The store clerk was friendly and informative when approached as browsing sales indicating good deals but making me aware they were final, non returnable. J. Crew has been my Midwest godsend to me, ever since I discovered how important it is to 'dress for success' and look presentable. J. Crew has SAVED me at those crucial moments, meeting the mother of a boyfriend, meeting someone you have to impress, going on those college interviews (I wore my favorite ivy green blazer to all of them with leather knobby buttons.) The preppy meets quirky style is fitting for the Plaza clientele, and even more smartly placed beside Anthropologie for those wayward shoppers that like to dress both classic and eclectic. The manager is great, friendly towards everyone - he establishes a good name for J.Crew and his staff by schmoozing up the women who religiously shop there. My sister is a DIE HARD J.Crew addict - she's one of those customer's that establishes relationships with the people working there, they know her by name, and if she didn' t come in for a week - they would be concerned. I myself like to layer J.Crew with the vintage pieces I find in the area. J.Crew is good for basics and lately, as their name has spread over the last decade to become more commercial, some surprisingly detailed and vintage-inspired statement pieces as well. For winter and fall, their classic peacoats and trenches in every color are always popular, along with their cable-knit sweaters and anything cashmere. In spring and summer, their flip-flops are on every woman's feet and J.Crew bathing suits have the most options in the most colors of any clothing store I know. The problem with this particular Plaza location, is that it suffers from constantly being picked over. It carries the bare minimum of the latest styles, and the sizes you want are always gone in a flash, with the exception of those few sizes few people wear filling the sale rack in the back of the store for the next half year. Their sale rack is ridiculous. It sells the pieces no one wants in the sizes few people wear and that's on a good day! Sale racks are good only when you want to actually wear the clothes on it - but it's no good to sell a pea green t-shirt with an anchor on it in December. That's another thing, their sales are very seasonally backwards - when other stores place their summer things on sale in late July, for J.Crew, it's more like September - too little, too late! I realized there was a problem with their stock after subscribing to the J.Crew magazine and seeing all the wonderful options I had never seen in the stores, pages and pages and pages gone unsold in Kansas City! And when I visited the J.Crew at Oak Park, even that location carried much more than on the Plaza. Your best bet, if you're like me, and shop J.Crew (and I'm sure you already know this then), is to stick to the catalogue OR visit the Oak Park location, but the Plaza is pretty useless, good for a few of their sweaters and pants and headbands - and that's it! read more

Since I'm from LA (aka the land of too many shoppers therefore impossible to compete), I make it a point to visit my favorite stores whenever I travel to "less populous" cities. It never disappoints. Case in point: a tie front long dolman sleeve shirt and a tee for $20 total. In LA, $20 could only get you an effing chai bowl, which, unlike super cute Jcrew tops, wouldn't even last until tomorrow. read more

I like J. Crew, a lot. I think what they do, they do well. If I need a good gingham shirt or a great cable knit sweater, J. Crew does it extremely well and I would rather pay the twenty dollars more on quality here than save that twenty on poor quality at someplace like H&M! The real pisser for me, and therefore the 3 stars, is the customer service. I don't know if it's just me or what, but time and time again I am never greeted or spoke to when I enter or leave the store. Not that I want to be hounded by a sales staff, but a friendly "hi" or "thanks for stopping in" would be greatly appreciated. It's not just a hand full of times that this happens to me, but dozens and dozens. I have even walked by a group of employees standing at the cash registers and no one says a word.....to me, but they continue to talk to each other. Maybe I don't look like a J. Crew model, but damn, I'm still a potential consumer. I did have a great sales associate ONE time (seriously). He was great and I'm sad I don't remember his name, but he should be promoted and video taped for training videos for the rest of the staff. I won't stop looking in at J. Crew just to check them out, but I guarantee I would spend much more money if the level of customer service was elevated at this store. I have to toss JCrew 5 stars due to the fact I tried on ONE pair of pants and bought them over my lunch break, how is that even possible? I walked in and was greeted by a somewhat military lineup of middle aged women who didn't look like they were having much fun but once one of them directed me towards the men's sections I was greeted by Joe, the male salesperson. I was direct, I just said I need business pants and I think Joe just had an eye for what type of pants would fit me best. He directed me to the Bowery line. I explained I have trouble with jeans being tight in the thighs but once I size up enough that the thighs are roomy I look like a box because I'm usually at a 38+ and my waist is smaller than that. After picking a color and size Joe searched through the stack of pants and guided me to the dressing room area. I tried on one color and it fit fine but realized I needed the other color so I got that without trying it on but kept the same size. The pants fit well so I didn't even bother trying out anything else. Props to Joe for intercepting me and directing me to the right cut without using and adjective words that may offend sum, aka he didn't call me a fat kid. Pants were even 30% off, or something, we all know clothing sales are a bunch of hype. They cost me 60 bucks. read more

Was just visiting KC over the weekend but missed all the sales. Stopped by this JC on Tuesday to get the "Garment Dyed Utility Popover" and paid full price- $78. I thought that was high, but I paid it. Later, I checked the catalog and the website, which have the full price at $69.50! Is this store authorized to jack up their prices? I tried to find out by contacting JC headquarters. They are still "looking into it" but I was refunded the difference. I can understand some discrepancies during sales or promotions but this is a full price item. Wonder if it's happening just at this location or is it a widespread practice? Regardless, if I ever shop here again, I will make sure to check against the website first. Super sketchy and deceptive business practices make me wonder who is running things. read more

Associates are always friendly in J. Crew. The clothes are of much better quality than most other stores. My main gripe here is that the brand's sizing has changed so much that there's literally nothing a man taller than 6'5" can buy in-store and have it fit you well. This goes for the Gap, Banana Republic, and others as well. This is a review of the store, and not the online sales. The store's lack of size variety is disappointing, so I go buy online instead. read more

I don't know why my feelings towards J. Crew are so luke warm. The overall clothing quality is good: the merchandise is in-arguably well made. The staff is friendly and helpful. The presentation of garments is unwelcoming with a presentation of size-0 clothes tucked and pinned around the emaciated-looking mannequins (there is an unfortunate subtext: you probably won't fit into our clothes). Overall, if you can get beyond the poor presentation, J. Crew is a worthwhile place to shop, but it is nothing over which to become greatly excited. J. Crew's clothing ranges greatly in style, sometimes having really great pieces, other times making you question why you'd even bother looking. Sometimes the designs try to be a bit "too cute," but there are often some good basics that can provide good options for "business casual" and "everyday wear" as well as more dressy options. All are overpriced. The men's clothes suffer a similar style issue (some of the "preppy" and "quirky" options merely suggest that the fellow wearing these outfits in public deserve a good beating), but there are some very nice sweaters and basics that are worthy of a browse. The accessories have the widest range of response. Some of the jewelry and hair ornaments are terribly tacky and cluttered looking, but they frequently have some nice watches. I always make a stop into J. Crew as part of my Christmas shopping search, and there is frequently a good looking wrist watch to consider. J. Crew is located directly across from the Cinemark Palace Movie Theater on the Country Club Plaza, and is within a hop, skip and a jump from Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and other such clothing stores (Banana Republic and The Gap are just another block to the north). If you are shopping for clothes on the Plaza, it will certainly do you no harm to stop into J. Crew. read more
