This place definitely leaves something to be desired. The staff here is extremely rude and did not give a reason for asking me to leave. This is something I don't really understand. On one hand its totally the right of the business however the way it was dealt with was extremely unprofessional. Also, the food took awhile to come out, and the drink that I received was not very good. A place like this has some potential but as a trained cook I can tell you I was disappointed. However, the drinks for what I would consider low shelf and just not that great. The environment is prohibition era, and then they have this weird disco ball on the ceiling, which is really confusing. No, we ordered the brie and Apple plate... Very cool setting. 1910s feel, though not a bar in that era. A sliver space that carries deep past a long bar with small circular booths at the side. Moody black and gray, cool lighting and retro fixtures. One bartender served the whole place. Fun drinks, but on the sweeter side. Any cocktail is possible, huge selection. Jack's is my favorite cocktail lounge in Birmingham, and it has a certain caché missing from the cocktail bars in Seattle. This isn't just because it's in Bellingham either. There's something about the servers that just keeps it real. Chai is my favorite bartender, and it's not because he's the best mixologist. It's because he listens. He listens to what I want, and it's not about him. It's about the customer and what I express. Chai mixes a drink to what he intellectually took in from what you said. It's not about what he feels comfortable or at ease with. It's what he can produce to make you happy. Hallelujah baby! What an absurd concept in 2022. Dark, sultry, more East Village than PCW, Jack's is the quintessential cocktail lair. If I lived in Bellingham, Jack's would have my wife's phone number on speed dial. read more

Recently opened in downtown Bham, Jack's has a cool speakeasy vibe that makes it the perfect spot for meeting up with a small group of friends. While its intentionally low-key entrance may make this spot harder to find, the mystique is a good introduction to the subdue lighting, dark colors, and mysterious cocktails to be found within. I've been to Jack's twice now - once as an after-party following a nearby Yelp event, and most recently I met up with a couple of friends for after-work cocktails and apps. Both times, I found Jack's to be comfortable, friendly, and the kind of place I could see myself sitting for hours. Which, of course, could get dangerous. On both trips I had beer (me and hard alcohol just aren't getting along these days), and I was relieved to find they had a small-but-great offering of beers on tap. For my first visit I enjoyed a local pilsner from Chucanut Brewing, and on my most recent visit I enjoyed an amber from Menace. The latter visit also included a foray into their happy hour app offerings. For $7 I got a pint and (first round) a German corn dog and (second round) a generous helping of bar snacks. The German corn dog was tasty and served in a really stylish manner (see my pic). The bar snacks were the perfect salty accompaniment to my second pint 'o brew. The service at Jack's is subdued but friendly - you order at the bar, as there's no table service. Luckily it's a pretty small place, so this isn't a problem. And speaking of small, seating here is more geared toward groups of 2-3 rather than large parties. It would be an excellent spot for a romantic date! read more

Never been in prior to last night, but while walking by with my friends we decided to drop in and I'm so glad we did. It is by a huge margin the best bar I've ever been to. I'm not just saying in Bellingham, just anywhere in my travels. Starting out with the negatives. If you're coming in with a huge group of friends, the booths hold 4-5 people, maybe with chairs pulled up you could do 6-7 but you'd need to be good friends. That's the only issue though and it's also a strength. The bar is VERY intimate in a wonderful way. The bartender was simmering some spices (it was during the holidays) or something so as you walk in your hit with this incredible smell. The decor is impeccable, textured walls, beautiful wood, amazing leather, great lighting which all kept it feeling intimate. This is the type of bar you go with some close friends and drink and talk for hours on end which brings up the BEST part of this bar. The drinks, they're incredible. The bartender knew his craft, drinks didn't taste like anything I've ever had before. Everyones drink got handed around the table because whatever was ordered was the best version of that drink that we'd ever tasted. I can't say enough good stuff about this bar. Just stopped in here one time and really wasn't very impressed...The house cocktail I chose used Gin (Gordon's ie...UNDER the bottom shelf), Campari, Elderflower Liqueur and Lemon Juice and tasted 100% like drinking concentrated lemon juice and nothing else...didn't finish my drink and was never asked if I was happy with it or why I didn't finish...(only 1 other customer in the bar at the time)... Stopped by for a drink before dinner next door at Black Sheep. Excellent service and cocktails at good prices. Lovely outdoor area that seats 4 groups, all nicely spaced apart. I ordered a spicy mezcal drink and the bartender whipped up a nice one. Could have used a bit more heat but overall balanced and not sweet which is key for me! Husband ordered old fashioned less sugar and he said it was perfect. Server/bartender was great. We told him we were on wait list next door and almost up. There was a line at the counter but he took our order as we were standing and met us at the our table shortly with drinks. Definitely recommending stopping by this place when you're walking around downtown b ham. read more

I dropped in for a friend's birthday celebration and must echo what some of the others have stated regarding the snobby atmosphere. As a first time patron, I made the mistake of asking if they carried Rainier/Olympia and was immediately treated differently by the staff. He gave me the most epically-teen eye roll and informed me that their offerings are a bit more developed. Then rapid-fire listed the available canned options. Before I could answer my preference he went back to speaking with his friend who had walked in. Returning to me after taking his order with a "waddya want". Noting that Jacks is presenting itself as a higher class establishment specializing in cocktails, I ordered an Old Fashioned. A perfect drink to judge any cocktail lounge for its simplicity and origins. With cocktail in hand, I took my seat with my group in a booth. The bar itself is appealing, but small. The latter is most certainly the hardest to endure. When the establishment reached 15-20 persons, it became incredibly hard to navigate and to hear. Not a problem for me personally, but should be noted. The decor is kitschy and leans heavily into the speakeasy realm. The walls and ceiling are adorned with tin tiles. Similar to some older buildings in Seattle. In truth, the interior appearance and the neon signage out front are the highlights of this establishment. Which brings me to the drink... The cocktail I received was overwhelmingly orange flavored and quite rough. The bourbon chosen by the bartender did not play well with the simple and limited ingredients present. In fact, I would have been far less disappointed with a glass of DeKuyper orange curaçao splashed with Black Velvet whiskey. As that would be of equal taste at a fraction of the cost. I suspect my initial ask for a watery canned beer signaled that my palette would be none the wiser to a well-liquor substitution. I sincerely hope that's the case. To be frank, I am no stranger to the jaded or outright dismissive bartender. I have been in bars all across the world and often find this behavior favors quality. Their arrogance excused by the masterfully crafted concoctions leaving the bar. However, I did not find this to be the case at Jacks. I sincerely hope that it was just an off night, and that this bar can offer substance as well as style. Only time will tell as the storefronts of downtown Bellingham continue to shift. read more

We had a nice dinner before arriving at Jack's and had heard from an industry local it was a good spot for a classic cocktails. Bartender thought I was drunk after serving me, then told me to drink water. I kept quiet and obliged. Asked for a drink about an hour after my first and was denied. Nice work, losing money hand over fist and profiling people. Considering I had drank less than a pint of beer before arriving there I'd say I wasn't close to inebriated. I would think that the staff would have some sort of "smart serve" or "serving it right" certification. This is just another hipster spot charging $15 a cocktail and expecting a 20% tip for snarky service. Do yourselves a favour people, vote with your feet and take your money to somewhere that people know how to treat people. Sad... read more

My husband and I stopped in here after dinner for a drink. Immediately I love the speakeasy feel about the place. They were a little busy, but we were able to find a spot at the bar. There was only one bartender, and he was busy, but didn't hesitate welcoming us talking about the various drinks on the menu. I watched the bartender, Chai, makes various drinks and he really puts a lot of care into crafting each one. The drinks we had (corpse reviver and old fashioned) not only tasted excellent, but they also smelled lovely. I also loved the music Chai chose. Funky and upbeat. Being from central Texas, we were VERY excited to finally order takeout from Jack's BBQ for my partner's birthday dinner!! Truthfully, we loved the taste of everything we ordered. The brisket was tender with good smoke flavor and plenty of bark. Both sausages were juicy and smoky: I was a big fan of the original flavor and my partner was a fan of the jalapeño cheddar. The wedge salad was killer, fresh and crisp, the bacon jam and blue cheese dressing/crumbles pushing it over the top. Sides of potato salad and beans were excellent, though I should've ordered the $9 pint sizes rather than the small $4.50 sides for two people. We both had COVID, so we thought we should extra order queso and two desserts, ha ha. In our opinion, the queso was a tad thick, though perhaps it got cold and solidified during delivery? Adding brisket was definitely a plus. Highly recommend. Okay, now for some feedback: the peach cobbler for two ($10) could have been more impressive. As is, it is tiny and thin (under 1" cooked individually in a shallow 6" tin), spongy, and heavy with too much cinnamon/spice. Peaches are amazing fruits and over-spicing only makes it so you can't taste them, in our opinions. Because we ordered delivery we also didn't get vanilla ice cream with it...Hmmm. Could this be remedied? I make peach cobbler all the time in the summer, and it's really not that hard to make a big deep tray of it (like the mind-bending one Orlando's BBQ does in Oak Harbor) and scoop out a decent-sized serving two could happily share. They were out of the banana pudding, so we substituted the chocolate buttermilk pie ($5) which was very good and came with (again) a delicious crust but miserly-sized half-dollop of whipped cream. Additional feedback: someone needs to double-check orders and quality control. We only received one very small container of BBQ sauce (we ordered two) and the white bread was somewhat old (dry) and not (what??) thick Texas-style toast (Franz bakery makes it, folks). Added pickles, onions, and jalapeños should be each packed in their own container and at least 50% more or a bigger option available. Add 50 cents, whatever. There just wasn't enough to go around, and we ordered two "All Fixings" sides to go with our 1 pound of brisket thinking that'd be enough, but it wasn't. All in all, this was true Texas-style BBQ, and we were impressed with the meats and the cooking tenderness, the smoky flavors, etc.. We just would LOVE to feel that we were getting what we paid for. This meal (for two, with leftovers) cost us $140 with tax, tip, and delivery. That's fine, but when you spend that much on a special takeout night my belief is that everything should be perfect (and it really wouldn't be hard to get there). That said, we are REALLY glad this place is here in Bellingham and hope the owner(s) take this feedback and improve on some of the smaller things. read more

I visited Jack's for this first time on Saturday night. I'll definitely be back! The drinks were impeccable. The bartender was friendly and knowledgable, he asked us what we usually like in a cocktail and made recommendations for both of us. He was spot on, we both really enjoyed our drinks. We also ordered the prime rib sliders, which were very good, though I could have gone without the fried onions on top. The music and mood in this bar made it really stand out to me. The dark wood, low lighting, and black and white photos on the walls make for a classy, timeless atmosphere. The music fit the setting, and it wasn't too loud for us to have a conversation. Found this cute little speakeasy in downtown Bellingham. Great drinks & ambience. I really appreciate how the owner tried to keep the look of the place similar to how it was back in the day...you can tell by the old photos on the wall. You'll see antiques throughout this little bar, from the old school register that is actually used for cash, the rotary pay phone, and even the trash can in the bathroom. We really enjoyed this place. The only suggestion I would have is either having a bathroom attendant to keep with the theme...although there is no room for that...so instead having toilet seat covers since there is 1 bathroom for all! read more

Walked in with a wedding party and was immediately discriminated against. Multiple times a girl walked up to us and told us we wouldn't be served because we were at a wedding. Ultimately we asked if this was due to Washington law or her initiative and she kicked us out of the bar. Mind you this was on a Thursday night at a 14 person wedding. read more

Oh, for the ability to give 4 and a half stars! I have the recurring delight of convening with a friend of many decades each week for a late afternoon swill and grub session. We're always looking for that new, unique Bellingham vibe kind of place, both in the upscale and slightly more "down to earth" establishments. I read about Jack's here on yelp and it sounded too good to be true. Our first experience there made clear it was quite true, this place is a find. Others referred to it having a speakeasy prohibition era feel, and that's spot on. Dark inside, darkly stained woods everywhere, a long bar with an old, basic, NCR cash register as the display piece (the real register tilts out from a back bar door, they can still charge you modern prices), and dark leathery booths that feel like you could be meeting the don momentarily. Because we're both avid ale drinkers, we can't vouch for the elegance of the mixed drinks recommended both here and on the in house blackboards. The brew choices were small (this isn't a tap house) but nicely diverse and well chosen. We asked the bartender for his recommendation on foods, and he pointed us toward a veggie pesto pizza and prime rib sliders (an item not on the menu board). I like to go with staff recommendations because they tell you what the folks working to please you are willing to stand behind, and his choices did not disappoint. This isn't Bellingham's best pizza, but that isn't the point. It is very good bar food that made the drafts that much more enjoyable, and the sliders were just the right amount of not too dry, sweet and tangy. This place is small, and as a guy with decades in phases of restaurant management, and technology, that's a worry. Not enough space to put bodies means you either have to be priced higher than market to pay the bills, or have a great deal on rent. I hope these folks have the latter, because it will be great to have them around so we can return with friends for a long time to come. read more

Jack's is finally my replacement for Daphne's in Fairhaven, which closed. It's a great classic bar where the lights are dim, the music is mellow, the bartender is cordial, and the drinks are made with pride, precision & fresh citrus. No umbrella drinks, no foo-foo, not trendy & certainly not cute. Just a wonderful classic bar, as the red neon "BAR" above the door indicates. Classic like smooth jazz, that's Jack's. read more

First impression: small, dark and brand new. We ordered drinks and I grumbled to myself that their mixed drinks seemed a bit overpriced. THEN I watched the bartender create them and I was memorized by the talent and care he put into each drink. They use a large single cube of ice in some of their specialty drinks. This place has the feel of a speakeasy in it's small and dark nature. Our amazing new friend, KC Lange from X. Tattoo, highly recommended Jacks for our last minute New Years Eve Dinner and he was NOT exaggerating! If you don't know exactly where you are going you might walk right by Jacks as it is kinda small and set back from Holly St but, once you walk into the bar you are enveloped in warm, low lighting, great classic 60's music and a very friendly greeting! We were super pleased with the ambiance and seated ourselves in a cozy booth. At first, I was a little surprised at the small amount of menu items until I saw the selection! My husband and I shared the Prime Rib Sliders and the Macaroni and Cheese. I can't even describe how delicious this (obviously homemade) Mac and cheese was...and the sliders were so tender and buttery! They were served with a side of horseradish cream and dill pickle chips. The staff was very kind, the place was decorated so classy and the food was 5 Star! You have to visit this place! We will be back soon! read more
