When a friend and I were going to have breakfast in Albany, she told me that I had to try the Skinny Pancake. Didn't need to convince me! Admittedly I'm a bit delayed in writing this review so some of what I tried was seasonal dependent as I got a hot apple cider for a drink. To eat, I got a crepe and side of sausage! Just a few short minutes later, the food was ready to go. Everything was really delicious. The sausage provided a perfect savory balance for the sweet crepe that I got. You must get a seat first, then go to the counter and order your food, and then they will deliver it to your table. My matcha with oat milk was great. The brownie wrapped in a crepe, with vanilla ice cream and strawberries was disappointing. Although a large dish, the brownie was more like a dry piece of layer cake with an ultra-subtle essence of chocolate. Love that they're open when other restaurants are not during the weekends. This areas a bit of a ghost town during the weekends! Service struck me as unusual. They were *kind of* servicing your tables, but kind of not, because you had to go stand in line like a counter order and pickup situation. Shout out to the hotel staff at Town Crowne (1 mile away) for recommending this place. They did not steer me wrong. I went in at about 8:20 where I was greeted by the most pleasant person. The side salad was just right, and the crepe was as good if not better than some shops in France. I would have preferred Swiss cheese instead of cheddar in the crepe, something, I can always ask next time. This place looks so yummy, and I kicked myself for not trying the apples and brie crepe, which looks to die for. I rated the place 4 only because I was disappointed with the Poutine side. The fries and cheese curds were perfect, but I couldn't wrap my head around the gravy. Just didn't taste like a meat gravy. Could have been they accidentally put vegan gravy instead, but I don't know. Just not same as other gravy I am used to in Poutines. It did say local gravy, whatever that means. Tasty, locally sourced food, with a delightful staff. Went to Skinny Pancake after strolling down Pearl St. looking for somewhere to eat. What drew us in was the mission: SP being a restaurant dedicated to sourcing it's ingredients from local small farms in the area. Upon entering it was a comfortable and laidback atmosphere. The server let us switch to a seat of our choice, and it was an hour before close on a Tuesday, so no surprise that we were the only guests there. We ordered through the QR code but were impressed by the selection, especially the savory crepes. The smash burger caught my eye so I wanted to give it a try. I made no modifications and let it come as is. I was greeted by a large pallet of fries, with a side order of pesto mayo (yum!), and a quaint burger on poppy seed bun. I had my reservations about the burger before seeing it- that the bread might be too cakey throwing of the bun to meat ratio- but any qualms were quelled once in hand. Light soft bun, beautiful cheese melt, big ol pickles for crunch, and a savory onion jam. I even added some of the house made hot sauce for some kick. Delightful meal. After dinner my partner and I engaged with the staff, who were incredibly helpful, one of them talked with us for about 20 minutes even after they had begun the closing chores, and gave us insightful recommendations to enjoy all Albany has to offer. I want to love The Skinny Pancake so badly, but it's been so hit and miss for me I just can't get there. The good: I love their mission and their commitment to sourcing and serving all things locally grown/made. Their fries are some of my favorite in the area, especially the Dirty Poutine -- fries with locally-made kimchi, cheese curd, Korean bbq sauce, and hot crispy oil -- I never knew I needed those things on top of fries, but now I'm pretty obsessed with the flavor combination. Their veggie burger, albeit impossible to eat like a regular burger because it's way too mushy, tastes great (spend the extra dollar to add caramelized onions) and I enjoy the lightly dressed side salad that it comes with. Probably my most favorite thing on the menu is the maple milkshake, I love that it actually really tastes like maple syrup, with great hints of vanilla. The relaxed vibe in there is enjoyable, I like the art on the walls, and I like the addition of comfy seating to invite you to stay a while. The bad: I don't think their crepes are worth the money. The fillings are not that impressive, especially the sweet ones, and the crepes themselves just leave me feeling "meh." I don't like spending money on things I feel I can make better at home. Because they do source things locally, if you go there later in the day there's a good chance they'll be out of stock of a lot of things on the menu. I hate faulting them for this because I really do love this mission, but when I already only go there for select things on their menu, to get there sometimes and see none of it is available is quite disappointing. I am a card carrying meat eater, , but I do like to try vegetarian/vegan items from time to time. It was very good. I liked the pesto. The vegan cheese actually tasted like "real" cheese. The veggies were well done. The only thing I didn't care for was the Seitan. I was curious because I had never had it before. Yes, it does take the flavor of whatever you make it with, but I didn't care for the aftertaste, which was a bit sour. Also, it was "doughy". (Yes, I was aware of what it is made of. ) I'm not going to knock off a star, because it's what I ordered. Next time, I would probably just order the " veggie monster" because it is very similar. We each had the Saranac ginger beer, which was very good. We were going to have a milkshake for dessert, but we were stuffed. The price was very reasonable, plus they offer a military/veterans discount. The only possible negative thing I could say, is that because this restaurant is downtown, parking can be at a premium. we were here on a Sunday at noon time, our vehicle has a handicapped placard for my partner, so we were able to get a space very close to the restaurant. It might be a bit tricky otherwise.. We left Happy. We will be back again, and will continue to tell others about this place. Thank you. read more
