J Barber Moving and Storage of Fredericksburg, VA was where I began my move to Florida. My move coordinator, Beverly, was fantastic. Anyone who gets the pleasure of speaking to her will immediately understand what I mean. She answered all my questions and really made me feel at ease with the move. J Barber sent Joe, the driver, to do the Virginia pick up and the Florida drop off. He was great! Very nice, professional, good spirited, and easy going while at the same time very efficient. He made sure all the floors, stair rails, and door facings were covered to avoid any damage. He took care to inventory all the furniture and boxes and made sure everything was properly loaded on the truck. Joe selected a fantastic crew of very hard working individuals (Al, Michael, and Matt) to load my belongings on a shuttle truck (because my driveway wasn't accessible for a larger truck) which was then transferred to a National Van Lines semi truck waiting at the J Barber warehouse. The loading crew wrapped my furniture like it was made of glass. They did such a good job and all my furniture made it without a scratch. Everyone on the pick up crew was courteous and professional. They weren't on their phones or taking smoke breaks as I've experienced in the past. Once in Florida, Joe contacted me to let me know he was in town, and set up a delivery time for the following day. He contracted a local crew (Thomas and James) to unload the truck and set up the furniture in my new home. They worked quickly and did a great job of placing things where I wanted them. They were good natured and made friendly conversation as they worked. No smoking or phone usage on the Florida end either. Joe double checked the area to ensure the furniture was put back together properly and all the trash was picked up. I really appreciated that the pick up driver and the drop off driver was the same person. Anytime it is possible to use the same driver, I would highly recommend doing so. I've moved several times but never using a semi truck so I was nervous about my stuff being transferred once it left my departing house. I can now say without a doubt, my uncertainty was unfounded. Every part of the process, from the negotiations, to the planning, preparation, pack out, and delivery was smooth and handled with the highest levels of professionalism. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the sellers' move that I had to deal with, but J Barber fully addressed everything in a completely fair way. I needed several boxes moved to California from Virginia. I reached out to several moving companies to get quotes. Kate from J Barber Moving was one of two to actually get back to me. Yet she was the only one to keep in contact with me. She was very patient. Very helpful. And seemingly did all she could to make the move Possible. Unfortunately, I could not afford their pricing so I did not end up using this service. Was cheaper to ship myself unfortunately. These movers were fantastic. Their staff called us to confirm the date and time on the day before and were very professional. The two gentlemen who showed up (Larry, and I can't remember the other guy's name... but he had a beard and a SF 49er's hat) were by far the friendliest and funniest movers we have ever had. It was almost 100 degrees today with very high humidity and while they joked about how hot it was, they didn't rush and were very thorough with our belongings. We recently moved from one historic home with many antiques and over 6,000sqft to another home a mile away which was equally as large. The whole experience from start to finish with J. Barber was top notch! Kate was checking in and keeping me informed throughout, the gentleman doing the survey was professional, the quote I received was fair and competitive, however, the best part was the actual move. It was well into the 90s and the team of 6 never once complained. Everything was moved and wrapped to perfection, furniture was disassembled and reassembled while keeping track of parts, floors and doors were protected, and they wouldn't let me move or lift a finger and wouldn't leave until they were sure everything was placed exactly as I wanted it. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Last week in April, first week of May, this company was contracted to move me from Emerald Isle, NC to Boston, MA. My dad was in the military and after high school, I joined the military and have been on active duty for 15 years. I mention that because this was my 23rd move and by far the most frustrating. To start, a week before my scheduled packing date, they called and moved it up by two days. That's two days I hadn't planned on being there, but I was ok with being flexible. Then the day before they were supposed to arrive, they moved the schedule back to the original days. No problem, but here is where it gets frustrating. Moving into a major metropolitan city requires some coordination in regards to getting a moving truck on to a city street. I asked the company rep (Kate) when they were going to pull the permits, and she told me that her company has nothing to do with permits and that I would have to get them on my own. City of Boston requires permits to be pulled three days in advance, in person! So I had to come out of pocket and hire a permit pulling company to pull the documents and post flyers on my street. $144 dollars later, and the permits for one specific day between 7-4. So I had to beg the company to be sure to be there on that day. Again, Kate reiterated that they had NOTHING to do with permits. So the day comes and the truck shows up around noon, with only two guys. Now my concern is that we are going to run out of time on the permit, to the point that my wife and I had to start helping them unpack! As my $3000 dollar sectional couch was being brought in, I noticed that the frame was broken and the seams were torn. I mentioned this to the driver and he acknowledged that it must have been broken in transit. He explained the claim process, I bought them pizza, tipped them $100 dollars, and off they went. The driver made sure I signed the damage and waiver claim paperwork (form 1850) but insisted I not write anything in it because I would be making a claim for the couch anyway. So off they go, and when I report to my new unit, I file all my travel and moving paperwork for reimbursement, including the receipt for the permits. The clerk tells me that there is no way I should have paid for this, and that the moving company already has an accounting line to charge the government for permits, which THEY ALREADY HAD!!!!!!!!! I had the MCO office make some calls and I was reimbursed for the permits. I then filed a claim for my broken couch. I took pictures, I found purchase statements from when I bought it, and submitted to the claims website. A week later I receive a nice email saying the claim was denied because the driver said I broke the couch when I flipped it over to put the legs on it. I NEVER TOUCHED THE COUCH!! Unreal! Someone is lying to save his job. I'm not trying to pull a fast one here!!! I want whats fair. I didn't break my couch!! Furthermore, I was told that since I didn't write anything on the 1850 form, the day of delivery, that nothing could be done. THEN WHY DO I HAVE 75 DAYS TO FILE A CLAIM? DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! There employees are liars and dishonest! I will be reimbursed for my couch, even if I have spend more than it's worth, simply on principal!!! read more

J. Barber changed my August 2017 move from the worst in my life to the best. We are on our twelfth move in ten years, but our first with our new baby. When I found out that our delivery had been delayed five days, I was initially very upset. We live in a tourist town where it is very difficult to find temporary lodging, let alone a safe place for a baby. After contacting the company, the owner and his staff turned it around and delivered my stuff on the following day. The owner himself rented a truck and drove several hundred miles to personally make my delivery. My family got safely into their home on time. And, for the first time in twelve moves, not a single thing was damaged, broken, or even dirtied. This is a wonderful small business that truly cares about their customers. Unimpressed by the admin staff who scheduled my move (and this is the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars). Made one special request (a fragile item needed packing peanuts) which was not passed on to the movers. Turns out that the company doesn't stock packing peanuts, but the lady I spoke to didn't know that. Bottom line: I will probably end up with a million pieces of my fragile item at the new house. The good news: The 2 gentlemen who showed up to pack and crate my things were absolutely superb. They were polite, asked whether I had anything that needed special attention, and went right to work. They packed out about 500 lbs. of stuff in under 2 hours, but I never felt that they were rushing. Everything seemed well packed and this is definitely one of the better moving crews I've had (and after 12 years of Army life, I've had quite a few). Bottom line: Excellent movers, even if the admin staff leaves something to be desired. read more

Everyone from the office and sales staff were great as they brokered my cross county move with National Van Lines. Bill was my sales rep, and he was incredibly helpful in finding boxes, and even visiting me at work a couple of times to make sure we had everything we needed. He drove his personal truck to our house to drop off some boxes. Lindsey was also very helpful and stayed in touch throughout the move. She checked in once we arrived in CA to make sure everything was going smoothly, which was above and beyond in my opinion. I will probably never need their service again since I live across the country now, and they still went great lengths to make sure I was happy. Highly recommended! read more

As if moving isn't horrible anyway-- this company provided the absolute worst move of my long mobile career. I have a large number of missing and broken items. This was the least of the issues. The movers originally arrived late to pack me up, took out the mailbox in my neighborhood, didn't have tools to take apart the furniture, forgot their ramp, and didn't have the appropriate sized boxes. When they brought my belongings to my new residence, boxes were broken, items were in boxes different from what left my home, anything fragile was broken, and my furniture was no longer wrapped. They didn't arrive at the agreed upon time, but instead showed up after 2:30pm. Again they had no tools to put the furniture back together. Since my tool box was now missing, I couldn't help them. They did not put the boxes in the appropriate rooms. I have clothes boxes in the living room, kitchen boxes upstairs in the bedroom and furniture pieces randomly placed throughout the home. The guys left at 945pm (after their office closed) saying someone would return in the morning to do the unpack--this never happened. When I called in the morning, I was told the movers would not be returning due to my treatment of them. Their story was completely fabricated. I want to cry about the mess I am left to clean up. Horrible! Avoid them altogether. They completely lack integrity and don't properly screen then people they send into your home. read more

They did a nice job, however once I got my delivery, I recognized that I was missing about $2000 + dollars worth of stuff and of the two people wrapping, only one had access to this area were the stuff was located. A word to the wise, photo their drivers licences and do not let them carry any back packs on the job. read more
