This is by far my favorite steakhouse in Austin. I've tried a lot of them and this one definitely takes the cake. The experience of being able to pick out your own steak knife was so cool and the banana cream pudding was the best i've ever had. I brought my boyfriend here for his first time and he said it's the best restaurant he's been to in Austin .I will definitely be back here. Stopped by J. Carver's for an after dinner drink and dessert after an amazing dinner at Uchibā. We ordered a couple wonderful cocktails and a very tasty dessert. I ordered The Godfather, a cocktail with Makers Mark J. Carver's Private Selection, Grand Marnier, Giffard Crème De Peche, Licor 43, lemon and cocoa bitters. It was a perfect cocktail followed by their Strawberry Vacherin a thin, crisp meringue with strawberries in Grand Marnier and vanilla bean gelato. It was a delicious and satisfying bite. I washed it down and concluded with a perfect dessert cocktail, a Carajillo made with Licor 43, espresso and cinnamon. The drinks and dessert were perfect to cap off the night and my trip to Austin. I'll be back to J. Carver's my next trip in town, next time for a great steak and more tasty cocktails. read more

On my first visit to J Carver's I have a few observations that I'd like to pass on. First it was a Friday and my wife set up an early dinner with another couple. The bad news is that no one in the group made reservations. As we about to leave,because the place was busy,when the manager Andrew started to get creative. He was genuinely concerned that our night might have been ruined so he helped us with the following. Providing my wife and I with a complementary glass of bubbly and then made accommodations in the private dining room for the four of us. Andrew definitely went above and beyond, which was impressive all by itself, but the best news the food was outstanding. The appetizers were tasty and the entrées fantastic. Sooo good. I got the filet with fried oysters and omg how tender and delicious was the filet. Also had some raw oysters, also delicious. On the side I had asparagus and fries. Both delicious as well. Dessert was the best-- bananas, foster bread, pudding with vanilla ice cream. I even ordered one to go. I sat at the bar with a friend and the seats were very comfortable and the vibe was just super dark and sultry and cozy and I loved it. I think it would be a great place to go in the winter. I brought my fiancé here for our celebratory birthday date. I definitely made the right choice. The first thing you see when you walk in here off of the busy e6th is a black curtain. When they pull back this curtain it's as if you've entered the fanciest upscale whiskey lounge you can imagine. The type of place you may run into 007 at. When we sat down we were greeted with cards from the staff that were hand signed. A master bartender who helped us with drink suggestions as he was being personable. A rich food selection that was to die for. We tried the sturgeon caviar, raw oysters, carpet bag style steak, as well as one of the pasta dishes and some tasty sides. A glossy version of formulaic (surf&turf) things done previously in Austin (McSchmicks) but well executed for the new population of affluent(?) urbanites living glossy lives in new condo towers downtown and passers-thru drawn to Austin's new rep. Atmosphere, drinks, & food are all enjoyable for various kinds of schmoozing & canoodling. While very attentive, wait staff can be a little too familiar, perhaps invasive, in comparison to highly profesh eateries in major cities. Eg asking evidently adult women for ID just to get their deets out of (creepy) curiosity, or to advance a poorly formed humorous compliment. And later opining that my date was "officially the most beautiful woman in the restaurant tonite." Sketchy.. potentially flattering... definitely declasse. Maybe just a wierd hazing situation? Something to note... or maybe chat to a manager about... or just not go back. eta- I do hope the regular wine list suffers critical review & revision toward more thoughtful/unique offerings, and more BTG. The reserve/cellar list has a few impressive things but seems impractical for much of Austin's usual traffic (it's been tried before without success). eta x2- Discussed concerns with GM- got TONS of pushback. Def not returning. Major points ding for GM not properly training staff to show discretion at all times. Major ding. But def go if you want creepy waiters hitting on your date. We had such a fun night at J Carvers. Our group of four ordered crab cake, tuna tartare, steak and Dover sole and each dish was outstanding. Nora, our server, was terrific. She answered questions about the menu and provided great suggestions on what to order and took good care of us. We did have a hiccup with a long wait for the crab cake but it was so delicious it made up for it. Our water glasses never ran dry. A memorable experience. We will be back. read more

Top notch service, ambiance and food! From the moment we walked in, we were treated like so kindly and with extra care. I let them know in advance that it was my boyfriend's birthday, and they were ready for us. We ordered a lot of things and nothing disappointed us. The garlic bread was so garlic and good. They even complimented us with a Caesar salad, which was super fresh. we ended up ordering the 30 ounce fillet, which was so delicious and cooked perfectly. on the side, we were recommended to order the baked potato gnocchi and I am so happy our waiter told us to get it because it was my boyfriend's favorite thing about our entire trip to Austin. It's basically like a baked potato gnocchi form. Our server was very knowledgeable and very tentative to our needs. Because it was my boyfriend's birthday they actually gifted us any dessert we liked, complimentary. This was a great birthday dinner for just the two of us and a great last meal of our trip. The 6th and final destination for my birthday weekend of gluttony in the great state of Texas occurred at @jcarversatx. Ever since my time way back at Placewise Media where I started as a ColdFusion developer I promised my friends for years I would make it down. It finally happened!        Our feast included a dozen Oysters, a Fresh Jumbo LUMP Blue Crab Cake ( J. Carver's Spicy Mustard and Cocktail Sauces ), the Burgundy Vineyard Escargot ( Baked in Crisp, Pastry Covered Crock ), Roasted Red Beets, "Baked Potato" Gnocchi ( Smoked Bacon / Crème Fraiche Vermont Cheddar Scallions ) a Tuna salad, and finally nearly half a pound of certified A5 Japanese Wagyu! No room for dessert.         The escargot preparation was the best I've ever had, and when the server said the Japanese A5 was $20/oz I looked at him and exclaimed, "No fucking way my guy! Can you show me the certificate of authenticity?" The server retorts, "Yes sir! I'll be right back." If love A5 like me, you know just how cheap that price point was. Every aspect of this meal was fire, the staff flawless, but most importantly the company.         Thank you both for helping me usher in another year in the game we call life. I'm sorry it took me so long to get down there. I'm blessed to understand just how awesome a fuck around and find out state can be, and your wisdom on relationships hit brother. This place should get six stars on a five star scale. The service is top tier -- there is no place in Austin that even remotely approaches the quality and attentiveness of the service at J Carver's. The maitre d'hotel introduced himself at the front, got us a champagne while we waited for our table, and checked in with us a few times to prepare us. We were promptly turned over to Kelly's expert care, and she took us through each course responding to our every need before we even knew. The steak knife selection is a beautiful touch -- as the anticipation builds for expertly grilled steaks, you're offered different knife selections, starting with a traditional Laguiole (naturally my top choice) with a cherry handle, and ending with a broad Nordic knife. Kelly deserves extra accolades for noticing my beautiful date getting chilly, and coming by with hot water and lemon. Thank you for that. No dining experience in Austin comes remotely close to the magic at J Carver's. There is nothing like it. The Dover sole was perfectly breaded and plated, the crab fried rice was so refined beyond what is available at Eddie V's (they dropped the butter and got the kosho kick dialed in), and the filet (carpetbagger style) was generous and flavorful. The Béarnaise was the best I've had anywhere. I've dined at every steakhouse in Austin, many in Dallas, and all the big ones in NYC and J Carver's runs circles around all of them. read more

Why did I wait so long to enjoy this beautiful spot!? Service INCREDIBLE! We celebrated my birthday at the bar and was everything I'd hoped for... Jess was our bartender and she was FIRE! We started with the garlic bread and BLT salad, then moved on to the 10oz filet (which was THE most perfect meds rare+) and we tried the broccolini and gnocchi! An absolute amazing meal. I had an event here for my wedding, Chaz and Miles everything super seamless, as we prepared for the event. They were extremely helpful in walking us through the different options, and how much food to order for the party size. The food was ABSOLUTELY amazing, we loved everything (bone marrow, foie gras, blue crab cakes, caesar salad, tomahawk steak, and alaskan halibut). We also got some sides to go with the apps, and entrees. Just an awesome experience here at J Carver's, what kept this from a 5 star rating, was how delayed we were in getting seated. The staff told us to stand off to the side and wait for our table; the area was super tight, and really just a great area to be waiting with a sizeable group. Each time I asked for an update, we kept getting the answer "just a few minutes", and I think by the time we got seated it was nearly 15-20 minutes after our reservation time. Came here on a Saturday night to celebrate a birthday/wedding anniversary which I noted on the reservation. The restaurant reached out via text a few days prior asking who we were celebrating. When we showed up, there were 2 cards signed by the staff which was super thoughtful! Right when you walk in, there is a blackout curtain that leads you into a beautiful and cozy atmosphere. Service was excellent all night and they fold your napkin every time you get up. We started off with some appetizers, oysters and the crab cake. Oysters were fresh and a nice variety and the crab cake was the best ever. Juicy pieces of crab and cooked to perfection. Now it did take awhile for our entrees to come out, about an hour. Got a porterhouse steak for 2, a filet with lobster tail and the veal Parmesan. There was a small mixup where we had an extra filet come out that we gave back. The steaks were cooked to perfection. Exterior was a little salty to my taste but just personal opinions. The veal Parmesan was hugeee and def worth the money. We also ordered the potato gnocchi and it was good, but a little heavy. The banana bread pudding for dessert was 10/10. Overall, a great place for special occasions or date night. read more

Got the blue crab cakes & bone marrow to start, then the Bolognese & steak as entrees with corn creme brulee as a side. It was my birthday so they comped the lemon/strawberry dessert which was a nice touch (and gave me a birthday card signed by the staff)! One thing that was a bit off to me was that their "steak grading" isn't the typical "grade" we all know, ie the universal "medium" would be "medium rare" to them. With that, I found the steak to be lackluster; it was good, but I wasn't impressed given that their known for steaks. We were stoked for a dry aged NY strip but for a $100 steak, the cut was not good. There was so much gristle in it, it was unpleasant. The neighbor was sketchy when I arrive with ton of graffiti on the building across . It's our first time eating their so the waiter " explained the menu". He seems to speed thru the menu like he was in a marathon. The menu was very limited on the food ( had about 4-6 items under each course).Also when we were ordering he seems to have a hard time hearing. They have pages and pages of wine and liquor if that's what you want but the food was limited. One of my guess had a ribeye and mash potato and ended up with food poisoning that night ( that was the only thing they ate there. Also hard breakfast at home 8 hr before so it was not the home meal) . I have eaten at many fine dining restaurant and this one was very sub par. I had a center cut steak and crab fried rice which was ok nothing to rave about. The food was average and not worth the price. Also our service was sub par. I definitely will not be going back.
