Great little store. Just like a souvenir shop. Some things are overpriced. Some things are not. I liked the small family owned feel to the store. I don't like supporting bigger ABC Stores when I can get the same thing from a smaller independent store. All the bracelets and necklaces and Lilo and Stitch items you can find. My grandma's family is from west Kaua'i and we visit each summer so I'm familiar with Hanapēpē, but I recently visited JJ Ohana for the first time on a whim. We got there ~30 minutes before closing and I mostly wanted to check out their Ni'ihau shell lei, as they remind me of my grandma. They have a variety of lei, bracelets, and earrings and also offer repair services. I thought this was going to be a place run by non-locals like some of the other souvenir shops tend to be but was pleasantly surprised that the owners have deep roots in west Kaua'i too. We ended up talking story for a long time! Very friendly folks. They are one of the few places that sell certified Ni'ihau shell jewelry and provide you with a certificate so that you know your purchase is legitimate. Ni'ihau shell jewelry is the only jewelry specifically protected by the Legislature of the State of Hawai'i (H.B. No. 2569 passed in 2004), though unfortunately, many sellers still try to pass off any kine shell jewelry as Ni'ihau. To someone unfamiliar, the pieces may seem overpriced but the process to gather/clean the shells (which can only be found on Ni'ihau!) and make the jewelry are painstakingly meticulous. The prices are related not just to the number of shells involved but the qualities of the individual shells (colors, shapes, shine, etc.) It's important to support these talented, hardworking artisans and help ensure that this practice continues to be passed down. The shop also sells other types of jewelry and items (ex: wood carvings) that you wouldn't typically find at most other souvenir shops, in addition to common things like postcards and magnets, so I would still recommend stopping by if you've already been to a souvenir shop in Līhu'e or Kapa'a for example. They also sometimes attend craft fairs in other places to specifically sell Ni'ihau shell jewelry (ex: Made in Hawai'i Fest on O'ahu) so keep an eye out for them, even if you're not on Kaua'i! read more

They have a grand selection of Niihau shell jewelry, mainly necklaces and puma shells. Saw a cute mobile that I liked. Despite all the changes going on in Hanapepe town, there are a few diamonds in the rough that have maintained their old-school, local charm. JJ Ohana is one of those places that makes you feel like you're taking a step back in time, which is refreshing given all the new eatereis and boutiques popping up along Hanapepe Road. The quaint shop serves both as a gift store and convenience store, with plentiful street parking all along Hanapepe Road and the nearby side streets. I was here purely for the food and did not poke around the gifts area, but from what I saw there were a number of local products to explore. Now if you appreciate solid local grinds, then all you need to know is shoyu chicken on Sundays and Tuesdays. Go earlier in the day, as I'd imagine they run out seeing that they cook their shoyu chicken in a good old household-sized crock pot. You can either pick a mini size (one big scoop rice, two thighs) or a regular size (three scoops rice, mac salad, 4+ thighs). We got one of each, and although I don't remember the exact cost of each plate the total was to the tune of $10-$11. Crazy good deal, given that the regular size alone would run that price if you were on Oahu. The shoyu chicken, by the way, was delicious! The meat was so soft, fall off the bone type, and they were very generous with the gravy. It also had that homey feel, like your parents or aunty and uncle made it. Definitely one of the better lunches I've had on Kauai! They have other specials during the week, so check the white board in the back of the counter or ask if you happen to be there on a non-shoyu chicken day. Also, plan on taking your lunches to-go, as there is no seating in the store (if you need a suggestion, Salt Pond Beach is a great place for a picnic!). As I mentioned, JJ Ohana is also like a convenience store - so you can pick up other snacks and drinks (both bottled and dispenser cups) for your day. Its a good place to get bag ice, as I think the price is still $1.25 for a decently sized bag that should last the whole day in a cooler. JJ Ohana also gets a shout out as it is probably one of only two or three stores along Hanapepe Road that does NOT stay open for the weekly Friday art night. So plan on stopping by during the day if you're are interested in checking out what they have to offer! TL;DR - joint gift/convenience store, closed during Friday art night, and ono shoyu chicken special! read more

In the sleepy town of Hanapepe, JJ Ohana is a cute mom and pop shop that sells beautiful Niihau shell jewelry (earrings, bracelets, necklaces, all gorgeous colors, different designs), as well as, some of the best, comfort food around! Super love the $2.5 bowl of chili and rice. They also have a daily special (we tried the pot roast one day and the shoyu chicken the next) which is $3.50 and comes with a scoop of rice and homemade kim chee. It is a great place since they carry everything from beautiful Lei Pupu 'O Ni'ihau (Ni'ihau shell lei) to local Hawaiian CD's, to hot dogs and sodas! They also have a great selection of the faux flowers that we all wear in our hair here - many choices at good prices and good quality - not the junky kind you buy at ABC stores. Nice local place. Lady/owner was super friendly. Gave us the scoop on all the local snacks. Ended up with Waialua Root Beer and Kauai Kookie's cinnamon toast-which both delivered on flavor. My husband wanted to try the kimchee but we didn't want to spoil dinner. She also recommended a Sushi place for dinner (which was the same place we had previously yelp bookmarked). Everything in this town closes at 5pm except this joint. It shuts the shades around 5:30-6pm depending on what time the husband finishes washing the dishes. read more

I stopped in JJ Ohana while exploring the beautiful little town of Hanapepe. While here, I purchased a beautiful handcrafted Niihau Shell bracelet. The lady took time to write down the name of each tiny shell and also showed me each shell while naming them. They have a nice selection of Niihau Shell jewelry that are priced very fair.
