J.W. Hulme and I have a long and sorted relationship. I did business there for several years until they started outsourcing to China. Apparently they recognized that they were losing business by removing their manufacturing from the US. Now I'm back, because they have been offering items made in the US albeit, I don't know if they are being made in Minnesota. For myself, I am a bit of a purse snob. I have several vintage Coach and D&B purses from my mother's youth. However, I exclusively purchase French made Longchamps and American made J.W.Hulmes. I get loads of compliments on my Hulme bags. Most are reminiscent of New York City made Coach bags. They are heirloom items. I purchased my first Longchamp 17 years ago and they came with a "key leash." I prevents my keys from sinking to the bottom of my purse and stops me from panicking if I can't locate them immediately. Now J W Hulme's American made purses have a key leash. Hopefully, they are visible in the photo I've posted. Not only are they offering American made leather products, but they are offering clothing and accessories. They usually state in their catalog where the item is made. I started purchasing the majority of my Christmas and birthday gifts again at J.W. Hulme. I like that they're offering other things. It gives me more to chose from when it comes to presents. I am not going into their retail shop, as my first experience was less than pleasant. I'm very pleased to exclusively purchase from the catalog. I bought one small, "imported" purse for my stepdaughter. I didn't want to spend a fortune on the item, because I wasn't sure she'd appreciate purses yet. It was made in China. She loved the purse so much, that it fell apart within a couple of months. Stick with the America, British or even Mexican made products from this retailer and you'll be pleased. I pray that they are employing those fine leather artists here in Minnesota. read more

I bought a briefcase for my husband and was told it had a lifetime guarantee. A zipper failed soon after purchase and my husband tried to get it repaired. He was told that they are "not accepting items for repair" until next year. What the heck? And now they are saying they only guarantee products for two years. Really?? You can definitely get better quality bags for less. I bought from them because I was supporting a local business. Now they are moving their production overseas. read more

Just got my new Elliot bag. I'm happy with it as it was made in America but this will be my last purchase from this company. I found out that they outsourced manufacturing and out of stock products may be replenished by products made in China. Very disappointed with this change. I've bought bags from J.W.Hulme to support local businesses. I can't and will not but pricey bags from china. No wonder warranty changed from lifetime to 2 years. read more

I'm sad to find that they no longer guarentee their products for life. They've changed it to 2 years. I have to admit that their lifelong guarantee was a huge incentive to buy my leather goods from them. Now, I'm going to think twice before I buy. I've also come to learn that they will be outsourcing their production. Their website no longer has mention of products being made in America, and, although there are articles with the CEO saying that they hope to make as much of their product in America as possible, they aren't being particularly transparent. I know they are trying to grow their business, but I don't think they realize that they are going to lose a huge bulk of their customers with this move. All I can say is don't get anything monogrammed as you cannot return or exchange, and items purchased on final reduction sale are final. read more

What a huge disappointment this company has become! Don't fool yourself, the "made in America" sales pitch is false. If you don't believe me, Google the company and look at how the company has treated their former employees and the international outsourcing that now occurs. First, let me start with the positive. I was excited to visit the brick and mortar recently after speaking with an employee (thank you, Jenny!) on the telephone about a specific bag I was looking to purchase. She was incredibly helpful, kind and patiently answered all my questions. She agreed to hold the bag for me until I returned to Minnesota so I could visit the store on West 7th Street in St. Paul. I did purchase the bag but will take my business elsewhere in the future. The behavior of front line sales staff is arrogant, unprofessional and inept. This was experienced during my recent visit. A young lady asked me what I needed when I entered the store. I told her I was shopping for a new bag and she replied "well we don't have any inventory" in an unhelpful, 'don't bother me' tone. I explained that I had spoken to Jenny several weeks prior to my visit and she was holding a bag for me to look at. The young lady then called out for Jenny without acknowledging me or displaying any sense of respect for the customer. I don't expect to be fawned over when I shop here but I definitely do not expect indifference and outright hostility. The death blow occurred when I went to purchase the bag and the snarly clerk told me my card had been declined twice. Another example of lack of focus on customer service because when I got home I realized she had charged my credit card three times debiting my account $1500+. It prompted me to file a claim with my bank to refund the money to my bank account which I am still waiting for. I called and left a voicemail message for the Director of Sales on the day of my visit to offer feedback and suggestions for improvement. Sadly, I have not received a call back more than 72 hours later. I can only surmise this is a company wide issue. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I have now ordered three items from this company. The quality is fine. The service on my last order, however, left a lot to be desired. They sent me an item that did not have the monogram I had ordered. They promised to replace it, but the process for returning the wrong bag has been terrible. And, to throw salt into the wound, my phone calls with them have taken the tone of this being my fault somehow. Their accusatory tone has left me with no option but to find a place where I can spend $500 and be treated as a valued customer. If I wanted to throw down 500 bucks and be treated like I'm a jerk, I'll just hop in a cab in New York City. read more

A lot of those nice looking green canvas and leather Orvis bags were made by JW Hulme. In many ways, their products have a similar look and feel to those their fellow Minnesota company - Duluth Pack. My own opinion is that JW Hulme has more of a luxury feel, while Duluth Pack has more emphasis on the rugged outdoors. Both are worth a look, and with JW Hulme, ebay and other discount opportunities are a little more available. Gayle gave me one of their handsome folios for Christmas a few years ago and since that time I have collected a few more of their high quality items, including a small briefcase and a modest suitcase. Of course when we went in we gravitated to what mr. salesman told us was the "museum" section of vintage bags that aren't made anymore; canvas and leather with brass straps. We talked to him about how the rifle case would be good for yoga bags if modified, and he took notes. Did I say handmade? Domestically resourced materials, made in the back by craftsmen/women. Lifetime guarantee. Of course the vintage stuff is still made, but only sold at a department store in Japan. Hulme is my favorite leather goods company. These bags wear so nice, it's incredible. The quality is great, these bags will last you a lifetime. I am a huge fan of J.W Hulme Co. their quality and customer service are second to none. A huge selling point for me was that they were made in the USA. They also stood behind their product. Yes, the bags are pricey, but to me worth it for the quality, the history and again the fact that they're made in the USA. I have purchased a purse and 2 wallets in the past few years and couldn't be more pleased. I have recently learned that they are now outsourcing overseas. To say that I'm disappointed, is putting it mildly. I have looked at other designer bags made in China that are beautiful, but refused to buy them because I would always go back to the quality of J. W. Hulme Co. I agree with another reviewer who said they will probably lose a good deal of sales to people that valued the fact that J. W. Hulme was American made. Time will tell. read more

I have purchased several items from J.W. Hulme. Their items are fantastic quality, which I expected at the price range. However after seeing how exceptional their work is, these are items I can see my kids and their kids eventually using. First I purchased the document briefcase, which is the perfect size for a laptop and some documents when traveling. I often get asked about it because it is great looking and stands out. The more I use it, the better it looks. Next I bought the medium duffle, a combo of leather and canvas. Again, top notch quality materials and construction. Who gets comments on a duffle bag? I do...these items really are classic and eye catching in a subtle way. I plan on purchasing more from them...eyeing the wine totes, trying to decide between the single or double. I often take my own wine to restaurants and pay them a corkage fee (both so I can drink a good wine I know is good and pay a faction of what I would pay to the restaurant, assuming the restaurant even had anything I wanted.) Bought the iPhone 6 wallet from J. W. Hulme Co. On their website at jwhulmeco.com and have to say, don't buy there. The website is misleading. After purchasing for my wife, within days we found threads coming loose from the stitching near the fold. Upon looking closer, the stitching ended exactly at the fold! I'm sure this would be a fine case if the design was slightly different and the stitching stopped anywhere but where you fold it back and forth all day long. Anyway, wrote a review on their site because they emailed me and asked me too. It didn't have enough stars in the review I guess because they did not post it. Makes you wonder how many bad reviews they actually have on their products if they are deleting them! So not only was the product designed wrong, the company is dishonest. My kids probably think I am obsessed with J.W. Hulme. Over the past 5 years I bought 4 bags for myself, 2 bags for my daughters and one wallet. All JW Hulme products were absolutely exceptional and well worth the money! High quality, stylish, and practical. I would rather invest in JW Hulme products vs. well known designer bags that are plastic but I see them on every corner. I absolutely love my bag that I bought when I first moved to NYC in 2015. Every year or two I take it to be refinished and am always told that the leather is the best of quality- truly top shelf. However - I bought this bag when this company still produced their products in the US. I paid top dollar for my bag because I was told that the bag came with a lifetime warranty that I could pass down for generations. After drooling over the color glossy photos for years, I happened to be in St. Paul (i live in Florida) and decided to visit the retail address. Don't bother...It's a total disaster. There's absolutely no parking and the business's on either side clearly state that persons not visiting them will have their cars towed. After circling the block a few times, I pulled into a shipping dock and the sales associate who met me at the door was callus, abrupt and indifferent. I only spent a few minutes in the show room as it was filthy. As a high end manufacturer of expensive luggage, they should spend less on marketing and invest some money in a retail experience. read more

Horrible return policy; item was refused and I paid for shipping twice. Invoice indicated the item could be returned but then I was told over the phone, after I paid $60 in shipping total that it would not be returned because it was purchased on sale. Hideous! Also, the website does not include the bag dimensions and the bag was way bulky (I ordered the shell bag) with thick, ugly threading that was already coming undone. Avoid! read more

Company no longer stands for the quality American made items, they aren't any different than cheaper brands now. Don't support and buyer beware, buy better quality bags for less somewhere else! We purchased jw hulme briefcases as gifts for several years from brooks brothers and others. Simple reason was that they were made in america. And seemed like good quality. Now that production has been moved to China there is no reason. To purchase them anymore. Just another company that sold out for cheap labor. Ghurka tried that and it almost put them out of business. Thankfully they are making their business cases in norwalk ct again and the quality is wonderful. Mulholland Bros had a huge luggage factory in San Francisco,closed it,mover all manufacturing to China,and was out of business in a few years. People really do care where things are made. Jw hulme is just a name with a design team now-there is no heritage. Ghurka remains an iconic American brand and we will be purchasing our business case and luggage gifts from them. Amazing company that not only makes fantastic stuff - their customer service is even better. I have had my document briefcase for many years and it is still is in great shape. I had a buckle and one of the clasps that needed to be fixed. The great people at the J.W. Hulme store not only fixed both for free - they took care of some wear/tear spots and shined up the leather for free. My bag looks even better now and its great to get such great service from a cool company. read more

My only gripe is that I bought a bag before Xmas (on sale) and then two days prior to Xmas they mark it down way more. Yes, the bags are pricey but so very worth it! I can't imagine anyone complaining about quality. I was impressed when I received my Fairmount satchel and I am super hard to please. They have a 90 day return policy which is amazing. I unfortunately had to return the bag because it was too big for every day use. I payed for first class shipping and got a signed confirmation and $800 insurance and it cost me $26 shipping so I don't understand someone complaining about $60 shipping. Also, they ALWAYS have diminsions listed on their website. That's just a flat out lie. I highly doubt threads were unraveling...they have a lifetime warranty for goodness sakes!!! It just irritates me that people would leave a negative review about such an awesome company just because THEY don't know hot to read rules.
