I have been going there for years and was always happy. Recently I returned from vacation and went to get my nails done and have never had my nails look so horrible. Cut my nails so short my fingertips hurt and one nail broke within 3 days. Went back to get it repaired and was charged $8! When I said "how much?" the woman at the front desk said "get them all done and you won't have to pay that much!" She was not working three days before when I originally got them done. The owner was there and did cut me a break because I complained but I guess it's time for a change! All good things eventually come to an end! will NEVER come back here. this place used to be my go too salon in Chester county but not after this visit. I went in for a simple take off and was charged $20. I had builder gel on and she used her filer to take it off, I was in the salon for 15 minutes. ive had dip and acrylic take longer. I've never heard of charging $20 for a take off. i paid and told them I was never coming back, and the guy was extremely rude. don't ever come here this place has gone down hill. read more

its a shame- I've been coming to this salon for over two years for my nails every mouth and started to bring my 4 girls for special occasions to have full sets done.... there are very talented nail techs at this salon thats Why I make the drive. I stopped in J&L Nails to have a polish change. That's it! No filing down or shortening & my nails are already short. I looked at the price before I sat down & it said $20.00. When I went to pay (and only ONE coat by the way) the man said, "It's 45.00!" I said, "I'm sorry, what? $45.00 for a simple polish change?" He said, "Yes, we had to take off the old polish (btw it was pale pink) & put on new polish. I didn't want to make a scene, but that is highway robbery! I will never go back! My favorite nail salon! The place is always clean and the receptionist is always very nice and welcoming. I have been here probably over 20 times with an appointment. I have never had to wait and I'm always taken care of right away. They have a huge selection of dip, gel, and regular nail polish and it's all well organized so you can see the colors easily. Michelle does my nails and they always turn out perfect! I get dip powder on my natural nail and she does such a good job with the shape and making sure they aren't too thick. She also does a good job with the application and care beforehand since they never fall off or break. read more

BEWARE WHAT YOU CANT SEE WILL HURT YOU!!!!! Must read very important must know I went to J and L on Friday, April 29 and got my Lip waxed. On Saturday after noon the corner of my lips start to feel bumpy, and if I touched it, it felt like fiber glass being poked into the corners of my lips. To say the least on Monday i went to the Dr. To have him look at it and he referred me to the dermatologist bc he wanted to be sure that it would be treated properly. Well, I went there today and its great to know that i have a bacterial, fungus on my lips from cross contamination of the wax. Basically from them double dipping the stick into the wax after it was already on a clients face. Someone had a bacterial fungus on their face and they double dipped their stick in the hot wax causing cross contamination and with it being hot wax it multipled rapidly and now I have it. thax J and L never again read more

I came in to fix my manicure & explained what I wanted the best I could over the phone before I arrived and again in person. . The manicurist nodded and spoke to make me feel like she understood what I meant. Unfortunately she didn't and began to take off my manicure. I didn't have the time or the intention to get a completely new manicure. She told me I need to know what I'm talking about which.. I literally explained the best I could. She took the manicure off and the manicurist was clearly annoyed I didn't want a replacement manicure, and she took a phone call half the time. The manicurist told me I didn't have to pay for it and took another phone call, I asked if she could remove the rest of the bits of manicure that were left on. She said it was off, so then I asked if she could do a manicure with clear polish (so my nails weren't just scraped off). She said "You said you didn't want anything, so you don't have to pay". She got up and continued her phone call. I tipped $2 and left. I'm so disappointed. I needed to touch up the manicure, explained the best I could over the phone and in person. I had heard good things before, and it's around the holidays so again really disappointing. read more

I have been a client for about 10 years but they are under new ownership in last few weeks and I've seen a significant turnover in staff. Bak and Le kept a very clean salon although you would almost always have a significant wait. New owner is supposedly family but he paces through watching over everyone which strikes me as just creepy. I went twice and wasn't charged same amount for same services. If they can keep the cleanliness and quality standards, while retaining some of the amazing techs, they may make it but I'm in search of a new salon. Can't get past the creep factor. read more

My mom and I went here for the first time last week to get pedicures before our family vacation. We made an appointment and although it was busy we were waited on right away. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and did a wonderful job on our nails. I've never had a pedicure last this long without chipping at least a little. It looks like I just got it done! I went here several years until they began to be ruder everytime I went, I always made appointsments well in advance, yet always had to wait, very rude techs, make you feel like you are doing them a favor. Nickel & dime you for every little thing, different cost every week. Now today and I received a gift card so went for a pedicure - called first, they said no wait come in, sure, paid a dollar to park, and went in only to be told long wait, all seats full & 3 waiting. I have frequented this nail salon intermittently over the past two to three years now and while I had hoped with each try they would have improved, invariably I have been disappointed. This past weekend was the final straw for me. I was bolstered when I read the other similar reviews here that also felt the owners (J and L) are rude and unprofessional. While I understand the language barrier of the assistants is to be expected in this line of work, I resent their bantering back and forth to each other while they are servicing me. One cannot help but feel uncomfortable when they chose to speak in their native tongue right after speaking broken English to you. It is quite obvious no one in this salon has had any professional business training at all . You walk in the door, and everyone looks up at you, but no one says a word while you silently write your name and needed service on the clip board. If you are lucky, someone will look at it after 20 minutes. The lobby has seating for 7 guests. A TV which is usually turned off or tuned to a mind numbing Infomercial or soap opera. When I've been there all seats are taken and people are either sitting on a wood shelf near the door or standing...some even sit waiting at the 8 empty nail stations. Neither the owners or employees seem concerned or bothered at all by the back up. The problem is this, on a good day they have 3 people doing refills, usually there are only 2, Bac and Ben. Occasionally another guy shows up, slow as molasses and a puss on his face. Over the years, I have been to 3 other local nail salons in the Downingtown area and must say that J & L are by far the slowest workers I have ever had to endure sitting through a refill. They are all constantly distracted by everything else going on in the salon. The front door opens and they all stop their work and look up. Another worker says something and once again, they stop work to listen. Any and everything that makes a sound, a comment and they stop working, look up and then go back to work. It is maddening! I used to go to Fancy Nails2000 and would be in and out in 40 minutes. At J & L a refill alone, is 1 hour and 15 minutes, minimum. With all of the distractions and interruptions, guests signing in, paying out, phone calls. They are seriously understaffed, but they don't care because they are making a killing! It's a family affair there and I've yet to see any one of them write down the amount of their tips. You get a thank you and the cash goes undocumented into their drawer. I hope the IRS sees this report and checks them out. They pay no one to man the phone, greet a guest when they sign in or check out. Nope, Bac, his wife, and 2 others run the whole show there, which is why it takes so long to have a service done. They have 4 or 5 young girls working at the "gel bar" or pedicure baths. If you ask anyone of them a question, they have to ask someone else for an answer and then good luck trying to decipher what exactly they are saying to you. It's just a very long, weird, uncomfortable, confusing experience. Regarding pricing, they are no cheaper then any other salon in the area. 10 nail stations and 3 workers tops! I can't say they are arrogant, just ignorant and have a lackadaisical attitude. Ignorant to the idea that assuring their customer's have a pleasant experience and that meeting their needs are their #1 priority. I think most of their clients are walk ins, but I prefer an appointment. I booked mine 2 weeks before my vacation so my nails would be freshly done. So I arrive 5 minutes before hand and naturally the lobby had 8 people waiting with long bored faces. I noticed on the sign in sheet not any of them had an appointment so I was happy to know I'd wouldn't have to wait long. WRONG. After waiting 35 minutes they started calling the people who where sitting there when I arrived, so I went up and asked the owner, he said "your appointment wasn't on the books". So I told him I most certainly did call 2 weeks prior, that I was a regular customer and I cannot help it if who ever answered my phone call and took my reservation failed to write it down,(which thinking about it now would not surprise me) and all he did was look at me with that unaffected face. No comment, no nothing. So as I waited yet another 20 minutes in addition to the 35 I had already invested, I thought about the lack of professionalism this place has. Rather then call my name and say "you don't have an appointment on our book", he just completely ignored and by passed me completely. THAT was the straw that broke the camel's back. Is that how a business treats is customers? It's regular customers? Seriously? Trust me, you are nobody to them and you will feel it from the moment you walk into the door. Good bye, J&L. read more

Used to love it here but since there was a change in ownership, things have definitely changed. Supposedly it's the same family but definitely not the same policies. My daughter and I got our nails done (SNS), just as we have a dozen times before. Mine are wonderful and I've had no issues. My daughter had issues during the application and the nail tech had to redo several nails during the visit. They were done to fast and with little care. Within 24 hours they started lifting, within a few days 4 out of 10 had small cracks all over them and were beginning to chip. She returned to the salon and spoke with the manager who declined to fix them free of charge. He told her he was going to charge her $20 to fix them because of the time it would take. She declined and asked that he fix them for free as they should stand behind their work. Especially if they start to fail after 24 hours. He offered $15 and she declined again and left. The previous owners stood behind their work and always fixed any and all issues with no complaint or price haggling. Such a shame because we've been going here for years but won't ever be going back. read more

I have many other nail salons close to my house, but none that are as good as J&L...so I make the drive. Best pink & whites around and their spa pedicures are amazing. Someone complained about appointments...I have never had a problem making one, and appointment times have always been kept. Is there a language barrier? Sometimes, yes...how about some patience people. We live in a society, how about we try to get along. The people who run the salon are very nice indeed and really try to take care of their clients. Very creative family nails business. In addition to a standard or spa manicure, they can do gel nails, acrylic, and new type: SNS. I like the SNS because it's very gentle and doesn't hurt your own nails. It looks like a gel nail, but is thinner, so it's easier to actually use your nails. The SNS just needs to be filled every 3 weeks or so. You can do a natural finish (pink) or do an American or French nail finish with SNS. There's free parking just 2 stores down. A neighbor recommended this place to my Mom and I go every time I am in town. I typically get a regular manicure and my mom gets the gel manicure. They have lots of colors to choose from. I recommend making an appointment as it can get crowded. They have a very nice waiting area if you do have to wait. The place is always clean and the pedicure area is great! The prices are slightly more expensive than other nail places but you will get your money's worth. There is free parking for up to 2 hours in a lot 2 stores down. read more

Got acrylics done here today by a very sweet lady who I was very nice to talk to. It was an okay manicure. Not the worst I've gotten but not the best. 27$ a very good price but the nails are bulky and they are still sore 5 hours later. I also think it is bogus they charge an extra 5$ for picking the shape of nail. I usually get coffin but settled for square. It's not a bad shape but my one thumb is really wonky. I have been coming here for about 15 years, I've moved up to 50 miles away, but still came back to this place, luckily I am closer right now though. The owners are very appreciative of my business each and every time they see me, and remember me by name and remember little tidbits of information to ask about when I am in. I have always had great pedicures, even when they are training new staff, the experienced staff keep tabs and asks me how everything is going. They keep the salon clean and up to date and have gone through many expansions of the facility over the years, as the business has gotten busier and busier. (Which can only happen if your customers are satisfied.) They also have ample staffing, and are happy to make an appointment, if you don't want to risk a wait. They replace their equipment regularly, and stay on the cutting edge of the new products offered in the industry. The prices are very reasonable, also. I bring my visiting friends and family here often, and they are always happy with the services they receive as well. Also, they have 2 cute children's pedi chairs, and when I bring my nieces in they treat them like royalty. It's a special treat for the girls, and the staff does a fantastic job at making the girls feel special! read more
