back after each time they cut it. Weeds persisted even when they claim to be treated. They rarely edged the sidewalk and bed areas, and when they did on rare occasion, the grass was blown up on my back porch, beds and walkways with each visit. They have very poor expertise in weed treatment, turf maintenance and sod care, checking boxes rather than paging close attention to the soil and turf quality. Exceptionally defensive, dishonest and belligerent company owner. Reconsider strongly before hiring this poorly skilled, amateur and unprofessional landscape company. There are too many professional landscapers out there to bother with this one. read more

This was an outstanding experience from beginning to end. We just moved into a home that had not been owner occupied (was a rental) for over a year. During that time I think the grass had been mowed but not alot else had been done. The yard needed a lot of work to get to where we wanted it. J&J responded promptly to our request for an estimate. James showed up to inspect the yard (in order to estimate) on time and offered guidance and recommendations regarding what could and could not be done. They were very easy to work with administratively (payments, scheduling, etc.). They performed the work within the window of time promised (with excellent communication along the way regarding how weather was affecting scheduling...there was lots of rain leading up to our job). The work was done efficiently and at a VERY HIGH level of quality. We are extremely happy with how our new yard looks. They also offered (at my request) their maintenance program (at a reasonable price). I declined and he didn't mention it again...no pushing or pressuring. After they finished I trimmed the shrubs and removed a bush that I decided needed to go. After I had done all this I realized I had no way to dispose of all the debris (oops!) so I called and asked how much it would cost to have some guys come out and take it away (and even offered to have them mow, etc. if that was necessary to make it cost effective for them). James said he would have some guys come the next day and take care of it, no charge (even though this would have been part of the maintenance service that I declined).
