As we were wandering northward someone started suggested G&B. My reaction was absolutely not, why don't we go to Persimmon instead? "Oh, I've heard good things - where is it?" There. "Where?" Right there. "I don't see it." That door directly across the street from us! Persimmon is quite inconspicuous from the street, but is one of Fort Collins' hidden in plain sight gems. That proved to be a good thing on a day where thousands of people pretty much had the same thought of needing something to warm up - while there were throngs at other places we passed by Persimmon was nearly empty. Our group of 6 easily found a comfy spot for our group. It turns out the we beat the lunch rush - it started to get quite busy once noon rolled around. After perusing the menu for warm drinks a few decided they were hungry so food was ordered as well. I had a matcha latte, unsweetened, and it was a perfect choice to warm up after being out in the wind and bluster that morning. They use a ceremonial grade matcha, which I found to be smooth and really not bitter. I also shared a pastrami sandwich with one of my friends - they were nice enough to bring out the sandwich halves on two plates. While not a New York deli kind of sandwich, it was good - quality ingredients on focaccia. They source their pastrami from a specialty butcher in Denver, though I've forgotten their name. Sandwiches are served with kettle chips that are light, crispy, and not too oily. In a previous visit I had their tuna sandwich and sampled some appetizers. The tuna sandwich was among the best I have ever had - I can't really put my finger on why but I do remember that my first bite wowed me. I didn't see the meze sampler on the menu this time, but as I recall the beet hummus was a standout. I don't lunch out in Old Town very often, but Persimmon is always such a pleasure. Of all of the farmers' markets in town, this is my favorite for a number of reasons. While yes, it…read moreis held in a parking lot, the manicured grounds of the Larimer County Courthouse make for a pleasant millieu. As such, I am apt to spend a few minutes after I've finished my shopping sitting on the lawn (or rather a bench with all the wet weather we have been having lately), sipping my coffee and enjoying a little people/puppy watching to start off my Saturday rather than just rushing on to my next errand. This market is held on Saturdays from about mid-May through sometime in October and generally has a nice selection of vendors. My go-to spots include Native Hill Farms (I just joined their market CSA -- such a great program), Noosa Yogurt (normally $2+ for an 8 oz. tub in the grocery stores, but get 3/$5 at the farmers' market), Hazel Dell mushrooms, and of course the various fruit vendors come summer and fall. Discoveries for me early this year include Mama's Tofu (yes, tofu made in the Fort!), Lovif Patisserie (mmmm macarons and other sweet indulgences) and the Coffee Registry (get a cup brewed just for you). There is an educational component to this market, too, as it is run by master gardeners from the Larimer County extension ... stop by their booth to pick up information on canning or composting or what have you. I have been meaning to take canning classes from them for years ... maybe this year will be the one.

With skin like vanilla pudding, Brian took the time to tell me the difference between all the yummy brittles they make and even gave me a sample! The thin ribbon candy is made right in front of your eyes. The ribbon candy is SO BEAUTIFUL and delicate, but that's probably because it's made by the soft and supple hands of Brian. I heard about the Colorado Candy Company at Loveland's Winter Wonderlights where they made cotton candy. I thought the watermelon cotton candy was delicious and it was as soft as I imagine Brian's ponytail would be. I would highly recommend any product made by the Colorado Candy Company, and it makes for the perfect gift!
