Jack's is the real item; a cool throwback diner that's been around for generations with great food, lots of regular customers, and a friendly staff. I was greeted immediately by waitress who was busy making a milkshake as I grabbed a seat at the counter. I went with the "Italian Connection" omelet, which couldn't have been better. Total diner experience just wasn't too impressed. The rice was dry. The shredded chez was poured right out of a bag. There was almost more fat and grizzle on my steak than good meat. If I find myself in Albany again I might have to find another place to eat. read more

Very busy on the weekends. I've been to Jack's a couple of times and I usually am pretty satisfied. I stick with the basic eggs, bacon, and hash browns. Staff are always friendly and the diner has a nice atmosphere. Also very cheap for breakfast. On that note, there are better places to get breakfast in Albany. Even though I am usually satisfied there are times where I wasn't as satisfied with the bacon or hash browns. read more

This diner was a new place for us to try as we were heading to our hotel after an overnight drive from Virginia. Bathrooms were super clean which I appreciate. Limited parking in the lot but we found a spot on a Saturday morning around 8:30. I had the egg white spinach omelette with home fries and my husband had the Western omelette with cheese and ordered us a side of crispy bacon. Waitress staff was very accommodating and overall experience was great! We will come back because this owner has kept everything clean and the food was wonderful. I am a huge fan of this place and Jacks has become my favorite diner in Albany. For years and years I drove by this place and never thought to go inside, because for a long time it looked pretty run down (and kinda scary). I decided to finally enter about a year ago when the diner was owned by the previous (I believe original) owners. I remember getting bacon and eggs and man was it a greasy breakfast. But it was the typical delicious, greasy spoon diner food. What else could you ask for? I love that stuff. The interior at the time was pretty old school and kinda dirty. But I didn't care because I love the history of the place. So I kept showing up every once in a while for food, breakfast mostly...Imagine my dismay when I found the place sold and shuttered a few months later...Jacks was already becoming my favorite greasy spoon in this town. I was excited to see Jacks reopen back in September of 2010 with renovations and new ownership. I try to make it whenever I can now. The inside looks beautiful cleaned up and the place just shines. The grill/griddle which was once right behind the counter has now been moved to the back out of view, which I was a little disappointed to see. The food is great. Each and every time I have come I have not been disappointed with my meal. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, so far I haven't gone wrong. As far as diners go I would say the food is about typical to what you find in other diners in the area, nothing mind blowing, but honest to goodness food that fills you up. Prices are all right. Honestly, the only negative thing that came with the new ownership that I can think of is the color that they painted the outside stripes. Yellow and lime green? It think it sticks out like a sore thumb now, where in the past you could drive by and not even notice it. BUT if that is the price I have to pay to keep this 1940's beauty around, I will gladly look at those bright colors for years to come. read more

Jack's is by far my favorite diner in the Capital Region. It's a small family run diner car with some of the best breakfast and lunch options in the area. Like Ron Swanson, I live for delicious breakfast foods and I have to say Jack's homemade corned beef hash and eggs are some of the absolute best around, and can kill the worst of hangovers. Just delicious. I also really like that they have real breakfast potatoes, not those tiny potato nuggets that live somewhere in a freezer that get dumped in a fryer. This is real deal, sitting on a griddle breakfast potatoes. I especially love when they get a little potatoey crust from sitting on said griddle. I've also tasted some of the other offerings, and can say I've never been disappointed. They have a top shelf egg sandwich, excellent reuben, good soup (a cup is a bowl's worth), good french toast (although no real maple syrup offerings, boo) and good hot sandwiches. Most of the lunch options are served with fries straight out of the fryer. Since we're becoming regulars, I can say that every waitress is friendly and highly efficient. Try it with sausage (cased links sliced lengthwise). Prices are reasonable: Sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich (two eggs and 2 or three links of sausage) and bottomless cup of coffee ran just over 7 bucks. Menu is straightforward, and the service is good. It is an old school diner building, trailer style and the interior is clean and space is well used. Booths are comfortable, but might be snug for larger patrons. It is not as big as other diners, and fill up quickly on weekends, but waits are not long due to efficient service and kitchen staff. read more

In my line of work, I often have to be up very very early in the morning in order to make sure that I'm ready to work when I get to work. So, I'll go for a run with the dog, pack my bag, and make sure I'm wearing clothes. Sometimes I manage to be ahead of schedule, so I reward myself with a trip to Jack's. This place is a real diner. The dimensions are correct (about the size of two train dining cars, side-by-side), the chrome is plentiful and polished, the kitchen is clean (and the grill is hot), and the waitress is ready to take your order, but not ready to take any flak from you (dear). Actually, the waitress and the cook are both really nice folks, but they still aren't going to put up with any BS -- be nice, ask questions, make your choice, and drink your coffee. They've got the standard vertical glass refrigerator case with the shelves that rotate in order to display the pies and cakes, they've got a choice between booth and counter seating, there are newspapers available, and if you're interested in talking, there's always a conversation about the news, about someone's landscaping or automotive project, about something going on outside, yada yada yada. The customers of Jack's are genteel but not nosey. I often read the news, but I feel like anytime I'd like to strike up a conversation, there will be at least one person (other than the waitress) who'd be interested in talking. The food is exactly what you'd expect: big piles of pancakes, sausage, potatoes, eggs, etc. I can't say I've been here for lunch, but the menu does look good. read more

Driving down Central on a recent morning, we decided it was finally time to try Jack's. We weren't sure what to expect. As we walked in we were immediately struck by it's vintage charm. Opening the menus we were also pleasantly surprised with the options and the prices. Our waitress was SUPER attentive and friendly. I thought I had missed the cut off tome for the breakfast specials, but she left me have one anyway. M had never tried Eggs Benedict and decided to be adventurous, the waitress offered to put his hollandaise sauce on the side incase he didn't like it. M was happy with his eggs, and I loved my challah French toast sprinkled with cinnamon. We will definitely look forward to frequenting Jack's more often to try the rest of the menu. I love this diner so much and visit it regularly. Best diner in the capital region, without a doubt. I've probably come here hundreds of times at this point and never had a bad meal here once, my food has never been over or undercooked. Their fries are delicious and their soup and coleslaw is some of the best I have, which they make fresh daily. They don't have the largest selection of wraps and sandwiches that I've seen, but honestly there's no need, all of the ones on the menu are great. The service is excellent too, this place somehow consistently gets the most kind and attentive waitresses around. I also love the classic small diner feel of this place, it's a single room with a long bar on one side and booths opposite the bar. Bottom line: Food slightly better than average, everything else not so good. This place looks bad from the outside, and is so dirty inside that my wife said she couldn't bear looking at the floor while she ate. It's not in the best of neighborhoods but not in the worst, either. I asked the waitress for ice waters, which she forgot to bring. The first order of business after seating people should be bringing them when they asked to drink. I can't forgive that. My omelette, and toast were pretty good. Home fries were okay. My wife didn't like her omelette as it was a bit "yolky," but I like yolky omelettes. I won't fault Jack's for its location, but I have to fault it for both the dirtiness of the inside and the waitress' failure to bring us our waters. I feel I am still being generous in giving this diner four stars, but I thought my food was fine. read more

I've been here a couple times now for breakfast and I'd highly recommend it to everyone. I've gotten the same thing everytime because it was just so good I wasn't to keep eating it. It's the 2 eggs with the house made corned beef, it comes with toast and homefries. First the amount of food on the plate is so much, you'll be struggling to finish everything. Their house made corned beef is some of the best I've ever had. I'm not sure why people have complained about the homefries, I find them to have very good flavor, my only complaint about them is I wish they were a bit crispier, but I'm guessing I could order them crispier, we'll see I'm gonna give that a try next time. read more
