Lucy loves to be at home and gets nervous when she's in an unfamiliar place, but I know when I drop Lucy off with these ladies, they treat her like a queen and want her to feel like she's at home Theresa and Kelly have exceeded my expectations and helped address some grooming concerns that I have dealt with for years. Lucy has always struggled with sensitive skin issues. They gave me recommendations for trying a different type of dog food, took the time to talk to me about ingredients I should avoid (while I was standing in the pet supply store!) and I've noticed a big improvement these past three months since switching dog foods. They even give her a sensitive-skin bath when she visits. I could go on and on about how professional, caring, and outstanding this place of business is. They stand out from the rest! I used to take my Morkie to Petsmart for grooming. Each time I took her there, she would be scared. They would mess her up made her look ugly. The first time was at the Petsmart in Illinois. So I figured maybe it was the location. So we moved back to Virginia Beach and I tried Petsmart again. I told them I wanted my Morkie trimmed. They messed her up here too. Made her look absolutely ugly and had the nerve to charge me an extra $7.00 because she was "too wiggly and it took two people to hold her down". What!? I knew that was her last visit. I then took her to dog training. I was told to take her to Ja-Pens and it was the best decision I ever made. Not only did she come out looking adorable, the staff was extremely friendly too! The place was clean, the dogs getting groomed seemed very relaxed. It was a nice atmosphere. My dog had a little accident there, but she just doesn't like to be crated which was my fault for not telling the staff. I recommend everyone to bring their dogs here to get groomed. Oh and by the way, they are way cheaper than Petsmart and do a MUCH better job too. Thank you! read more

I just love dropping off Furby here and he's been overdue for a haircut. The people here are just so sweet! They take good care of him and enjoys his pampering for his fresh Christmas cut. Ja-Pens is the best place of all the Hampton roads doggie salons. They continue to give Furby the best care and pampering. They love all their clients.. and these dogs get to have regular potty breaks while waiting to get groomed. The place can get pretty busy with the many dogs they get but, they treat them with the best care. They usually are really good with getting us in when Furby needs his grooming. They are the only salon that opens so early as 7:30! I get an appointment pretty easily even when Its last minute. They are really nice with holding onto Furby until i can pick him up and they never rush me. They gave Furby Christmas candy cane raw hide chews and a very nice friendly Christmas card and note! took my senior dogs there to be groomed. after few grooming. I was told not to come back because my dogs were bad. I had my dogs for 15 years and they got groomed all over the world. No one has ever told me they were bad. And funny it's the third time they went there not to come back. Teresa the woman who owns the shop is sweet but Kelly who grooms some of the dogs are rude and mean. one of my dogs became petrified of grooming after her handling of him. she calls her self a breeder and long time groomer but she's mean to the dogs. I took my dogs to another groomer and he pointed out to me that one of my dog is afraid of getting groomed because someone had physically hurt him . please if you love your dog don't take them to this place. The cleanliness of the shop is questionable. I would give them a negative number review if I could. read more

I wrote a review for another groomer in the area but I deleted it because after several visits they let me down. That is how I came to find JA-Pens! I looked online and read reviews. Like I said, my previous groomer was one of those uppity groomers that you pay a lot for a little. I wanted to find someone who would listen to how I wanted my dog groomed, did not charge a fortune, did not have hidden fees and treated my dog well. JA-Pens did all that and more. First, this is by far the most reasonably priced groomer in the area. Petsmart and Petco charge ala cart and other groomers seem to be upping their prices by $5 and $10 every time I go in. I have a Cockapoo and when I originally use to get him groomed it was $35. Some places charge me up to $55 which I find outrageous. JA-Pens said their prices increased which I was expecting the usual $5...they increased $1. I pay $41 for my 19 pound Cockapoo. Next, they are really attentive and gentle. The last groomer, who was supposedly known for cutting dogs for competitions, cut my dog all over his stomach and groin area. My dog is really good when he gets groomed. Groomers are always saying how good he is, there is no reason for this unless the groomer uses dull blades or is rushing. I told the groomer at JA-Pens my concerns and she listened attentively and said she would take care of my baby. Not a scratch on him. Additionally they do not take forever to groom. The last time I took my dog in was on a Saturday and because he was the only dog scheduled he was done in less than two hours. They also have great hours. I am very happy with this groomer. Don't let the exterior fool you. The staff is really friendly and they really seem to like animals. I am moving soon and I will be sad to leave them behind. read more

I me the owner of JA-Pens Grooming Salon when I was out walking my dog. She is a lovely person, has dogs herself, and obviously loves animals, so when choosing a groomer, the choice was obvious. I've had my Spoiled Retriever groomed here twice. First, I like the atmosphere of the salon. It's very open, warm and inviting. I felt like my dog would be happy and comfortable being left here for the day. That was important to me. Second, the people who work there are friendly and have a good rapport with the customers and their owners. The owner has been onsite on both occasions I've had my dog groomed. Also very important. Third, they've been accommodating of my schedule, and allowed me to bring my dog in a little later in the morning. Fourth, their rates are reasonable. Fifth and final, they did a good job. My dog was clean and smelled great. They cleaned inside her ears well, and did a great job on her nails. I wasn't entirely happy with the scissor work around her ears, which ended up looking choppy; but will hopefully work this out on future visits. read more

This groomer/owner is the worst! I will leave out details due to being busy but she shaved my newfy instead of trimming out knots. You never shave a double coat!!!! She knows nothing. She ruined his fur forever. She responded to my concerns by arguing and blaming. Not what you want from a groomer. Worst person ever. Do not go here. He looks like a stray dog with mange. Love, love, love this groomer!!! I was taking my dog to a commercial place down the street and he would be so terrified every time we arrived. I read yelp reviews and decided to give JA-Pens a try. So happy I did! I know this is stupid, but at first I wasn't sure about the name of the place....it sounds like a Chinese restaurant! Once I arrived I was relieved to see it's a cute little place. The groomers are great about asking you exactly what you want and my little pup has never looked better! I picked him up today and he had a Christmas bow on his collar, a rawhide candy cane treat and a thank you Christmas card that included $5 off his next grooming!! Our dogs get so many compliments when they come home. Ja pens always listens to what you want and always delivers. Easy to schedule, usually next day is available. Let me begin by saying that I found Ja-Pens by searching through online reviews when my pup's former groomer was unable to fit her in after three weeks of repeatedly calling. Ja-Pens fit us in for a same day appointment - on a Saturday no less - even though I was unable to make it out there at their usual Saturday drop-off time. The woman (I believe her name was Laura) I spoke to on the phone, however, was brusque and made it clear that she felt she was doing me a favor. When I walked into the store, I was unimpressed. It looked disorderly and smelled of dog urine, but the woman I had spoken to earlier that morning had seemed to change her tune and was much more welcoming to my pup. Laura(?) asked how I wanted her hair cut - something she also asked me over the phone - and I told her again that I didn't want my dog completely shaved (she's a long-haired terrier mix) but I wanted it cleaned up all-over. I told Laura that she was the expert, and I didn't have any preferences beyond that. My pup has very dry skin and was overdue for a hair cut, so I just wanted her to be comfortable. I didn't give explicit instructions, but that hasn't been necessary with past groomers. Laura explained the grooming process (after I asked), and said that my pup would only be crated for short periods between bathing/hair cutting/etc. because that is less stressful for the dog. I was told she would be done around 1 or 2 o'clock (this was at 10) and she would call me to pick her up. I was apprehensive (I'm a new dog mom and very protective), but my pup is very easygoing and seemed happy to go back with the groomer. Around 12:45, I received a call that she was finished. When I got there, she was running around with another dog and having a great time. I was relieved that she was not waiting for me in a kennel, as she dislikes being crated and is made nervous by other dogs' barking (she is a rescue). Laura assured me that my pup had done very well, but she was a bit too excited at the time to really check out her hair cut. Now that I have had time to look it over, it is clear that it was a rushed job. Everything that I asked for was done (ear cleaning/nail trimming/etc.), but it seems that Ja-Pens did the bare minimum. My pup's hair cut is extremely choppy and uneven, her nails are a tad too long, and an area of matted hair at the tip of one ear was completely ignored. Most importantly, she is still uncomfortable. She has been itching (especially around her private area) and shedding like crazy for the last two days, and she has terrible dandruff. I am concerned that I am going to have to bathe her again so soon after a grooming to wash off whatever Ja-Pens used, which has an overwhelming odor of baby powder. If the itching clears up on its own, I will update my review. Bottom line: Ja-Pens fit us in the same day, cost the same as other groomers, my pup seemed to have a great time and she came home exhausted. But the customer service is lacking, my pup's grooming was subpar, and it may cost additional money to make her comfortable. read more

Finally found a groomer for my puppy that will cut her hair the way I wanted it to be cut :) The place is busy (lots of dogs - all sizes) and my puppy is so tiny that she's not use to anyone but my husband and I, but although she was shaking and scared as soon as the owner of the Salon took her into her arms she was giving lots of kisses which I took as a sign that she was comfortable enough for me to leave her there. When I picked her up she looked perfect! I will only bring her here from now on even if I have to drive 30 minutes to get here. read more

During her first visit, they got to know her coat and demeanor very well, so well they know how to groom her without explanation. We are Navy, and leaving Norfolk for our next destination. This was my first time taking my Golden Retriever Jake here. The service was wonderful and my dog looks great. I had the wash, nail trim, feather trim, glands, and sanitary trim. It was only $40 (half of what I usually pay) and is the best grooming job he has had so far. The clip was exactly what I asked for and was correct to the breed standard.
