We've always has a great experience visiting the El Cajon site, mostly because of their Store Manager Jax. She is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. She always points us in the right direction and takes the time to explain the different options/pricing. The wood they delivered was extremely warped and of uneven width which made it impossible to install evenly. They refused to find a solution stating that they were not going to take back wood they couldn't resell. I purchased approximately $3000 worth of hardwood. Initially the customer service was good when they were trying to sell me on the wood. I took their advice in selecting which kind of wood based on the project I described. They delivered the wood with missing pieces. They said they were going to call me to deliver later. About a month went by and they never called so I had to go pick up the wood myself. When it came time for install, my installers noted the wood was severely warped, and the width of the wood was not even. I tried to be flexible and fair but JW Lumber refused to make things right in any way. Attached are some pictures, the fence looks worst in person. These guys were a hoot! Walked in on a great conversation about one girl hairstyle in the other guy in the middle of an argument his girlfriend. However very friendly and we able to guide me to where I need to go. The lumber was fairly priced and had A lot of different wood choices! I need more of the same lumber in the next couple of weeks and I will be definitely going back to JW lumber. Once we were ready to purchase, they helped model the design to confirm that we had everything we needed, and the materials were delivered the same week. Immediately upon pulling in, a young man named 'Will' directed me where to park, as parking is minimal. After trying the three big do-it-yourself places (you know who they are) I was feeling frustrated at not finding anyone who could help me realize my home landscape project. I called J&W. Dominic listened to my ideas and then asked questions that further nailed the look and the layout. He gave me three options of wood but recommended the least expensive...railroad ties. After he figured the number needed, I told him I would come in and choose the ties...I had heard that other companies pick the worst to deliver. Dominic assured me that all the ties were of acceptable quality, but he would select the best. Delivery was prompt, next day, and the ties were great. Most places are unfriendly and not too interested in answering questions but here we felt like they wanted to help us. This review is specific to a delivery experience I had maybe its just the driver not sure. Driver called and said he was 15 min away. I said someone would be there to show where to drop it. The guy flew into the driveway, ignored my wife and dropped it so fast the bands broke off the cedar planks. Plenty of concrete everywhere and he dropped it in the dirt with no dunnage. Over $1500 worth of good wood laying in the dirt. He was in such a hurry not even my wifes flailing arms could get his attention. It would have taken two minutes of his time to have the courtesy to drop it where I wanted. I understand I paid for roll off delivery but care should still be taken to ensure nothing is damaged. I was told I could return anything that got dirty but that defeats the purpose of having it delivered. Its all dirty. I didnt want anything for free just honesty and maybe fix the problem. I'm very impressed with J&W. I received delivery of redwood that exceeded my expectations. It was all very straight and clear. Out of 60 or 70 boards, I really only had a problem with 2 being slightly warped or cracked.... and they were more than willing to help me replace the boards if I couldn't make them work on my fence. I also had an issue with one of the wood cleaners one of their salespeople suggested. They were quick to not only help fix it, but also gave me another product that worked wonders at no cost. They have been very helpful and patient with me the whole time and I would not hesitate to buy from them again on my next project. I need wood for a project and I contacted several different lumber yards. J&W responded fast and asked me for more details so they could understand the scope of the work I was doing. They then came up with a full quote that included everything so there was no surprises. Went to their yard and placed the order and in two days I had all the lumber delivered to my house. And I called back because I wasn't 100% sure I remembered the prices correctly and he was so nice and patient and remembered the samples that I had picked and give me the prices again! Full disclosure - I did not actually buy anything at this store, but the store manager, AJ tried his best to help me. We would have had a deal, as he worked hard to beat a competitor's price, but after several rounds of calls and bids, the material I needed apparently got sold and they were going to have to special order in at a higher price. Dom really makes this place valuable. He spent a good 2 hrs today walking me through building my deck. He didn't give up when we kept finding new issues. He puts 150 percent into everyone. The guy also helped probably 10-15 other customers while helping me and everyone left happy. I've been going here for awhile. Generally they do a pretty decent job and have pretty decent prices. However, a few times they have given me warped 2x6s, 2x4s, and cuts that don't measure what I asked. They have good customer service in general but not all of the employees seem to care about the quality. Just recently I asked for a cut of specific dimensions and it was literally about 8 inches short of what I asked for. They also provided me with some pretty terrible wood on that same trip. I suspect is was a particular employee who was in a hurry or just didn't care. Ok to go here but check all your stuff before you leave! I'll update this if they fix my most recent issues. read more

Their load up time is fast. Their inventory is diverse, high quality and consistently in stock. Their prices are competitive though, they are not the cheapest. They are cool about giving free quotes. J & W is the place to go for garden boxes. My husband and I decided to use an area on the side of our house to grow vegetables that has poor soil and old pavers buried a foot under the soil. On 03/16/19 I stopped by to purchase a garden box had been referred because of the high quality of LUMBER used on the garden boxes. "Dane" a staff member helped me out. KUDDOS for his great customer service, especially because I am a female. Returned to J&W on 3/18/19 to pick up my merchandise, unfortunately DANE was busy with another customer therefore one of the other guys attempted to help me out. He was rude, condescending. Do you think that it was because I was a female? The customer service was Wayyy different from Dane's approach in him helping me out. I'm a project manager with a local landscape design/build company and we have been using J&W for a few years now. What sets this place apart from other places is their customer service. Everyone I personally know and work with over there is great from the manager AJ to the lot guys. I recently purchased a 22' beam which I messed up on and should have orders a 25'. The beam was a special order and probably shouldn't of been returnable, but AJ made it happen. I understood there was going to be a restock fee and to help offset it I was given a discount on the longer replacement. I highly recommend this crew and location for any lumber needs. read more
