Jack's is three different bars depending on what time of the day you go in. They open at 7am so first thing in the morning it is a night crew bar since that is their 5pm. So you will see nurses, security guards, and construction workers. Around noon it turns into a biker bar. They have special motorcycle parking with Biker Vision (a camera that points to the parking area so you can keep an eye on your baby). After 10pm it turns into a college bar. The place is typically filled to the gills and top 40 is playing. You might get groped, puked on, or sandwiched. It is a dive bar in all senses. Cheap drinks, crappy floors, and bartenders that have zero time for your BS. All in all it is a fun place if you just want to have a cheap drink and a good time. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of their bathroom situation. Occasionally they will get a large group before the back room opens up (the backroom has bigger bathrooms with more stalls) and there will be a line for the single stall woman's room. read more

Great dive bar, cool atmosphere with Batman grog (amazing), etc... but we went for a quick drink and now 2+ hours we still wreak of cigarettes. This is coming from someone who loves dive bars and all they come with (including the smoke) but this is a new level of stink. I visited Jack's on a particularly busy night. It was shoulder to shoulder everywhere on the Southside that night, which definitely made a difference in the experience. I'll try to keep this in mind when I review Jack's. Jack's has an interesting look. Its a nice little bar with hand written signs on the walls- not cluttered but getting crowded. It's gimmicky but not tacky, which is a hard balance to find. Their drink prices are untouchable, they are seriously sooooooo cheap. Pitchers of shots are like $12. It's ridiculous. We stayed here for about an hour before moving on. I think the smoke and the fact that the pool tables were covered up were the only complaints I noted. All things considered, Jack's is a great place to start the night. On a less crowded night, I can see myself enjoying it a lot more. read more

This is a classic Pittsburgh bar. I have been coming here since I was 21. It has a dive feel with a Juke Box. The bar tenders are friendly and the drinks used to be cheap. I was there a few days ago after not having been in quite some time. The drinks are no longer cheap. The ambiance continues to be that of a great dive bar. For a different twist, get there at 7AM and hang out with the night shift crowd. I used to come here a lot, but while other bars stopped smoking, Jacks continues to allow it. Ventilation is poor. After 15 minutes, you and your clothes will stink. Consider yourself warned! If you can tolerate this, then you will be happy with this bar. read more

This place made me love Pittsburgh. CHEAP food and beer. Nothing fancy, just a fryer behind the bar. Normal bar fare, but fresh and tasty. This place is exactly as advertised- a smokey, dive bar. It is cash only although they do have an ATM. It was primarily guys with very few women. The food and drinks were very reasonably priced. The service was friendly. The back room with the pool tables was open, but just stayed at the bar in the front room area. Our tolerance for smoke is a little low so we just had one and left, but other than the smoke, this would be our kind of place. read more

Now, let me start by saying I am not a fan of going to South Side (mainly because I feel really old when I'm down there!), but I really enjoy Jack's. We met friends down here last night (my second visit to this bar) and our service was wonderful. We parked ourselves in the back room and the bartender carded us (yay!), but remembered us from our last visit months ago. I'm sorry, but I cannot remember his name, but he's great! We ordered a couple of beers, and sat at a round table near the window. The prices here are really low, which is shocking, in a pleasantly surprised kinda way. The atmosphere is fun. The drinks are crazy cheap, that's the only thing this place has going for it though. Parking sucks, and if you're not careful cops don't hesitate to tow in the south side. This bar is a pretty cool place in SS. I like it because it's not the go to bar for frat or college kids which is a plus. On the weekends it does get crowded. The best bartender ever used to work there his name was JT he would make suicide shots he was awesome he knew all kinds of different drink recipes. The decor in the place is cool. Neon lit bar, inside and out. Split into two sections. One bar in the back where pool tables and jukebox are available; this is the most popular side. Other bar is brighter lit, has a cigarette machine and drinks come with a side of popcorn by default. Icons on the walls mimic demented graffiti style cartoons, often doin something sacrilegious. The main colors you'll find here are pink, green, black and yellow with hints of a navy blue. Beer choices are low and so is the liquor - but you don't come to a bar like this for that kind of quality. You come here for the mood. The crowd in the back bar was very rowdy and blasted top 40 tunes interludes with grunge rock hits. This side is very dark which is great for a single seeking seclusion. Crowd seemed composed of mostly locals and perhaps a couple of adventurous college kids. Bartenders were brief in interaction but very nice, tip them well. I sat alone at one end of the bar and worked on a sketch which seemed to bother no one as it should. Switched to other bar and sat by the cigarette machine. This side is definitely milder, bartender seemed almost jealous of his counterparts on the other side. Continued sketching and drinking a cheap beer with no one to bother me. Watched groups of people come and go, all dressed down by the bouncer. The white noise of the crowd was pleasing and the space available fit just perfectly to this jewel of a dive. Smoking is allowed, you'll need one for a place like this. Caveat: I was there on a Tuesday night. read more

Eclectic place..cool decor..stopped in at 10 because I had to pee and the place was packed with some rough looking characters who I'm sure were harmless, but usually the only place I see people getting a double jack and coke at 10 is possibly on a beach. This is the perfect dive bar! They have $1 sloppy joes, great priced drinks & you have to try the pumpkin pie shots...UNBELIEVABLE!!! It is smoke filled with very unusual characters. This is an awesome dive bar. The cab driver who brought us down to East Carson Street recommended it as a "truly Pittsburgh experience". Apparently this is also the oldest bar still operating on East Carson Street. The crowd here is kinda funky in a good way and you can tell this place has been around forever when you walk in. The walls are adorned will all kinds of comical signs that were hand drawn on bright poster boards and are very colorful and flashy. Some of these signs are even used to advertise menu items though I'm not sure i would ever eat here. My favorite thing is that they sell beer cocktails here. What?! The best being the Jack's Twizzle made with Angry Orchard cider and red licorice vodka! Bartenders seemed friendly enough. This is a pretty unique dive bar and a pittsburgh original. I don't go there much now, but I did have the occassion recently to be there at around 830am on a Saturday. I couldn't believe how many people were there and the mix of the crowd. There were people there my age who had obviously had a long night that turned into an early morning. There were also "grinders" who just got done working at the mill or whatever and were there to have a cold meatloaf sandwich and a beer for breakfast. There was also a guy there who was trying to sell me a pair of his shoes. There can be a lot of meatheads there sometimes late at night, but if you are looking for a good dive bar open 365 days a year I suggest Jack's Rose Bar, especially before 9 AM. read more

Had a riotous night here last Saturday. Great bartender, cheap drinks (liquor bottles have prices written on them in sharpie- ha! I love it), good music, and a great group of people. My boyfriend and I made friends with two different parties of people. We had plans to go to a fancy cigar bar later that night, but ended up getting too lit up here having a good time. Awful service. Wouldn't accept my ID and told me to get out even thought I was there the night before getting drunk off my ass. Immediately after exiting, I showed a police officer my ID and he said it was 100% valid. The cop called him an idiot. If you're going to bartend at least know neighboring state ID cards. read more
